Confusion Over Buhari's Proclamation of 9th National Assembly

A document dated May 30, 2019 which announced the presidential proclamation of the first session of the Ninth National Assembly billed for June 11 caused confusion at the federal parliament on Monday.

The document, which had the seal of the President and claimed to have been signed by President Muhammadu Buhari, was not addressed to any particular official of the National Assembly.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, whose responsibility it is to convey such document to the National Assembly, denied knowledge of such communication when our correspondent contacted him.

Enang appealed to The Punc to suspend any action on the document pending his confirmation.

He was yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

Attempts to confirm the authenticity of the document from the office of the Clerk to the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori, who would execute the proclamation, also failed on Monday.

The Director of Information of the federal parliament, Mr Rawlings Agada, told The Punch that he could not confirm the receipt of such communications since the clerk was not available for the necessary clarifications.

Tramadol, 'Igbo' Influence Made Us Kill Our Boss & His Daughter – Guards

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested two persons for allegedly killing their boss on the Ojomo Akintan Estate, Olu Foam area of Akure. The suspects, Tasiu Abubakar and Ayuba Idris, were said to be security guards employed by the deceased.

They were paraded at the headquarters of the command on Monday for allegedly killing their boss, Mr Richard Kwakye, and his daughter, Tope, last month.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Undie Adie, said the suspects fled the state after committing the crime but were apprehended in Sokoto and Kano states.

According to him, the deceased were initially declared missing but after the suspects were arrested, they confessed that they killed Richard and his daughter and threw their bodies away.

The CP stated, “Upon receipt of the report of the incident, detectives from this command swung into action and Ayuba Idris, 20, was arrested in Kano State on May 16, 2019. The handset of the missing person, Richard, and his suits were recovered from him.

“Upon interrogation, he confessed that he and the second security guard, Taisu Abubakar, knew where the two missing persons were. He led detectives to a building on the Ojomo Akintan Estate, Olu Foam area of Akure, where the decomposing bodies of Richard Kwakye, 71, and Tope Kwakye, 27, were found.

“The detectives also tracked down Taisu Abubakar, 23, in Sokoto State. One of the victims’ laptops and some clothes were recovered from him. Upon interrogation, he also confessed to the murder of the victims.

“Both suspects said that they decided to kill the daughter on the same day the father was murdered in order to cover their track because she saw them when they killed her father.”

The commissioner said the suspects would be charged to court, while the decomposing bodies of the deceased had been deposited in the morgue.

On why they killed their employer and his daughter, Abubakar said the deceased did not offend them but they carried out the act under the influence of tramadol and Indian hemp.

Narrating how they committed the crime, he stated, “On that day, we took tramadol and Indian hemp and just decided to kill the man. While strangulating him, his daughter saw us, so we killed her too in order to cover up.”

The 71-year-old Richard was said to have been a worker on the estate and was given one of the buildings to live in with his daughter, a fresh graduate preparing to go for the National Youth Service Corps programme in July.

Obasanjo's Advise To Aisha Buhari Stirs Reactions

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has supported recent concerns raised by the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha, on insecurity and other challenges facing the country.

Obasanjo, however, advised her to engage her husband in “pillow talk” on the state of the nation.

The former President, according to a statement by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, said this while playing host to the members of the Editorial Board of a Social media platform, Penpushing Media at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Boardroom.

Some groups including the Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, have however said Obasanjo was right to call on Aisha to tell her husband the truth.

The President’s wife, Aisha, had last week renewed her criticisms of the Federal Government’s programmes.

She had also faulted the social investment programmes of her husband’s administration, saying there was no evidence to show that the funds allocated were judiciously utilised.

Mrs Buhari had said, “I am sure that my husband decided to put somebody from Kano because of the population and political impact it made.”

She said she discovered that key aspects of the programme were not properly implemented in Adamawa and Kano states.

Mrs Buhari, “So, I don’t know where the social investment was successful, maybe it worked out in some states. In my own state, only a local government benefitted out of the 22.

“I did not ask what happened and I do not want to know but for it to fail woefully in Kano, it is not a good sign and it is not a good thing.”

Also on Saturday, she challenged security agencies to quickly end banditry and other insecurity challenges in the country.

“The security agents should either assist to take action or allow the situation continues until bandits finish killing our people,” she had said.

But on Monday Obasanjo said it was good that the wife of the President raised the concerns.

He urged Aisha to engage her spouse in a “pillow talk” to inform him about the true position of the state of the nation.

The former President commended Mrs Buhari for her courage to speak out on the state of the nation.

Obasanjo advised the wife of President to adopt the bedroom approach to get her husband’s attention on the challenges in the country.

He said, “We have to put all things on the table to address these problems. Mind you, we have to be sincere and genuine with ourselves. It is nice that the President’s wife is talking; I think she did well, and maybe she should also have a pillow talk with the President.

“I believe every Nigerian family, individual, group is entitled to livelihood. It is the responsibility of all to make sure we have a dignified life. That should be our aim collectively.”

The statement added that the former President advocated increased sensitization to get the desired change Nigerians were yearning for.

Earlier in her speech, the Chairman, Editorial Board of the organisation, Mrs Funke Fadugba, was reported to have said that the visit was to brief the former President about the 3rd anniversary lecture of the organisation scheduled to hold on July 19.

Obasanjo is right – Ohanaeze
Meanwhile, the Deputy Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, Chuks Ibegbu, who spoke with The Punch, described Aisha Buhari as a patriot and a kind-hearted first lady.

He added, “She should force or cajole Buhari, her husband to the other room with pillow so they can have useful talks to address our challenges.

“Obasanjo is right. We live in a stone age here, even Rwanda and Chad are better than us now.”

Also Chief Emeka Attama, the Media Advisor to the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, said President Buhari appeared not to be in charge of his government, adding had he been in control he would have known that the government intervention programmes were not reaching the right people.

“Recently, the President commented that the level of poverty in the country was too high, that Nigerians were suffering. Mr President seems not to be in charge as to know what is happening in different parts of this country because if he knew he would have known that the intervention programmes of the Federal Government was not really reaching the right people.

“However, Obasanjo is very correct, if it only requires the wife to engage Buhari in a bedroom chat to be able to address this, so be it.”

Aisha expressing frustration, says Afenifere
On its part, Afenifere said the President’s wife was right to express her frustrations on the situations in the country, despite being told by the President that her place was in the bedroom and the kitchen.

The Afenifere Publicity Secretary, Yinka Odumakin, said, “One of the times Aisha spoke, the President said that her place was in the other room, and not in the political arena. So, I think, like every Nigerian, she goes to the social media to vent her frustrations and give her views.

“The former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, was throwing a funny one. If Aisha was told to remain in the other room and the kitchen, then the option is a pillow talk. But there is no doubt that the situation in the country is raising concerns for every rational Nigerian. This is why the First Lady too is venting her frustrations.”

We won’t take issue with Obasanjo – ACF
But the Arewa Consultative Forum said it would not take issue with Obasanjo over his advice to the President’s wife.

When contacted on the telephone on the northern body’s take on Obasanjo’s advice to Aisha, the National Publicity Secretary of the ACF, Alhaji Muhammad Ibrahim-Biu, said, “We do not want to take issue with Chief Obasanjo over his counsel to Mrs Aisha Buhari on the PMB’s administration.”

Beautiful Mother of 2 Emerges Babcock University Best Graduating Student

Babcock University in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, has graduated 1,926 first degree holders, among which was Mrs Edafe Dogo, a mother of two who graduated with a 4.95 cumulative grade point average, to emerge the overall best in the 2018/2019 academic session.

Dogo, who is a staff of the school, said she chose Business Education because of her love for teaching, a trait she picked from her mother who was an elementary school teacher.

While speaking with journalists at the 17th convocation of the institution held at the University Stadium on Sunday, she also disclosed that the support of God, her husband and lecturers enabled her to achieve the great feat.

“As a wife and mother of two children, I will say it was God and I trusted Him from the beginning because I didn’t know how to go about it. My family was wonderful, they cooperated with me. My husband helped out whenever I was tired and couldn’t meet up. Throughout it was just God, because without God the waking up early and sleeping late to read would have been in vain. I also had the best lecturers. They never gave up on us, they kept on pushing us until we achieved. I owe my success to my lecturers, family, colleagues and classmates.

“I feel it was easier for me because I was doing something I loved doing, every class or exam was enjoyable. When the results started rolling out I was amazed and just surrendered to God’s will. This is simply God’s will, there is nothing super about me,” Dogo enthused.

Court Sacks APC Rep-elect, Orders INEC to Give Certificate to PDP Candidate

An FCT High Court has nullified the election of Omar Tata of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Zaki Federal Constituency in Bauchi state.

The court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue certificate of return to the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Jatau Muhammad Auwal, who came second in the elections.

The FCT High Court, presided over by Justice Bello Kawu, declared as null and void the publication of the name of Mr Tata of the APC as winner of the seat in Zaki Federal Constituency. The court also ruled that the APC “does not have and cannot sponsor any candidate for Zaki Federal Constituency of Bauchi State for 2019 National Assembly Election.”

The judge further declared that the votes scored by Mr Tata in the election was null and void, then consequently ordered INEC to issue Certificate of Return to the candidate that come second in the election.

The court order followed an application filed by the PDP candidate in the election, Mr Auwal, who had challenged the emergence of Mr Tata as the winner of the election.

Mr Auwal had told the court that APC did not conduct any valid primary election through which Mr. Tata’s name was submitted to INEC as the flag-bearer for the party.

“Stop Attacking President Buhari” – Pastor Kumuyi counsels Nigerians

The General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, has appealed to Christians in Nigeria to stop the incessant attacks on President Buhari.

Speaking in his church in Gbagada, Lagos on Sunday June 2nd, the clergyman said it is ungodly for Christians to attack constituted authorities either by words, newspaper publications or other means available.

According to the pastor, God demands that Christians submit to constituted authorities either in the church, country, community and other forms of leadership.

Speaking during his sermon, Pastor Kumuyi said;
“Don’t attack the President of the country, whether in words or in the newspapers or through the Internet. Honor kings. Don’t disrespect or dishonor the governors. Don’t disrespect leaders of the community and leaders in the church. If we are to honor the governors in the states, how much more the pastors! ”

Police Arrest Three Over Invasion Of Okorocha’s House

The Imo state police command have arrested three domestic staff of the immediate past governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha, over the invasion of his bedroom in the early hours of Saturday, June 1st.

Yet to be identified hoodlums inavded the home of the former governor in the early hours of Saturday, June 1st. The former governor was at the time of the invasion in his house in Ogboko in the Ideato South Local Government Area of the state.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Rabiu Ladodo, says CCTV footage obtained form the house shows that the invasion was a mastermind of the domestic staff. Ladodo said three of the domestic staff including one of the cooks have been arrested.

“We have arrested three domestic staff of the immediate past governor. Preliminary investigation carried out by us showed that the invasion was carried out by those who are working there. We have obtained the CCTV footage in the house and that has helped our investigation. The footage showed that the invasion was purely an internal sabotage.

“We have arrested three domestic staff. We also arrested the cook. I want to assure Imo people that we are on top of the situation and we are doing everything possible to ensure that nothing is left undone in making sure that justice prevails,” Ladodo said.

Anthony Joshua Gets £20m, Andy Ruiz £5m For Winning

Andy Ruiz Jr might have produced one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight history on Saturday, but his pay cheque was distinctly lightweight, compared to Anthony Joshua’s.

Ruiz is understood to have made only around £5m from the fight despite taking home Joshua’s three belts.

He took the fight with just five weeks’ notice after Joshua’s original opponent Jarrell Miller failed three drugs tests in the build-up.

The cash is the largest purse of Ruiz’s career. His previous biggest payday came in at a reported £770,000 for his defeat by New Zealand’s Joseph Parker in 2017.

Oshiomhole Lacks Capacity To Run Political Party, says ex-APC Chairman Oyegun

A former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun, has criticised the leadership style of his successor and incumbent National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

According to him, Oshiomhole lacks the temperament and capacity to run a political party.

Odigie-Oyegun stated this in his response to a communique issued by the South-South APC State Chairmen, who blamed him for allegedly being the cause of conflicts within the party.

The Deputy National Chairman (North), Lawal Shuaibu, had in a May 28 letter, asked Oshiomhole to resign for allegedly running the APC like a private fiefdom.

He had alleged that many decisions attributed to the National Working Committee were personal decisions of the national chairman but imposed on the party without formal meeting.

But in defence of Oshiomhole, the six state chairmen who asked Shuaibu to apologise to the national chairman within seven days, blamed Odigie-Oyegun for the troubles in the party.

They claimed that it was the problems created by Odigie-Oyegun, that fuelled the unfortunate situation.

However, in a statement by his Public Affairs Adviser, Ray Morphy, in Abuja on Sunday, Odigie-Oyegun said the claims of the state chairmen were “ludicrous and infantile.”

He described the statement as an attempt to justify the failings of the party under Oshiomhole.

He said, “Oshiomhole fails because he lacks the temperament that is required to run a political party. He lacks the capacity to manage the different interests and tendencies that constitute a political party.

“He engages his mouth before engaging his mind, so he offends party members. So, how does that constitute traps by Oyegun, the erstwhile chairman?”

Odigie-Oyegun said Shuaibu in his letter had confirmed that Oshiomhole was running the party without recourse to the NWC.

He added, “He acts in direct opposite of decisions taken by NWC. No minutes of NWC meetings which, in any event, take place outside the party secretariat.

“How would you not have crises in states with the confusion that Oshiomhole created when he gave the states freedom to choose their methods of choosing candidates for elections?

“Much of the crisis in states arose out of sheer incapacity on the part of the current chairman. How does this Oshiomhole’s incapacity become traps by Oyegun?”

Giving reasons for the crisis in the party, Odigie-Oyegun said many party men were disappointed because of the unfairness and injustice meted to them during the primaries.

“Only a bad carpenter quarrels with his tools. Indeed Oshiomhole is degrading and demarketing the party. Rather than seek to bring more people on board, he is chasing people out of the party with his agbero style of engagement,” he added.

Man strangles seven-month-old daughter in Niger

The Niger State Police Command has arrested one Nasiru Musa, 30, of Salka village in the Magama Local Government Area of the state for allegedly strangling his seven months old daughter.

Musa was apprehended by police operatives attached to the Nasko Division following a tip-off.

It was learnt that the suspect on May 20, 2019, took his deceased child to an uncompleted building, where he allegedly strangled the infant while her mother was asleep.

Northern City News gathered on Sunday that the crime was exposed when the mother of the child woke from her slumber and could not find her child and raised the alarm, prompting neighbours to report the matter to the police after an earlier search yielded no result.

Police investigation led to Musa’s arrest. It was learnt that the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation.

It was gathered that the suspect, who impregnated the mother of his late daughter out of wedlock, was preparing for their wedding before the incident.

In an interview with Punch correspondent, the suspect said “I gave birth to my daughter out of wedlock and we (the mother and him) are preparing for our wedding before this happened. I cannot explain why I took her life; people will not believe me; it is like somebody hypnotised me I find it very difficult to explain.

“How am I going to explain to my fiancé what transpired? I know that is the end of (preparations for) the marriage; she will never forgive me and my friends will desert me.”

Asked if he had plans to use the deceased for rituals, Musa said, “God forbid. Magama people don’t use their children for rituals and that is why I cannot explain how I killed my own daughter.”
The command’s spokesman, Muhammad Abubakar, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect had confessed to the crime.

Abubakar added that the suspect would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigation.

Nigeria, Ghana sign MoU on cross-border search and rescue

The Federal Government through the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority for synergy and collaborative cross-border search and rescue around the common boundaries of the two states.

NAMA said the agreement was part of efforts to address issues arising from the flow of air traffic among adjacent Flight Information Regions.

It added that the MoU stipulates guidelines and procedures for collaboration on aircraft and weather/terrain information sharing, deployment of manpower as well as search and rescue equipment in the event of an incident or accident.

The agency said it also signed Letters of Agreement with the Ghana team specifying procedures to be followed for tactical separation of aircraft between Lagos and Accra.

The agency said, “Stipulated in the Letters of Agreement are details such as how air traffic controllers exchange or manage the movement of aircraft across the two centres in terms of radio frequencies, the point at which to transfer aircraft as well as established boundaries and altitude for transfer of aircraft across the common borders.

“Also contained in the agreement are procedures of handling emergencies, transfer of aircraft using technical systems such as Controller Pilot Data Link and Automatic Dependent Surveillance Contract as well as standard separation between aircraft compliant with that of the adjacent state.”

According to a statement by the agency on Sunday, the two states also discussed the possibility of a partnership which would enable NAMA undertake the training of some of its operational personnel at the Ghana Civil Aviation Academy by virtue of its affiliation with renowned training institutions globally.

The Managing Director, NAMA, Capt. Fola Akinkuotu, said as a requirement of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the meeting with Ghana was critical as it would enhance operational synergy and seamlessness, making for fewer gaps in air traffic management between the two adjacent states.

Is it all over for Jeremy Meeks and his Topshop heiress?

Friends of Sir Philip Green’s daughter Chloe were speculating last night that her relationship with her ‘hot felon’ lover Jeremy Meeks is over – after he missed their baby son’s first birthday.

An Instagram friend posted a video last week showing Ms Green, 28, enjoying a party for their son Jayden at a ball pit in Monaco with friends.

Meeks – who attracted the ‘hot felon’ nickname in 2014 after his police mugshot went viral following his arrest for firearms possession – was in Los Angeles.

Only two weeks ago, Meeks, 35, was forced to deny a split after he was photographed arm-in-arm with Romanian-born model Andreea Sasu at two events during the Cannes film festival.

Meeks and Ms Green met in Cannes in 2017 and reportedly became engaged in 2018.

In February this year, she cut short a holiday in Dubai and returned home to Monaco after the pair argued at Dubai’s upmarket Cavalli Club.

Then in March there were reports that the relationship was on the rocks after Ms Green appeared to ignore Meeks’s gushing online birthday wishes in which he described her as ‘the most amazing person I’ve ever met’, adding: ‘There’s NO ONE else I’d rather spend the rest of my life with.’

Meeks, who has a ten-year-old son, Jeremy Jr, from his previous marriage, was signed up by a modelling agency while serving a 27-month sentence and made his catwalk debut during New York Fashion Week in February 2017.

Last night, Ms Green told the MoS: ‘The information you have is untrue.’ But she declined to confirm or deny that she remains in a relationship with Meeks.

Photo: Pastor impregnates 16-year-old orphan

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), has arrested a 48–year-old pastor in Abuja for alleged r-pe and sexual exploitation of a 16-year-old orphan.

NAPTIP’s Head, Press, and Public Relations Unit, Stella Nezan, said in Abuja.

Nezan alleged that the suspect, a pastor in the Mountain of Fire and Miracle Church (MFM), Gwarimpa branch, had also impregnated the teenager.

She said that the suspect, who volunteered to provide shelter for the girl and deliver her from evil spirit after she had been accused of witchcraft, took advantage of the situation.

“NAPTIP operatives effected arrest of one pastor with MFM in Gwarimpa, Abuja, for r-pe, sexual molestation and impregnating a 16-year-old orphan.

“The suspect from Nsukka in Enugu State was said to have volunteered to provide shelter and also conduct deliverance on the girl after she lost her parents and was accused of witchcraft.

“But he took advantage of the vulnerability of the innocent girl and repeatedly devoured her sexually,” she said.

Nezan said that the victim, a Junior Secondary School (JSS) student in Abuja had lived with the pastor, a widower, and his daughter for sometimes before the sexual exploitation started.

The suspect was said to have confessed to committing the crimes “only twice” and blamed it on the devil.

“The victim, a JSS2 student of one of the government schools in Abuja, suddenly dropped out of school and was in dire need of accommodation shortly after the death of her parents in 2018.

“Investigation revealed that the pastor was living with his daughter in the same compound with the victim’s deceased parents in Karmo, a suburb of Abuja, and volunteered to assist her in her education.

“According to the victim, after the first year of their living together, the pastor started making love advances toward her, an action she constantly resisted.

“She narrated that the first time the pastor r-ped her was in March, after her birthday outing,” Nezan said.

She added that the pastor continued to rape her afterwards and it resulted in pregnancy.

“During interrogation, the pastor confessed to sexually abusing the girl only twice and attributing the evil act to the devil,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Director General of NAPTIP, Ms. Julie Okah-Donli, has described the action of the suspect as the highest form of wickedness against a fellow human being.

Okah-Donli promised that the case would be diligently prosecuted in order to secure justice for the victim.

New study reveals you can drink up to 25 cups of coffee a day without causing heart problems

Coffee addicts rejoice – even drinking 25 cups a day is not bad for your heart, say scientists.

Previous studies have suggested the drink can stiffen arteries, with caffeine lovers often advised to cut down on their consumption.

But a study of more than 8,000 people across the UK found that drinking an average of five cups a day was actually no worse for their arteries than drinking less than a cup a day.

The research, which was part-funded by the British Heart Foundation, is being presented at the British Cardiovascular Society Conference in Manchester.

Experts from Queen Mary University of London divided 8,412 participants into three groups for their study.

The first group was made up of participants who drink less than one cup of coffee a day, the second contained those who drink between one and three cups a day, and the third was made up of people who drink more than three.

Some people drank up to 25 cups a day in the latter group – but the average was five cups a day.

Researchers found even those drinking the higher daily amounts were no more likely to have stiffening of arteries than those who drank less than one cup a day.
