My promise to mum won’t make me act pornographic movies –Charles Okocha

Popular actor and Instagram comedian, Charles Okocha, has spent over a decade in the Nigeria movie industry and has played several roles except anyone involving nudity.

However, during the week, the actor posted a snippet of his recent project on his Instagram page. In the video, the actor was seen to be seemingly having aggressive sex with a lady while promising her N50,000 for her service.

Apparently, the lady in the video could not take the aggressiveness any longer, so she stopped, rejected the money and left the room.

In a chat with Saturday Beats, the actor turned singer stated that he would never endorse pornography or feature in such a movie due to a promise he made to his mother.

He said, “There is no way I can feature in a pornographic movie or act nude because of my mother and the way I was raised. My mother supports me in everything I do but what I promised her was that I was not going to feature in such movies.

That is something I would never do because of my mother. I can act crazy roles and even appear half naked by wearing briefs but I can never be stark naked in a movie.

“People have a right to their opinion but I am not endorsing pornography in Nollywood. I portray any role that is given to me professionally and that is what makes me an actor.

As long as the producers that pay me to do a job are happy with my work, then I am okay. My true fans understand that it is just make-believe and I do not see why people should be mad about it.

“Why should I promote soft pornography? I have two children – male and female. I am a responsible father. I am a realist so when I am given a job, once I am sure that it is the right thing to do, I do it very well.

I see no reason why people should get worked up over something they ought not to get worked up about. Before I put up the post, I made people know that it was from a movie scene and it is my profession so I see nothing wrong in posting it and asking people to wait till the movie is out because it is an interesting one.

I see nothing wrong in what I posted because people did not see me stark naked, all they saw was an impression of me having s-x aggressively with a lady. It is just make-believe.”

While some Nigerians condemned the video, especially as this is the month of Ramadan and Muslims are fasting worldwide, the actor told Saturday Beats that some fans even asked why he did not expose his private parts.

“If you go through the comments people posted after I uploaded that video, you would see where some people were asking why I was not stark naked. Some said that it was the reason why they like foreign movies because those ones would expose their bodies. The truth is that you cannot please everybody,” he said.

Black attorney clarifies her project litigated release for 17 inmates, not Kim Kardashian

This week several outlets have reported Kim Kardashian West got freedom for 17 prison inmates . But now one of the women actually responsible the work is coming forward to clear up any confusion caused by misleading headlines.

Tuesday, attorney and criminal justice reform advocate Brittany K. Barnett, took to her personal Facebook page to say that it was actually two African American women — herself and colleague MiAngel Cody, who fought to free for the inmates through the Buried Alive Project and that Kardashian is a major funder of their efforts.

“We attempted to get grants from these large foundations shelling out MILLIONS of dollars to other organizations but would not look our way because they so-called don’t fund ‘direct services,’ ” she continued. “Our hands were full picking locks to human cages, we didn’t have time to participate in glorified begging from the nonprofit industrial complex only to be turned down.”

Barnett and Cody work on release for the incarcerated through the Buried Alive Project, which assists them through representing them in court, while also targeting legislators for policy change and also spreading awareness of the plight of the inmates, many of whom have been given sentences of life without parole.

In her Facebook post, Barnett explains how Kardashian West was a major force in helping the women out financially and says she is immensely grateful to the reality star for bringing both funding and visibility to their efforts.

“Kim linked arms with us to support us when foundations turned us down,” she continued. “We and our clients and their families have a lot of love for her and are deeply grateful for her. Regardless of who helped fund us for the past three months, in 90 days, TWO black women lawyers freed SEVENTEEN people from LIFE W/O PAROLE sentences – the second most severe penalty permitted by law in America. Only two of us.”

French forces free 4 hostages in Burkina Faso

Four people, including two French tourists, abducted in early May in Benin, have been freed in Burkina Faso during a military operation conducted by French special forces, President Emmanuel Macron’s office said on Friday.

French special forces carried out the raid under cover of dark over the night of Thursday-Friday, supported by U.S. intelligence and troops from France’s Barkhane operation deployed in the Sahel region to counter militants.

All four hostages were safe, President’s office said, adding that a U.S. woman and a South Korean woman were also freed in the covert operation.

“The precise and determined actions of French soldiers allowed us to take out the kidnappers while protecting the lives of the hostages,” France’s army chief said in a separate statement, describing the militant group as “terrorists”.

France, the former colonial power in the region, intervened in Mali in 2013 to drive out militants, who had occupied the north of the country and has since kept about 4,500 troops in the Sahel.

The region, a vast, sparsely-populated desert area, has seen a spike in violence by militant groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State in past years, highlighting the difficulty international partner’s face in restoring stability.

France’s defence ministry identified the fallen soldiers as two elite naval commandos.

Burkina Faso’s President Roch Kabore hailed the hostages’ release and offered condolences to the soldiers’ families.

“The joint military intervention that allowed us to achieve these results shows our common engagement in fighting against the forces of evil,” said Kabore in a Facebook post.

The two French tourists were kidnapped on May 1 in Benin’s Pendjari National Park, home to some of the region’s last big populations of African bush elephant, West African lions, hippo and buffalo.

The park lies on Benin’s northern frontier with Burkina Faso. Their safari guide was found dead, his body riddled with bullets, and their vehicle burned.

JAMB to release 2019 UTME results Saturday

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said that it would release the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results on Saturday.

The board’s Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed this to newsmen on Friday in Abuja.

According to him, the board will meet and consider the details available to be announced to the general public.

“We are releasing our results tomorrow, we are having a meeting today to consider what to put out,” he said.

The 2019 UTME was held from April 11 to April 18 with over 1.8 million registered candidates.

Since then, the board is yet to release the results.

It explained that it would first screen the entire candidates’ results to weed out those who were involved in any form of malpractice during the examination.

Meanwhile, the Registrar has paraded a staff of the board, who allegedly collected N25, 000 from a 2018 admission seeker.

He said the suspect was reported to the JAMB management after he couldn’t meet the demand.

The registrar reiterated the board’s determination to deal decisively with anyone, including its staff, found involved in any form of infraction.

” We are not hiding anything; we are ready to deal with anybody caught and they must face the wrath of the law,” he said.

Woman disgusted to find 'dead rat' cooked in her chicken teriyaki takeaway

A woman was absolutely disgusted to find what she says is a dead baby rat cooked in her chicken teriyaki takeaway.

Deyanira Cortes who lives in Columbus, Ohio, posted a video on Facebook showing what appears to be the dead animal mixed with her noodles.

In the footage, she picks up the 'rat' with her fork and shows people the 'little hand and face,' saying how 'foul' it is.

Deyanira says she wants people to share the video as a warning not to go to the takeaway - insisting "this is a rat" and saying she "can't believe it".

She claims she bought the food from Yihi Japan in the Polaris Fashion Place shopping mall in Columbus.

According to Fox News , the restaurant has been closed by the health department after an investigation into a complaint of a rat in the food.

Although no rodent activity was found, investigators did find other issues which caused it to be shut, including evidence of cockroaches, the report said.

In a public Facebook post, Deyanira wrote: "Please don't buy from Yihi Japan that's inside the Polaris Mall.

"I bought a chicken teriyaki and got a rat fetus cooked in the food it's disgusting.

"Please share so no one buys from there and we can avoid someone getting sick."

In the video, the woman says in Spanish: "This is incredible. Look what's been found here in this - a cooked rat.

"Oh My God, how disgusting. Look - it's cooked.

"It's a chicken teriyaki  I bought from the mall in Polaris Pkwy.

University degrees no longer meal ticket, Buhari tells Nigerian graduates

President Muhammadu Buhari has reminded Nigerian graduates that earning a university degree is no longer a meal ticket.

Buhari stated this on Friday at the 13th Convocation for the conferment of higher degrees, postgraduate diplomas and honorary degrees of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.

He told the graduates that university degrees and diplomas would rather assist them to grapple with challenges of life.

While saying that his administration would address youth unemployment and underemployment, Buhari called on the youths to embrace the opportunities the Federal Government had put in place to mitigate the unemployment situation.

He said, “You are cautioned that university degrees do not usher you into an El Dorado. It rather equips you with the competence to grapple with the ever-changing challenges of life of which youth unemployment is a vexatious part.

“ The Federal Government will remain undaunted in tackling the challenges of youth unemployment and underemployment through a matrix of initiatives.”

He listed such initiatives to include N-Power, the Bank of Industry Youth Entrepreneurship Support Programme and the Central Bank of Nigeria and Bank of Agriculture Support Schemes.

Buhari, whose address was read by the Minister of State for Education, Anthony Anwuka, commended the management of the university for the infrastructural developments on the campus.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Joseph Ahaneku, said the 13th convocation of the institution was for the 2017/2018 academic year.

No fewer than 6,500 were conferred with first degrees; 182 received postgraduate diplomas while 763 were conferred with Master’s degrees and 269 got PhD degrees.

The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, and Chief Emeka Offor were conferred with honorary doctorate degrees in science, politics and strategy and entrepreneurship, respectively.

Woman pours hot water on 14-year-old cousin in Lagos

The Lagos State Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has commenced investigation into the alleged torture of a 14-year-old boy, Segun Kushadi, by his aunt.

The woman, who is identified simply as Mrs Olofinlade, reportedly scalded Kushadi’s shoulder with hot water for using a bad pot to heat the water.

The victim lived with Olofinlade on Aderele Street, Egbeda, Lagos.

City Round gathered that the woman had subjected the boy to abuse since he was brought from Ogun State by his father to live with her.

It was said that a good Samaritan saw Segun on the street with the burn and prodded him on the cause.

The resident was said to have reported the case to a human rights organisation in the state after the boy revealed his ordeal to him.

A source told City Round that the woman was arrested by the police, but was released on the same day.

He said, “The boy has been living with Mrs Olofinlade for about one year now. Since then, she has been maltreating him over any slight provocation. On April 25, 2019, she asked him to boil water in the morning which he did.

“Due to the fact that they didn’t have a kettle, he asked her which pot he should use and she told him to use any pot. When the water had boiled, she asked him to bring it. On seeing the water, she flared up, asking him why he used a certain pot. The boy kept quiet, and the next thing, she carried the pot and tossed the hot water over his body.

“With the assistance of the human rights group, she was arrested by the police. Unfortunately, they released her that very day and warned her not to beat the boy again.”

The source added that earlier on the day of the incident, Olofinlade had beaten Segun while he was washing clothes.

However, Olofinlade while speaking to our correspondent on the telephone on Thursday denied pouring hot water on her cousin.

She said one of the handles of the pot Segun used to heat the water had broken and the pot was leaking, adding that she had warned him not to use it.

She stated, “Segun is like a son to me. He is not an outsider. He poured the hot water on himself. If anybody tells you that I poured the water on him, the person is my enemy. The pot that I warned him not to use was the one he used. One of the handles of the pot is broken. I warned him not to use it because the pot is also leaking.

“The pot fell from his hand. Why would I collect the pot and pour the water on him? The pot is still at the police station. There is a man in our area, who is my enemy. He is the one spreading the false information that I poured hot water on the boy.”

The father of the victim, Mr Simoni Kushadi, said he brought Segun from their home town in Ijoun, Ogun State, last year after he finished his primary school education.

Simoni, a farmer and father of five, said he relocated Segun to Lagos because he did not have the means to send him to secondary school.

He stated, “After he finished his primary school education, their mother divorced me. I didn’t have the means to take care of him and his siblings. That was why I brought him to Mrs Olofinlade. Segun’s elder brother, who is the eldest child, is living with a doctor.

“The three other children are living with me. I have advised that the case should be settled since the day I learnt about it. This woman is helping me to send him to school. Even if he sustains any injury, she is the one that will treat him.”

Our correspondent gathered that after the police released the woman, a rights activist reported the case to NAPTIP and the woman was re-arrested.

NAPTIP Commander in Lagos, Mr Daniel Atokolo, said Segun had been taken into protective custody where the burn he suffered was being treated.

He said, “The woman was arrested and the boy is undergoing treatment at a shelter. She is presently on bail but she is expected to be reporting in our office daily until we finish investigation.

“However, the boy is not returning to her. His parents have been invited. They will be sensitised first before he is reunited to them so that they won’t send him out again.”

The Director of Esther Child Rights Foundation, which is following the case, Mrs Esther Ogwu, berated the police for “the poor handling” of the case.

She urged NAPTIP to ensure justice was served and advised parents against sending out their children to live with relatives.

She said, “I am happy that the child was rescued by NAPTIP, which is the most important thing. NAPTIP should make sure the woman faces the consequences required because her conduct is indirectly an attempted murder.

“I was surprised when I learnt that the woman had been released from police custody, and the boy was released to her. Afonka Police Station didn’t do their job on this case.

“My advice to parents is that they should give birth to children they can take care of. They should not be sending out their children to live with people. They should take proper care of their kids.”

Court stops Ganduje from splitting Kano emirate

A High Court sitting in Kano on Friday stopped Governor Abdullahi Ganduje from implementing the decentralisation of Kano Emirate.

Ganduje had on Wednesday signed into a law a bill creating four additional emirates in the state.

The court also stopped the Kano State House of Assembly and the attorney-general of the state from recognising the new four emirates.

An exparte motion, dated May 10, 2019, and filed by one Hon Sule Gwarzo, before Justice Nasiru Saminu, had asked the court to restrain the respondents from taking any action of creating four additional emirates.

In an order of interim injunction, the court directed all parties in this suit to maintain status quo, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

The move has been widely viewed as a move aimed at reducing the influence of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi.

Meanwhile, Ganduje has defended his decision to create four additional emirates in the state, denying accusations that the aim is to ridicule the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Ganduje insisted there was no vendetta against the former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, but the latest move was meant to bring the traditional institution into full participation in governance.

What has kept me and Waje as friends – Omawunmi

Singer Omawunmi has explained what as kept she and her bestie as freids over the years. According to Oma, it’s just understanding each other. Speaking to Saturday Beats she also talked about how it has been easy to work with each other as women.

“It is very easy to work with women, especially those that are professionals. Sometimes, people have the impression that women are supposed to be slow and that we do not grasp things easily but the truth is that women are one of the best multitaskers in the world. So, when you give a woman a task, she thinks of how she can be the best at the job and also the best version of herself so that you can come back and work with her.

“As regards me and Waje, we have been friends for a long time and I always tell her that if we were a man and woman and had a child together, the child would have become a teenager by now. It does not mean that we do not have issues but whenever such happens, we sit down and trash them out. I think that it is one of the things that make us friends and good business partners.”
