Gunmen Kill About-To-Wed Man In Abia State

Gunmen have killed a young man at Ogbor, in Aba North Local Government Area of Abia State.

The incident, which The Nation learnt, occurred at Uwakwe Street, off Ukaegbu Road, Ogbor-Hill, has caused panic in the area.

Sources said the deceased, who reportedly visited his parents, was the only person killed by the gunmen, who, however, dispossessed others of their belongings.

The sources said they suspected the killing to be cult-related.

They said: “We don’t know the young man, but some people said he came to visit his parents at Medical Drive, near Ukaegbu Road.

“According to reports, he entered a bar and a few minutes later, armed men stormed the area and struck.

“We suspect that the gunmen trailed him to the bar. They only robbed other people in the vicinity.

“We learnt that he was planning to wed and came to inform his family, who live on Medical Drive.

“We ran into our houses when we heard what happened. We thought cultists were fighting again, but later found out that it was the deceased that was targeted.

“We are now afraid because of the killing.”

Police spokesman Geoffrey Ogbonna confirmed the incident in a phone interview with our reporter.

He said he was yet to be properly briefed on what happened.

The Nation gathered that the body had been deposited at the mortuary.

Government Warns Atiku Against Self-Help

The Federal Government yesterday warned Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar against resorting to self-help over the outcome of the February 23 election.

It asked Atiku to realise that the only lawful channel for challenging the result of an election is the court.

Any act capable of triggering a crisis will not be condoned, the government said.

The government said it was absurd that Atiku had hired a lobbying firm to convince the United States not to recognise the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari until the Supreme Court has ruled on the suit he filed. Atiku has denied this.

It said having lost by almost four million (4m) votes, it was  unfortunate that Atiku is seeking US recognition as the winner of the election.

To the government, it is unfortunate that Atiku is thinking of replicating the Venezuelan model in Nigeria.

The government made its position known at a briefing in Abuja by Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed, which was attended by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.

Mohammed said: “As you must have noticed in recent times, posters bearing the picture of former Vice President and the presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, with the inscription: ‘’THE PUKKA, H.E. ATIKU ABUBAKAR, THE REAL AND THE RIGHT’’, have surfaced across major streets in Abuja.

“The appearance of these posters coincide with the media report  that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has hired a US lobbying firm to convince the United States not to recognise the re-election of President Buhari until the Supreme Court has ruled on the suit by the PDP presidential candidate

“The posters and the hiring of U.S. lobbyists, the latest of such by the PDP candidate, have triggered questions about what Alhaji Abubakar is up to. Is he starting a fresh campaign after the elections have been won and lost?

”Has he rescinded his decision to challenge the results of the presidential election in court, perhaps after realising that the results he claimed to have obtained from the INEC back server are cooked? Is he now going for self-help? What really is Atiku’s motive?

“Gentlemen, we are aware of media reports that the PDP presidential candidate on Wednesday distanced himself from the posters that are circulating in Abuja. He also reportedly denied hiring U.S. lobbyists, claiming tongue-in-cheek that the APC fabricated the report.

“If the media reports are right, it means that the former Vice President has suddenly realised the grave implication of his actions, hence has decided to beat a quick retreat before it is too late.

“As a self-avowed democrat, he should realise that the only lawful channel for challenging the result of an election is through the courts. Resorting to self-help, as he seems to be doing now, is an act of desperation and the consequences are dire.”

The Federal Government described Atiku’s plot to replicate the Venezuelan model in Nigeria as sheer daydreaming.

This Photo Of The Media Reflected In Trump’s Eyes Is Wowing The Web

Associated Press photographer Pablo Martinez Monsiváis was just doing his job Wednesday when he took a picture of President Donald Trump at a press conference on the South Lawn of the White House.

It’s that picture, however, that has captured the attention of social media users this week with many describing it as beautiful.

Taken before Trump boarded Marine One, the photograph depicts Trump’s eyes in clear detail with an image of the media reflected back.

Monsiváis posted an edited version of the photo on his Twitter account.

The photograph has received lots of praise and somewhat mixed reactions on social media as expected anyway.

Some have pointed out the symbolic nature of the photograph, as it comes at a time when the president has repeatedly suggested that the media is the “enemy of the people.”

After the sexual abuse, the girl quickly notified her father about the incident, which prompted the man to report it at the Police station.

Abimbola, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) who made this known in a release, stated that “upon interrogation, the randy old man admitted having carnal knowledge of the victim but claimed not to know what led him to it.”

The Police Spokesman added that the victim has been taken to the General hospital for medical attention and report.

However, the Commissioner of Police Bashir Makama has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to Anti-Human trafficking and child labor unit of the state criminal investigation and intelligence Department for proper investigation and prosecution

APC Senator Offers Saraki Another Wife

Kabir Marafa, senator representing Zamfara central, has offered Senate President Bukola Saraki another wife. He made the offer while thanking his colleagues for approving a N10 billion intervention fund for Zamfara State following the spate of insecurity in the state.

Speaking on the floor of senate on Thursday, the popular Zamfara Senator said there is room for another wife in Saraki’s house because its size “is grossly underutilised.”

He said, “I have a mounting order from my constituents to thank you for the efforts we all collectively put in addressing the plight of the people of Zamfara state.

“Mr President, I want to thank you specifically. A lady in my constituency said I should tell you specifically that she has never seen you hit the gavel the way you did yesterday and I should tell you that when you commence your sabbatical, that she has offered herself to marry you, if you so wish.

“I told her to wait until we see facts and figures in the 2019 budget. With respect and apology to Madam at home but from where I come, you are allowed up to four wives. So madam should please keep space because anytime I sit at home and look at the size of the house, I feel it is grossly underutilised.”

EFCC Releases Barr. Ubani After Over 20 Days In Detention

A former Vice-President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Monday Ubani, has regained his freedom after being detained for more than 20 days by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The EFCC detained Ubani along with Senator Christopher Enai, with whom he stood as surety for a former Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, Mrs Ngozi Olejeme, whom the EFCC accused of N6.4billion fraud.

The EFCC on March 19 invited and detained Ubani and Enai because Olojeme allegedly absconded.

The two men, through Mike Ozekhome (SAN), challenged their detention by the EFCC before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Apo, Abuja.

In his judgment on March 26, Justice Silvanus Oriji ordered the EFCC to either charge both of them to court immediately or release them on bail on or before March 28.

However, many days after the judgment, the EFCC neither released them on bail nor charged them to court, prompting Ozekhome to commence contempt proceedings against EFCC boss Ibrahim Magu.

The refusal of the EFCC to comply with the court order drew criticisms from various quarters, including the NBA and a human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN).

A senior EFCC official confirmed Ubani’s release on Thursday, The Punch reports. Efforts to speak to Ubani about the terms of his release were unsuccessful as his mobile phone was switched off.

Already, the Commission has filed three charges against him for failing to produce Mrs. Olejeme.

Ambode Would Have Surpassed Tinubu, Fashola If...

A political analyst, Wale Ogunade, on Wednesday said the governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, would have surpassed the achievements of his predecessors if he had not ignored the political structure that brought him to power.

Mr Ogunade, who is the president, Voters Awareness Initiative, spoke with NAN in Lagos, while assessing Mr Ambode’s performance ahead of his exit from office next month.

Mr Ambode lost his bid to return to office for a second term during the All Progressives Congress, APC, primary election, losing to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who became the party’s candidate in the March 9 governorship election and would be succeeding him on May 29.

Unlike Mr Ambode, his immediate predecessors, Babatunde Fashola and Bola Tinubu spent eight years each in office, having been there for two terms each.

Ogunade said Ambode started well as he continued on the development progress of his predecessors.

“In fact, Gov. Ambode should have surpassed his predecessors, but unfortunately he got carried away by power. He saw power as a means of getting himself above the system and I believe the system overwhelmed him. He is a technocrat, and unfortunately he did not take into consideration the political structure that brought him in. And of course, as election time came, the same political structure did away with him.

“I hope that it is a lesson that no matter how good you are, you must not lose touch with the political structure or the people, because the Governor at some point cut off the people. That was why he only had the support of the few friends he worked with and not the people,” he said.

Mr Ogunade urged political leaders to learn from the mistakes of Ambode and carry the people along in their administration.

“So, my advice to politicians is that the people must be factored into your political life, because as a President or a governor, you have to live a multidimensional life. You are a family man, a party man, chief security officer, head of civil service and the father of all, and you must carry everybody along because everyone matters,” he said.

Mr Ogunade said the governor’s administration has, however, recorded sterling achievements that have propelled the state on a positive economic trajectory which would outlive it.

Ayo Animashaun DRAGS Heritage Bank To Court Over N185m Dispute

Smooth Promotions, a Lagos-based media company whose properties include Hip Hop World, the hit entertainment channel, Hip TV and The Headies all chaired by Ayo Animashaun has filed a suit at the Federal High Court, in Lagos against Heritage Bank, alleging that the bank has breached all acceptable professional conduct with respect to a transaction that has been the subject of a protracted disagreement.

Smooth Promotions is asking the court to reverse over N185 million in alleged interest rates over and above the agreed interest rate and other entries inputted into its account as at February 2017.

These charges were revealed by an independent audit of the company’s accounts stretching back to 2013.

According to the court papers, the company says it lost in excess of N533,927,562 owing to the failure and refusal of Heritage Bank to insure its property against risk like fire, and or provide information to Smooth Promotions as to insurance on its property following a fire incident on November 6, 2017, despite debiting Smooth Promotions for the insurance premium.

The case, filed by Kemi Pinheiro LP, alleges that Heritage Bank fraudulently deducted insurance premium from Smooth Promotions’ account without remitting the money to the insurance company; charged interests that were not agreed; and a forensic audit found that almost N200 million worth of charges were not correct.

Smooth Promotions’ Executive Director, Adeseun Kolawole-Oyeneye says the company will pursue all available legal means to seek redress.

Mum Held In Dubai After Calling Ex's New Wife A 'Horse' To Be Released

A mum arrested in Dubai after calling her ex-husband's new lover a "horse" on Facebook will finally be allowed to come back to the UK.

Laleh Shahravesh had collapsed in court after she was originally told her case would be adjourned for a week.

But judge Mohamed Mustafa Ibrahim Khalil in United Arab Emirates (UAE) rushed through the ruling today.

The mum, of Richmond, southwest London, was fined £600 for a "misdemeanour".

Speaking immediately after the announcement Laleh said: "Just when I thought this nightmare was never going to end, after the court hearing this morning, now I know I am going home to my daughter!

"I am overcome with happiness and relief. I can't thank Radha and Detained in Dubai enough and all the support I received from the public."

It was previously feared she'd spend years in jail in UAE after she was arrested at Dubai Airport.

She wept in court at a previous hearing and shouted "no, no".

Her ex's second wife Samah Al Hammadi, 42, had complained to authorities Ms Shahravesh had called her a "horse" on Facebook three years ago.

Speaking after the previous hearing, Ms Shahravesh said: "I just feel so sick and don't know how I am going to cope with more time here.

"I really had hoped that the case would be dropped and I could go home to my daughter Paris.

"I know she is going to be devastated like me when she finds out. I'm not sure how we will both cope being apart."

Ms Shahravesh, who works in a homeless shelter, and her sister Laden Perry feared she'd lose her job if jailed.

When Laleh told them she can’t afford to stay in even a cheap hotel while she waits and is in danger of becoming homeless in Dubai," she said.

Dubai’s cybercrime laws state that an old social media post from before a person visits Dubai can see them heavily fined and jailed for years.

Brits Would Happily Give Up Their Best Friend For £131,000, Study Finds

A new study has found that a lot of Brits would be willing to say goodbye to their bestest pal for just £131,000.

The research, commissioned by Foxy Bingo, saw 2,000 men and women be questioned over just how much money it would take for them to ditch their friend.

And 40 percent of the participants admitted they would definitely bin their bestie for the right amount.

Results showed that of those asked, women would give up their BFF for just £106,000, while men would require a bit more money at £180,000.

This put the average sum at £131,000.

Of all those questioned, those who lived in Liverpool were found to be the 'least loyal' to their mates,
saying they would only need £62,000 to sever ties.

Meanwhile those in Glasgow, would need a bit more incentive as they asked for a £200,000 cheque to do the deed.
