Appeal Court in Cross River rules man must die for killing daughter’s boyfriend

The Appeal Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, has affirmed the decision of a High Court that sentenced a former employee of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Godwin Elewana, to death by hanging for murder.

Elewana, in suit Number CA/C/278C/2018, had appealed against the ruling of the Calabar High Court, which sentenced him to death for allegedly shooting to death a 22-year-old student, Douglas Ojugbo, said to be the boyfriend of his daughter.

Delivering the judgement, Justice Y. Ninpar, on behalf of three other judges of the Appeal Court, said, “The court, having gone through all the evidence and addresses by counsels for both parties, finds the judgement of the lower court credible and therefore valid before the law.”

The presiding judge of the High Court in Calabar, Justice Ukpa Ebitam, had said in his ruling that the prosecution team, led by Mr. Eneji Amajama, a Deputy Director in the Department of Public Prosecutions in the State Ministry of Justice, proved its case that the accused committed the crime.

He made reference to the several confessional statements, hospital reports and exhibits presented during the trial as reasons why the accused was convicted.

He had stated, “The prosecution team also proved the second ingredient of the murder, which was the intentional act. To have fired the victim twice with his pump action gun, I agree that the killing was intentional and I hereby find the accused person guilty of murder.

“Subject to Section 319 of the Criminal Code of Cross River State, any person who commits murder is sentenced to death by hanging.”

PDP threatens to sue FG, minister over accusation of threat to democracy

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party is perfecting plans to drag the Federal Government and the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to court over the allegation levelled against it that it was planning to sabotage the government.

Investigations by Punch Abuja on Thursday showed that the former ruling party was taking the allegation seriously and that its national leaders had agreed to challenge the claim by the government in court.

It was however not clear if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would also be dragging the government to court on the matter.

His spokesman, Paul Ibe, told a Punch correspondent that he had yet to have a discussion with him (Atiku) over the issue.

“I have not had a discussion with him on that (court decision) yet. I don’t know the direction he would follow,” Ibe told our correspondent on Thursday.

Recall that the Federal Government, through the Information Minister, Lai Mohammed, had alleged on Wednesday that the PDP was playing what it called a dangerous brand of opposition politics, which it warned could derail the country’s democracy if it was not urgently addressed.

Sources close to the national leadership of the PDP said that the party had discussed the possibility of dragging both the Federal Government and the minister to court over the claim.

However, it was said that the final decision on the matter would be taken when the National Legal Adviser, Mr Emmanuel Enoidem returns to Abuja.

A source close to the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the party would not allow the allegation by the minister to go unchallenged.

“We will not allow such comments to go unchallenged. You cannot just brand us as undemocratic and we will allow it to go.

“No, this is a democratic party and we nursed this democracy for 16 years before the All Progressives Congress came on board. How then did we become undemocratic? They will have to come and tell Nigerians,” the source said.

When contacted, the National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus said the main opposition party was still consulting and would “likely go to court over the comment.”

EFCC arraigns 5 Kano officials over employment scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday arraigned one Abduljalal Salisu alongside four employees of the Kano Road Traffic Agency before Justice Faruk Lawal of the Kano High Court, for alleged involvement in an employment scam.

The defendants were arraigned on three counts of conspiracy, forgery and fraud, contrary to sections 96, 97, 363 and 364 of the Penal Code.

All the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecuting counsel, Mr. Michael Ojo, told the court that in March, the defendants conspired with the intent to defraud one Anas Ahmad after promising to procure a job for him at Karota.

Ojo said the defendants presented a document titled, ‘Letter of offer of pensionable appointment at Karota’ to one Sabiu Muhammad.

The prosecuting counsel also told the court that within the same period, the defendants forged a document titled, ‘Letter of permanent and pensionable appointment at State Universal Basic Education Board Kano’ to one Umar Habibu.

One of the counsel to the defendants, Rabiu Abdullahi, applied for the bail of his clients in a letter dated May 9, and cited Section 35 (5) of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) to support his application.

Justice Lawal Faruk granted the defendants bail in the sum of N250,000 each, with two reliable sureties in like sum.

He said one of the sureties must be the ward head of where the defendants resided or a civil servant on grade level 12, while the second surety must have landed property, which must be ascertained by the ward head.

The judge also ordered the defendants and their sureties to submit two recent passport photographs and adjourned the matter till June 27 for commencement of trial.

Court jails Facebook hackers in Uyo

Justice A.A. Okeke of the Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State has convicted and sentenced two Facebook hackers, Odion Destiny Osas and Eroh Emmanuel Benadine to three years imprisonment each for internet fraud.

Their journey to prison started when one Ncheta Omerekpe petitioned the Uyo Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on their illicit online activities.

According to Ncheta, the convicts had in June 2018, hacked into his Facebook account, impersonated him and sent several distress messages to his friends and associates asking them for money, which some of his friends actually sent to the convicts.

When they were first arraigned on February 8, 2019, they pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining by false pretence, preferred against them by the EFCC.

The prosecution, through its counsel, J.O. Abolarin opened trial and presented a witness, Mustapha Suleman, an EFCC detective, who tendered several documents including a signed printout of their First Bank statements of account and the written statements of the nominal complainant among others, which were admitted in evidence.

At the resumed sitting the convicts opted to change their pleas, which the court granted. They both pleaded “guilty” to the three counts.

Justice Okeke, thereafter, convicted the hackers and sentenced them to one year imprisonment on each count without the option of a fine, and ordered that the punishments run concurrently.

Senate okays June 12 as Democracy Day in Nigeria

The Nigerian Senate on Thursday unanimously endorsed June 12 of every year as Democracy Day in Nigeria.

The Senate passed the bill seeking to legalise June 12 as Democracy Day just like the House of Representatives had already done.

If the bill is assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari, May 29 celebrated as Democracy Day since 2000 will cease to be so marked.

It also means that June 12 of every year will replace May 29 as Democracy Day in the country if the bill is signed by Buhari

Buhari, had in June 2018, as a way to immortalise late Chief M.K.O Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election, declared June 12 as the new Democracy Day.

Securities and Exchange Commission warns Nigerians against trending ponzi scheme

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has warned Nigerians against fraudsters currently running an online investment scheme tagged “Loom Money Nigeria.”

Acting Director-General of the commission, Ms Mary Uduk gave the warning at a news conference on Thursday in Abuja.

A statement by SEC’s Head of Media, Mrs Efe Ebelo, said that Uduk, who was represented by acting Executive Commissioner, Operations of SEC, Mr Isyaku Tilde, said Loom Money Nigeria had taken over the social media.

She said that the scheme targeted young people, luring them to participate in a pyramid model of the Ponzi.

The director-general disclosed that the fraudsters carried out their illegitimate activities via social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp.

She added that they lured young Nigerians to invest as low as N1000 and N13,000 and to get as much as eight times the value of the investment in 48 hours.

Uduk said that the venture was a Ponzi scheme, where returns would be paid from other people invested funds, adding that it had no tangible business model.

“We are aware of the activities of an online investment scheme tagged ‘Loom Money Nigeria’.

“The platform has embarked on an aggressive online media campaign on Facebook and WhatsApp.

“They lure the investing public to participate by joining various Loom whatsapp groups to invest as low as N1,000 and N13,000 and get as much as eight times the value of the investment in 48 hours.

“Unlike MMM that had a website and the promoter known, the people promoting Loom are not yet known and this pyramid scheme operates through closed groups mainly on Facebook and Whatsapp.

“If it were a local Ponzi scheme with known offices, it would be very easy for the Commission to seal their offices and freeze their accounts.

“We therefore wish to notify the investing public that the operation of this investment scheme has no tangible business model hence it’s a Ponzi scheme, where returns are paid from other people’s invested sum.

“Also, its operation is not registered by the Commission,” she said.

Uduk, therefore, advised the public to distance themselves from the scheme, adding that anyone that subscribed to the illegal activity did so at his own risk.

Church baptises 38 converted commercial sex workers in Rivers

Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, the General Overseer, Omega Power Ministry, OPM, worldwide has taken his evangelism a notch higher when he baptised 38 repented former sex workers converted on the streets of Port Harcourt.

In his bid to clear the streets of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, off the menace of sex slavery and prostitution, Chinyere said he has the mandate to reach out and bring the prostitutes to Christ.

To achieve this divine commission, she has undertaken personal evangelism to the streets and brothels where the prostitutes ply their trade and take the gospel to them.

So far, the divine project has been largely successful as hitherto lost souls were being harvested.

Performing the ceremony at the church headquarters on Saturday, May 12, the servant of God reiterated the huge cost of rehabilitating the whole converts by providing free accommodation, free clothing, feeding and provision of shops, stocked with wares and commodities to assist the new converts to begin a new life as enormous.

The new converts who were re-christened by the G.O as the daughters of Doctor Jesus, were seen in high spirit while going to be baptized.

Some of them who spoke under conditions of anonymity said their baptism signaled a turning point in their lives, a new beginning and a total commitment to serving God with the whole of their lives.

Some of them who came out from the pool of water burst into tears as they recalled their past wrongful life.

Court dissolves 41-year marriage as wife accuses husband of impregnating her sister, daughter

A petitioner, Mrs. Mabel Alli, had approached the court to end her 41-year marriage to Richard for impregnating her sister and their daughter.

Stating her case before the court, Mabel had said, “My husband sexually molested all three of our daughters. After impregnating my sister, he took one of our daughters to the hospital to have an abortion.

“Our 19-year-old girl also reported to me that he always sneaked into her room to have intercourse with her and I had caught him in the act.

“My friends and domestic staff were not spared. I had caught him with them too, he is just a womaniser,” the estranged wife told the court.

The 63-year-old businesswoman said that her husband was fetish and also wanted to use her for money ritual in order to finance his political ambition.

Mabel also alleged that her husband did not take care of the children.

The mother of four begged the court to terminate the union, saying she was no longer interested.

However, Richard, who denied all the allegations, welcomed the divorce, saying he, too, was no longer interested in the marriage.

The 66-year-old pastor denied sleeping with his wife’s sister, friends, housemaids or their daughters, saying that it was his wife that took their daughter for abortion.

According to him, he never took his wife to any herbalist and had never ever threatened kill her.

The respondent said that he went to Kenya to attend prayer conference and not to get power and charms as his wife had claimed.

In judging the case, an Igando Customary Court in Lagos, on Thursday, dissolved the 41- year marriage of Mrs. Mabel Alli and her husband, Richard, a pastor, over incest.

The Court President, Mr. Adeniyi Koledoye, said it appeared that the estranged couple were tired of the marriage and all efforts to reconcile them had failed.

“Since both parties agreed to the dissolution of the marriage, this court has no choice but to dissolve it.

“The court hereby pronounces the marriage between Mabel Alli and Pastor Richard dissolved. Both of you henceforth cease to be husband and wife.

“Each of you should go your separate ways. The court wishes both of you well in your future endeavours,” he said.

YouTuber who snogged sister grosses internet out again by kissing his mum

Last month Chris Monroe horrified the internet when he shared a video of himself kissing a woman he claimed was his half-sister.

The YouTuber, who posts under the username PrankInvasion, filmed himself making out with Kaitlyn O'Connor after 'stalking' her around their house.

To date the video has been viewed over seven million times and over 41,000 people have commented on it.

Many people were left reeling after watching the clip, but they haven't been given much time to recover - because the so-called prankster is back at it again.

In a new video, Chris locks lips with another important lady in his life - his mother.

Entitled 'Kissing my actual mom prank', the footage shows, the American back in the house from before, but this time he's following an older woman around.

He claims this person is his mum and that he's planning to convince her to kiss him, so he can "top" his last video.

He says: "This video we're gonna top my kissing my sister prank video. I'm gonna kiss my mom. It feels so weird to say that but it's going down.

"Only thing is, I was planning to shoot this video later this week, but it turned out my mom has an emergency, she's gotta leave the country."

So the YouTuber rushes to complete his prank -  even after the woman yells at him that she doesn't want to do it.

After much begging on his part, she agrees to help him go viral once again and they play a game of rock, paper, scissors for the kiss.

The mum loses and the pair seal the deal with a kiss on the lips, which thankfully is much more chaste than the one he previously shared with his sister.

Afterwards they both look very embarrassed and can't stop saying "oh my god".

Many people were grossed out by the fact that he'd made another video kissing a supposed family member, with some asking if his dad was going to be in his next one.

It's not yet known if the woman in the video is actually his relative, or someone he has hired, as after all the whole thing is intended to be a 'prank'.

However the video maker previously confirmed to The Sun that Kaitlyn is his real sister, so it's likely this too could be real - either way, the whole thing is very disturbing.

Sack of 2,000 workers in Ekiti height of wickednes, Fayose says

Former Ekiti Governor, Ayo Fayose, has described the revocation by Gov. Kayode Fayemi, of appointment of 2,000 workers by him shortly before leaving office, as “height of wickedness and political vendetta.”

Fayose called on all the affected civil servants not to be disillusioned, but to approach the court to challenge the State Government’s decision.

In a statement by his spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, on Thursday in Ado Ekiti, the former governor said that sacking people duly engaged in the service by a duly constituted government was most unfortunate.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state government on Thursday announced the cancellation of 2000 appointments carried out by the Fayose-led administration in October 2018.

The government declared that their recruitment did not follow due process and was politically lopsided to give undue advantage to the cronies of the former governor.

Fayose, however, said that the incumbent governor, by the action, had succeeded in writing his name in the history books of Ekiti as one who inflicted sorrow on the people.

“He has demonstrated this by sacking Ekiti people who were duly employed by the state government.

“Whoever that applauds this show of wickedness will be reminded in future when actions of Fayemi will also be reviewed.

“As for those who have now become victims of this act of wickedness and political vendetta, they should enforce their rights to seek redress in the court of law,” he said.
