How You Can Choose Your Baby's Sex Before Birth

by Dr. Abayomi Ajayi
(info@nordicalagos.org)

Do you know you can choose the s*x of your children before they are born? Everyone wants a healthy baby and it is normal to have a preference. Gender selection enables that. It is a procedure that allows intending parents to choose the sex of their baby.

The selection of the gender of a couple’s baby – also sometimes referred to as family balancing – is available through special test procedures in conjunction with IVF/ICSI (In vitro fertilization/ Intracytoplasmic sperm injection).

Normally, all couples have a 50/50 chance of conceiving a boy or a girl; however, you might want to stack the odds in your favour, either for medical or some reasons to balance your family.

You may wish for a specific gender for your child if you wish to prevent inheritance of sex-linked genetic diseases.

There was a time the sex selection process could only be done abroad. Essentially the primary aim of assisted conception is to help couples achieve pregnancy, which is a primary and fundamental human requirement.

Research shows that as parents get closer to achieving their total desired number of children, the gender composition of the children already born becomes an important determinant of whether you would have another child.

Under these conditions, sex selection can help maximise your chances of having a small family size of both sexes. So instead of trying repeatedly and hoping on chance, a more certain method of selecting the sex of the child can be considered.

Sex selection is important for medical reasons in order to eliminate genetic diseases like Haemophila A and Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy that occur in males but are only carried or transferred by females.

If yours is a family with a history of some of these conditions, you could prefer to apply gender selection and opt to have only female children.

Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis or PGD is one of the best scientific methods for selecting the gender of a child. If properly done, PGD is almost 100 per cent certain of selecting the desired sex. In PGD, the woman first goes through IVF, where her ovaries are stimulated using medications to produce eggs.

The eggs are retrieved from her body using a special technique. They are fertilised using her partner’s sperms and in the resulting embryos, small cells are removed from each and analysed to determine the gender of the particular embryo.

Embryos of the desired sex are then transferred into the woman’s womb with the hope that they will attach to the uterine lining and grow into a viable pregnancy.

The gender of an embryo is determined by the chromosomes carried by the sperm. A sperm can carry either the X or the Y chromosome. The woman’s egg only contributes the X chromosome to the fertilised embryo. The presence of the Y chromosome in the sperm will create a male baby (XY). Two X chromosomes – one X from the sperm and one X from the egg – will produce a female baby (XX).

Another method known as Sperm Sorting/Microsort, involves the sperms being sorted using fluorescent technology into Y chromosome for the boy carrying sperms and X chromosome (girl) carrying sperms. The technology is based on the fact that the X chromosome is substantially larger than the Y chromosome.

The process uses a fluorescent DNA stain that attaches to the DNA of each sperm and a sorter to identify and separate the sperms.

However, not all couples are suitable for Microsort. The sperm count of the male partner must be within normal limits (at least 20 million sperms per ml with 50 per cent motility). Sperm samples are collected over a period and banked until a total of about 200 million sperms are collected. They are frozen and sent for sorting.

The sorted samples are sent back usually within three to four weeks and depending on the desired gender, the appropriate sperm is used to inseminate the woman or to fertilise her egg during processes of assisted reproduction.
The chances that the child will be a boy are up to 80 per cent while the chances that they will be a girl are over 90 per cent.

There are pros and cons. In PGD, the embryos may be damaged during testing. The desired sex may not be achieved as all the embryos produced may not be of the desired sex. The Microsort method may also not result in getting the desired gender as it is not 100 per cent effective.

Microsort method is based on separating sperm according to how much DNA is in the sperm. If a sperm with extra or less DNA per chromosome (abnormal sperm) fertilises an egg, it could result in pregnancy failure or a high risk of miscarriage.

Alongside sex determination, PGD can also check if the embryos are genetically normal.

Drama As Elderly Man Trying To Traffic Drugs To Saudi Arabia Gets Nabbed By NDLEA

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Malam Aminu Kano Int'l Airport (MAKIA) have arrested 72-year-old Mohammed Hamza and Kamisu Mohammed, 25, for attempting to ferry illicit drugs from Kano to Saudi Arabia, The Nation reports.

The MAKIA NDLEA Commander, Mr. Ambrose Umoru, said Hamza, who hails from Gwaranduma village, Daura in Katsina state was arrested on April 24 at the screening point, while trying to board an aircraft to Saudi Arabia.

He said further investigations, which led to the arrest of Kamisu Mohammed, revealed that the 72-year- old, a stark illiterate was not aware that drugs were planted inside his luggage.

In fact, the drug peddlers told the old man that they were sponsoring him to perform lesser hajj in the Holy Land. They brought him to Kano from Katsina and lodged him in a hotel for three days during which they planted tramadol inside his luggage, unknown to him.

“When our officers discovered the illicit drugs from his bag, upon interrogation, he told us where he was coming from. Immediately, we deployed our officers inside the town and Kamisu Mohammed was apprehended.”

He added: “The interesting twist on this very case is that the same Kamisu Mohammed was arrested last year for planting drugs inside the luggage of two women, though the women were his partners in crime, unlike the 72-year old man who didn’t know why they were sending him to Saudi Arabia.

“This very Kamisu is on bail over that very case of last year. To show that he is serial criminal, this time when he was arrested, he tried to change his name because the name he gave us last year was Kamisu Safiyanu and this time he told us that his name is Kamisu Mohammed. He is still in our custody and will soon be re-arraigned in court.”

Buhari Will Return Tomorrow - Presidency Insists

The Presidency has dismissed suggestions that President Buhari is undergoing medical treatment in the United Kingdom and may not return to Nigeria on May 5 as originally scheduled.

The President embarked on a 10-day private visit to the UK on April 25. When will he return?

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, reacted on Friday when The Punch sought his views on the issue.

“It is rubbish,” he said. In another separate electronic mail, Shehu said, “This story on the President’s return is absolutely shameful and disgraceful. “(It is) disgusting.”

However, he did not give additional information on Buhari’s trip.

Earlier on, The Punch sought to know whether the President funded the trip from his pocket or the Federal Government did, since it was a private visit. The paper didn’t get responses to the questions, which were asked twice.

Concerns have been raised since April 25 on why Buhari did not write the National Assembly to formally transmit power to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to act as President while he is away in compliance with Section 145(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution.

Buhari did not comply with the provision.

But, the Presidency defended him, saying so long as he would not stay in London for 21 days or more, no constitutional breach had taken place yet.

Trouble As Teacher Damages Student's Eye With Cane

For Daniel Agboola, a Senior Secondary School 2 student of Camp David Academy, Ogba, Lagos State, Friday, March 29 is a date etched in his memory for life. It was the day his teacher, Mr. Oludare Olaleye, damaged his right eye in the process of caning him.

The day had begun like any other as Daniel and his classmates prepared to sit an examination in the school’s hall. Olaleye, the supervisor for the exam, told the students to move out of the hall because the questions for the examination were not ready.
As we moved out, he stood by the narrow door. As the last pupil to leave the hall, I had barely stepped out when he (Olaleye) called me back, saying that I hit him while I was rushing out of the hall,” Daniel recalled.

Convinced that he did not hit Olaleye, Daniel said he politely told him so, but that became his undoing.

“He did not allow me to say any other thing. He took his cane and started beating me,” he said.

Daniel recalled that as Olaleye continued to flog him, the cane landed on his right eye and he collapsed.

He said: “I became weak. It was like I was dead. I could not say anything and did not remember anything. My head was empty. But he probably thought I was pretending, so he beat me the more, asking me to get up. I mustered the last energy in me to get up and I moved out of the hall while he shared the exam papers to my other classmates.

“It was when my classmates shouted that blood was coming out of my eyes that I went to the school’s accountant office to explain everything to her.

“The school sent for a doctor who happened to be one of the school’s parents. She said that nothing was wrong with the eye. Because the eye was swollen, she put ice block on it and said we should seek the advice of an eye specialist.

“The school accountant and I went to the nearby Blue Cross Hospital in Ogba, but we were told that no eye doctor was available and we were referred elsewhere opposite the hospital. On getting there, they too did not have an eye doctor around, so we were referred to another place in the same complex.

“The doctor, after testing the eye, said there was nothing wrong with it. He said it was a minor issue and recommended some eye drops we should buy. The doctor also referred us to Vision Plus, an eye hospital in Ikeja, to check the eye pressure.

“All the while we were moving around, blood was still coming out of my eye. It was swollen, the pain was much and I was not seeing anything with it. I covered the eye from the sun as we headed back to school.

“The accountant and Mr Olaleye later took me to Vision Plus where the eye pressure was checked and we were told to come back for the result the following Monday.

“We went back to the school and I later went home with the eye drops we had bought earlier. I was using the eye drops until the person who was applying them for me discovered that two of them had expired since October last year.”

Daniel added: “On Saturday (the day after the incident), the school took me to Eye Foundation where the eye was tested. The eye surgeon was not around and I was given some other eye drops and tablets.

“They said there was nothing wrong with the eye but that the blood could not flow. So they told us to come back the following Thursday.

“When we got there on Thursday for another round of tests, they still said that nothing was wrong with the eyes.

“It was when we went back there on Friday that we met the eye surgeon who after scan and tests said the eye has traumatic cataract and would need operation.

“He prescribed another eye drop for me because the eye pressure had not gone down. He said the normal eye pressure should be 16 but mine was 32.

“He said the operation could not be done immediately because the pressure of the eye must return to normal first. He said the operation would cost N1 million, but the school said the money was too much and that we should try other hospitals.

“The school also took me to Aricillia Catholic Hospital where they said the lens of my eye, which was supposed to be white, was covered with blood, hence other eye drops were prescribed for me.

“The doctor also said I had traumatic cataract and the operation would cost N1 million.”

Daniel said since the incident, he had not been able to go anywhere.

He said: “I have to sit in one place. I can’t look down; I have to always look straight. I could not even finish my exam.

“I can only see with my left eye. My right eye can no longer see anything. It is very blurred. I can’t read or move the shortest distance with the eye. Even if I hold a phone, I cannot see anything on it.”

Daniel’s mother, Hannah Agboola, blamed the school for not contacting the family immediately the incident occurred. She accused them of taking her son round hospitals without the knowledge of his family.

“What I know is that when something happens to a child, the father, mother or guardian should be first called to be notified and decide on what to be done to the child. I also know that students are not meant to be beaten in schools.”

She lamented that after the teacher beat her son and he fell down, the teacher kept beating him and did nothing to help the boy.

She said: “Daniel could not sleep the night the incident happened. He cried all through the night because he was in pains. His eye was dropping some liquids. It was like the eye wanted to remove from the socket. He was just shouting and rolling on the floor.

“Due to this, my blood pressure rose to over 250. Since the incident, I have not gone to work. I have not been to my shop. I have lost money taking care of Daniel.”

She recalled that two of the eye drops bought for her son were expired.

She said: “We discovered the Monday after the incident on April 1, while applying one of the eye drops given to us, that two of them were expired. One was dripping something like oil. We notified the school on the expired drops, but the school director told us he could not do more than he had done and that we should do whatever we wanted to do.

“But the school director later begged. While this was going on, we were called to come to the school; that officials from the state Ministry of Education were in the school. I went with my son and met two representatives from the ministry.

“The ministry told me they would handle the case; that it was already a government matter and that they would call me. But I have not heard anything from them till today.

“My son is not troublesome, I gave birth to him and I know him well. He has never had a problem with his eyes. Nobody in our family has eye problems. His father and I have sharp eyes.”

Mrs Agboola said that since her son’s eye pressure would not go down, she decided to get a chalet at the Mountain of Fire Ministries where she has been praying for her son.

She said: “The liquid drops have stopped but the eye is still swollen and my son cannot see with the eye. “I need help from Nigerians because this is not how I took my son to school. I want my son’s eyes back. How the operation would be done, the payment for the operation and how he would see again must be sorted out by the school.

When The Nation visited the school, the Head of Schools, who would not disclose her name, said that the incident was an accident.

She said: “There was a case but it was an accident, and it is not as serious as some people have painted it. The state Ministry of Education is involved. The pupil has been well taken care of.

“There is no issue of cataract. We took him to Eye Foundation and we also took him to Aricilla Catholic Hospital. The outcome of all the hospitals we took him to was that there was no report of any serious damage to the eye. And from the medical report, there is no cause for alarm, and there is nothing like the teacher flogged him and he developed cataract. It is not possible.

“From our investigation, we discovered that the boy had eye problem before he came to the school. As a school, we are concerned to make sure that the boy is 100 per cent fit and there is no issue at all with him. The school has been responsible for all the bills.

What actually happened?
According to the head teacher, “it was a case of a teacher trying to flog a child and the child removed his hand and the cane mistakenly went to the side of his eye. That was what happened.

“The teacher is to be blamed because we don’t allow cane in our school. We have a policy here, and there are only two offices that issue cane: in the primary school, the head teacher and in the secondary school, the head of schools, which is myself or the principal. So the teacher has no right to have raised the cane in the first place.

“However, it should be noted and emphasised that there is no cause for alarm. The child is 100 per cent okay and there is nothing like cataract. He is fine. When things like this happen, eye drops will be recommended. But from the hospitals we visited, the results we have with us, including the scan which we have here in our office, he is fine. He was placed on eye drops and medication, but there was no serious damage.”

“As for the teacher, we have our disciplinary procedures. The teacher in question is still in the service of the school, and we need to give the boy more time and certify that the boy is perfectly okay by getting a final report from the various hospitals we took him to before we conclude on the what to be done to the teacher.

“When an accident like this happens, we cannot just disengage the teacher. We have to go through internal disciplinary procedures. To disengage is the last resort.

“A teacher cannot just use a cane to flog a student if he has not done anything. But I said the teacher is at fault because there are other ways of punishment the teacher would have used other than cane. He went to the extent of using cane, against the rules of the school.

“However, a student trying to push a teacher on the walk path, in my own opinion, should be seriously dealt with. In this case, a teacher was at the walk path and the student, not even saying ‘excuse me sir’ but pushing the teacher, and the teacher got offended and called him back to flog him but the student removed his hands and cane went to the side of his eye, which means the student caused it.”

Speaking on the issue, the teacher in question, Olaleye, said the school was writing exam when the incident happened.

He said: “A paper was not available, so I asked that class to leave the hall. The student that moved out of the hall last hit me. I called him back but he lied that he did not hit me. I told him to stretch his hand to give him two strokes of the cane.

“When I wanted to flog him, he was shaking. He removed his hand and the second stroke went to his eyes. He fell down but I thought that as a student, he was pretending. I beat him again so that he would stand up. When he did not, I pulled him up and took him out.

“We took him to different hospitals. The eye was checked and we were told that nothing was wrong with the eye except that there is pressure on the eye, and that they cannot do surgery on the eye because of the high pressure.

“We bought and gave him the medications that were prescribed”.

He said the matter got to the State Ministry of Education, adding that some officials came to the school and he told them what happened.

“It was not intentional. The official only said that was I not aware that I was not supposed to use cane and that the case will get to the Ministry of Health? I don’t know who is escalating the matter. It is not possible that the boy will have cataract.

“Cataract is another issue, according to medical experts. You can verify that online. It is not that we have left them; we communicate with them regularly.”

A general practitioner, Dr Joseph Faniyi, said he was not sure the boy had been given any standard treatment that can avail whatever injury the boy has sustained since the incident happened.

“When the boy was brought to me and I examined the eye, there is likely no doubt that he has developed traumatic cataract. I did not do clinical examination on him, but he sat in front of me and I realised that the right eye has developed traumatic cataract, and if the right thing is not done, he may end up losing the eye.

“I did not do clinical examination. If he cannot see very well with the eye at the time the injury occurred till now, maybe by December, the eye will have gone if nothing standard is done.”

Businessman Shot Dead By Gunmen As They Cart Away Money

A group of gunmen on Friday killed a businessman in Rivers state, carting away an undisclosed amount of money. It was gathered that the incident happened in the early hours of Friday when the businessman, who was only identified as Frank, was attacked inside his office at 11, Ikwerre Road, in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt, the state capital.

An eyewitness, who spoke with Southern City News on condition of anonymity, said that the deceased was just resuming work for the day after dropping off his children in school before he was attacked and killed inside his office.

It was learnt that the deceased ran a small communication company, where he sold phones and call cards.

The source said, “I know Frank well, he was a young and healthy man. He just dropped his children at school and once he got back to the office to resume work for the day, we heard some gunshot and everyone started running.

“We didn’t know that the gunshot we heard was fired at him (the deceased). Frank sold call cards, SIM cards, mobile phones and other phone accessories.

“We heard that his killers did not steal anything from his office. They just came to kill him.”

Another eyewitness, who only identified himself as Uche, told Southern City News that the gunmen, after killing the deceased, carted away a bag containing money.

“Around 10.00am on Friday, we heard the sound of a gunshot and to be honest, we all took off in different directions for safety but someone who managed to peep from somewhere, said the criminals that killed the man, carried a bag and rushed away with it,” the source said.

When contacted, Rivers Police Command Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident, adding that he had yet to get the details of the incident from the DPO of that area.

“I have spoken with the DPO, who has confirmed the incident to me but I’m yet to receive the details.”

Over 1,000 deaths recorded in Congo Ebola epidemic

More than 1,000 people have now died of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, authorities said, as aid workers warned that the highly contagious virus combined with insecurity in the restive region was creating a “deeply worrying situation”.

The current outbreak is the second deadliest on record, after an epidemic killed more than 11,300 people in West Africa in 2014-2016.

Efforts to roll back the outbreak of the haemorrhagic fever have been hampered by fighting but also by resistance within communities to preventative measures, care facilities and safe burials.

“In total, there have been 1008 deaths (942 confirmed and 66 probable),” the health ministry said in a daily update late Friday.

The central African country declared a 10th outbreak of Ebola in 40 years last August centred in the city of Beni in North Kivu province before the virus spread into the neighbouring Ituri region.

The FCT police Command said it had set up a team to probe allegations of r*pe against some of its personnel. The alleged r*pe was said to have occurred on April 27, 2019 when ladies suspected to be s*x workers were raided at Caramelo Night Club by the FCTA Joint Task Team.

Some of the ladies alleged that they were harassed, molested and assaulted by some policemen.

Following the allegation, the Command’s Deputy Spokesman, ASP Gajere Tanimu, in a statement in Abuja said the Command had sent out invitations to individuals that may assist in the investigation.

The statement reads: “The attention of FCT Police Command has been drawn to serious allegations of r*pe against some of its members on social, print and electronic media. Pretty Lady Kills Herself In Lagos Over Issues With Boyfriend

A hardworking lady and resident of Fadausi Street, Ijeshatedo, Lagos State, Kenile Nwabuzor, has killed herself following protracted disagreements between her and her boyfriend identified as David.

The lovers reportedly endured an unhealthy relationship since they met about two years ago.

City Round learnt that the matter came to a head on Thursday, April 11, 2019 when the 26-year-old hairdresser decided to commit suicide after David reportedly said he was no longer interested in the relationship.

Shortly before the incident, she was said to have sent a text message to her boyfriend, lamenting he had made life miserable for her and that she would soon kill herself.

Speaking to City Round during the week, David, a graduate, said he hooked up with Nwabuzor two years ago while she was mourning the death of her mother.

He said Nwabuzor, who is a secondary school leaver, expressed fears that their relationship might not work out because of the disparity in their educational qualifications.

He stated, “She was my girlfriend and I loved her so much. We started dating each other about two years ago. She was not that literate, but I told her it didn’t matter. When we met, she was in distress. Her mother just died then and she was living alone. She said she could not live without her mother. Her brothers are based in Ghana, but they usually sent her money.

“She told me she finished secondary school, but I don’t think so. I really wanted to help her improve on her education. She easily got angry and if she had a disagreement with someone, she might not talk to that person again for years. As our relationship continued, I tried to correct her. I persuaded her to be going to church and bought a Bible for her. We usually had disagreements over petty issues.

“If we had a misunderstanding, I could be in her house for hours begging her and she would not say anything. If I decided to go, that would be another fight. At times, the misunderstanding would last for days.”

David, a photographer, told City Round that Nwabuzor usually accused him of being promiscuous, adding that he found it difficult to dispel her belief.

“Because of the nature of my job, I have girls around me. She would be complaining that I was going out with them. I tried to tell her that she needed to trust me. I also saw boys around her because she was beautiful, yet I trusted her.

Recently, she said I didn’t love her again. She changed her phone’s password to deny me access to her phone. She accused me of sleeping with women. It was true many ladies wanted me to ask them out, but I ignored them,” he added.

David explained that four days before the unfortunate incident, he had missed Nwabuzor’s calls while on an assignment at an event. He said he got back home late that day and returned her calls, but she did not pick them.

The photographer stated that when he called Nwabuzor the next day, she started insulting him and he ended the call.

He went on, “She sent me text messages, but I didn’t reply. On Tuesday, I went to her house to return the charger she lent me and when I was about to leave, she returned all the things I had bought for her. That night, she sent a text message to me, saying that I had stopped loving her since December 2018 when we had fun at different places.

“She said she was no longer interested in the relationship. In my reply, I told her she was free to find her peace anywhere else. On Wednesday morning, I thought about everything again. I knew she was depressed and I had been the person encouraging her. I sent her another message, begging her. Most times, she would be the one to say she was not interested in the relationship, yet she would be crying. I was always the one saying sorry.

“That Thursday, she came to our house for the first time and met with my parents. That was the day my father knew her as my girlfriend. She reported me to him and said she was no longer interested in the relationship. My father sought my opinion and I said I didn’t have any comment.

“She started crying. She called one of her brothers and told him she was coming to Ghana. My father is a clergyman. He tried to counsel her. As my father was talking to her, she was crying. At a point, she stood up and left. Afterwards, I left for my workplace.”

David told our correspondent he was in the studio when he received WhatsApp voice messages from Nwabuzor, but he was busy to listen to them.

He said she later sent a text message to him, saying, “You want to kill me; I will help you kill myself. Thank you for making my life a hell.”

He said immediately after he read the message, he took a motorcycle and headed for her house.

“On getting there, I peeped from her window and saw her body dangling on a rope tied to the ceiling. I shouted and barged into her room. Her neighbours helped me loose the rope while I brought her down. She was already heavy, but I was not feeling the weight.

“I was not in my right senses again. I took her on a motorcycle to a nearby hospital. She was referred to Randle General Hospital. A doctor confirmed her dead on arrival. I called her brother and relations. The police arrested me and detained me for two days. They said I should not have brought her down,”
 he stated.

It was learnt that the deceased was buried on Saturday, April 13 which was David’s 26th birthday.

“I have lost my sleep these days because of the incident. I am still going through the trauma,” David added.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident, said the police had received a distress call from the general hospital that one Kenile Nwabuzor was brought in dead by his boyfriend.

He said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the lady had earlier sent a text message to her boyfriend that she would kill herself. Her corpse was removed and deposited in the Lagos Mainland Hospital morgue.”

APC Don't Trust Lawmakers To Vote Lawal & Gbaja; Insists On Open Ballot

The All Progressives Congress has insisted on open ballot for the election of principal officers for the Ninth National Assembly, which is contrary to the usual practice of secret ballot.

The insistence came even as the opposition Peoples Democratic Party argued that the election should be secret ballot to safeguard the independence of lawmakers in choosing their leaders.

The APC National Working Committee has zoned the Senate President to the North East, but the party went ahead to ignore others and endorse Senator Ahmed Lawan (Yobe North) for the position.

Senators Ali Ndume and Danjume Gone from Borno and Gombe states, respectively, have resolved to contest against the wish of the party leadership.

The APC national leadership had also zoned the position of the Speaker to the South West and endorsed Femi Gbajabiamila from Lagos for the position. But some lawmakers from North Central are protesting against the decision. The opposition members are waiting to take advantage of the discordant tunes to elect their preferred candidates against the wish of the ruling party.

They have therefore insisted that the secret ballot be used in electing the principal officers of the National Assembly to guarantee the independence of the lawmakers in choosing their leaders.

But speaking with The Punch in Abuja, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, challenged the PDP to declare where it stood on the election of principal officers and stop seeking unnecessary attention on a matter for the ruling party.

He said, “That is the extent to which they (PDP) are democratic. Why secret ballot? What are they afraid of? That they cannot stand by what they believe in and for the public to know where they stand.

“Secret ballot is not known to any sanitary democratic practice. It is only people with hidden agenda that look for secret ballot anywhere. If you believe in something you should be able to stand for it.”

He added, “We understand that the PDP has never stood for anything good; so, we know why they want secret ballot. But in any case, what we are doing as the ruling party and a majority party and the party that has the responsibility to superintend over the affairs of the National Assembly is kept under wraps. On the day of the election, the nation will get to see what the majority represents.”

For Stealing His SUV, My Indian Boss Tortures Me In My Dream - Driver makes shocking confession

Operatives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT) must have heard and listened to thousands, if not millions of confessions from suspected criminals, but the confessions of Abba Zamzam (31) take the prize.

The suspect claimed that after stealing and bolting away with his Indian employer’s Toyota Highlander SUV, the man had been appearing in his dreams to attack him.

He later discovered after waking up from one of the nightmares that he was now urinating blood. He alleged that the Indian boss was behind his ordeal.

Zamzam, who appeared glad to have been arrested by the police, said: “Whenever I’m sleeping, my boss would appear in my dream to torment me. When I wake up, I will start convulsing. I have been urinating blood in the last seven days. Please help me to beg him to leave me alone. I have assisted the police to recover his vehicle, but he still keeps tormenting me. He has made my manhood to stop working. I’m begging him to leave me alone because I have returned his vehicle to him.”

The suspect explained that his troubles started after he stole his Indian boss’s SUV and sold it.

Zamzam said he stole Kamal’s SUV out of anger and did not even enjoy the proceeds of the sale. He said that after selling the car, the buyer made half payment and while he was still waiting for the buyer to complete the payment, the man disappeared into thin air.

He decided to take the part payment to Borno State, to his sick mother, who was dying in an IDP camp. On his way, he and other travellers were attacked by members of the dreaded Boko Haram and all the money taken from him.

Zamzam, a professional driver, was arrested by IRT operatives, who trailed him to Maiduguri, Borno state.

The suspect explained that he stole Kamal’s vehicle because the Indian refused to give him salary advance. Zamzam said he needed the advancement to buy food for his wife, children and to also care for his sick mother, who was in the village in Angala Local Government Area of Borno State.

The driver became angry after Kamal refused his request for salary advance. He said that something told him to run away with the vehicle. He sold the vehicle to a man, Adamu, who he met on Victoria Island, Lagos, for N1.2 million. However, the buyer allegedly paid a part payment of N500,000 and disappeared thereafter.

According to New Telegraph, Police disclosed that Kamal, who was dismayed after his vehicle was stolen, wrote a petition to the IG, pleading for the arrest of his driver who was in possession of his SUV.

A crack team of operatives, drafted from the Lagos Annex Office of IRT, led by Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Philips Rieninwa, were deployed to Borno State to track down the driver and recover the vehicle.

After weeks of combing every nook and cranny of Maiduguri metropolis, Zamzam was located. He also led operatives to Adamu’s house where the SUV was recovered.

Zamzam, who said that he resided at Agidingbi area of Lagos State, said: “I work with an Indian company that produces cartons at Sagamu area of Ogun State. I got the job last year. My salary is N45,000. My job is to drive the manager of the company from Surulere to the factory in Sagamu.

“Sometime in July 2018, before I left for work, my wife told me that my child had no food. I told her that I had no money. I begged her to look for where to borrow money that when I returned from work, I would repay the debt. She accepted. On my way to work, I got a call from my village that my mother was very sick. They said money was needed to take her to hospital.

“Before now, my mother has been sick. She became hypertensive after two of my brothers were killed by members of the Boko Haram sect. My late brothers left five children behind. I have been the only person fending for mother and my brothers’ children. When I got the call that she was at the point of death, I was worried. When I got to work, I called my boss and told him what was happening to me. I told him that I needed money to feed my wife and my children. I needed money to send to my sick mother and buy foodstuffs for my wife. I told him to give me the money out of my salary because I had worked for 24 days in that month.”

Zamzam said that instead of Kamal to listen and show sympathy and kindness, he threatened to sack him.

“He refused and threatened to sack me for asking for my salary before the end of the month. I begged him to help me and he insisted on sacking me. I took the car and I went to a beer parlour; I had never taken alcohol, but because of what he told me, I went and bought a bottle of beer. I went to Victoria Island and sold the car for N1.2 million. The buyer gave me part payment and later ran away with the vehicle. I took the money quickly to my village, but on our way, Boko Haram attacked us and made away with the money.”

I have nothing against Tubaba, Wizkid –Lanre Teriba

Gospel musician, Lanre Teriba, was recently trolled on social media for a comment he made about Wizkid, Tubaba and other secular musicians in Nigeria. In the statement, Teriba said some of the big secular musicians in Nigeria were seen as up-and-coming talents in the US.

Following his statement, a lot of people described him as bitter, stressing that he was jealous of the success stories of afrobeat musicians in Nigeria. However, in an interview with Saturday Beats, Teriba said that he had no grudge against any of them, while describing them as great musicians.

“You see, I just mentioned Wizkid and Tuface Idibia as an example because I see them as great musicians that I love so much and respect in this part of the world. I was only trying to express my displeasure as regards to how American promoters and Americans see our great music stars as up-and-coming artistes. It is a great concern to me, so I only made my comment innocently and it was devoid of any form of bias. I didn’t make that comment to trend online because my music is doing very well. These people don’t even see me as a great gospel musician too but I am proud of my talent; I can raise my head high anywhere in the world,” he said.

Further stressing that he had nothing against the likes of Wizkid and Tubaba, Teriba said, “I don’t have any ‘beef’ (problem) with Wizkid. Some people perceived my comment that way based on their feelings and opinions; they have a right to their views.

“I have nothing against them; they are very good and they are making us proud in Nigeria and around the world. I don’t hold any grudge against any of my fellow gospel musicians, so why would I ‘beef’ other artistes doing different genres of music? I can never ‘beef’ Wizkid, Tubaba or any other talent in Nigeria because I see them as my family in the music industry,” he told Saturday Beats.

Lagos hairdresser commits suicide over disagreements with boyfriend

A resident of Fadausi Street, Ijeshatedo, Lagos State, Kenile Nwabuzor, has killed herself following protracted disagreements between her and her boyfriend identified as David.

City Round gathered that the duo had endured an unhealthy relationship since they met about two years ago.

Punch correspondent learnt that the matter came to a head on Thursday, April 11, 2019 when the 26-year-old hairdresser decided to commit suicide after David reportedly said he was no longer interested in the relationship.

Shortly before the incident, she was said to have sent a text message to her boyfriend, lamenting he had made life miserable for her and that she would soon kill herself.

Speaking to Punch correspondent during the week, David, a graduate, said he hooked up with Nwabuzor two years ago while she was mourning the death of her mother.

“Recently, she said I didn’t love her again. She changed her phone’s password to deny me access to her phone. She accused me of sleeping with women. It was true many ladies wanted me to ask them out, but I ignored them,” he added.

David explained that four days before the unfortunate incident, she had missed Nwabuzor’s calls while on an assignment at an event.

They said I should not have brought her down,” he stated.

Punch correspondent learnt that the deceased was buried on Saturday, April 13 which was David’s 26th birthday.

“I have lost my sleep these days because of the incident. I am still going through the trauma,” David added.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident, said the police had received a distress call from the general hospital that one Kenile Nwabuzor was brought in dead by her boyfriend.

He said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the lady had earlier sent a text message to her boyfriend that she would kill herself. Her corpse was removed and deposited in the Lagos Mainland Hospital morgue.”

Buhari May Extend London Private Visit For Health Reasons

President Muhammadu Buhari may not return to the country on Sunday May 5 as scheduled due to some health complications. Inside sources in the Presidency who spoke with SR said there is a high likelihood of the President extending his stay on the orders of his doctors.

President Buhari had travelled to the United Kingdom on April 25 for what the presidency described as a "private visit".

Widespread National Anger
In 2017 during his prolonged absence, Nigerian protesters in Lagos, Abuja and the UK protested after mobilizing using the hashtag #ResumeOrResign demanded that President Muhammadu Buhari either resume his job as president or resign, after more than 90 days of absence.

Demonstrators rallied for three days, demanding action by the government, with many claiming Buhari's absence is unacceptable and harmful for the country.

The demonstrations, led by prominent activists such as Omoyele Sowore, Charles Oputa and Deji Adeyanju forced the President to return home.

His most recent trip is also causing widespread anger from Nigerians, who accuse him of insensitivity to the plight of Nigerians, especially in the wake of rising kidnapping and banditry in the country.

Buhari’s Crohns Disease
Contrary to claims that the President suffers an ear infection, Sahara Reporters in 2017 authoritatively confirmed that Buhari is battling a persistent “internal organ” problem.

The source attributed the President’s inability to eat as well as his progressive loss of weight to Crohn’s Disease, a medical condition that has affected his digestive system.

According to the source, Buhari had had parts of his colon removed in 2013 and also had another operation to have hemorrhoids, swollen veins near the human rectum, removed in 2016 in London during one of his secret trips to seek urgent medical treatment.

They pleaded "not guilty" to the charges.

Based on their plea, prosecuting counsel, Christopher Mschelia, prayed the court for a date for trial to commence as the EFCC was prepared to prove its case against them.

"We are asking your lordship to order that they should be remanded in prison," Mschelia added.

Lead defence counsel, Abdulwahab Bamidele, made an oral application for bail. But Mschelia urged the Court not to grant the request, insisting that "the substantive bail application is not ripe for hearing".

Portuguese Prime minister vows to resign if parliament raises teachers' salaries

Portugal faces a political crisis after the Socialist prime minister said his minority government would resign if leftwing allies and centre-right opponents gave final approval in parliament to a controversial pay deal for teachers that they have already backed at the committee stage.

In a televised address to the nation on Friday, António Costa denounced the measure as “financially unsustainable” and “socially unjust”, saying its approval would “compromise Portugal’s international credibility” and demolish the government’s commitment to balance the reversal of austerity measures with fiscal prudence.

The conflict threatens to end the alliance between Mr Costa’s centre-left Socialists and the far-left parties that have provided his minority administration with a working majority in parliament. It could also lead to an early general election ahead of the poll currently scheduled for October.

Mr Costa came to power in November 2015, vowing to “turn the page on austerity” with parliamentary support from the radical Left Bloc (BE) and hardline Communists. But on Thursday, the two leftwing parties joined forces with the centre-right opposition to approve a second reading of proposals for a teacher’s pay deal that the government opposes.

After an emergency cabinet meeting on Friday, Mr Costa said final approval of the bill, expected to be voted on in mid-May, would place “inadmissible” conditions on his government and future administrations that “only voters have the legitimacy to decide on”.

The conflict highlights the difficulties the government faces in setting limits to its own popular pledge to reverse austerity while upholding recent successes in balancing the budget.

Under Mr Costa, the budget deficit has fallen to its lowest level in 45 years of democracy and is projected to move into surplus next year.

Mr Costa said approval of the bill meant a similar pay deal would have to be extended to other public employees, including the military and police, at a cost of €800m a year.
