Portuguese Prime minister vows to resign if parliament raises teachers' salaries

Portugal faces a political crisis after the Socialist prime minister said his minority government would resign if leftwing allies and centre-right opponents gave final approval in parliament to a controversial pay deal for teachers that they have already backed at the committee stage.

In a televised address to the nation on Friday, António Costa denounced the measure as “financially unsustainable” and “socially unjust”, saying its approval would “compromise Portugal’s international credibility” and demolish the government’s commitment to balance the reversal of austerity measures with fiscal prudence.

The conflict threatens to end the alliance between Mr Costa’s centre-left Socialists and the far-left parties that have provided his minority administration with a working majority in parliament. It could also lead to an early general election ahead of the poll currently scheduled for October.

Mr Costa came to power in November 2015, vowing to “turn the page on austerity” with parliamentary support from the radical Left Bloc (BE) and hardline Communists. But on Thursday, the two leftwing parties joined forces with the centre-right opposition to approve a second reading of proposals for a teacher’s pay deal that the government opposes.

After an emergency cabinet meeting on Friday, Mr Costa said final approval of the bill, expected to be voted on in mid-May, would place “inadmissible” conditions on his government and future administrations that “only voters have the legitimacy to decide on”.

The conflict highlights the difficulties the government faces in setting limits to its own popular pledge to reverse austerity while upholding recent successes in balancing the budget.

Under Mr Costa, the budget deficit has fallen to its lowest level in 45 years of democracy and is projected to move into surplus next year.

Mr Costa said approval of the bill meant a similar pay deal would have to be extended to other public employees, including the military and police, at a cost of €800m a year.

Semenya wins Doha 800m in first race since gender ruling defeat

Caster Semenya won the 800 metres at the Doha Diamond League meeting on Friday in her first race since losing her appeal over a controversial gender ruling, claiming "actions speak louder than words".

The South African, a two-time Olympic champion, timed 1min 54.98sec to defeat Burundi's Francine Niyonsaba, who clocked 1min 57.75sec and Ajee Wilson of the United States in 1min 58.83sec.

Semenya's victory could be her last over 800m before new IAAF rules governing testosterone levels come into operation on May 8.

"Actions speak louder than words. When you're a great champion you always deliver," Semenya told the BBC after setting a new meeting record.

"With me, life has been simple. I'm just here to deliver for the people who love and support me. I'm enjoying each and every moment of my life maybe because I have the love I need from my people."

Asked if she intended to take the medication required to lower her testosterone levels, she later told reporters with a smile: "Hell no, that's an illegal method."

Semenya, 28, was only added to the 800m start list in Doha on Thursday morning, a day after her appeal against a new rule regulating testosterone levels for women athletes was rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The music icon, 72, is already father to two sons, Zachary, eight, and Elijah, six, and gushed that being a parent is 'fantastic' during an interview with The Sun.

In the last decade Elton has married his long-term partner David and welcomed their two sons, but he claimed that he never expected his life to take this turn of events.

Nigeria Is Ruled By Quacks - Bishop Kukah Blows Hot

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has lamented that quacks have taken over every institution in the country, including the country’s political space.

Kukah said that the quest to achieve a united Nigeria, devoid of rationalization and fictionalization, has remained an illusion for the same reason.

The cleric spoke at the National Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, Kukah. He said Nigeria is now one of the most dangerous country to live in.

Kukah said, “The quest for national cohesion remains an illusion and the result, therefore, is that marketing Nigeria becomes an act of frustration. In part because too many issues have still not been resolved.

“Tragically as the population has increased we have not been able to craft a narrative. Is there any institution in Nigeria that has not been taken over by quacks, including our politics?

“There is no institution you can blame in this country, everywhere. That is why it is even so dangerous and so important to think about how to advertise Nigeria. I mean, where do you start?

“I think that the problems in Nigeria have very little to do with the things that we ascribe, but is everything to do with our inability, sheer incapacity to manage diversity. Managing diversity is a science.

“If we do not have a sense of direction and purpose; a nation that does not have a clarity of vision as to where it is going, and what the tools that are required.

“When you live in a country like Nigeria, where people are safer with their nephews, cousins, brothers, sisters, as special assistants, personal assistants, then we are in trouble. How we manage diversity in Nigeria then becomes an issue.”

Continuing, he said, “The question then is if you want to market Nigeria, where do you start from. We are practising politics of a very poor quality.

“Our politics have become so regionalised, fractionalised. Whenever I look at the map of the last elections, I do not feel proud as a Nigerian. That you will have an election where very clearly, the country is divided into two and the lines are precise.

“If this is the kind of country that we have, how do we develop the capacity to manage diversity. When a president is travelling, the governors are struggling to go with him.

“And yet in reality, for those journeys, like when the president is going to China, there must be an academic expert who understands China, who should be able to brief the President.

“This is the only country where the only experts are those manufactured by those in power. Does it not surprise you? The country has become averse to expertise, to intellectual contribution.

“The incredible capacity of our people is in suspended animation. It is really frightening what is happening in Nigeria. With the kidnapping in Katsina yesterday, there are no more sacred spaces in the country.

“It is a mortal sin and a massive scared on Nigeria’s face the millions of young people who are moving around and have turned to crime. It is totally unacceptable that we would live with so much and so many of our people are objects of humiliation around the world.”

Chrissy Teigen praises husband for being her 'strength' during battle with postnatal depression

Chrissy Teigen has revealed husband John Legend was her 'strength' as she battled postnatal depression following the birth of daughter Luna.

The model, 33, praised her musican husband, 40, for being 'really watchful' over her when she struggled after first child Luna arrived in April 2016.

She told The Today Show: 'John and my doctors were my strength. I had such a good group of people that were around and people were really watchful of me.

Speaking of the debilitating condition, she continued: 'I had really changed. It wasn't just being tired, it was being really sad and hard on yourself and down on yourself.

It wasn't just the blues and a lot of us think it is the baby blues you are going through.'

The Sports Illustrated model said she initially thought it was 'natural' to feel that way but praised the people around her for helping her to realise it wasn't.

She said: 'It happened with my first one, with [my daughter] Luna. I just didn't know there was any other way to feel. I thought it was natural to be in this low point.

'I just assumed that was motherhood and no other way around it.

'Until people around me starting telling me they saw distinct changes in my personality that was really helpful to me...'

'Speaking to the women made me realise just what a different feeling it is - it's a unique experience that can be really tough. We encourage everyone to share their stories. Open up the dialogue so there is no stigma.'

Chrissy also has Miles Theodore, 11 months, with All Of Me singer John.

Clara, the estranged wife of a former Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, on Thursday, asked the FCT High Court, Apo, to grant her custody of their 10-year-old son, NAN reports.

Clara said this in her response at the hearing of the petition filed by Mr Chime, seeking the dissolution of their marriage of 11 years.

She said she is ready for the divorce and asked that the court grant her custody of their son as well as a child monthly maintenance fee of N500, 000 monthly.

She further denied any allegation of schizophrenia but said she only saw the CMD of a neural psychiatric facility because her husband brought him home.

The case was adjourned till June 10 for the continuation of hearing.

Manchester city centre is on lockdown over bomb fears

Workers were evacuated from offices today as a man was arrested by police after reports of a suspicious package in Manchester city centre.

Greater Manchester Police said the 26-year-old man was held by officers and a cordon was put in place following the incident at Piccadilly Gardens.

Photographs from the scene showed officers guarding the area - which would normally be a bustling scene on a Friday lunchtime - where a backpack was left.

Bomb disposal officers from the Royal Logistical Corps were also sent to help investigate the package, and were seen by drivers in a van on the M56 motorway.

All Metrolink stops were suspended between Piccadilly and Victoria and reporters near the gardens described a 'very heavy police presence'.
