“Further information gathered at the scene revealed that the immediate cause of the incident was due to reckless driving on the part of the tricycle driver trying to cross the rail crossing.

An Anambra State High Court has sentenced an Indian hemp dealer, Chukwuebuka Nneji-Olona, to death by hanging for killing a policeman, Corporal Oluwadaini Temidayo.
The policeman was said to have been killed at Oye-Olisa Market, Ogbunike, in the Oyi Local Government Area of the state in 2014.
It was learnt that Temidayo used to harass the hemp dealers, which infuriated them. Nneji-Olona was said to have murdered the victim.
A source told Punch correspondent that the dealer, who felt guilty for killing the policeman, went to a witch doctor for a charm that would prevent the police from arresting him.
The source said, “The defendant, feeling guilty that he killed the victim and for fear of being caught, ran to the house of an herbalist for a ritual that would remove the feeling of guilt that was disturbing him.
“The witch doctor, rather than obliging Nneji-Olona’s request, reported the matter to the local vigilante operatives, who arrested and handed him over to the officers of the Divisional Police Station at Nteje for investigation and prosecution.”
The presiding judge, Justice O.C. Amaechina, in his judgement, said, “After considering the evidence before me, I am left with no doubt as to the facts put forward by the state.
“I accordingly hold that the facts alleged by the state have been established beyond reasonable doubt.
“I, therefore, hold the accused liable of unlawfully killing the victim and find him guilty as charged. Hence, the defendant is sentenced to death by hanging.”
The prosecution counsel, Mrs Stella Ofokansi, said the judgement would serve as a deterrent to others.
She added, “I hope people will learn that they cannot engage in unlawful mob action and get away with it.”
A medical doctor, James Negedu, has been remanded in the Lafia prison for the death of a member of the National Youth Service Corps, Pascaline Madueke, in the Lafia area of Nasarawa State.
Madueke, who was a Batch ‘C’ corps member that served in Adogi, Lafia East Development area of the state, was said to have lost her life following a surgical operation at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia.
It was learnt that the deceased, who had complained of headache, abdominal pain and malaria, was rushed to a private clinic for treatment, before she was referred to the specialist hospital where she died.
During an interview with Punch correspondent, Negedu said the deceased’s uncle, one Ndubuisi, brought her to his clinic on January 18, adding that Madueke complained of headache, abdominal pain, typhoid, malaria and general body pain.
The doctor stated that after conducting some tests on her, she was given some drugs.
He noted that when her condition worsened, a scan was carried out which revealed that she had a pelvic inflammatory disease, as well as a five-month-old dead foetus in her womb.
Negedu said, “After the scan was carried out, I discovered that the deceased didn’t tell me that she was pregnant. I referred her to the DASH with a note containing the details of the incident. She was operated at the gynecology and obstetrics department of the DASH and she died the following day.”
The doctor, while contesting his detention, stated that he referred the corps member to another hospital because he could no longer manage her.
He said, “The doctor that carried out the operation on her has been moving freely without any arrest and prosecution. Why should I be detained for referring her to a government hospital?”
When contacted, the Nasarawa State NYSC Coordinator, Zainab Isa, said Madueke died after a surgery, adding that she did not know the cause of her death.
She said, “I discovered that she died three days before I was informed about her case. I got to know about the incident through the Anambra State coordinator of the scheme who said that some people came to her office in Anambra and informed her that a corps member who was serving in Nasarawa State had died on January 24, 2019.
“When I visited the hospital to see her remains, they were already decomposing. We contacted her next of kin and the mother said they wanted the body of their daughter for burial. We provided an ambulance and the body was taken to Imo State for burial,” the coordinator said.
Isa stated that the matter was reported to the Department of State Services, Nasarawa State Command, and the Nigeria Police Force, which investigated the incident.

The Naija big boy was retired from NAPIMS, a subsidiary of NNPC in August 2015.

“We are here to help, first and foremost. We understand the problem of human trafficking. We understand what it does to the victim, how to fix the victim,” said John Wall, an officer with the Houston police department vice-division.
“We understand they are scared to come forward, but we are going to do everything in our power to keep them safe, give them the services they need to move forward in life.
“If you think about it, children (and) young adults spend an enormous amount of time on social media, and they are vulnerable. They don’t understand the risk involved in talking to individuals they don’t know on that type of forum.
“And, at the end of the day, we hope we can put the trafficker where he belongs, and that’s in prison.”
Ahead of the November 2 governorship election in Kogi State, the Kogi APC Stakeholders Forum, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari and the national body of the party not to foist the incumbent Governor Yahaya Bello on them as its candidate, else the party will lose the election.
Describing Bello as non-performing, the group stated that the governor has damaged President Buhari’s image and goodwill and that of the party, given his capacity to be so cruel to his fellow citizens.
They said that attempting to foist the non-performing governor as candidate by the party will be a great national disservice and will lead to the loss of the state to the opposition.
“We will like to restate that Governor Bello has traumatised, inflicted poverty and fear on our people. People who dare to raise their voice to complain or protest this mistreatment have been summarily killed or intimidated to the extent that a reign of terror is foisted on the people of the state.
“The APC, of which you are the leader, must have the courage to say NO to Bello’s desire to remain Governor of Kogi State for history will judge all of us for all our actions and inactions where and when we had the authority and opportunity to effect a positive change in the affairs of men."
The Ondo State Police Command on Tuesday paraded Deji Adenuga, who set nine members of his estranged girlfriend’s family ablaze at Igbodigo, in Okitipupa area of Ondo State.
The 45-year-old suspect was said to have carried out the dastardly act following a disagreement between him and his then girlfriend, Titi Sanumi.
Paraded before journalists at the headquarters of the Police command in Akure, the state capital, the suspect explained that his estranged girlfriend and her sister, identified as Jumoke (now late) had been extorting money from him for a long time.
He explained that he and Titi had been living like a husband and wife since last year, saying the disagreement began when his ex-lover collected money from him to start a business but she squandered it and terminated her four-month pregnancy.
He added that they had taken each other to the Police station for settlement on many occasions.
He narrated, “What actually happened was that she (Titi) aborted the four-month pregnancy that she had for me while we were dating each other. We have been having issues in recent times and I have spent much money on her.
“I gave her the sum of N30,000 to do petty trading as she sells sachet water. Later, I gave her another sum of N25,000 to keep for me, making it N55,000, but I think she spent the money lavishly because she was staying with me.
“While she was staying with me, her elder sister, Jumoke, used to collect money from me. I later discovered that they were extorting me.
“I went to the Police station to report what she and her elder sister were doing to me, but the Police saw it as a small issue that could be resolved amicably.
“After we left the Police station, they began to abuse me and made jest of me, saying I am a failure and not even a man for dragging them to the Police station.
“In fact, they threatened me. They said they would deal with me and even kill me if I did not desist from reporting them on the street. I now see those words as big threats. So I believe I had to act fast before they carried out their threats.
“That same day, I planned to take the action and I went to the petrol station at night, bought a fuel and stormed their house and poured petrol inside the room while I ran away. My intention was to kill Titi and her sister, I didn’t mean to kill the entire family.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Undie Adie described Adenuga as a notorious criminal who was once imprisoned following a murder case.
According to the commissioner, “It is unfortunate to note that the same suspect is notorious for committing heinous crimes, especially murder, as he had earlier killed his former wife, one Abiye, sometime in year 2000, which led to his being remanded in Olokuta Prison.”
“He, however, escaped with other inmates during a jail break in 2013. The earlier murder case is also going to be looked into with a view to having him face the full weight of the law,” the CP added.
He said Titi was currently undergoing treatment in an undisclosed hospital in the state.

Instagram is testing a feature that would hide the like and view counts of photos and videos you post from your followers.
The app’s parent company, Facebook, announced the test at its F8 East event in New York City on Tuesday.
A photo of the proposed feature obtained by The Fashion Law shows a message that reads: “We want your followers to focus on what you share, not how many likes your posts get. During this test, only you will be able to see the total number of likes on your post.”
In the screenshot, a user’s post is shown with “liked by gregmar and others” underneath the photo, with “others” replacing the number of likes.
Though followers won’t be able to see the like counts during the test, users will still be able to access that information on all of their own posts.
Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri told Buzzfeed News that testing the new feature is “about creating a less pressurized environment where people feel comfortable expressing themselves.”
“We do hear people worry about how many like counts they get,” he added to the outlet.
Besides changing the way the like count works, Instagram also announced changes to one of its most popular features: Instagram Stories.
Starting on Tuesday in the U.S., users will be able to add a “donation” sticker to their Story. The new stickers will create a nonprofit fundraiser to which followers can directly donate from the post.
A new camera design for Stories will make it easier for users to start a post using creative stickers and effects, instead of a photo or video. The new design will be available on the platform in the “coming weeks.”
Instagram is also adding a shopping feature to various creators’ and influencers’ accounts, where those users will be able to link to the clothes, makeup and other products that are featured in their posts.
The app said testing of the new shopping feature with a “small group of creators” will begin next week.

The 64-page passport is produced with enhanced polycarbonate. It is also embedded with the National Identity Number. The new passport costs
N70,000. The new document is part of the passport reform approved by the Federal Government to improve the quality and security of the travel document as well as reduce the incidence of damage, counterfeit, and forgery.

According to the NIS Public Relations Officer, DCI Sunday James, “The National Identity Number is compulsory for all applicants of the new document. To make it easy for applicants, the Nigeria Immigration Service has provided space for the National Identity Management Commission at the service headquarters, Abuja to register applicants and issue to them the NIN.
“The public are advised not to rush for the new booklet as the new enhanced passport will run concurrently with the old one.”
The NIS spokesman further said applicants holding passports with more than six months validity are not eligible for the new booklet except in the case of damage, change of data and those whose booklets were exhausted.
James advised applicants to pay online or directly to the banks situated within the passport offices; he also advised them against patronising touts “as all the service windows are equipped to meet their needs.”
He added that the Comptroller-General of Immigration Service, Muhammad Babandede, had directed passport offices at state commands to continue to issue the old booklet while the service headquarters Abuja would issue the new passport.
A 46-year-old man has been remanded in prison custody in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, for allegedly murdering his wife in the heat of a quarrel over the wife’s demand for s*x.

“In the course of the argument, the husband pushed the woman away but he must had pushed her too hard, as she fell and hit her head on the concrete wall in their bathroom,” a police source said.
Those familiar with the case said when the women fell, the man thinking that his wife was feigning injury, carried and laid her on the bed before leaving for the church vigil.
“It was later when he met the woman still as he left her on the bed that he raised alarm and went to the police station to report the case. He was arrested and detained.”
The charge was not read to the suspect when he was arraigned on Monday, because the magistrate court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case. The file was sent to the DPP for advice.
