Why we sacked local govt chairmen - Seyi Makinde

Chief Bisi Ilaka, the Chief of Staff to the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde has explained the reasons behind government’s decision to sack the 68 local council chairmen in the state. Also sacked are the elected councilors.

Ilaka said that the sack became necessary because the elections that produced them were illegal and not credible, adding that they emerged as councils’ administrators from the election that contravened a court order.

Ilaka explained that the Makinde-led administration is committed to correcting all the wrongs of the immediate past administration. He assured that the Peoples Democratic Party-led administration in the state would obey court orders.

He said: “We have nothing to hide and this government is waiting for them to challenge the decision of this administration. All security agencies have been informed about the development”.

12 die in Virginia Beach shooting

Twelve people have died, including the suspected gunman, after a shooting occurred at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center on Friday afternoon, according to police.

Six additional victims were taken to the hospital with injuries, Virginia Beach Police Chief James Cervera told reporters during a press conference Friday evening. An emergency services spokesperson would not comment on the condition of the injured victims.

One of the injured victims is a Virginia Beach Police officer who was saved by his bulletproof vest, Cervera said.

The suspect, who was a current employee at the Municipal Center, walked into the building at around 4 p.m. and began to “indiscriminately fire upon all the victims,” Cervera said.

Responding officers then entered the building and secured as many victims as they could, Cervera said. The suspect engaged the officers, who returned fire, striking and killing him, Cervera said.

The shooting occurred on multiple floors, Cervera said. The suspect has not yet been identified.

Deji Adeyanju faults President Buhari’s participation in Saudi Arabia’s Islamic summit

President Buhari on Thursday, 30th of May, departed Abuja for the summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

It’s the 14th session of the conference and was hosted by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and attended by heads of state and government of member-states.

The summit theme is “Makkah al-Mukarramah Summit: Hand in hand toward the future”. It seeks to develop a unified stance on events in the Islamic world.

Anyway, Political activist, Deji Adeyanju however feels it was unnecessary for President Buhari to attend saying Nigeria is not an Islamic nation. Recating to it on Twitter, he said;

''Why is President Buhari dragging Nigeria into an alliance with Organization of Islamic Nations? Is Nigeria an Islamic nation? Why is this Saudi Arabia alliance necessary? This shit irritates me. Section 10 of our constitution is clear. Nigeria is a secular state.''

Despite banning LGTB people from Military, President Trump gives them a shout out in Pride Month

President Trump has kicked off Pride Month by congratulating the LGBT contributions after his administration effectively banned transgender people from the military.

POTUS tweeted, "As we celebrate LGBT Pride Month and recognize the outstanding contributions LGBT people have made to our great Nation, let us also stand in solidarity with the many LGBT people who live in dozens of countries worldwide that punish, imprison, or even execute individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation."

Earlier this month the Trump Administration also announced a proposal that would essentially allow health care providers to discriminate based on gender identity, rolling back progress for the transgender community that was made over the past decade.

Kim Kardashian visits Kevin Cooper on death row in an effort to free him

Kim Kardashian was on San Quentin's death row Thursday on a mission!

Kim, sporting a noticeably baggy black jumpsuit, took her prison reform efforts on the road to one of America's most notorious prisons, with the goal of freeing an inmate who has been awaiting death since 1983.

61-year-old Kevin Cooper was convicted of committing 4 heinous murders in Chino Hills, CA in the '80s and sent directly to death row. Between then and now, the death penalty was suspended, reinstated, there was a gas chamber and then death by lethal injection and all the while Cooper sat waiting to die, always proclaiming his innocence.

Kim has now spoke about how he feels about Cooper. Posting a photo from her visit, Kim wrote; "I had an emotional meeting with Kevin Cooper yesterday at San Quentin's death row. I found him to be thoughtful and honest and I believe he is innocent of the crimes for which he was convicted."

Hopefully God will use her to make him a free man. Even if he is guilty, it’s been 36 years, he must have learnt the hard way. #forgiveness is key.

North Korea executes official for failed U.S. summit

Kim Jong-un has executed his envoy to the U.S. for 'betraying the supreme leader' as part of ruthless purge of officials after the dictator's failed summit with Donald Trump, it has been claimed.

Kim Hyok Chol is said to have been shot by a firing squad in March at Mirim Airport for being 'won over to the US,' during nuclear negotiations with Trump.

The top diplomat, who accompanied Kim on his private train ahead of the summit in Vietnam, was one of four senior foreign ministry officials executed at the airfield, a source told South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo.

The other officials were not named, but all allegedly became U.S. 'spies' after the failed second negotiations between Trump and Kim Jong-un ended abruptly in February.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said this morning that Washington was checking the reports.

According to the reports, another senior official, Kim Yong Chol, who had been in nuclear discussions with Pompeo, was sent to a forced labour camp for ideological re-education.

Kim Song Hye, a woman who worked with Hyok Chol in talks with Pompeo was reportedly sent to another prison camp. The paper also said Kim Jong Un's interpreter Shin Hye Yong was sent to a prison camp for a mistake at the summit.

She failed to translate Kim's new proposal when Trump declared 'no deal' and walked away from the table, Chosun reported, citing another unnamed diplomatic source.

Shin was charged with making critical interpretation mistakes that included missing an unspecified 'last-minute offer' the North Korean leader supposedly made as Trump was about to walk out, Chosun reported.

Rihanna fans are shocked to discover they have been pronouncing her name incorrectly

Rihanna fans were shocked to discover they had been mispronouncing the singer's name after she introduced herself in a video for British Vogue.

The Umbrella hitmaker, 31, caused turmoil on Twitter when she spoke her name in a video posted by the publication from her Fenty pop-up store in Paris last Thursday.

In the clip, she said 'Hello British Vogue, it's Rihanna' - pronouncing her name 'Ree-Anna' rather than 'Ree-Ah-Na', which is mostly the American pronounciation.

This greatly confused fans in the US, who commonly refer to the songstress by the second, and apparently incorrect, variation.

After viewing the divisive video, one Twitter user said: 'So, we've been pronouncing Rihanna's name wrong this whole time'.

Another said: 'I love how we all collectively choose to pronounce Rihanna's name wrong'.

'I am so p***** at all of us for pronouncing Rihanna's name wrong this entire time. I am so sorry queen @rihanna,' said a third.

Others confirmed they already knew how to correctly say the Barbadian singer's name, but still pronounce it 'Ree-Ah-Na'.

One social media user said: 'I know how to pronounce Rihanna's name but I still say it incorrectly like 60 per cent of the time'.

Another added: 'I've heard her pronounce Rihanna this way but I still like saying "Ri-Anne-Na" but that's not fair to her.

Just like we been pronouncing Grande wrong, when it's "Grand-ie" not "Grande"'.

Some insisted that British and Australian fans have been pronouncing her name correctly all along - and even suggested the mispronunciation is why she moved to London.

'See this is why she moved to the UK we're the only ones that have been saying her name right', one Twitter user said.

Rihanna - born Robyn Rihanna Fenty - revealed she had been living under the radar in London for the past year earlier this month.

APC to Makinde: you started on a disappointing note

The Oyo State All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed dismay over what it described as “myriad of disappointing actions already taken by Governor Seyi Makinde” less than 24 hours after his inauguration.

The party warned that the new governor “might create more crises for himself, if care was not taken”.

This came as local government chairmen vowed to remain in office despite Makinde’s dissolution directive.

The chairmen contended that he lacked the power to dissolve a constitutionally elected local government administration.

But, Oyo APC, in a statement in Ibadan yesterday by its Assistant Publicity Secretary, Prince Ayobami Adejumo, regretted that the new governor started to breach the oath of office right from the venue of the swearing-in ceremony when he failed to condemn the activities of his supporters, who allegedly harassed innocent people and perceived opponents.

Addressing reporters in Ibadan on Thursday, ALGON chairman, Prince Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye, called on security agencies to protect members of the association and elected councillors as they continue to carry out their duties in office.

The council bosses said they remained the democratically elected chairmen and would still report to offices as such.

At a news conference, which held at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan, Abass-Alshinloye noted that there was a subsisting valid court order which prohibited the governor or even the House of Assembly from dissolving elected local council authorities in the state.

Togolese commits suicide for losing N7,000

A 22-year-old petty trader has committed suicide after losing the N7,000 she realised from her trade.

Kaivi Kayode, the Togolese woman, was said to have gulped a bottle of insecticide known as Sniper at her 4, Jaz Street home, Aiyetoro in Ijanikin, a Lagos suburb, on Sunday.

Kaivi, it was gathered, had lamented the loss of the money she made on Saturday around 12pm, only for her body to be found inside the room where she locked herself up.

The Nation learnt that the deceased’s 15-year-old sister, Favour, was the first person to see her body and she raised the alarm.

A source said the deceased was bitter over the loss of the money because she was in debt and intended to pay off so that she could get new stock.

“It was her younger sister who shouted. She later went to the police station to report.

“I heard that the woman killed herself because the N7,000 she made from hawking on Saturday was stolen.

“She went inside and locked the door. When her younger sister did not see her after about one hour, she went to check on her. She discovered that the door was locked from inside.

“She knocked, but her sister did not answer. So she forced the door open and saw Kaivi on the ground lifeless. An empty bottle of Sniper was beside her. She screamed and people came to the scene,” the source further said.
