Alleged fraud: Court sends pastor to prison

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja yesterday ordered that a cleric, Pastor Dennis Ogbede, be remanded in prison custody.

Justice Modupe Osho-Adebiyi gave the order shortly after Ogbede was arraigned on a three-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Osho-Adebiyi ordered that Ogbede be kept in prison until he meets the conditions attached to the bail granted him.

Ogbede, the director of Alidenco Systems Nigeria Ltd, was arraigned for allegedly defrauding Maje Umar Nafiu of Maje Investment and Construction Company Ltd to the tune of N35million in land acquisition in 2009.

The EFCC also accused the defendant of presenting to Nafiu, fake land titles for Wumba area of the FCT.

The commission alleged that Ogbede agreed to refund N25million through three post-dated Zenith Bank Plc cheques, which all failed to clear upon presentation at the bank in December, 2015.

The offences violate Section 1(1) of Dud Cheque Offences Act and punishable under section (i) (i) of the same Act.

Ogbede pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.

After Ogbede’s arraignment, prosecution lawyer, Samuel Ugwuegbulem, sought a date for the commencement of trial.

Defence lawyer Isaac Imo applied for bail for the defendant.

Imo said the defendant is a religious leader and also has a pending civil suit in court, challenging the refund of the N35million.

Ugwuegbulem said he would not oppose the bail application, because it was the discretion of the court to grant bail.

Ruling, Justice Osho-Adebiyi granted bail to the defendant at N2million and two sureties in the like sum.

The judge said the sureties must be civil servants, one which must be of the rank not less than Grade Level 14, with landed properties in the FCT.

She adjourned till May 30 for trial.

EFCC arraigns ex-bank manager for N187m fraud

The Enugu Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday arraigned a former acting branch manager of a new generation bank, Oliver Anidiobi, before Justice C. O. Ajah of the state’s High Court, sitting in Enugu, for alleged N187 million fraud.

Anidiobi, who was also the Account Relationship Officer of a microfinance bank, is facing a 32-count charge bordering on forgery and stealing from the microfinance bank.

The commission said its investigations revealed that the banker used his position to convince the microfinance bank to deposit the amount with him with an accompanying letter of instruction (which he acknowledged) to the new generation bank.

He was said to have fixed the amount on behalf of the microfinance bank and allegedly forged a ‘Fixed Deposit Certificate’ as evidence of their investment.

Anidiobi, upon receipt of several instalments of the money totalling N187 million, allegedly diverted the money to his personal use to build a two-storey building of five flats, buy several plots of land on Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway and an uncompleted four-bedroom bungalow at Centenary Estate, Enugu.

He was also said to have made an investment of over N65 million from the money.

His journey to the dock began when the microfinance bank decided to liquidate their two fixed deposits and discovered that there was no record of the transactions in the system.

One of the counts against him reads: “Anidiobi Oliver Chukwuka, sometime between August 15, 014 and August 28, 2014 in Enugu, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did commit a felony to wit: stealing by fraudulently converting to your personal use the aggregate sum of N5 million only, being property of a microfinance bank and thereby committed an offence.”

He pleaded “not guilty” to the charges. Justice Ajah adjourned the matter till June 7 for hearing of the bail application and ordered that Anidiobi should be remanded in prison.

Youths to El-Rufai: Don’t disgrace yourself

The Yoruba Council of Youths Worldwide has warned Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai to desist from acts that could earn him disgrace from the Yoruba nation

Addressing reporters in Lagos, the council’s president, Aremo Oladotun Hassan, said the statement credited to el-Rufai saying he would teach Lagosians how to end Godfatherism was “abysmally insulting”.

Hassan queried why the governor would leave his Kaduna State, which is under intense insecurity and fears.

He said el-Rufai lacked the credibility to utter such seditious statement in a Yoruba land.

The youth leader wondered how someone, who ought to focus on how to end insecurity and abject poverty ravaging his state and region,  would “come to the megacity, the Centre of Excellence and the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria and Africa’s emerging economic hub to claim he wants to end Godfatherism”.

Hassan said: “Even as he claimed that he had ended Godfatherism in Kaduna, we are yet to see the benefits of his political victory in the lives of the people of Kaduna and the development of the state, unlike Lagos where our progressive leader of leaders has great successes to show.

“Our so-called ‘Godfatherism’ system helped in sustaining the struggle against opposition in Nigeria and led to the building of the strong political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), that made it possible for the enthronement of President Muhammadu Buhari, which also helped the same el-Rufai become the Kaduna State Governor.

“Our so-called ‘Godfatherism’ helped sustain Lagos as the commercial hub of Nigeria and the fifth largest economy in Africa.

The youth leader said his members would reject any attempt by any individual, no matter how highly placed, to intrude or disrespect political leaders in the Southwest.

He added: “Governor el-Rufai is renowned for being too overzealous for power. He is a harbinger of crises. Hence, his previous contemptuous stands on issues of national development, being override with his penchant for ethnic bigotry and indiscriminate devaluation of humanity. We condemned his crocodile tears in its entirety.

“Nigerians still kept fresh in their memories the hate speech and treasonable felonious statements credited to Governor el-Rufai on threats of mass genocide and killings in body bags he issued to international observers during the last 2019 election, a repetition of what is happening in Southern Kaduna, which almost caused the nation a huge embarrassment and a disaster, if not for our intervention as future heirs of Nigeria.

“Going back to memory lane, we cannot forget in a hurry the double jeopardy situation, where some traitors in Yoruba land collaborated with some hegemonic structures to betray the late sage of great memory, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and we will never allow history to repeat itself.”

2019 Met Gala raises $15million for charity

According to a representative for The Metropolitan Museum of Art, they were able to raise $15 million in just one night. The Met Gala is held annually as a way to help fund their yearly exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and capital improvements.

This year’s theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” Its theme was to particularly draw emphasis on sexuality, and society’s perception of it. It was inspired by an essay that Susan Sontag wrote in 1964.

And as usual, celebrities covered every inch of the red carpet– some adhering to the theme, while other’s just merely showed up. Lady Gaga was one of the people who showed up and stopped the show. She had several wardrobe changes. But perhaps she just wanted to set the standard for someone co-chairing the event. Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, and Anna Wintour were all helping to co-chair Monday night’s event.

EFCC’s investigation into my tenure as Kwara governor is simply 'fighting a political enemy' – Saraki

The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has described as mere witch-hunt the investigations commenced by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the various institutions where he had served or presently serving.

The Senate president said this yesterday in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu.

Saraki was responding to EFCC’s reaction to a report that the anti-graft agency had written a letter to the Kwara State Government demanding for all details of salaries, allowances, estacode or any other entitlement enjoyed by Saraki during his tenure as governor of the state between 2003 and 2011.

Saraki argued that the exercise by the EFCC was only aimed at settling scores, laced with malicious and partisan motives.

The EFCC in the report had claimed that, “the commission’s letter to the Kwara State Government House, which sought an inquest into Saraki’s earnings as the state governor, from 2003 to 2011 was dated Friday, April 26, 2019, predating his (Saraki) announcement as IHRC ambassador at large which came on Sunday, April 28, 2019 with two clear days.”

But Saraki in the statement pointed out that the “IHRC letter informing the Senate President of his appointment was dated March 16, 2019, that is about 40 days before the EFCC wrote its letter conveying the investigations to the Kwara State Government House.

“In fact, the media team of the Senate president held on to the announcement of the appointment for several weeks so that we could do due diligence on it.

“At this point, we need to remind members of the public that Dr. Saraki’s tenure as Kwara State Governor has been investigated several times since his last months in office in 2010 till date.

“In fact, at a point, as incumbent governor, he voluntarily waived his immunity and submitted to investigation and yet nothing was found against him. Also, members of the public should be reminded that during the proceedings of his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) between 2015 and 2018, it became clear that the evidence relied upon was from investigations conducted by the EFCC on his tenure as governor and that is why the lead witness for the prosecution was an EFCC agent, Michael Wetkas.

“Yet, the CCT in its judgment dismissed the 16 charges filed against Dr. Saraki and that verdict was upheld by the highest court of the land, the Supreme Court,” the statement explained.

Saraki insisted that the new investigation into his activities as governor of Kwara State was a repeat performance, adding that the EFCC was fishing for evidence that they did not get in the past investigations, which spanned almost nine years.

He reminded the commission that he is not an outgoing governor, adding that since 2011, tens of governors have been in and out of the various state houses, likewise, hundreds of Senators and members of House of Representatives.

“To single out one individual for persistent investigation can only be logically and plausibly interpreted to be a witch-hunt.

“This is definitely no fight against corruption. It is a battle waged against a ‘political enemy’. It is a ‘label to damage’ plot,” the statement argued.

School shooting in Colorado, US leaves 1 student dead and 8 injured

Last month, as the 20th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting approached, STEM School Highlands Ranch joined hundreds of schools near Denver in closing temporarily amid security concerns. The anniversary came and went, and schools returned to their routines.

But on Tuesday afternoon, the STEM school’s worst fears were realized when nine of its students were shot, one fatally, and two fellow students were being held as suspects.

“We know two individuals walked into the STEM school, got deep inside the school and engaged students in two separate locations,” Sheriff Tony Spurlock of Douglas County said at a news conference.

At 6:45 p.m., about five hours after the shooting, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office released a statement confirming that one of the nine who had been shot, an 18-year-old man, had died

Toor! Anglican Church in Abia expels two priests over homosexuality

The Arochukwu/Ohafia Diocese of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) in Abia State has dismissed two priests for indulging in homosexuality.

A letter entitled: “Notice of dismissal from ministry”, dated April 29, 2019, and signed by Bishop of the Diocese, The Rt. Rev. Johnson Onuoha, circulated to all archbishops and bishops of the church said an investigation by the diocese, after it got wind of the allegation, confirmed that the two men were neck-deep in the act.

The memorandum which was also copied to the Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria and Bishop of Abuja, The Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh, warned any persons dealing with the expelled clerics to be mindful as such could dent the image of the church.

The letter read in part: “We wish to inform you that the following clergy have been dismissed from the diocese of Arochukwu/Ohafia. They are Rev. Chukwuemeka Duru and Rev. Solomon Chukwuzubelu Okonkwo.

“The report got to us that they were indulged in the act of homosexuality. We investigated and found them guilty of such accusation. We were left with no option than to withdraw their letters of order (licences and certificates of ordination) and dismissed them from the ministry.

“Therefore, anyone dealing with these persons should tread with care as such can drag the image of the church to the mud.”

When Sunday Sun called the Cathedral of All Saints Ugwuavo, Arochukwu on telephone, yesterday, a secretariat staff who wished not to be mentioned confirmed the incident.

“Yes. We heard such thing, investigated and confirmed it. So, we showed them the way out. It’s not actually supposed to come from me, but the bishop. What you heard is true; there’s something like that,” he said.

Woman slammed online for wearing a white fish tail dress to her son's wedding

A woman has been slammed in a wedding shaming group for wearing a white floor-length gown to her son's wedding.

The controversial dress was worn to a wedding by the mother-of-the-groom, and was posted to a wedding shaming group on Facebook, by a woman called Abbie from Wisconsin.

She had received a picture of the offending dress from a friend, whose name she didn't reveal, captioned: 'This is my husband's aunt at her son's wedding. Lady, TF are you doing?'.

Shared in a wedding shaming group, photos of the dress were slated as people couldn't believe the woman had chosen to wear not only a white dress, but one that looked so similar in style to the dress worn by her son's wife on the special day.

The pictures were shared into the private group by a user who wrote: 'You guys, this is my husband's aunt at her son's wedding. Lady, TF are you doing?!'

Images of the dress show that is it a strapless white, floor-length dress with a fish-tail.

The Facebook user posted two photos of the mother and a photograph of the bride, posing with friends and family, to show the resemblance between the two dresses.

Since the post was shared in the group it has gathered some attention.

Many members of the group have slammed the woman for wearing the dress.

One user said: 'How f*****g unhinged do you have to be to dress like a bride at your SON'S wedding?'

Another said: 'I'd have "accidentally" spilt my wine on her and mashed cake into her dress. Sorry sis. You're rainbow now.'

'What a pathetic attention seeker,' added another.

Others said that the woman looked good in the dress, however, they insisted it simply wasn't appropriate to wear to a wedding.

One user wrote: 'She wore the same silhouette as the bride too. Mess.

'She's hot and could literally have worn anything else,' they added.

Another user of a similar opinion said: 'Well... if I looked that good, I probably would too.'

Similarly, another member of the group said: 'I honestly might consider not kicking her out if this happened to me just because [of her] sheer bravery of this bold, bold move.'

Outrage as South African singer, Babes Wodumo returns to abusive boyfriend

South African artist Babes Wodumo has broken her silence following outrage after she dropped a song and video called "Khona iy'ngane kayndlini".

Last week DJ Tira dropped the surprise video and song featuring Wodumo and Mampintsha (her boyfriend who allegedly assaulted her in a live instagram video) with the song title being taken from a line said by Mampintsha in the assault video.

Tweeps voiced their opinion of the duos reunion with many fans unhappy about Wodumo using a line from the assault video for a new song.

In an Instagram post where the "Wololo" singer is promoting an upcoming show, one of her followers commented on the picture saying: "In a country and world with such a high rate of Gender Based Violence you are using your platform as a disservice to all the young womxn & elder victims of abuse.

As a public figure you have the responsibility as a role model. You are doing no justice to the calls you sent out earlier this year - calls many responded to and were triggered by. What you have done is confusing and mocks many people who supported you as a survivor of abuse.(sic)"

Wodumo replied in Zulu with: "ey sis naka izindaba zakho... uphume ezindabeni zabant ababili..." which roughly translates to the "Shut Up and Groove" star telling her fan to mind her own business and leave her alone.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry To unveil their baby to the world TODAY

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have insisted on a US broadcaster being present when they unveil their baby son to the world today – and have picked the channel fronted by one of Meghan’s best friends.

The couple have arranged for CBS, the network whose morning show is fronted by the duchess’s confidante Gayle King – a guest at her New York baby shower – to join a small British media contingent for the photocall at Windsor Castle.

The decision came as a surprise to British television channels including the BBC and ITV – not to mention many at Buckingham Palace.

It comes as royal fans wait for their first glimpse of the newborn in a photo shoot due to take place on Wednesday.

A source said last night the arrangements were made to ‘reflect the international interest in the story’.

But British broadcasters are said to be furious at the move and there is also concern among some in the royal household that the decision will look like a ‘slap in the face’ to Commonwealth broadcasters, particularly in countries such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand, where the Queen is still head of state.

It’s a decision that has taken everyone by surprise and has not gone down well in some quarters,’ one source said.

Tonto Dikeh has the right not to cover Churchill up - Stephanie Otobo

Daddy Freeze has shared a video on his youtube page saying Tonto Dikeh’s son will not be affected by the actress' constant call out of her estranged husband. Freeze shared the link on instagram asking people to go watch and Stephanie Otobo, who got famous by allegedly saying she slept with Apostle Suleman and he kept pumping money into her account, says a parent should be called out the exact way he/she is.

Freeze shared the link with the caption;

''Brand new video alert, since we have embraced modernization, we have stop cherry picking and embrace all that comes with it. Those saying her son will be affected by her speaking out are only clowning around, afraid to let go, despite the world’s visible evolution.

They are, as a result of a flawed moral compass, creating forlornly, a deluded make believe world, as an odd in between compromise, between their reality and their delusions. In the actuality of the new world we are all creating, she’ll be a hero, so deal with it! ~FRZ''

While Otobo commented saying;

''Tonto should never conform to the warped African mentality of making children believe a parent is good when they are actually not. Bare the truth please.''

Presidency denies offering N100bn to Miyetti Allah

The presidency has denied offering N100 billion naira to the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity debunked claims that the amount was seen to appease the association over the reported killing by some herdsmen.

“That is an absolute falsehood. In all of those meetings, nothing like money was discussed,” he said when asked if the Federal Government offered the sum to the association.

The presidential spokesman explained that the meeting was for the leadership of the group to prevail on its erring members.

According to Shehu, the existence of some miscreants in a group does not entirely mean the entire members of the association are criminals.

He noted that Miyetti Allah is a cultural group just like the Afenifere associated with the Yorubas and the Ohaneze Ndigbo of the southeast.

“The Miyetti Allah group is like Ohanaeze Ndigbo or the Afenifere. It’s just a cultural group.

“There are criminals with the Yoruba race and you cannot say because there are Yoruba criminals, then Afenifere is a band of criminals,” he stated.

Photo: suspected serial fraudster lands in EFCC’s net

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested an alleged serial cash transfer fraudster, Bashar Abdullahi, (a.k.a.  Abdu Abdullahi and Bashir Abdullahi) who defrauded some unsuspecting victims of N151,000 at the ATM galleries.

One of the petitioners, Tukur Achida, alleged that on March 16, 2019, he went to a Zenith Bank ATM point along Abdullahi Fodio Road, Sokoto, to withdraw money from his account, where he met the suspect who  he asked for assistance.

He alleged that on reaching his home, he realised that Abdullahi had transferred N20, 000 out of his Zenith Bank account to his own account.

During the course of investigation, two other complaints were received by the EFCC against the same suspect.

One Sada Abubakar also reported to the Commission that on Sunday, April 28, 2019, he went to Polaris Bank ATM point at Dogon Daji House, Sokoto, for  some transactions.

Unable to operate the machine, he was allegedly approached by Abdullahi who offered to assist him.

He alleged that he gave him his ATM card and other information, including the details of the account to which he wanted to transfer the money to.

Abubakar said that to his surprise, Abdullahi had fraudulently transferred the sum of N50, 000 to a Jaiz bank account in the name of Bashar Abdullahi.

Upon the receipt of the complaint, the  Commission spokesman, Tony Orilade, said EFCC detectives despatched an investigator to Jaiz Bank, who laid in wait for the suspect.

Orilade said in a statement, “However, it happened that one Tukur Ibrahim, another victim of Abdullahi showed up in the bank, complaining to the bank officials that on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 he went to the ATM point to make withdrawals and that someone borrowed his mobile phone on the ground that he wanted to use its calculator.

“Ibrahim soon found out that the person had made away with his phone and later realised that N81, 000 had been transferred from his account using his missing mobile phone.

“When the bank officials investigated the transaction, it was discovered that the amount was transferred by the same Abdullahi to his own account.”

Investigations revealed that there were several other ATM transfers into  Abdullahi’s account from different victims.

The anti-graft agency said Abdullahi while confessing to the crimes, revealed that his modus operandi was to loiter around ATM points and take advantage of people.

The commission explained that the suspect would soon be charged to court.

Mob sets man ablaze for stealing from church

A yet-to-be-identified man has been set ablaze for allegedly burgling a branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in the Somolu area of Lagos.

It was gathered that the suspect was among a three-man gang which burgled the church on Olorunkemi Street, Bariga.

Punch Metro learnt that the gang members were making away with the stolen items when they were challenged by some members of the community.

While two of the robbers escaped, the mob caught up with the third suspect and set him ablaze.

A resident, Ibrahim Olasunkanmi, said he had just returned from the mosque when he heard people raise the alarm in the early hours of Saturday.

He said, “I just got back from the mosque and was about to go to bed around 5.30am when I heard a noise from a distance. Out of curiosity, I went to the scene and saw someone being set ablaze.

“I later learnt that he was a member of a three-man gang which had gone to steal some musical instruments from an RCCG church on Olorunkemi Street, and while they were carting away the items, some guys ran after them. Two of them ran away, while the third suspect withstood the mob because he probably had a charm on him. At first, people were afraid to get close to him. When they eventually caught him, they descended on him. Before the police and the Lagos State Ambulance Service arrived, he had been set ablaze.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect was still alive and recovering in a hospital.

He noted that the suspect had yet to give any information to the police.
