APC Raises Alarm: PDP plotting secret voting to take over new National Assembly

Some All Progressives Congress (APC) Senators-elect are suspecting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of plotting a secret ballot voting system to hijack the leadership of the National Assembly.

APC senators-elect, who pleaded anonymity, said the PDP was perfecting this plot ahead of the inauguration of the 9th session in June.

An APC senator-elect accused the PDP of “already laying political landmines in the path of APC” with a view to having the legislative gavel by proxy.

The source said: “While the opposition party cannot reinvent the wheel in terms of the colouration of the legislature during the 9th session of National Assembly, it is trying to foist on the winning party, the Senate in particular, APC candidates that would do its bidding, using the Rule Book of National Assembly to achieve it.

“In implementing the plan, members of the opposition, with a large war chest made available by those being investigated by anti-corruption agencies, are ready to infiltrate National Assembly bureaucracy to perfect their plan.”

A ranking APC Senator said: “PDP is using their chieftains. They will begin the implementation of the two-pronged plan by engaging the top echelon of National Assembly bureaucracy and some APC Senators-elect for their buy-in on the need to continue the use of the forged 2015 Rule Book, especially its secret ballot provision, which paved the way for the emergence of the current Senate President, Bukola Saraki against the directives of his then party-APC

“You know the former Clerk of the Senate allowed the forged Rule Book to be used during the inauguration of the 8th Senate as he capitalised on the absence of APC Senators in the red chamber and to complicate the situation Senator Saraki insisted on using the forged book after he was sworn in as the Senate President.

“Remember that secret voting provision was smuggled into the forged Rule Book used for the 2015 elections despite our protest because secret voting is alien to parliamentary practices. When it comes to voting in the parliaments worldwide, open voting is used.

“What is now expected of the current Clerk of the National Assembly is not to use the forged book for the inauguration of the 9th Session of the Senate, come June this year.

“What happened in 2015 inauguration will not repeat itself because we shall all be present during this year’s inauguration and we shall not allow the forged Rule Book to be used. We will insist on open voting as practised in all parliaments in the world and the National Assembly bureaucracy has already been put on notice.”

A senator-elect explained: “We underrated the capacity of PDP to go to any length to achieve its aims and objectives during 2015 elections of presiding officers of the National Assembly while we were totally naïve about the crucial role of the bureaucracy in the scheme of things in the legislature, a situation that turned the table in favour of the opposition despite being in the minority. We are aware of their political manoeuvres and ready to expose sources of funds for their National Assembly intervention.”

I Don't Hate My Father For R*ping My Mother – Helen Paul

Nigerians were shocked when popular comedienne, Helen Paul, revealed that she was a product of r*pe while celebrating the doctorate degree she recently got from the University of Lagos.

In an encounter with Sunday Scoop, Helen Paul said she didn’t regret sharing the true story of her birth. She stated, “I chose the occasion to reveal the story of my birth because I dedicated the degree to my mother. There is time for everything and I felt it was time to tell the world.

"Apparently, it’s not even my story; it’s my mother’s.
I am humbled and grateful to God for seeing me through the programme. Everyone was happy for me in my family. Even when I finished secondary school, everyone was excited for me. We celebrate each other in my household.”

According to The Punch's Sunday Scoop, she said despite her father’s misconduct at the time, she had never held any grudge against him. She stated, “I am on good terms with my father. Is there anyone who doesn’t have a cordial relationship with his or her father? That can only happen if you are a terrible child. Regardless of what your father might have done to you in the past, your father remains your father. If I said I was not affected by it while growing up, that wouldn’t be honest. It could affect anyone but I used my situation to my advantage. It inspired me to always do more and be the best, instead of being depressed.”

Helen Paul also stated that she was not done with learning, arguing that once one stopped learning, the person would stop functioning. She said, “I like to learn; so, I will keep learning. Tomorrow, don’t be surprised if you see me learning tailoring or hairdressing. However, there was a time I really wanted to give up while studying for my doctorate degree but I had the right people around me. In life, you cannot do it on your own; you need certain people around you to achieve greatness.”

Killings All Over Nigeria: Military, Police, Plan Special Squads To Face Notorious Bandits

The leadership of the Armed Forces and the Nigerian Police have met and agreed to launch a special joint operation to rout bandits and other criminals currently terrorising residents of the country.

The Defence Headquarters, Abuja, confirmed this on Saturday, saying the armed forces and the police authorities had identified gaps in their efforts and resolved to address those issues together.

The DHQ spokesman, Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, in an interview with The Punch, said the military and police were given “marching orders”, and had carried out a re-evaluation of their efforts against the bandits as well as the next line of action.

Nwachukwu stated, “The leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, under Gen Abayomi Olonisakin, the Chief of the Defence Staff, and the police have met and the meeting was to identify gaps in the operations and how to address those issues.

“There is a special joint operation coming up and all is already set for it. I cannot give you details of the operation. But it will take care of the banditry in the North-West region and other criminalities.”

A top military source, who was part of the meeting, told one of our correspondents that the special joint operation had already been named.

“The special joint operation is already in the pipeline with specific deployments expected from the army, the air force, the navy and the police, even with contributions from the Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Immigration Service,” the source added.

Police need military support to tackle banditry –Police PRO
The Nigeria Police Force had initially told one of our correspondents that the agency required support from other security agencies as well as the cooperation of political leaders among other residents of various communities under attacks by bandits, kidnappers and other criminals to free such areas from the grips of the hoodlums.

The police spokesperson, Mr Frank Mba, told The Punch that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, had toured the affected states to assess the security arrangements in place to curb the activities of the criminals terrorising the states, saying the war would soon be won.

Mba explained that the police under Adamu were already working with indigenes of the affected communities to get useful information needed to rout the criminals and free the communities.

He stated, “What we require to permanently put an end to this menace is a broad-based action with intervention at multiple levels by multiple agencies. We are leading the charge at the security and law enforcement level while we expect support at the political level from the state and local government levels, religious level and traditional institution as well as socio cultural level.

“The present leadership of the force is already adopting community policing strategy as one of its main strategies for combating not only banditry but other forms of crime and criminality. That is why the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has been on tour of the affected areas. The IGP was in Birni Gwari, in Kaduna, he was in Zamfara, Sokoto and Katsina within 72 hours.

“We believe that the Nigeria Police, acting alone all by itself, certainly will not be able to win the war. We need to bring on board more relevant stakeholders and that is what community policing is all about. I want to appeal to Nigerians to be patient and provide us with relevant support. I acknowledge the fact that this is a challenging time but the challenges are certainly not insurmountable.

Again, military blames Libya, Niger, others for killings
In the same vein, the proliferation and massive flow of weapons from Maghreb countries through Mali, Niger Republic and Chad into Nigeria is a major factor fuelling banditry and killings in Zamfara State and the North-West region, military intelligence has shown.

The military noted that the Arab Spring in the Maghreb countries, consisting of Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania, had led to more arms in-flow into West Africa, which bandits used to perpetrate killings and crimes in North-West Nigeria.

The Defence Headquarters, Abuja, confirmed these submissions on Saturday, noting that “since the Arab Spring and collapse of the Gaddafi administration, there has been a proliferation of arms coming from the Maghreb down through Mali into Niger, Chad and Nigeria.”

This was the same position taken by the Federal Government and its armed forces in the height of the Boko Haram insurgency, when the FG identified Libya as the source of massive arms supplies to the terrorists.

It equally fingered Niger Republic and Chad as major corridors the insurgents utilised to ferry their weapons to Nigeria. The military also pointed out that the terrorists received training in Mali and Libya.

The acting Director, Defence Information, Col Onyema Nwachukwu, in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, said there were deliberations with these countries to solve this challenge, because “this has become a sub-regional problem.”

Nwachukwu noted that bandits came in from Niger Republic, which emphasised the cross-border nature of criminal activities in the North, compelling the military to adopt a multi-faceted approach.

On Friday, the Nigerian Air Force said it had intensified Operation Diran Mikiya in the North-West, noting that during its air interdictions, many bandits in Zamfara were seen fleeing across the border into the southern part of Niger Republic.

The NAF had also refuted claims that it bombed innocent civilians as bandits, demanding the traditional rulers in Zamfara State to produce the evidence that civilians were targeted by the air strikes.

This demand came after traditional rulers in the state, the Zamfara Council of Chiefs, had alleged on Thursday that many innocent villagers were killed in misdirected air strikes by the military in the ongoing fight against bandits in the state.

The DHQ said on Saturday that arms proliferation from the Maghreb helped the banditry in Zamfara, adding that the armed forces of Nigeria, under the leadership of Olonisakin, had met and carried out a re-evaluation of efforts to rout the bandits.

The DHQ spokesman stated, “Since the Arab Spring and collapse of the Gaddafi administration (in Libya), there has been a proliferation of arms coming from the Maghreb down through Mali into Niger, Chad and Nigeria. We expected that and there have been deliberations with these countries to solve this problem, because this has become a sub-regional problem.

“The problem in Zamfara is not about banditry alone. You have some socio-economic interests also because of the illegal gold mining activities.

“On the issue of bandits coming from Niger Republic, we believe that there are some cross-border bandits and this makes it a multi-faceted task before us. That is why we believe the efforts should be all encompassing. Of course, we have that effort under the auspices of the Multi-National Joint Task Force in the North-East, and in the North-West region, it will be done also.

“There is this flow of arms coming in from the Maghreb. The porosity of our borders is a problem. Perhaps after the clearance of the bandits’ hideouts in Zamfara, those agencies in charge of the borders must be empowered to prevent such cross-border criminals.”

Nwachukwu added that all the security agencies had ongoing operations in the North-West which were all in support of Operation Sharan Daji being carried out by the armed forces.

We remain committed to our mandate –DSS
Also, the Department of State Services has said it is committed to professionally discharging its mandate without prejudice to times or seasons.

Spokesman for the service, Mr. Peter Afunnaya, said this in a telephone interview, in Abuja on Saturday. He was responding to enquiries from The Punch with respect to what the service was doing about the upsurge of crime and criminality across Nigeria.

These crimes became pronounced soon after the 2019 general elections in February and March.

In response to a question on whether the service had started investigations into the upsurge in crime, such as kidnapping, armed robbery and killings, he said, “The service mandate is clear.

“We are to protect and defend the Federal Republic of Nigeria against domestic threats whatever they may be, to uphold the criminal laws of Nigeria and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to both the federal and state law enforcement organs. We remain professionally committed to this mandate and have continually provided these services before, during and after the election.”

Meghan Markle Won't Be Able To Keep All The Gifts She's Sent For Royal Baby

When you have a baby, you are often showered with presents from friends and family members to mark the occassion.

From stuffed animals to tiny pieces of clothing, you can expect to receive a whole range of things.

This will be the case for Meghan Markle, 37, and Prince Harry, 34, very soon, after their first child is born.

However unlike most new parents, they won't be able to enjoy and keep all of the things they have been given for the baby - instead they will have to pack many of the gifts up and return them.

This is because there are many royal rules they have to follow around gifts, including ones given to them to celebrate birthdays, Christmas, weddings and anniversaries.

The Royal Family's guidelines state: "The fundamental principle governing the acceptance of gifts by Members of The Royal Family is that no gifts, including hospitality or services, should be accepted which would, or might appear to, place the Member of The Royal Family under any obligation to the donor.

"In this regard, before accepting any gift, careful consideration should always be given, wherever practicable, to the donor, the reason for and occasion of the gift and the nature of the gift itself. Equally, before declining the offer of a gift, careful consideration should be given to any offence that might be caused by such an action."

Mum-Of-Four Looks 10 Years Younger After Dramatic Seven Stone Weight Loss

A mum looks 10 years younger after an incredible weight loss transformation that has changed her life.

After years of indulging in fizzy drinks and unhealthy snacks, Clare O’Brien tipped the scales at 18st 9lbs and had to buy size 24 clothes.

The mum-of-four said tying her shoe laces was a struggle and she would shy away from socialising due to her weight.

But now the 43-year-old "can't stop buying clothes" and has a big smile on her face after losing a whopping 100lbs (7st 4lbs).

She says people keep mistaking her before and after pictures as a mother and daughter.

But the best thing of all is that she has a new lease of life and is spending more time doing things she enjoys, such as going to the theatre.

"It sounds stupid but my husband fitted these wardrobes with mirrored doors on in the bedroom," she said, describing the turning point.

"Before then we had just the one mirror on a single door, so I didn't really look at myself as much.

"But when they were fitted it was like I was sort of faced with what I looked like.

"I would struggle to do things people just take for granted like bending down, or tying my shoelaces - silly things like that.

"If we were going to a restaurant I would think 'oh god will I fit round the table' it was just a constant worry."

Clare who has children aged 19, 18, 12 and 11 said before her weight loss she would eat for convenience and would fill up on junk food including cakes and biscuits.

The Tesco shop assistant also said she would regularly make up excuses to miss gatherings with family or friends.

"I never went out," she said.

"My husband is ex forces and we used to go out to dinners and stuff like that but I would say 'you go on your own'.

"Or if the kids asked me to go swimming with them I would say 'ask your dad' because I didn't want to get into a costume.

"When I think about it now my weight was really holding me back."

Good Nurse Rescues A Dying Drug Addict In Lagos

As shared by the Nurse: A man was seen yesterday on Lagos island, along bristol busstop having episodes of twitching non stop (for over 45 mins). Everyone was around but couldn't do much, I heard he consumes TRAMADOL a lot, but this accident happened after he was beaten up by some market people he tried to steel from.

Like I said in my previous post, Goodness is an act that not Everyone possesses. I waited and watched for assistance to come. As a nurse I felt sorry for him but helpless at that moment because I don't have tools to help him.

Luckily the lasebus (Lagos State Emergency Ambulance) came in time, and I quickly introduce myself as a registered nurse who was ready to render assistance. Immediately I was welcomed by a wonderful colleague and the ambulance driver.

The patient was picked by the road side, and all necessary emergency resuscitation measures were taken. Though he is not very stable yet but much better and in good hands. I wish him fast recovery.

APC Reacts To Ahmed Lawan's Meeting With PDP

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday said it has no problem with Ahmad Lawan, its choice for the position of Senate President, meeting with relevant stakeholders in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to canvass for their votes.

Despite the threat by Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of APC, that it will have nothing to do with the PDP because the APC is the majority in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Lawan was reported to have met with some PDP senators and governors, soliciting their support.

However, speaking in a chat with INDEPENDENT, Lanre Issa-Onilu, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, said the party has no problem with Lawan meeting with the PDP to canvass for votes.

According to him, it won’t be a bad thing if Lawan can also get votes from PDP senators on the day of election.

He said the party is confident that no matter what happens, the interest of the APC is paramount on Lawan’s mind wherever he finds himself.

“Does he not have a right to campaign for the position of Senate Presidency? It doesn’t matter if he reaches out to PDP. If there will be votes from PDP, it is good. Part of the reason why he was chosen by the party is because he has the capacity to reach out across the divide.

“So, we don’t have any problem with him relating with anybody. We have absolute confidence that wherever he is, the interest of the party is uppermost on his mind; and that is the most important thing.”

How FRSC Officials Chase Led To A Driver's Death

One person was confirmed dead while four others were critically injured on Friday after a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) van chased a taxi driver into a ditch along the Oyo-Ibadan Express road.

The taxi driver died, others were rushed to the hospital. The FRSC officials escaped.

The FRSC Hilux van with code No. 1139(3) was reported to have been in pursuit of presumed road traffic defaulters in a Nissan Micra vehicle with registration No. Lagos KSF 831.

However, while speaking with a news correspondent on Saturday in Ibadan, Mr Seun Onijala, Oyo State FRSC Corps Education Officer, denied that any one died in the accident.

He said the accident involved six persons and three persons were injured while the remaining three persons were unhurt.

“Nobody died in the accident and I am telling you the true picture of what happened. The officials asked the Micra car to stop and the driver refused to do so and decided to turn the wheel of the car to the officials at the right and left side of the road with the aim of knocking them down.

“The FRSC officials were able to move away to the other side of road and the driver of the Micra car moved on and the patrol team van gave the Micra car a chase.

“In the process of the chase, a trailer was coming on the one way of the road and the option for the Micra car and the FRSC Van was either to both have a head-on–collision with the trailer or fell into the wide hole by the roadside,’’ Onijala said.

He said that both the Micra car and the patrol team van plunged into the wide hole by the roadside and three persons were injured and the remaining three were unhurt but nobody died in the accident.

Onijala said the command had always warned its officers not to chase any vehicle that committed an offence but to leave them and get their plate number to apprehend and punish them later.

Don’t Rename Development Varsity After Me, Ex-Ghanaian President Tells Education Ministry

Former president of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings, has rejected an attempt by the nation’s Ministry of Education to rename the University of Development Studies after him.

The UDS is part of four schools that the Education ministry included in a draft bill, which is aimed at renaming four tertiary institutions after notable Ghanaian personalities.

Rawlings rejected the government’s offer on his verified Facebook page. He said, “The former President has taken particular note of the plan to re-name four universities after eminent Ghanaian personalities, including the naming of the University of Development Studies (UDS) after him.

“When the proposal for the naming of the UDS was first brought to the former President’s attention by the Education Minister in 2017, he thanked the President and the government for the honour, but politely declined the offer because he had a long-standing principle not to have national monuments and facilities named after him.

“The former President has since the publication of the details of the new bill to be tabled to Parliament written to the Minister of Education to reiterate his position and kindly requested that the re-naming of UDS after him be withdrawn from the Draft Bill to be submitted to Parliament.

“The former President once again thanks the President and all those who in diverse ways are keen on recognizing his contribution to the development of Education in the country.”

The affected institutions include the University of Development Studies, the University of Professional Studies Accra, the University of Health and Allied Sciences, as well as the University of the Energy and Natural Resources.

Man Catches Best Friend Undressing Cheating' Wife On Camera He Was Charging

A man in China allegedly caught his wife cheating with his best friend after accidentally leaving on a camera he was charging.

The husband, only known Mr Yang, said the incident unfolded in 2016 when he took his dash camera home and left it charging without knowing it had turned on.

Shocking footage captured the moment his friend Mr Liu, said to be a local mayor, turned up at his home to be greeted by his wife, Cui Hua, who he knew through work.

The footage, captured in August 2016 but only recently shared, shows the pair kissing as they greet.

They then have a brief conversation before Mr Liu appears to start undressing her.

Mr Yang explained he had been hiding the incident as his son was preparing for university entrance exam and only decided to divorce in January 2018.

Mr Yang said he had complained to the local government but had yet received any reply.

Being accused of cheating, Cui Hua replied to ShangYao News that she was a colleague of Mr Liu.

She admitted that the government had received her ex husband's complaint and said: "If this is true, they [the officials] would have given me a warning."

Cui Hua also denied that the footage was taken from a dashcam as she believed it was filmed on a hidden camera.

It's known that Mr Liu has retired from the service and Cui Hua has been appointed as the town's deputy secretary.
