Manchester city centre is on lockdown over bomb fears

Workers were evacuated from offices today as a man was arrested by police after reports of a suspicious package in Manchester city centre.

Greater Manchester Police said the 26-year-old man was held by officers and a cordon was put in place following the incident at Piccadilly Gardens.

Photographs from the scene showed officers guarding the area - which would normally be a bustling scene on a Friday lunchtime - where a backpack was left.

Bomb disposal officers from the Royal Logistical Corps were also sent to help investigate the package, and were seen by drivers in a van on the M56 motorway.


All Metrolink stops were suspended between Piccadilly and Victoria and reporters near the gardens described a 'very heavy police presence'.

Former Miss Uruguay found hanged in the bathroom

A former Miss Uruguay pageant winner has been found dead in a Mexico City hotel. Fatimih Dávila, who won the Uruguay pageant in 2006, was identified by city officials as the woman who was found hanged in the bathroom of a guest room early Thursday. She was 31.

There was no official ruling on the manner of death.

The prosecutor's office said a homicide investigation was looking into the circumstances surrounding the hanging and whether the woman killed herself or was killed.


After winning the national pageant, Dávila went on to represent Uruguay in the 2006 Miss Universe pageant, held in Los Angeles.

Since then, she had apparently worked as a model.

The Mexico City district attorney's office said Dávila had arrived in Mexico City on April 23 for a supposed job interview.

From the investigations carried out so far, it was established that an acquaintance helped her to settle in the aforementioned hotel,' the prosecutor's office said according to a press release statement.

Spanish-language press report that the hotel was located on Altadena Street in Colonia Nápoles, Benito Juarez.

The name of the hotel has not been publicly revealed.

Mexican authorities said they were in contact with the Uruguayan embassy in order to notify Dávila family.

Former Aso Rock Chaplain loses wife

The family of Rev. William Okoye, the General Overseer of All Christians Fellowship Mission, has announced the death of his wife, Rev.  Helen Titilayo Okoye. Late Evangelist Helen Okoye Okoye, who was a former Aso Rock Chaplain made the announcement in a statement made available to newsmen on Friday in Abuja

Okoye, who was Head, Aso Rock Villa Chapel and Chaplain to two former Nigerian Presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan said his wife passed away at age 63. “She passed on in the early hours of Thursday, May 2 at the National Hospital, Abuja. “She is survived by her husband, six children, six grand children and other relations.’’

According to him, until her sudden death, she was the founder and coordinator of the Fellowship of Pastors’ Wives and Women in Ministry based in Abuja.

Eye doctor shares shocking photos showing a patient's cornea eaten away by bacteria

An ophthalmologist has shared shocking photos to caution his clients about the dangers of leaving their contact lenses in while they sleep.

Dr. Patrick Vollmer, from Vita Eye Clinic in Shelby, North Carolina, took to Facebook this week to post stomach-churning images of a woman who had her cornea eaten away by bacteria after she frequently left her lenses in overnight.

In a post which has now been viewed by more than 30 million people, the woman's eyes are seen glazed over as they ooze with thick, yellow puss.

Dr Vollmer explains that she is suffering from a 'cultured pseudomonas ulcer' that is 'the direct result of sleeping in contact lenses.'


He states: 'Pseudomonas (bacteria) is an important cause of ocular morbidity and its opportunistic characteristics quickly lead to permanent blindness. This will be the 4th case of cultured pseudomonas that I've treated in my clinic.

'The bacteria explosively eats away at the patients cornea in a matter of days leaving a soupy, white necrosis (dead tissue) in its wake.'.

While Dr Vollmer says he was able to start the patient on antibiotic drops and steroids to reduce permanent scarring, he concedes it will be 'very likely' that she will suffer some form of permanent vision loss.   

'To be very clear, I don't ever recommend sleeping in any brand of SOFT contact lenses. The risks outweigh the benefits every time. It takes seconds to remove your contacts but a potential lifetime of irreversible damage if you choose to leave them in'.

He pleads: 'People need to see these images and remind themselves/family/friends to also be aware of contact lens misuse.'

Reps invite President Buhari over killings, banditry

The House of Representatives on Thursday invited President Muhammadu Buhari, to address the nation on measures taken to tackle rising cases of killings, banditry, armed robbery and kidnappings.

This followed a motion on the urgent “Need for Federal Government’s Intervention on the Ongoing Wanton Killing of Innocent Persons, Destruction of Property,  Armed Robbery and Kidnappings by Heavily Armed Bandits Operating Within Safana/Batsari/Dansamu Federal Constituency”.

The motion was moved by Rep. Ahmed Dayyabu-Safana (APC-Katsina) at plenary.

Dayyabu-Safana said that some villages within his constituency had been serially attacked with many people killed by armed bandits.


He said that as an immediate step in containing the evil activities of the heavily armed bandits, the president should urgently declare a state of emergency in the federal constituency.

“The recent spate of the said attacks on members of my constituency has reached an alarming stage as the perpetrators of this act continuously kill innocent persons in my constituency.

“They set their homes ablaze while defenceless men and women are abducted to an unknown destination.

“Up to four villages within my constituency are currently under attack in the last 48 hours.

“The villages are Massa in Batasari Local Government Area, where no fewer than five persons have been killed, Alhazawa in Safana LGA has been totally displaced. Guzurawa village in Safana LGA also has several persons murdered in cold blood.

“And just yesterday, Gobirawa Village came under attack with no fewer than 12 dead bodies littered in the bush while many are still missing.

“These killings have continued unabated and these bandits seem to be unstoppable with a specific instance at Gobirawa Village in Safana LGA.

“The bereaved villagers there are forced to abandon the corpses during the burial and scamper  for safety,  when they sighted the bandits coming back to launch another offensive,” he said.

He expressed worry that the bandits, who operated both at night and in broad day light on motorbikes, paraded sophisticated weapons including AK 47 assault rifles.

He added that they paraded other dangerous weapons which they used in committing heinous crimes against his constituents.

37 Yahoo Boys Nabbed In Owerri, EFCC Recovers 25 Cars

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), South-east Zonal Office, on Wednesday, arrested 37 suspected internet fraudsters in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

The zonal head, Usman Imam, said the arrest followed a raid on some targeted residences in Okwu Urata, Aladinma and Egbu areas in the state

He said the commission acted on intelligence report, “which pointed that the suspects were living lavish lifestyles without any known means of livelihood.”

He said, the suspects reportedly specialise in defrauding unsuspecting victims, through the internet.

He said, items such as computers, 25 exotic cars, which include several brands of Mercedez-Benz, Lexus, Toyota and expensive mobile phones, were recovered.

“It is true that no society has been able to totally eradicate crime, but we are ready at least to reduce it to the barest minimum and it appears that this cybercrime is one of the challenges of our time, which the EFCC is willing to face drastically,” Mr Imam said.

“What is the business of a university student, a new graduate or youth corper looking for money to buy a car of N10 million? Obviously, this is rushing life and a collapse of our positive value system where people rarely want to start from a humble beginning,” Mr Imam added.

Beautiful Lady Killed & Dumped On The Road In PH (Photos)

This is quite unfortunate. Fear has gripped residents of Port-Harcourt, Rivers state after the lifeless body of an alleged "slay queen" was found at Garrison Bus-top in the state capital.

The lady was said to have been r*ped and murdered by her killers.

She was reportedly killed on Tuesday night but her corpse was discovered by residents on Wednesday, leaving many in panic. Her corpse has been deposited in a mortuary.

Kate Middleton's stylist who transformed Duchess's wardrobe given prestigious honour

A stylist credited with overhauling Kate Middleton's wardrobe became a member of the Royal Victorian Order during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

Natasha Archer was given the honour after being named in the New Year's Honours list 2019 for her services to the royal family.

Pictures uploaded to social media show a beaming Ms Archer at the Palace for court proudly displaying the medal bestowed to her by the Queen.

Another picture showed her with her four-month-old son Theo during a celebratory lunch at the Goring Hotel in west London.


Both snaps were taken by husband Chris Jackson, a world-renowned Getty royal photographer, whom she has been married to since 2017.

For a decade, Ms Archer has travelled around the world with the Cambridges on official tours to help co-ordinate her wardrobe.

The new mum has been working with the royal family since 2007 and was originally Kate's PA.

In 2014, she was promoted to Kate's style advisor and was frequently spotted lugging around cases and suit bags on royal tours.

She has played an important role in William and Kate's lives - predominantly assisting the duchess with her style and travelling the world with the couple on official tours. Big congrats to her.

FAAN shuts Gombe, Kebbi airports over N732m debts

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has withdrawn its aviation security and aerodrome rescue and firefighting personnel from Gombe and Kebbi airports over N732.4m indebtedness.

The General Manager, Corporate Affairs, FAAN, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday, in Lagos.

Yakubu said the withdrawal of FAAN services from both airports, which had technically grounded flight operations, took effect from midnight of May 1.

According to FAAN, Gombe Airport, which is owned by the Gombe State Government, owes the authority N607. 9m while Kebbi Airport, operated by the Kebbi State Government, owes FAAN N124.5m.


FAAN, in a notice to airmen, earlier in April, threatened to withdraw its services from the airports and others indebted to the agency and had given them a deadline of April 30 to clear their outstanding debts.

The agency said, “The authority shall be constrained to commence the implementation of sanctions at the expiration of this notice if the organisations fail or refuse to pay up as advised.

“In view of the above, the authority hereby notifies private airport operators that the services of our aviation security and aerodrome rescue and firefighting personnel will no longer be available for the operations of their airports with effect from May 1.”

The agency had noted that it could no longer keep the personnel at the airports working without payment by the operators and owners.
