Big Battle In PDP: Dino Melaye To Chance Ekweremadu?

Who among the ranking PDP senators will be the minority leader in the new senate? Three Senators on the platform of the leading opposition party are leading the race for the Minority Leader position in the forthcoming 9th session of the Senate, according to feelers from the party.

Topping the list is the current Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu. Also in contention are
Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West) and Senator Ayo Akinyelure (Ondo Central). Rooting for each of them are diverse groups in the PDP.

Sources told The Nation that while the party appears to be heavily in favour of Ekweremadu emerging as minority leader in view of his vast experience, some other groups in the party have different ideas on who should occupy the position.

The party leadership’s decision, it was gathered, may not be unconnected with the desire for a strong personality to lead the PDP in the next dispensation, as part of a larger plan to hijack the leadership of the National Assembly at an appropriate time.

A party chieftain from the Southeast said the PDP believes Ekweremadu has the ability to keep the APC on its toes.

“The PDP plans to give the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) serious opposition in the next dispensation,” the party chieftain said.

“We want to prove that we have what it takes to be taken serious as a real alternative to the APC by Nigerians. We can only do these when we live up to the people’s expectation from an opposition party, especially in the national assembly.

“To this end, we have considered that the current leadership of our party in the Senate, as represented by the highest ranking senator there, Senator Ekweremadu, be retained in the 9th assembly. We are sure that if he remains the leader of the PDP senators, the APC will be kept on its toes until we take over the assembly.”

Another party leader said Ekweremadu “solidly fits the bill. We need a man like him to stand up to the APC senators.” But PDP stakeholders in the Southwest and the Northcentral are projecting other senators for the plum opposition job.

One source said: “it is incorrect to say there is any crisis in the PDP over this issue.

“Yes, people are suggesting various opinions as regards who should be the Minority Leader even when the party’s national leadership is advocating a particular direction for obvious reasons. But other opinions are welcome and that should not be interpreted to mean there is a crisis.”

Some interest groups in the Southwest recently cautioned the PDP leadership against taking the position of Minority Leader away from the zone.

The Southwest PDP Frontiers (SWPF), led by Asipa Iyanda Adeoye Ogunfojuri, in a statement by him and Ameen Adekanye warned the party against repeating the alleged ill-treatment meted out to the zone during the struggle for the position of national chairman.

“We are speaking out early enough to avoid being told that we kept mute when it mattered, for that was what we were told after the Southwest was disgraced out of the PDP national chairmanship race,” they said.

“The position of Minority Leader in the senate is currently being held by the Southwest, and since nothing has changed as regards the zoning at the national level, it shouldn’t be taken away from us.

“It is worrisome to see that the body language of many of our leaders suggests the possibility of the position being used to compensate another zone for whatever reason. The Southwest will no longer agree to be sacrificed within the opposition party, more so when we have eminently qualified persons that can serve in the said capacity.”

The Nation also gathered that some PDP stakeholders from the Northcentral recently met leaders of the party in the zone and expressed their desire to have Senator Dino Melaye supported to lead the PDP caucus in the senate.

According to sources, the stakeholders pleaded with the leaders against supporting any arrangement that denies the zone a chance to produce the next Minority Leader of the Red Chamber.

“The Northcentral too is pushing for Dino Melaye. In their opinion, the Kogi West senator is eminently qualified and equipped to lead other PDP senators. They also argued that since the zone will be losing the senate presidency currently held by Senator Bukola Saraki, it is just proper that it be compensated with the Minority Leadership in the interest of equity,” the source added.

When the 9th assembly is convened, the Southeast PDP will have at least 11 Senators having lost one seat each in Anambra, Abia and Imo states. One other seat in Imo is still in contention.

The Southsouth PDP will have about 15 senators following the loss of one seat each too in Bayelsa, Edo and Delta states. Party sources said the majority of the senators from the two zones may support the party’s choice.

The Southwest boasts of only three PDP senators-elect. The party got a senate seat each in Ondo, Oyo and Osun states during the last national assembly elections. Dr. Kola Balogun was elected to represent Oyo South while Chief Francis Fadahunsi will be representing Osun East. Both are first timers.

Senator Ayo Akinyelure (Ondo central) is returning for a second term.

He was first elected in 2011, but lost his re-election bid in 2015. He is a ranking senator and sources say he is the candidate of many Southwest PDP leaders and chieftains for the position of Senate Minority Leader in the next dispensation.
“He is the man they want as replacement for current Senate Minority Leader, Biodun Olujimi, who will not be returning to the senate,” said a party source.

The Northcentral will have about five senators in the next dispensation as it could only manage to add a seat each from Kogi and Plateau states to the clean sweep it got in Benue State. The surprise loss of all the three senatorial seats in Kwara, including that of Senate President Bukola Saraki, depleted its numerical strength in the Senate.

Melaye will be the only ranking senator from the zone in the 9th assembly. Senators-elect Gabriel Suswam (Benue northeast), Yisa Orker-Jev (Benue northwest) and Abba Moro (Benue south) are all going to the Senate for the first time. Another fresher is Istifanus Dung from Plateau north.

This perhaps informed the choice of Melaye as the candidate of some major stakeholders in the zone.

Being Almost Lynched Won’t Stop Me From Helping People – Small Doctor

Adekunle Temitope, aka Small Doctor, will not forget the day he was almost lynched in a hurry. But for some soldiers who came around in the nick of time, it could have been a different story for the Penalty singer.

The drama reportedly started when a man claimed that his manhood disappeared after collecting money from the singer. Before Small Doctor could say a word, he was surrounded by people who were ready to lynch him.

Speaking with Sunday Scoop, Small Doctor said the unfortunate event would not stop him from extending helping hands to people on the street.

He said, “Givers, they say, never lack. Giving to people comes from my heart; so, I don’t intend to stop giving. But I have learnt a lesson from this experience and I will now be more careful. There is nothing that can stop me from helping people around me.”

Small Doctor stated that throughout the ordeal, he never feared for his life. He said, “I was just amazed and saddened by how devilish some people can get, but I knew I would not be harmed for doing good.”

The singer revealed that the people involved were at the Abattoir Police Station in Agege, Lagos. He said, “All the culprits are in police custody and the law will take its course. This could have been anybody.”

I Don’t Hate My Dad For Raping My Mum - Helen Paul

Nigerians were shocked when popular comedienne, Helen Paul, revealed that she was a product of r-pe while celebrating the doctorate degree she recently got from the University of Lagos.

In an encounter with Sunday Scoop, Helen Paul said she didn’t regret sharing the true story of her birth. She stated, “I chose the occasion to reveal the story of my birth because I dedicated the degree to my mother.

There is time for everything and I felt it was time to tell the world. Apparently, it’s not even my story; it’s my mother’s. I am humbled and grateful to God for seeing me through the programme. Everyone was happy for me in my family. Even when I finished secondary school, everyone was excited for me. We celebrate each other in my household.”

Paul said despite her father’s misconduct at the time, she had never held any grudge against him. She stated, “I am on good terms with my father. Is there anyone who doesn’t have a cordial relationship with his or her father? That can only happen if you are a terrible child. Regardless of what your father might have done to you in the past, your father remains your father.

If I said I was not affected by it while growing up, that wouldn’t be honest. It could affect anyone but I used my situation to my advantage. It inspired me to always do more and be the best, instead of being depressed.”

Helen Paul also stated that she was not done with learning, arguing that once one stopped learning, the person would stop functioning.

She said, “I like to learn; so, I will keep learning. Tomorrow, don’t be surprised if you see me learning tailoring or hairdressing.  However, there was a time I really wanted to give up while studying for my doctorate degree but I had the right people around me. In life, you cannot do it on your own; you need certain people around you to achieve greatness.”

My Wife Lures My Daughter In Pros-titution – Man Reveals

A 56-year-old businessman, Mr. Aijokwu Christopher has implored an Alagbado Customary Court, Meiran, Lagos, to end his 26-year-old marriage to his wife, Oluwakemi, alleging that she is stubborn, destructive and encourages their only daughter into pro-stitution.

Christopher, who hails from Imo State, told the court that his wife who hails from
Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, whom he married 26 years ago and which union is blessed with four children, is always going against his orders. Giving his evidence, Christopher said,

“I did traditional marriage with her but no dowry was paid based on the agreement between me and her family members to make up for my sending her to school.”

"I had a child outside wedlock before we got married, which I informed her about, but after we got married, she disallowed the boy from mixing with his siblings. To make matters worse, she is always turning my children against me.”

“My wife, Oluwakemi is adulterous; and to worsen it all, she lured our only daughter into pros-titution. She flouts my orders at every opportunity, I don’t love her anymore,” Christopher said.

Oluwakemi was however against the divorce, stating that she still loves her husband and doesn’t want the marriage dissolved. She said, “My husband is a liar; he is a womanizer; in fact I’ve caught him on our matrimonial bed with another woman and when I reported the matter to his elder sister, she asked me to forgive him and forget about the matter, which I did.”

“He favours his first son whom he had before we got married at the expense of our children. Moreover, his family members hate me. I’m not destructive and I did not encourage our daughter into pros-titution,” she said.

“The day he accused me of cheating on him was the day a colleague of mine visited me in our house in company of his wife to-be during my teaching days. The man in question is not my boyfriend.”

One of the couple’s children was also present as witness; he said “Our daddy is fond of nagging us and always in favour of our elder brother to our own detriment. He doesn’t give us upkeep allowance and has locked us outside for two weeks. He has since stopped performing his responsibility as a father,” said Jones.

Giving his judgement, the court president, Chief Odunlami Olatunji dissolved the marriage on the ground of incompatibility and the fact that both are always quarrelsome and fighting.

Why Are Zamfara Killer Bandits Not Kidnapping The Rich Gold Miners?

Senator representing Zamfara Central District, Kabir Marafa, explains factors sustaining banditry in the state, in this interview with The Punch's Sunday Aborisade. Excerpts;

Bandits keep on killing your people in Zamfara despite your outcry. How do you feel about it?
I want to start by thanking Nigerians from all walks of life who came out to protest peacefully against the wanton killing and destruction currently taking place in Zamfara State. This has once again awakened the national spirit that is inherent in Nigerians. I also commend the Federal Government for taking some proactive measures that could curtail the problems. We now have heavy presence of the various security agencies and the military there now. I don’t think a single strategy could be adopted to wipe off the problems. The crisis started several years ago and it will naturally take some time to fully address it.

Many people, especially some of the protesters, believed that President Muhammadu Buhari has not shown enough concern on the matter. Do you also think so?
President Buhari actually feels the pains of the Zamfara people. I have discussed the issue with him on several occasions. I even went to Zamfara with him in a rare privilege journey where he had to put on the army uniform after several years of his retirement from the military.

What are your expectations now that the issue has become a national discourse?
What we need now is for the government at the state level to be serious about the issue. The constant claims by the governor that he had spent huge sums and bought vehicles for the security agents should stop. The governor is not spending his money but that of the Zamfara people. He should rather tell us how much Zamfara earned between 2011 and now; and how much has actually been spent to provide security for the people. The N15bn that the current government in Zamfara State claimed it had spent on security is a far cry from the amount that the officials have spent on themselves and projects they are executing to satisfy certain interests. We want to see some seriousness on the part of the government of Zamfara State.

The acting Inspector-General of Police travelled to Sokoto State recently to address the security challenges there and all the government functionaries were on hand to receive him. But the story was different in Zamfara State when the acting IG went there on the same mission after he left Sokoto. I wonder why our governor is ruling the state from overseas or from other bigger cities in the country. He was elected to work and live in Zamfara State. He is supposed to be doing the work expected of him constitutionally. Let the people see that he has done his best but that his best is not good enough.

Do you think the governor is overwhelmed by the situation, having cried out sometimes ago that he had resigned as the chief security officer of the state?
It is not true that there is nothing the governor can do about the security challenges in the state. If his political opponents today did something wrong, he would tell the Commissioner of Police to arrest them and the CP would carry out his order being the chief security officer of the state. It is when it comes to a serious national issue that he will say that he has no control over the CP. I don’t think what he has done is right. The issue in Zamfara right now requires all the efforts and seriousness to handle.

Have the miners heeded the Federal Government’s directive to vacate the state?
I wouldn’t know if the miners have left the state because I am not the chief security officer of the state. I am just the representative of a portion of the state at the federal level. I don’t have the means of finding out whether the miners have left or whether the security agencies have carried out the 48-hour ultimatum given to the miners to pack and go. I, however, believe that the miners would have seen the seriousness exhibited by the Federal Government and would have left, seeing that it is no longer business as usual.

What is the politics behind the mining activities in Zamfara State?
Mining in the state is just one aspect of the problems. I am not privy to the information available to government before it took the decision to drive away the miners. But the people are concerned that the rich miners exploring very expensive commodity in the remote areas of Zamfara State are unmolested by the bandits. They have never been killed or kidnapped but the criminals are going after the poor villagers, kidnapping and killing them. Our people want to know the magic behind that. They want to know what the miners are doing that stopped the bandits from attacking them.

The people are saying there is a nexus between the miners and the bandits. It is therefore believed in certain quarters that there is a deliberate attempt by the people who are benefiting from the mining activities to scare the locals so that they won’t pay attention to what they are excavating from their soil. If the bandits are looking for money, the miners possess more money than the poor villagers. Some of the miners sleep inside airconditioned rooms in the bush; yet, they are not kidnapped, attacked or killed.

What measures are being taken to ensure that the N10bn approved for Zamfara State would actually be spent on the victims who are directly affected by the crisis?
We have asked the executive arm of government to set up a presidential initiative on Zamfara State so that the body will take care of the money. This is not the first time such body would be set up. We have the presidential initiative on North-East with the government drawing up their operational modalities. The money is necessary and Nigerians should look at it from the fact that it would also help to check the activities of beggars flocking most cities because their needs would be taken care of at home. People, who are displaced and have nowhere to go, would have no option but to start moving into cities to beg. Some able-bodied ones among them could be a tool for anybody to carry out criminal activities. When there is a humanitarian crisis and people are turning a blind eye on it, it won’t take long before it will become everybody’s problem.

INEC has set aside the elections of the APC members in Zamfara State following a court judgement but the governor-elect and other elected lawmakers from the state attended the orientation programme organised for newly elected federal lawmakers. Is it that the judgement has no effect?
I may not know because I am not a judicial officer and I cannot seriously comment on that. But I think there is a failure from the management of the National Assembly because if you go to the website of INEC, you will discover ‘set aside’ in front of the spaces allocated to the elected senators and House of Representatives members from the state. Who are the people that allowed the affected persons to enter the venue of the orientation and why? If there are rules, somebody is supposed to enforce those rules. The induction programme is not open to anybody who is not duly qualified to be there. The management of the National Assembly needs to be asked why they allowed the federal lawmakers from Zamfara State to enter the venue of the orientation programme when their election has been set aside.

To me, it is a show of ignorance on the part of the affected lawmakers because somebody like me could embarrass myself or the people I am representing by attending a function which I know clearly that I am not qualified to attend.

APC Raises Alarm: PDP plotting secret voting to take over new National Assembly

Some All Progressives Congress (APC) Senators-elect are suspecting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of plotting a secret ballot voting system to hijack the leadership of the National Assembly.

APC senators-elect, who pleaded anonymity, said the PDP was perfecting this plot ahead of the inauguration of the 9th session in June.

An APC senator-elect accused the PDP of “already laying political landmines in the path of APC” with a view to having the legislative gavel by proxy.

The source said: “While the opposition party cannot reinvent the wheel in terms of the colouration of the legislature during the 9th session of National Assembly, it is trying to foist on the winning party, the Senate in particular, APC candidates that would do its bidding, using the Rule Book of National Assembly to achieve it.

“In implementing the plan, members of the opposition, with a large war chest made available by those being investigated by anti-corruption agencies, are ready to infiltrate National Assembly bureaucracy to perfect their plan.”

A ranking APC Senator said: “PDP is using their chieftains. They will begin the implementation of the two-pronged plan by engaging the top echelon of National Assembly bureaucracy and some APC Senators-elect for their buy-in on the need to continue the use of the forged 2015 Rule Book, especially its secret ballot provision, which paved the way for the emergence of the current Senate President, Bukola Saraki against the directives of his then party-APC

“You know the former Clerk of the Senate allowed the forged Rule Book to be used during the inauguration of the 8th Senate as he capitalised on the absence of APC Senators in the red chamber and to complicate the situation Senator Saraki insisted on using the forged book after he was sworn in as the Senate President.

“Remember that secret voting provision was smuggled into the forged Rule Book used for the 2015 elections despite our protest because secret voting is alien to parliamentary practices. When it comes to voting in the parliaments worldwide, open voting is used.

“What is now expected of the current Clerk of the National Assembly is not to use the forged book for the inauguration of the 9th Session of the Senate, come June this year.

“What happened in 2015 inauguration will not repeat itself because we shall all be present during this year’s inauguration and we shall not allow the forged Rule Book to be used. We will insist on open voting as practised in all parliaments in the world and the National Assembly bureaucracy has already been put on notice.”

A senator-elect explained: “We underrated the capacity of PDP to go to any length to achieve its aims and objectives during 2015 elections of presiding officers of the National Assembly while we were totally naïve about the crucial role of the bureaucracy in the scheme of things in the legislature, a situation that turned the table in favour of the opposition despite being in the minority. We are aware of their political manoeuvres and ready to expose sources of funds for their National Assembly intervention.”
