Fans party into the night as Liverpool reach Champions League final

Football fans from across the globe reacted in shock and disbelief as Liverpool completed one of football's greatest ever comebacks to beat Barcelona and reach the Champions League final.

The English club launched an incredible four-goal fight back to stun one of the world's best teams and overturn what many believed to be an insurmountable 3-0 deficit from the first leg in Spain.

As the final whistle blew, some of Liverpool's heroes dropped to their knees in disbelief while others were seen crying on the pitch, as Anfield's 55,000-strong crowd of adoring fans erupted with joy.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher led the tributes as exclaimed last night the 'greatest ever' in the history of the iconic ground, with the win even receiving a royal seal of approval from the Duke of Cambridge.

Prince William, the serving President of the FA and Aston Villa fan, tweeted 'an incredible result, what a comeback' which was followed by praise from sporting royalty in the form of basketball great LeBron James, who added: 'Amazing night for the Reds. Wow.'

The moment got the better of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who turned the air blue after the game when he said: 'It's 10:10pm, most children are in bed, but these boys are f****** mentality giants. If you have to fine me, fine me!'

While fans in the stadium shouted themselves hoarse, others took to social media to express their joy.

One fan, writing on Twitter, said: 'Liverpool doing things that cannot be done!'

Another said: 'If Liverpool see this out, it will be the greatest comeback since Lazarus.'

A third said: 'Never, ever count Liverpool out, I won't tell you again.'

Photos and videos posted online showed fans celebrating wildly in pubs, bars and the streets of Liverpool.

Tonto Dikeh has the right not to cover Churchill up - Stephanie Otobo

Daddy Freeze has shared a video on his youtube page saying Tonto Dikeh’s son will not be affected by the actress' constant call out of her estranged husband. Freeze shared the link on instagram asking people to go watch and Stephanie Otobo, who got famous by allegedly saying she slept with Apostle Suleman and he kept pumping money into her account, says a parent should be called out the exact way he/she is.

Freeze shared the link with the caption;

''Brand new video alert, since we have embraced modernization, we have stop cherry picking and embrace all that comes with it. Those saying her son will be affected by her speaking out are only clowning around, afraid to let go, despite the world’s visible evolution.

They are, as a result of a flawed moral compass, creating forlornly, a deluded make believe world, as an odd in between compromise, between their reality and their delusions. In the actuality of the new world we are all creating, she’ll be a hero, so deal with it! ~FRZ''

While Otobo commented saying;

''Tonto should never conform to the warped African mentality of making children believe a parent is good when they are actually not. Bare the truth please.''

Presidency denies offering N100bn to Miyetti Allah

The presidency has denied offering N100 billion naira to the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity debunked claims that the amount was seen to appease the association over the reported killing by some herdsmen.

“That is an absolute falsehood. In all of those meetings, nothing like money was discussed,” he said when asked if the Federal Government offered the sum to the association.

The presidential spokesman explained that the meeting was for the leadership of the group to prevail on its erring members.

According to Shehu, the existence of some miscreants in a group does not entirely mean the entire members of the association are criminals.

He noted that Miyetti Allah is a cultural group just like the Afenifere associated with the Yorubas and the Ohaneze Ndigbo of the southeast.

“The Miyetti Allah group is like Ohanaeze Ndigbo or the Afenifere. It’s just a cultural group.

“There are criminals with the Yoruba race and you cannot say because there are Yoruba criminals, then Afenifere is a band of criminals,” he stated.

Photo: suspected serial fraudster lands in EFCC’s net

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested an alleged serial cash transfer fraudster, Bashar Abdullahi, (a.k.a.  Abdu Abdullahi and Bashir Abdullahi) who defrauded some unsuspecting victims of N151,000 at the ATM galleries.

One of the petitioners, Tukur Achida, alleged that on March 16, 2019, he went to a Zenith Bank ATM point along Abdullahi Fodio Road, Sokoto, to withdraw money from his account, where he met the suspect who  he asked for assistance.

He alleged that on reaching his home, he realised that Abdullahi had transferred N20, 000 out of his Zenith Bank account to his own account.

During the course of investigation, two other complaints were received by the EFCC against the same suspect.

One Sada Abubakar also reported to the Commission that on Sunday, April 28, 2019, he went to Polaris Bank ATM point at Dogon Daji House, Sokoto, for  some transactions.

Unable to operate the machine, he was allegedly approached by Abdullahi who offered to assist him.

He alleged that he gave him his ATM card and other information, including the details of the account to which he wanted to transfer the money to.

Abubakar said that to his surprise, Abdullahi had fraudulently transferred the sum of N50, 000 to a Jaiz bank account in the name of Bashar Abdullahi.

Upon the receipt of the complaint, the  Commission spokesman, Tony Orilade, said EFCC detectives despatched an investigator to Jaiz Bank, who laid in wait for the suspect.

Orilade said in a statement, “However, it happened that one Tukur Ibrahim, another victim of Abdullahi showed up in the bank, complaining to the bank officials that on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 he went to the ATM point to make withdrawals and that someone borrowed his mobile phone on the ground that he wanted to use its calculator.

“Ibrahim soon found out that the person had made away with his phone and later realised that N81, 000 had been transferred from his account using his missing mobile phone.

“When the bank officials investigated the transaction, it was discovered that the amount was transferred by the same Abdullahi to his own account.”

Investigations revealed that there were several other ATM transfers into  Abdullahi’s account from different victims.

The anti-graft agency said Abdullahi while confessing to the crimes, revealed that his modus operandi was to loiter around ATM points and take advantage of people.

The commission explained that the suspect would soon be charged to court.

Mob sets man ablaze for stealing from church

A yet-to-be-identified man has been set ablaze for allegedly burgling a branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in the Somolu area of Lagos.

It was gathered that the suspect was among a three-man gang which burgled the church on Olorunkemi Street, Bariga.

Punch Metro learnt that the gang members were making away with the stolen items when they were challenged by some members of the community.

While two of the robbers escaped, the mob caught up with the third suspect and set him ablaze.

A resident, Ibrahim Olasunkanmi, said he had just returned from the mosque when he heard people raise the alarm in the early hours of Saturday.

He said, “I just got back from the mosque and was about to go to bed around 5.30am when I heard a noise from a distance. Out of curiosity, I went to the scene and saw someone being set ablaze.

“I later learnt that he was a member of a three-man gang which had gone to steal some musical instruments from an RCCG church on Olorunkemi Street, and while they were carting away the items, some guys ran after them. Two of them ran away, while the third suspect withstood the mob because he probably had a charm on him. At first, people were afraid to get close to him. When they eventually caught him, they descended on him. Before the police and the Lagos State Ambulance Service arrived, he had been set ablaze.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect was still alive and recovering in a hospital.

He noted that the suspect had yet to give any information to the police.

Absence of prosecution stalls Dino Melaye‘s trial

The trial of the Sen. Dino Melaye in an FCT High Court , Maitama was on Tuesday stalled due to the absence of the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Shuaibu Labaran.

Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, is charged with two counts bordering on giving false information to the police.

The Federal Government arraigned Melaye, alleging that he, sometime in April, 2017 deliberately gave false information to the police.

At the resumed sitting, Mr Abubakar Mustapha who held brief for Labaran, told the court that the matter was for cross-examination of prosecution witness.

He however pleaded with the court, saying the matter cannot proceed as there was a communication gap between him and the lead counsel, Labaran who was absent.

He also informed the court of the prosecution witness was also not in court and that he was supposed to be cross-examined today by the defence counsel.

He, therefore, prayed the court for an adjournment.

The defence counsel, Mr Olusegun Jolaawo, opposed the application for adjournment and told the court that “On Jan. 18, this matter came up with the same excuse.

“The reason why the matter could not go on that day was that the same witness was absent in court and no tenable reason was given this is the second time on record as a witness who is in the box is absent from court.

“The witness has an obligation to make himself available on every adjourned date, whether court sits or not until your lordship orders his discharge ,We could not carry out cross-examination majorly because he is absent from court” he said.

Mr Jolaawo reminded the court that “Section 215 of the Evidence Act further clarifies on the issue of the order and direction of examination, by the following subsections:

According to Mr Jolaawo, this section of Evidence Act gives them the right to cross-examine a witness.

The judge, Justice Olasumbo Goodluck, after listening to Jolaawo’s submission adjourned until July 3, July 4 and July 10.

Goodluck warned that this would be the last time she would be adjourning the matter.

NANS gives Akeredolu 24 hours ultimatum to revise school fees

The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) on Tuesday gave Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, 24 hours ultimatum to revise the school fees of four state higher institutions to the initial fees.

The four higher institutions are Adekunle Ajasi University, Akungba (AAUA), Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa (OSUSTECH);  Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo and Ondo State School of Nursing, Akure.

Mr Danielson Akpan Bamidele, President of NANS, made the calls while speaking with the newsmen in Akure.

Bamidele, who said that NANS had come to take its responsibilities and future in its hands, alleged that some state governments had introduced new policies to enhance education in their various states but Gov. Akeredolu was not doing same.

According to him, we have come to a point where, we will not allow any government to run the affairs of any state especially the part of it that affects us directly in the manner that pleases them.

He said that decisions on policy should affect the people positively, “Since the return of democracy in 1999, Ondo State Government had made free education available for all from primary to secondary level.

“Adefarati came and initiated that policy, Agagu came to sustain it, Mimiko spent two terms he consolidated it, so Akeredolu should not only sustain it but improve on it.

“AAUA school fees was N63, 000 initially but the state government increased it to N200, 000 before it was later reduced to N180, 000 with a promise to revise it to normal in the next session.

“Also OSUSTECH was N70, 000 and increased to N200, 000, School of Nursing, Akure and Rufus Giwa Polytechnic fees were increased too.

“WAEC, which used to be paid for by the state government, has been stopped without apology to anyone.

“Gov. Akeredolu should please help our students, who do not have hope to be educated as a matter of urgency, he should revise all the school fees of the state’s higher institutions to the initial fees.

“We are giving him 24 hours ultimatum to do that because we are not ready to fight him but to yield to the yearnings of the students and their parents.

“Ondo State was known for producing the best of the best when it comes to education in this country and it is also known as the bedrock of education in the country,” he said.

He, therefore, called on parents and guardians to join hands with the association to fight the course on behalf of the students.

US court jails Nigerian 15 years over $10m fraud

A Federal High Court in, Houston, Texas, in the United States of America (USA) has sentenced a Nigerian, Hammed Akinola, to 180 months (15 years) imprisonment for a $10million fraud.

U.S. District Judge David Hittner also sentenced Akinola’s accomplice, a 53-year-old American, James Campbell, to 90 months in prison.

According to a press release by the US Justice Department, the judge handed the sentence on April 12, after both men pleaded guilty.

They were found to have taken or attempted to take large sums of money from roughly 45 victims, who thought they were sending their money to a title company to close on a home.

Unknown to them, the money was fraudulently being transferred to a bank in Houston controlled by the defendants.

Judge Hittner noted that the defendants “ruined many Americans’ lives”, while the banks took a large hit as well.

Both have been and will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted the investigation.

From on or about January 2016 through November 2017, Campbell and Akinola were involved in an international wire fraud conspiracy that consisted primarily of Business Email Compromise (BEC) fraud which targeted businesses and individuals that regularly perform wire transfer payments.

They compromised legitimate business e-mail accounts through social engineering or computer intrusion techniques to conduct unauthorized transfers of funds by international co-conspirators.

The international co-conspirators hacked into the victims accounts and sent what appeared to the victims to be legitimate emails from banks or title companies.

The victims, tricked into thinking such emails were from the bank or title companies, would then transfer the money to the accounts the defendants controlled, not knowing they were fraudulent emails.

Akinola was working with overseas conspirators who were orchestrating the BEC victimization.

Those conspirators needed domestic bank accounts where they could send the funds stolen from the BEC fraud.

Akinola and Campbell agreed to work together to open bank accounts and to recruit individuals in and around the Houston area to open bank accounts in order to receive the BEC wires.

Campbell and Akinola then recruited 20 other individuals who did open bank accounts to receive fraudulent funds.

The proceeds of the fraud scheme were disbursed between the account holders, Campbell, Akinola and international accomplices.

In total, the Campbell and Akinola’s activity participating in the scheme and laundering its proceeds resulted in victims’ of BEC fraud transferring or attempting to transfer $10.3 million into to accounts they controlled.

Photo: Nigerian woman collapses as court sentences her to death for killing neighbour in Ajegunle

An Ikeja High Court on Tuesday sentenced a 36-year-old woman, Stella Gilbert, to death for stabbing her neighbour, Mrs Stella Godwin, to death during a fight at their residence in Ajegunle, Lagos.

The fight was over a bench in the premises of their single room apartments also known as ‘face’me-I-face you’.

The fight was caused by an argument over who should be using the bench belonging to their former neighbour.

Justice Raliatu Adebiyi sentenced Gilbert after dismissing her claim of self-defence.

The judge held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

“The defendant in this case used a knife on the deceased; by any standard, a knife is a lethal weapon.

”The evidence of PW2 (Prosecution Witness 2), the cousin of PW1 (the deceased’s husband), and that of PW3, the female police officer, was that the deceased was stabbed on the chest.

“The coroner’s report tendered in evidence by PW4 confirmed that the deceased was stabbed on the chest.

“The chest is where the heart is; the defendant, by stabbing the deceased on the chest, a very fragile part of the body, clearly intended to cause the most harm to her.

“The death of the deceased occurred as a result of grievous injury caused by the defendant. The defendant is culpable of the offence of murder,” she said.

Following the conviction of the Gilbert, her counsel, Mr Y. E. Yusuf, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.

“The defendant has been in detention for six years; during that time, she lost both parents and her brother. She is in her late 30s and unmarried, she has gone through a lot.

“She was not harbouring the intent to murder when the incident occurred.

“I want my lord to temper justice with mercy and refrain from giving the defendant the maximum sentence,” Yusuf urged.

However, the judge passed death sentence on Gilbert.

“The defendant, Stella Gilbert, is hereby sentenced to death. May God that grants life have mercy on your soul,” she said.

Kano government moves to remove Emir Sanusi again?

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has summoned top Kano emirate member to appear before it over alleged financial misappropriation, multiple news outlets reports.

A letter signed by the commission’s Director of Operations, CSP Sulaiman Aliyu Gusau, invited an aide to the Emir, Alhaji Isa Bayero for investigation.

The letter, written on behalf of Executive Chairman, Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, may signal fresh corruption charges against Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, The Guardian reports.

“Pursuant to provision of section 31(1) (a) and (b) of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Law 2008 (as amended) requested release of the officer to explain payment vouchers from 2013 to 2017.

“It directed Isa. S. Bayero to be at the commission conference room by 12.00noon on Thursday, May 9, over an investigation on alleged violation of section 26 of the commission’s enabling Law in the management of Kano State Emirate Council Fund,” the letter reads.

The commission had in 2018 commenced large-scale probe against Emir Sanusi before the state House of Assembly intervened, which forced the commission to stay action on the matter.

Investigation by the Assembly later took another twist when the House leadership allegedly received gratification to dismiss all allegations against the Emir.
