Young Girl Rescued In Lagos From Ritualists

A 17-year-old girl identified as Rachel was yesterday rescued from suspected ritualists’ den at Ijanikin, Lagos, where she was taken to by three men.

The girl, a make-up apprentice, was said to have been hypnotised and abducted on Wednesday morning while on an errand along Ibasa Road, Alasia, Ijanikin, a Lagos suburb.

Her abductors took her to a secluded place at Dan Ajayi Street, Ijanikin, where they perfected plans to kill her, but she miraculously regained consciousness and screamed “the blood of Jesus.”

Her scream was said to have attracted neighbours, who invaded the house, but before they got there, the suspected ritualists had escaped through the bush.

A resident, Chika Ugochukwu, said the suspected ritualists packed to the area last year, adding that people hardly bothered about their activities since their home was isolated from others.

Another neighbour, Tochukwu, said the suspects allegedly touched the girl with a charm, which made her to follow them unconsciously.

“The suspects were already preparing the girl to be used for rituals when some neighbours heard her scream. The shrine where they took her to is behind an isolated house at Dan Ajayi Street. The suspects fled when they knew that the game was up,” he said.

Speeding Driver Hits LASTMA Official Into Lagoon

A driver, who was over speeding hit an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on the Third Mainland Bridge. Kehinde Sonaike, a Senior Traffic Law Enforcement Officer from Zone 11, landed inside the lagoon.

He was rescued by four fishermen. The incident occurred around 11am near Adekunle. The driver, sensing the gravity of his action, ran away with his vehicle.

The Nation learnt that Sonaike was assisting a motorist, whose sport utility vehicle (SUV), broke down before he was hit.

The LASTMA car 058 with number plate RTM 165 LA was damaged in the process. The windscreen shattered, the driver’s and passenger’s sides behind the driver were damaged.

Sonaike was rushed to Gbagada General Hospital, Gbagada where he was stabilised. He was later taken to LASTMA Clinic in Oshodi.

The officer told The Nation that he was going to Adekunle from Iyana-Oworonsoki on patrol when he saw a man with his broken down vehicle.

Sonaike said: “Our jobs include assisting people with broken down vehicles to get it to work or call a towing vehicle from our nearest office to help move those vehicles off the road so as to avoid traffic gridlock.

“But, on my way, I saw a broken down vehicle, I came down from the vehicle and put on my hazard light so that I can assist the driver. As I was assisting the man, a vehicle came and bashed the LASTMA car from the rear, hit me in the process and the next thing I saw was that I fell off from the Third Mainland Bridge into the lagoon. I can swim a little, but the fishermen now came for my rescue. They are about four in number.”

The Traffic Law Enforcement Officer said that was his first experience of such incident.

“I have heard many sad stories of how our men were knocked down by hit-and-run drivers but that was my first experience. I can only give glory to God that I’m alive,” he said.

He said he thought he could not survive the incident before help came his way from the fishermen.

He said: “That moment I fell into the lagoon. I felt is this the end of this life because I told my Mum when leaving home in the morning that I will be back but immediately that incident happened I didn’t know what to say again. While I was swimming in that lagoon, what came to my mind that time was that this is the end of life . But, with the little swimming experience I had, I was able to do a little thing before the fishermen men came to my rescue.”

LASTMA General Manager Olawale Musa decried the action of the driver. According to him, if not for God that made the fishermen rescue Sonaike, the agency would be in another mourning mood by now.

He said the injured official is responding to treatment. He advised drivers to be cautious on the road.

Shock As Men Sent To Make Peace In Ebonyi Are Beheaded

Four members of a peace committee set up by both Ebonyi and Benue state governments to end the age-long boundary dispute between the people of Ngbo in Ohaukwu area of Ebonyi and their neighbours Agila, in Ardo area of Benue State, were on Thursday beheaded by unknown warlords.

Last week, Deputy Governors of Ebonyi and Benue states, Dr. Kelechi Igwe and Chief Benson Abonu held a meeting at the Government House, Abakaliki and inaugurated three committees namely; Inter-community peace committee, Ohaukwu/Ado Inter-Local Governments Peace Committee and a Technical Committee with members drawn from the National Boundary Commission, Office of Surveyor General of the Federation and Surveyors General of Ebonyi and Benue states to end killings, maiming and destruction in the crisis.

But on Wednesday, four members of the peace committee who hailed from
Ngbo community, in the Ohaukwu LGA of Ebonyi State, were beheaded, while two others sustained severe injuries on their way to a peace meeting in Benue State over the crisis.

The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, on Thursday summoned a stakeholders’ meeting of people from the area and ordered the arrest of the chairman, Ohaukwu LGA of Ebonyi state, Hon. Clement Odah and 39 others over the killing.

The incident took place barely a week after the inauguration of the committees, The Punch reports.

Visibly angry Umahi ordered the police and the Department of State Services in the state to arrest stakeholders from the area and interrogate them over the crisis.

“Those arrested will be going to the police and DSS every day over the matter after their bail,” he said.

The governor said the killing was not ordinary and accused the stakeholders of causing the crisis.

He said, “I am not a fool. These things are done by you people. There is no any other person that did it. It is like you give somebody salt, you give him water. How can you say that these people killed were ambushed?

“I have asked them to audit all your resources, those of you from Ohaukwu Local Government Area.”

We Were R*ped, Beaten By Policemen — Abuja Ladies Caught In Prostitution

Seven ladies who were arrested in Abuja and convicted by a mobile court for pros-titution have alleged that policemen attached to the Utako and Gwarimpa police stations in Abuja r*ped and physically assaulted them while in police custody.
The ladies also claimed that the police compelled them to plead guilty when they were arraigned before the court on Monday.

Narrating their ordeal to journalists on Thursday, the ladies, who spoke anonymously, said after their arrest at a night club and a hotel, the police allegedly threw them into a cell and repeatedly tear-gassed them.

One of the victims, explained that a policeman attached to the Utako Police station, who was simply identified as ‘Yellow,’ allegedly hit her with a baton and also flogged her with a horse whip several times, injuring her arm and face in the process.

Her explanations were also corroborated by her co-convicts who lamented the alleged emotional abuse and physical torture they suffered while in detention.

Another victim, who claimed to have been arrested at a shopping plaza, said the policemen attached to the FCT ministerial task allegedly r*ped her when she could not pay them.

She stated, “Three of us were brought out of the van and r*ped by the policemen because we had no money to give them. We were r*ped behind the National War College, Abuja. They pushed me to the ground and held me there while one of them r*ped me. He didn’t wear a condom. The other girls were also r*ped by two others one of who used a pure water sachet as condom.”

Another victim said she was picked up by the police at a hotel where she attended a birthday bash.

She stated, “I was invited to a birthday party at an apartment in a hotel. I came to the reception to get water and a woman suddenly held my hands and pushed me out of the hotel. I saw a lot of people with cameras and some with mobile phones taking my pictures and shooting a video of the arrest.

“They took me to Zone 6 police station and from there to the Utako police station. I was on my period and I begged a policewoman to help me with a pad, but she refused. We were not allowed to make phone calls to our family members; I don’t know how my sister got to know, and she brought a pad for me.”

“When I wanted to use it, a male policeman followed me inside the toilet and was watching me. This is not fair. A policeman, Yellow, beat me when I demanded my phone. The next day, they took us to Life Camp police station after which they took us to Area 3. The policemen said we should plead guilty before the court otherwise, we would be remanded in prison.”

An activist, Dorothy Njemanze, also narrated her experience in the hands of policemen who allegedly molested her, adding that she was awarded N6m damages by the court in 2017. She lamented that the Federal Government had refused to pay the award.

The acting FCT police spokesman, ASP Gajere Danjuma, said the commissioner of police was aware of the allegations which he said were being investigated.

Wike gets seven days to reopen Rivers NDDC office

Youths of the Niger Delta states have given Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike seven days to unseal headquarters of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on Aba road in Port Harcourt.

The youths, drawn from the nine states in the region, warned Wike to reopen the commission’s office within the seven days or face stiff and sustainable protests and unrests.

They spoke under the aegis of the Consolidated Youths of Niger Delta (CYN), led by the National Coordinator, Comrade Frank Naday.

Naday, who addressed reporters after their emergency meeting in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, explained that the office was sealed about a week ago over non-remittances of revenues due to the government.

He said: “From our findings and the information available to us, it is clear that the commission has paid the backlog of money it owes the Rivers State government. We ask the government to unseal the commission’s office complex to enable workers gain access to their offices.

“NDDC is bigger than Rivers State because it covers the Niger Delta region. We know the state government is trying to play politics with the commission because the system feels threatened that the Prof. Nelson Brambaifa-led administration is doing well.”

The youths, who worried that efforts at addressing their plights through the NDDC were being thwarted by the Rivers State government, appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene as the peace in the region may be truncated.

Court sentences man to death for kidnapping, murder

The Jigawa State High court 4 sitting in Dutse, has sentenced a 39-year-old man, Datti Buba, to death by hanging for allegedly kidnapping and killing two boys in the state.

The presiding judge, Justice Ubale Taura, said the suspect was arraigned on three counts of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping and culpable homicide.

The suspect admitted before the court that he and two others, Adamu Sabo and Usman Idrith committed the offences.

The offences were said to contradict sections 97, 221, and 273 of the penal code.

Justice Taura sentenced Buba to death by hanging for culpable homicide, five years imprisonment for the offence of criminal conspiracy and 10 years imprisonment for kidnapping.

The two other suspects who were arrested for alleged involvement in the kidnapping and killing of the boys were, however, discharged for lack of evidence to justify Buba’s claim that they were his accomplices.

Speaking with NAN after the ruling, Buba said he and his colleagues from Taraba kidnapped the boys and request for N5m. He explained that they decided to kill their victims following their relations’ failure to provide the ransom in good time.

Datti said the victims’ relatives were able to raise only N3,350,000, adding that they killed the hostages after collecting the ransom.

The convict claimed he got only N10,000 from the ransom as his colleagues fled to Taraba immediately after collecting the money.

Mike Adenuga’s son, lover custody battle: Rights group accuses judge of bias

A non-governmental organisation, Legal Defence and Assistance Project, has accused Justice Oyekan Abdullahi of the Lagos State High Court of bias in a case between Eniola, the son of the founder of Globacom Nigeria Limited, Mike Adenuga, and his ex-lover, Damilola Ogun.

The group, made up of lawyers, in a petition to the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Opeyemi Oke, alleged that on August 6, 2018, a magistrate, T.A. Elias, of the Magistrate’s Court of Lagos State, delivered a judgement giving custody of Athena, the daughter of the two estranged lovers, to Damilola.

The petition, dated April 26, 2019, claimed that no appeal was filed by the applicant challenging the judgement of the magistrate’s court.

The legal officer of LEDAP, Adaeze Nkonkelonye, in the petition said despite the existing judgement, Abdullahi granted an order in which she relied on a “fraudulent agreement” signed and presented by only the applicant’s counsel which gave custody to the applicant (Eniola).

According to Nkonkelonye, Damilola’s former counsel – Falana & Falana’s Chambers – denied being party to the agreement.

She claimed that it was discovered that there was no court proceeding on the date, alleging that the court order was made in the absence of both counsel and parties during a court vacation.

The petition read in part, “We humbly request that this matter be transferred from Justice Oyekan Abdullahi due to a clear display of bias which has amounted to a meltdown of injustice.

“On August 6, 2018, His Honour, T.A. Elias of the Magistrate’s Court of Lagos State, who is also the first respondent in the suit, delivered a judgement giving custody of Athena Adenuga to the second respondent, Miss Damilola Ogun.

“In view of the said order, we filed an appeal which has been filed and subsequently filed a stay of execution and stay of proceedings at both the lower court and the Court of Appeal.

“Despite the pending applications, Justice Oyekan Abdullahi made an order on April 3, 2019, for the search and rescue of Miss Athena Adenuga, depriving our client the benefit of the pending judgement of the magistrate’s court. We further filed an appeal against the said order.

“However, the court has ignored the said appeal and pending applications and further ordered the illegal arrest and detention of our client,” the petition added.

Nkonkelonye urged the Chief Judge to intervene in the matter by “immediately transferring the matter from the judge to avoid continuous harassment, intimidation and abuse” of Damilola.

It had been reported that Eniola and Damilola dated during which the 25-year-old became pregnant and had the child.

Disagreement broke out between the duo and their families, resulting in a series of legal battles for the custody of the child.

You're Wandering Abroad While Bandits Are Killings Nigerians - PDP Slams Buhari

The leading opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of “wandering abroad” while bandits are having a field day in the country.

Buhari is currently in the UK on what the presidency described as a “private visit”. Since he left, attacks by suspected bandits and kidnappers have continued in parts of the country, most recently in Daura, his hometown in Katsina state, and Zamfara state.

In a statement on Thursday, PDP spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan said Buhari’s absence has emboldened the attackers.

He asked the president to immediately cut short his so called 'private trip' and return to address the incessant killings in parts of the country.

“The Party describes as completely unacceptable for President Buhari to practically abandon his responsibilities, as the Commander-In-Chief, at least for now, to pursue unexplained private matters in foreign lands, while bandits, marauders and insurgents seize our nation; maim, kidnap and kill our citizens with reckless abandon,” Ologbondiyan said.

“President Buhari’s inattention has emboldened insurgents and bandits to continue to over-run communities, unleash mayhem and bloodletting on citizens in Borno, Zamfara, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe Taraba, Kaduna, Benue, Kogi and other states of the federation, including Mr. President’s home state, Katsina.”

He accused the president of not demonstrating required capacity to tackle the insecurity in the country and “now resorts to cheap escapism.”

“The situation in Nigeria today signposts the terrible condition our nation will face if the Presidential mandate is not retrieved at the tribunal to enable competent and uncompromised hands to run the affairs of our country,” the statement added.

“The PDP therefore calls on President Buhari to immediately return home and use the remaining part of his tenure to seek help instead of wandering abroad under the guise of private visits.”

Man In EFCC Trouble After Spending All $59,220 Erroneously Paid Into His Account

A businessman, James Olaoluwaniyi, has been arraigned by the EFCC for allegedly converting to personal use the sum of $59,220 erroneously transferred into his account by Sterling Bank.

Olaoluwaniyi subsequently sued the EFCC, pleading unlawful detention; while he also asked for a cost of N50,000 against the commission.

At the hearing in a Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday, however, the court awarded N20,000 in favour of the EFCC, NAN reports.

The applicants in the suit are Olaoluwaniyi and a company, Triump Energy Nig. Ltd.

Justice Chuka Obiozor awarded the cost against Olaoluwaniyi, while granting an adjournment in the suit to enable his counsel to affix the Nigeria Bar Association seal to his court processes.

The EFCC and Sterling Bank Plc are joined as first and second respondents respectively.

In a motion on notice, the applicant is seeking a declaration that his arrest and continued detention by the EFCC at the instance of Sterling Bank since February 5, over his alleged utilisation of funds mistakenly credited into his account by the bank, is unlawful.

The motion was brought pursuant to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure Rules, 2009.

Olaoluwaniyi wants the court to declare his arrest and detention as unconstitutional, claiming that his act did not amount to a crime.

He argues that no intention to commit the offence has been established by the respondents.

Mr. NEC Nzebude announced appearance for the applicant on Thursday, while Mr. N.N. Anana, appeared with Mrs. Chineye Okezie for the EFCC, and Mr. S.O. Elimihe represented Sterling Bank.

The motion dated February 27 was filed by his counsel on February 28, but midway into adoption of his processes, the court noticed that applicant’s court papers had no NBA seals as required by law.

When the court demanded an explanation, the applicant’s counsel informed the court that his partner who prepared and filed the processes failed to affix the seals.

He then urged the court to grant a short adjournment to enable him to regularise the processes.

In response, EFCC counsel (Anana) opposed the application on the grounds that the case was slated for definite hearing.

He asked for a cost of N50,000 against the applicant in case the court would be inclined to grant the adjournment.

Counsel to the second respondent also adopted the submission of the EFCC in opposing the request for adjournment, and urged the court to either dismiss the case or enter judgment.

The judge noted that bail was at the discretion of the court, but must at all times be exercised judiciously.

Describing the absence of the NBA Seal as an irregularity, the court, consequently, adjourned the case until June 26 for definite hearing, but awarded a cost of N20,000 in favour of each of the EFCC and Sterling Bank, which should be paid on or before the adjourned date.

In the suit, the applicant is seeking a court order, directing the EFCC, its officers and agents, to release him from custody with immediate effect, as well as an order of perpetual injunction, restraining them from further interfering with his liberty.

Meanwhile, in a counter-affidavit, deposed to by one Mr. Calistus Egwuonwu, EFCC averred that it received a petition on June 12, 2018, against the applicant over fraudulent conversion of $59,220 erroneously transferred into his account.

The Commission said that the applicant admitted before it to have converted the fund, but claimed that he had been expecting money in same account from a business partner.

It said that the applicant was informed of the error, but he had already spent $39,554 out of the money, even though he realised that the sender was not his supposed client.

According to the EFCC, the bank was able to debit the sum of $19,666 from the account and an additional $10,000 which was refunded by the applicant after appeals, leaving a balance of $29,000.

EFCC said that it was the continuous refusal of the applicant to pay up the balance that necessitated the petition leading to his arrest.

Besides, the Commission averred that the applicant was not being held or detained on the instigation of any individuals, but was granted bail whose conditions he failed to fulfill.

According to the EFCC, a charge of stealing is pending against the applicant before a Lagos High Court.

How teenager beheaded classmate for sitting with girlfriend

A crazed teen beheaded a schoolmate who he thought had slept with his girlfriend, prosecutors said in court this week.

Mathew Borges was just 15 in November 2016 when he is accused of cutting off the head and hands of Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino, 16, in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Borges killed the Lawrence High School sophomore in a jealous rage after accusing him with sleeping with his girlfriend, causing them to split, prosecutors said in Essex County Superior Court on Monday, according to the Boston Herald.

“I think of killing someone and I smirk … It’s all I think about every day,” he texted the girl, according to Assistant DA Jay Gubitose.

“The next time you see me, look at my eyes because that’s the last time they’ll be like that. They’ll be dead,” he texted her before the brutal murder, according to the report.

The following day, Viloria-Paulino went missing and his decapitated body was later found by a man walking his dog.

A state trooper later found the victim’s head in a bag nearby.

Surveillance video showed the two teens walking toward the river, but Borges initially told police they had gone to smoke pot.

But after Borges was arrested, police found a journal at his home with a last entry to call a few friends, wear bags on their shoes and “kill him,” the prosecutor said.

“The defendant told them he stabbed him to death and cut his head and hands off so he couldn’t be identified,” Gubitose told the court, according to the Herald.

Defense attorney Edward Hayden insisted the most Borges can be accused of doing is burglarizing the dead boy’s home — not butchering him.

“Witnesses who are going to say he committed murder are not reliable,” he said.

Borges is now 17 and being tried as an adult on the first-degree murder charge.

His trial continues and is expected to take three weeks.

IPOB declares May 30 as sit-at-home to remember fallen heroes

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared May 30, 2019 as sit-at-home day throughout Biafraland and Nigeria in remembrance of its fallen heroes and heroines.

The group urged religious institutions across the country to offer special prayers the night before the day for Biafran heroes murdered in cold blood in the region.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group said the day would be a time to remember victims of Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen attacks.

It explained that the entire Biafraland would be in total lock down, adding that there would be no human, vehicular or animal movements across Biafraland on that day.

The statement partly read, “Churches, Mosques, Synagogues and Temples are encouraged to open their places of worship on the midnight of the 29th of May for special prayers in remembrance of all that died as a result of violence and sponsored killings.

“Special vigil will be held at the homes of select Biafran heroes and heroines who were murdered in cold blood in Biafraland.

“This year’s remembrance and sit-at-home order will be special because it will present a unique moment of shared pains and misery for all the families that lost their loved ones to war, hunger, starvation, disease, terrorism and state sponsored killings going on now in Nigeria.

Fans' anger at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's sweet birthday message to Princess Charlotte

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will become parents any day now as they await the arrival of their first royal baby .

But in all the excitement they didn't forget that today is a very special for their niece Princess Charlotte - her fourth birthday.

We imagine the couple have sent Charlotte a lovely present (maybe some slime? Kate said yesterday that her daughter loves the stuff) but they also sent a sweet message on Instagram .

To celebrate the occasion the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge shared three new photos of their daughter, which were shared on the social media plaform.

Meghan and Harry were among the thousands of people who commented on the sweet snap, which was taken by Kate.

They wrote: Happy birthday Charlotte! lots of love, H and M xo" with balloon and birthday cake emojis.

While most people loved the message, others were annoyed they didn't use the word 'princess'.
