Bill proposing establishment of Maritime University of Nigeria rejected by Senate

The Senate on Thursday rejected a bill proposing the establishment of Maritime University of Nigeria, Lokoja in Kogi.

The rejection followed presentation of the bill by the sponsor, Sen. Isaac Alfa (PDP-Kogi).

The bill, which was listed for second reading, was rejected by the lawmakers through voice vote.

While making their contributions, the lawmakers had advised the sponsor of the bill to withdraw it following several reasons including the need for more work to be done.

Alfa however, refused to withdraw the bill, saying he had done a lot of work on it.

He urged the lawmakers not to attach geographical location and other sentiments to the bill.

Sen Barau Jibrin (Kano North) noted that there was a new federal university in Lokoja while suggesting that the proposed maritime university should be sited in another riverine community of the same state.

Sen. Olusola Adeyeye (APC-Osun), said there was no need for the university, adding that universities across the country were poorly funded.

“You create universities and get under funding. I will continue to oppose every new university until old ones are funded.

“Let the universities in the maritime areas create maritime faculties. We should not embark on 419 for our children until old ones are funded,” Adeyeye said.

Sen. Biodun Olujimi (PDP-Ekiti), said the sponsor of the bill should withdraw it for more work.

In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, put it to a voice vote and the nays had it.

Kenya hospital employees charged with death of 7-month old baby (photo)

Three employees of Shalom Hospital, Kenya were today arraigned in court over the death of a seven-month-old baby at the facility on Sunday.

The three are Vincent Njau Nganga, Irene Katete Mutinda, and Odhiambo Kennedy.

Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Irene Kahuya, the three suspects were charged with manslaughter, recklessness and handling poisonous medicine without the laid out procedures.

The accused persons have pleaded not guilty to the charges and have been released on Sh500,000 bond plus a surety with a similar amount.

Baby Ethan Muendo died after he was reportedly injected with a dose of morphine that was 20 times more than the required amount.

His death led to the shutdown of the scandal-ridden health facility. The hospital was in the spot a few weeks ago after a woman allegedly gave birth on the floor as nurses watched and enjoyed their tea.

Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB) Chairman Fredrick Were said the baby was supposed to be given the drug orally and not through a jab.

“The child went drowsy, went home sleepy and was brought back still very sleepy and in that process of time the child was lost,” said Prof. Were.

The child had been taken to the hospital after scalding his hand with hot water from a dispenser.

People now have less s-x than ever because of Netflix, phones & social media! Study in UK proves

The dawn of the internet promised a new age where finding a s-xual partner was just the click of a mouse away.

But rather than improving their romantic lives, new technology has left Britons having less s-x than ever before.

A major study found there has been a steep decline in rates of intimacy since 2001, with fewer than half of Britons now having s-x once a week.

Scientists said that 'life in the digital age' was partly to blame - with couples now too distracted by Netflix, social media or their phones to focus on each other.

Researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine analysed data from 34,000 men and women aged 16 to 44 who completed a survey about their s-x lives in 1991, 2001 and 2012.

The study, published in the British Medical Journal, said the decline was due to 'the sheer pace of modern life' and that middle-aged couples juggling childcare and work were the worst affected.

It added that rising gender equality had 'extended to the s-xual sphere', meaning women 'feel less obliged to meet their partner's s-xual needs irrespective of their own'.

Drama at funeral parlor as 4 Kenyan women fight over body of man

Drama ensued in Kirinyaga, Kenya on Wednesday afternoon after four women turned out at a funeral parlor to claim the body of a deceased man.

Each of the four women claimed to be the wife of 32-year-old Peter Mwangi Gichobi, a boda-boda operator who passed away on April 28th in a road crash along Nyangati-Embu road.

Things turned chaotic after the four failed to agree who among them would receive a burial permit for the deceased.

Three of the women have been identified as Janet Wambui from Kagio; Lydia Wanjiru from Kutus; Susan Wakuthii from Ngurubani.

The identity of the fourth woman, who hails from Kimbimbi was not immediately established.

A physical fight among the women followed the deadlock, with some of them sustaining minor injuries.

It took the intervention of police officers from Kerugoya post to stop the fight.

The funeral home's management decided to only allow the deceased’s immediate family member to sign for the collection of the remains.

The four allowed the deceased’s uncle, Stanley Ngigi, to bury him at his home in Ngomongo Village in Kirinyaga Central sub-County.

This was after the deceased's family promised to include them in the sharing of his wealth.

Gichobi’s body was buried on Wednesday afternoon with each of the four women, who had at least one son with the deceased, attending.
Gichobi was not living with any of the four ladies at the time of his passing.

His wife said he then drank a cool glass of water. 'Shortly afterwards he started to have chest pains so I took him to a nearby clinic, but he died on the way,' she said.
