Katsina Governor Cries Out: Armed Bandits Have Taken Over Parts Of Our State

Governor Aminu Masari while speaking with the acting Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, told him that bandits have taken over some parts of the state he governs - Katsina.

The Governor who said his government has met with the eight front-line local government chairmen to keep them abreast and will do whatever possible to see to the final onslaught on the bandits and kidnappers in the state, said the IGP was coming in a period of anxiety and apprehension.

According to him, Katsina has supported and will continue to support the ongoing ‘Operation Puff Adder’ with funds, logistics and accommodation. He announced a donation of 12 vans to the police.

The state's deputy Governor Mannir Yakubu, who spoke on behalf of Governor Masari, said the bandits have taken parts of Katsina in meeting and also strike and destroy properties at will.

“These bandits strike at will, maim at will, destroy lives and property at will" he said. “In other parts of the state, we also have kidnappers who not only take people on the road but in the comfort of their homes,” he added, citing the “unfortunate incidence of the governor’s in-law who was taken in the comfort of her home.”

Labour To Buhari: Sign New Minimum Wage Bill

The Nigeria Labour Congress has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the new minimum wage bill. The NLC said since the National Assembly approved the new minimum wage of N30,000 and passed it to the President for his assent nothing had been heard about it.

The union’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, Benson Upah, who spoke to our correspondent on the issue, said workers would be grateful if Buhari signed the bill this month.

He said, “The President constituted a committee that worked on the figure that was submitted to him and he sent it to the National Assembly as an executive bill. Similarly, the National Assembly legislated on it and sent back to the President for his assent.

“We have no reason to doubt that the President will not sign it into law; his body language does not suggest that he will not sign it.

“We are hoping and waiting for him to do so. If you asked me when he should sign it, I would tell you that it should be immediately. We want him to sign it right away so that by May workers can earn the new salary. They have been waiting anxiously.”

The Trade Union Side wing of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council also called on Buhari to sign the bill.

In a statement on Wednesday by the Chairman of the union, Abdrafiu Adeniji, and the Secretary, Alade Lawal, the TUS commended the National Assembly for passing the bill.

The statement said, “The tripartite committee on the minimum wage and the National Assembly have done a good job by approving N30,000 as the national minimum wage and accordingly deserve commendation. It is now left for the President to sign the bill into law and bring the minimum wage saga to a positive conclusion.

“The current N18,000 monthly minimum wage has become inadequate and workers are finding it extremely difficult to cope. This underscores the need for the President to sign into law the N30,000.000 National Minimum Wage Bill so the bodies that will work out the consequential adjustments arising from the new wage can be put in place.”

FG Insists On Continuation Of Onnoghen's Trial

There were strong indications on Wednesday that the Federal Government has opted to continue with the trial of the outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

It was confirmed at the CCT that Onnoghen’s lawyers have filed their final address.

The Nation reports that the prosecution team is expected to submit its final address today.

Justice Onnoghen is said to have bungled his chances to meet with President Buhari to resolve the impasse amicably in the interest of the Executive and the Judiciary.

After Justice Onnoghen’s resignation, it was not immediately clear whether or not President Muhammadu Buhari would direct that his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal be stopped.

While some government officials wanted the trial concluded, some members of the Bench and the Bar insisted on the decision of the National Judicial Council (NJC) to retire Justice Onnoghen.

Although the President was said to be weighing options on the NJC’s report, which made recommendations on Justice Onnoghen’s future, a government official said his trial will be concluded.

The source said: “The government will not withdraw the case against Onnoghen in CCT in order not to set a bad precedent. We want the case to run its lifespan for posterity and to avoid reading of political meanings into it. When this case started, there was much uproar, that it was politically motivated by the presidency. We want the tribunal to decide the case on merit.

“The NJC’s report also did not say that the trial be halted. It only demanded the retirement of Onnoghen. This is why no directive has been given to the Code of Conduct Tribunal, which is prosecuting the case, to withdraw the charges against the CJN.”

The source, who stressed that there was no deal with Justice Onnoghen over his trial, claimed that the CJN bungled his chances to decide his fate in the interest of the Judiciary.

The source added: “There were moves to prevail on the President not to allow the CJN to be on trial in CCT. The first window came from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) which sent a delegation to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. The NBA team wanted soft-landing for Onnoghen. Some terms were agreed upon, including resignation or voluntary retirement by Onnoghen.

“The NBA team was mandated to prevail on him to quit honourably in view of some overwhelming allegations and investigative reports on him. The CJN, who was initially amenable to reconciliation, later backed out.

“The second mediation was about another proposed confidential session between President Buhari and Onnoghen, which was facilitated by some highly-placed Nigerians. They wanted the President to hear from Onnoghen to pave the way for his quiet retirement from office without subjecting him to trial. The CJN consented to the session with the President but he aborted it at the last minute without any justifiable cause.

“Onnoghen had over-relied on the outcome of NJC’s investigation – that it would be in his favour. He had no choice than to throw in the towel when the NJC advised Buhari to retire him. It was at this stage he chose to voluntarily leave office.”

After 30 Years Rule, Sudan’s President Omar Al-Bashir Steps Down

Reports have confirmed that Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir has stepped down after three decades of iron rule.

EGH News has reported that the Sudanese army are set to take over the country, who will lead a new transitional High Council of Armed forces.

This follows reports that the Sudanese army was Thursday planning to make “an important announcement”, state media said, after weeks of protests against al-Bashir’s rule.

“The Sudanese army will issue an important statement soon. Wait for it,” a television anchor said, without giving further details.

Reports had filtered in that there was a possible military coup in Sudan, and that al-Bashir was on the verge of stepping down.

Mumtaz News and Al Arabiya reported on Thursday morning that in addition to the above developments, Khartoum Airport had been closed, the military had taken over national TV and radio, and a number of top leaders had been arrested as army chiefs held a meeting.

Tribunal Suspends Kebbi-Based Doctor For Amputating Baby In Womb

A tribunal has suspended a Kebbi-based doctor from practice for six months after finding him guilty of negligence in misdiagnosing a pregnant patient.

In April 2017, Dr Jamilu Muhammad, working at Martha Bamaiyi General Hospital in Zuru, Kebbi, “erroneously diagnosed” that his patient Fatima Danjuma’s baby had died in the womb and needed to be evacuated, the tribunal of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria ruled.

The foetus was found to be alive while the surgery was already on and a prolapsed upper limb already amputated.

A petition for “unethical behaviour” was filed with the council in May 2017, and an investigative panel found the doctor had a case to answer before a tribunal, which has the status of a high court.

In judgement delivered at the MDCN council chambers in Abuja, the tribunal chairman Abba Hassan, ruled Muhammad conducted himself “infamously in a professional respect contrary” to the council’s code of medical ethics.

Muhammad was suspended pending the outcome of his trial. At trial, he pleaded guilty and asked for leniency.

But the tribunal noted he had been on suspension for a period longer than the six-month sentence and “deemed to have served and exhausted the prescribed term of suspension” imposed by his sentence.

He is one of 14 doctors facing trial at the tribunal for a range of offences.

Trial continues for nine doctors at Asaba Medical Centre to defend themselves against charges of gross misconduct and negligence in managing a pregnant patient. All nine have pleaded not guilty.

Lmao! Popular Nigerian Doctor Educates Men Who Are WOMB SHIFTERS

Popular Nigerian Medical doctor, Olufunmilayo has taking to twitter to educate supposed womb shifters. The trend now is.. 'i want to shift your womb'.. 'let me shift your womb'.. shior. Dr Olufunmilayo now says that by the way isn't possible.

Dr Olufunmilayo wrote:

During labour/delivery, When a woman’s cervix (the gate of the womb) is fully opened at 10cm, to allow a baby to come out, this is what it looks like. But men like to fool themselves and assume they can “shift your womb”. Yet 95% of peni.s width is under 5cm. Beautiful delusion.

But it takes 9months for the body to prepare for this” Exactly. Now think about it. If it takes 9months to prepare for a delivery of a whole baby, an act that doesn’t even “shift the womb”, is it your 3cm width joystick that will make a difference? Lmao. Pls get the fvck.

Doctor this is not fair, stop attacking our ego as men” Ok let’s be serious. No sensible man should have ego built on sex or peni.s prowess. That’s ephemeral and daft. Build your ego, if you have to, on more serious and exemplary qualities. Not on numbers of “shifted wombs”…

And actually NO peni.s can ever actually shift a womb. To start with, very very few peni.s will even touch the cervix (the entrance of the womb) during sex. NOT to talk of hit it enough to have any impact on the womb. Let’s get serious. Womb shifting is a myth. Let’s drop it.

This is simple anatomy. And a touch of common sense. Nothing more. NO Peni.s can shift a womb. Quote me anywhere. And even if by any remote possibility there would be, maybe it’s the context of an adult man raping a toddler. Or something worse. But in normal situations? Nah.

Anatomically, during sex, the peni.s is mainly in the vagina doing an in-out movement repeatedly till orgasm. And that’s it. Very few people and very few times can it touch the cervix, if it ever does. And it will never be significant enough to cause a womb to shift. You get it?

Deadly Gang War In Lagos: Two Killed, Many Injured

The police have confirmed that two persons were killed yesterday in a gang war in Fadeyi, Lagos, which locked down the area for hours. Scores were injured in the fight, which started around 11am.

Its cause was unknown. In a statement last night, police spokesman, DSP Bala Elkana said 33 persons were arrested in connection with the clash.

The Nation learnt that those killed were a dispatch rider, who was hit by a stray bullet, and an unidentified man. The bodies have been deposited at a mortuary.

Sources said the fight started before noon, with sporadic shootings, adding that people ran for their lives. Fadeyi is notorious for cult clashes.

They said the Fadeyi portion of Ikorodu Road was closed for hours as the fighting raged. An eyewitness said: “The crisis is not a small matter. Immediately the shootings started, the police ran away because those boys were heavily armed.

“They were not carrying pistols. I don’t know how to describe their guns. The arms and ammunition they carried were more sophisticated than those of the police. It was after the crisis subsided that the police returned to the scene.”

Police vans and armoured personnel carriers have been stationed in the area. Broken bottles, blood stains, stones, sticks and other weapons littered the scene.

The injured are receiving treatments. Residents said they were afraid of a reprisal because of the man killed. A resident, who preferred anonymity, said a similar incident occurred last year, adding that the hoodlums stole belongings, including six motorcycles.

Okorocha's Certificate Of Return: Judge Withdraws

Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court on Wednesday withdrew from a suit filed by the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, seeking an order compelling INEC to issue to him a certificate of return as the senator-elect for the Imo West Senatorial District.

INEC had refused to issue Okorocha the certificate of return on the basis that the Returning Officer for the February 23 election, Prof Francis Ibeawuchi, said he had announced the outgoing governor as winner of the senatorial election under duress.

Okorocha had subsequently filed his suit challenging INEC’s decision to withhold the certificate of return due to him as the winner of the election.

But Justice Taiwo, who had been presiding over the matter, announced his decision to withdraw from the case on Wednesday and ordered that the case file be returned to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Adamu Abdul-Kafarati, for re-assignment to another judge.

The judge said he took the decision following the allegations of bias levelled against him by Okorocha’s opponents in the February 23, 2019 election – Jones Onyeriri of the Peoples Democratic Party and Senator Osita Izunaso of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

Onyeriri sent a petition dated April 8, 2019, to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Abdul Kafarati, demanding that the case file should be retrieved from Justice Taiwo and re-assigned to another judge of the court.

In the affidavit deposed to on his behalf by a lawyer, Chijioke Nzekwe, Onyeriri stated that Justice Taiwo on April 5, 2019, had made a bias comment in favour of the plaintiff, Okorocha, when the judge allegedly told INEC’s lawyer, Wendy Kuku, that the commission was responsible for the problems arising from the election.

The affidavit added that Justice Taiwo had pre-judged the notices of preliminary objection filed by the 2nd and 3rd defendants (INEC and Onyeriri) when he allegedly said he had read through the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended) and found nothing therein that robbed him of the jurisdiction to hear his suit.

Izunaso also filed an application dated April 8, 2019 before the same judge dated April 8, 2019 asking Justice Taiwo to disqualify himself from further handling the matter and return it to the Chief Judge for re-assignment to another judge.

The application filed on his behalf by his lawyer, Orji Nwafor-Orizu, stated that “there is likelihood of bias on the part of this honourable court to continue to hear the suit as the honourable presiding judge has expressed an opinion favourable to the plaintiff even without the hearing of the substantive suit.”

The applicant stated that Justice Taiwo made the said utterances on April 5, 2019 allegedly showing that the judge had “clearly pre-judged the substantive issues that will be resolved in this matter and clearly showed that the honourable presiding judge has taken sides with the plaintiff.”

Justice Taiwo announced his withdrawal from the case shortly after the matter was called in court.

Woman In Trouble Over Death Of Her Lover

A chief Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has ordered the remand in prison custody of a 60-year-old widow, Priscilla Ikenga over the death of her alleged lover.

Ikenga allegedly pushed the victim, Eziwhuo Ejuh an alleged drunk, during an altercation and he fall to the ground on his forehead and died.

A police document alleged that the deceased visited the suspect while drunk on February 23, 2019 and in the bid to resist him from gaining access into her house mistakenly pushed him.

The incident the Police said happened in one of the communities in Emohua Local Government Area of the state. The two-count charge of murder preferred against him was not read to her; hence she did not take any plea.

She had no legal representation in the sitting.

The presiding Chief Magistrate, Sokari Andrew-Jaja said the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter and ordered that the original case file be duplicated and remitted to the office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice. Jaja ordered that the accused be remanded in prison.

He adjourned the matter till May 9, 2019 for Report of DPP’s advice.

Senate Slams Buhari; To Override Him On Two Bills

The Senate on Wednesday resolved to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto on his rejection of a constitutional amendment bill.

The bill seeks to make it mandatory for the President and governor of a state to lay the annual budget estimates before parliament, three months to the end of a financial year.

The red chamber at plenary, also said it would override the President’s veto on the Industrial Development (Income Tax Relief) Amendment Bill. It would reconsider and pass the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill, Stamp Duties (Amendment) Bill and nine other bills earlier rejected by Buhari.

The upper chamber equally resolved to withdraw four other bills rejected by the President and discontinue further legislative works on them.

The resolution followed the adoption of the report of the Technical Committee on Declined Assent to Bills by the President. The Chairman of the committee, David Umaru, told his colleagues that his panel scrutinised the 17 bills. He recommended that 11 of them should be reconsidered and passed by the National Assembly.

He also recommended that four others should be withdrawn even as he called on the National Assembly to override the President’s veto on two bills.

The two bills to be overridden are, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Fourth Alteration, No. 28) Bill, 2018 as well as the Industrial Development (Income Tax Relief) Amendment Bill.

The President had in 2018 declined assent to the Constitution (Fourth Alteration, No. 28) Bill on the grounds that Section 2 (b) and 3 (b) of the proposal ‘appear not to take full cognisance of the provisions of Section 58 (4) of the 1999 constitution.’

The panel submitted that the bill was not in conflict with the 1999 constitution, as claimed by Buhari.

Kim Kardashian Wants To Be A Lawyer So She Can Help More People

Before the Kardashian name became synonymous with reality television, it was associated with the late Robert Kardashian Sr., who was one of the most prominent lawyers in America. While the family has since become one of the biggest brands in the world, Kim Kardashian has opened up about her desires to return to the foundation laid by the family's patriarch.

On Wednesday, Vogue released its May cover story featuring Kim Kardashian in which she revealed that she's studying to become a lawyer with a four-year apprenticeship with a law firm in San Francisco, and plans on taking the bar exam by 2022. She also lays out her plans to further pursue criminal justice reform. Kardashian first made political headlines after her meeting with President Trump, which led to the release of Alice Marie Johnson from prison. Seeing this "really good result" made Kim want to take learning the intricacies of the law more seriously. "I never in a million years thought we would get to the point of getting laws passed. That was really a turning point for me, she said.

"The White House called me to advise to help change the system of clemency," she added. "I’m sitting in the Roosevelt Room with, like, a judge who had sentenced criminals and a lot of really powerful people and I just sat there, like, Oh, shit. I need to know more."

She went on to state that during her meeting with Trump, she was backed by several accomplished attorneys. However, she would like to be more informed so that she can have a greater impact.

"I had attorneys with me who could back that up with all the facts of the case. It’s never one person who gets things done; it’s always a collective of people, and I’ve always known my role," Kardashian said. "But I just felt like I wanted to be able to fight for people who have paid their dues to society. I just felt like the system could be so different, and I wanted to fight to fix it, and if I knew more, I could do more."

Kardashian also opened up about the outsize influence that her father had on her legal aspirations. "On the weekends they used our home as an office, with Johnnie Cochran and Bob Shapiro,” she said. “My dad had a library, and when you pushed on this wall there was this whole hidden closet room, with all of his O.J. evidence books. On weekends I would always snoop and look through. I was really nosy about the forensics.”

Teen Fined For 'Wasting Police Time' Before Stalker Slit Her Throat

Three police officers are facing disciplinary action after a woman who repeatedly reported her stalker ex-boyfriend was fined for wasting police time before he murdered her.

Shana Grice, 19, had asked for protection from stalker Michael Lane five times in six months before he slit her throat and tried to burn her body in August 2016.

In March that year she was fined £90 by Sussex Police for wasting their time after reporting Lane for pulling her hair and grabbing her phone - because she did not tell officers they had been in a relationship.

This was despite jealous and obsessed Lane being warned to stay away from her a month earlier, when Miss Grice first told police she was being stalked.

He had placed a tracker on Miss Grice's car so he could follow her and loitered outside her home, and it later emerged that 13 other women had reported him to police for stalking.

In July that year he used a stolen key to enter Miss Grice's bedroom in Portslade, near Brighton, in East Sussex as she slept, for which he was given a police caution.

A month later he murdered Miss Grice after learning she was in a new relationship, then set her bedroom on fire in an attempt to burn her body.

In March 2017, Lane, then 27, was jailed for life with a minimum term of 25 years for Miss Grice's murder.

At sentencing, Mr Justice Nicholas Green criticised Sussex Police for siding with the stalker by jumping to conclusions and stereotyping Miss Grice.

Sussex Police apologised to her family and referred themselves to the police watchdog, which investigated 14 officers.

An independent report found the force's approach to investigating stalking and harassment cases was not consistent or effective.

Sussex Police have now said two officers - one retired - will face gross misconduct proceedings in front of an independent chairman at public hearings in May after disciplinary action was recommended by the police watchdog.

Another police officer will face internal misconduct proceedings, which are carried out in private.

No further action will be taken over five other officers investigated by the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC), while six other force employees - three officers and three staff - have already been handed "management advice and further training".

The announcement was made during National Stalking Awareness Week.

Miss Grice's parents say the changes made by Sussex Police are "too little, too late".

Ched Evans Agrees Almost £1m Settlement From Lawyers Over Rape Allegation

Ched Evans has agreed an out-of-court settlement of almost £1million from lawyers who first defended him against his rape charge.

Evans, who is now with Fleetwood Town, was jailed for two-and-half years in 2012 after originally being convicted following a trial.

He was later found not guilty of rape in a retrial in 2016.

The Mail reports Evans sees the settlement as "closure" allowing him to fully focus on his football career once again.

Evans was represented by law firm Brabners when he was initially convicted and subsequently sacked by Sheffield United.

He was due to face Brabners in the High Court in London this month but a settlement has been reached.

A spokesperson for Evans told the Mail: "In late 2016 Ched began litigation against his original defence team of Matthew Bennett and Stuart Ripley of Brabners LLP for negligent defence.

"On Thursday 4 April Ched accepted an out of court settlement."
