Every Nigerian living in Kano is an indigene, no discrimination - Emir Sanusi II

The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II on Sunday declared that there is nothing like non-indigeneship in Kano, insisting that everybody residing in the state is a bonafide indigene irrespective of his ethnic, cultural and religious background.

The Emir stated this during the 10th anniversary/Ofala 2019 festival of Eze Ndigbo Kano, His Royal Highness, Chief (Dr.) Boniface Ibekwe, held at Ado Bayero Square, Sabon Gari.

“The wealth and prosperity of Kano is based on its ability as a cosmopolitan city. Right things to make Nigeria great.

“For us in Kano, whether you are Nupe, Yoruba, Igbo, Kanuri, Muslim, Christian, if you identify yourself as a son of Kano, you are from Kano.

“Religion of Islam expressly prohibit tribalism. The Qu’aran is very clear on this issues. Allah says all mankind were created from one man and one woman (Adam and Eve). We made you as a people from different tribes so that you can recognize each other. The best of all among you is he who fears God most” he said.

Bloody Sunday! Mother, 2 children, military officer, 20 others reportedly killed in Agatu

A woman, her two children, a retired military personnel and 20 others were feared dead in an early morning attack on Okokolo community by armed youths and militia from Abugbe village all in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, yesterday.

Vanguard gathered from sources in the troubled communities that the age-long crisis, centred on the ownership of ponds in the fishing communities, left many others including health personnel with bullet wounds, while several houses were also razed in Okokolo village.

According to the source, the latest attack came less than 24 hours after the signing of a peace accord by the feuding communities to put an end to the lingering feud.

The source said: “Just when we thought that peace was returning to these communities that have been engaged in bloody conflicts, early this morning(yesterday), when majority of the people of Okokolo had gone to church, armed youths from Abugbe supported by a gang of militia stormed Okokolo, shooting sporadically and killing any person in sight.

“The people ran for their lives, but the invaders chased them and killed anyone they caught up with.

They did not stop there, but set houses and other property ablaze, after which they retreated.

“As we speak, some of the houses and huts are still on fire while the entire village has been deserted. So far we have been able to recover 12 corpses including a mother and her two children and a retired WO II (names withheld). But we are yet to locate about 11 persons and we fear that they must have been killed. But the search is ongoing.

“Our worry is that this crisis is being propelled by prominent people, who are not willing and ready to bring it to an end despite all the peace efforts.

“Several of the wounded have also been rushed to public and private hospitals in Agatu and Apa Local Government areas.”

Contacted, the Caretaker Chairman Agatu council, Mr. Usman Alilu, said he had directed soldiers to the area to deal decisively with the situation and arrest the masterminds. “We are on top of the situation,” he said.

Suicide should be decriminalised in Nigeria, Consultant Psychiatrist urges Federal Government

A Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Raphael Ogbolu, on Sunday urged the Federal Government not to criminalise cases of suicide as some other nations of the world had done.

Ogbolu, a Consultant in the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos, made the call on Sunday at a Day Seminar/Rally held at the Saint John Ambulance Brigade, Nigerian Railway Compound, Ebute-Meta, Lagos.

Responding to questions from participants on why it was still a criminal offence to commit suicide in Nigeria, the psychiatrist decried the rising cases of suicides across the country.

“The government is in a better position to explain why suicide has not been decriminalised as obtained in other parts of the world,” he said.

Ogbolu, however, commended the Federal Government for restricting the sales and banning the production of small packs of Sniper, a chemical substance mostly being used to commit suicide in the country.

According to him, statistics made available by the World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that the number of people who committed suicide increased from 6.5 per cent in 2012 to 9.9 per cent in 2015.

He said that an average of about one case of suicide takes place every month.

Ogbolu said increase in the number of people who committed suicide brought about the concern that informed the decision to drive the process against the increase.

According to him, figures of suicide cases is underestimated because most cases of suicide are not reported.

The medical practitioner said research had shown that cases of suicide were attributed to broken relationships, drug abuse, and depression.

He said that most of the cases of suicide occurred within the academic circles due to self-esteem and sour relationships.

Ogbolu said that in some cases, female students who were sexually abused committed suicide due to self-esteem.

The consultant said that symptoms of people who committed suicide included sudden change of attitude, loneliness and looking depressed.

According to him, “When such symptoms are noticed, it’s better to counsel such persons before it gets out of hand,” he advised.

Having more fat on legs than stomach protects women from heart disease- new study

Having more fat on legs compared with the stomach protects postmenopausal women from heart disease, a study says.

Women of a healthy weight with the highest risk of stroke or heart disease had the most belly fat and the least hip and thigh fat, the European Heart Journal research found.

The scientists said "apple-shaped" women should try to lose belly fat and become more "pear-shaped".

The research followed 2,600 women who were a healthy weight - with a body mass index (BMI) of between 18 and 25 - over 18 years.

They were all taking part in a major US study, the Women's Health Initiative, which began in the mid-1990s, and had regular scans to check fat, muscle and bone density.

The study found "apple-shaped" women, with more fat around the belly, had a more than threefold increased cardiovascular disease risk compared with those who were "pear-shaped", with fat around the hips and thighs.

Atiku sues Buhari’s aide Lauretta Onochie for libel

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general elections, Atiku Abubakar, has sued the Special Assistant on Social Media to President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, for her alleged libelous tweet via her twitter handle on May 7, 2019.

In the suit filed on June 26, 2019 before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by his lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), Atiku claimed Onochie alleged in her post, that he was on the watch list of security operatives in the United Arab Emirates and had traveled to shop for terrorists in the Middle East.

In a supporting affidavit, Atiku, a former Vice President, denied the allegation contained in the said tweet and stated that the tweet was “politically orchestrated” “solely to cause maximum damage” to his “high reputation.”

Atiku stated that: “To say that the claimant is shopping for terrorists knowing same to be untrue and without any foundation is not only dishonest and reckless but is calculated and politically designed to instigate security agents against him not only in the UAE but across the world,” he stated in his statement of claim accompanying the suit.

In a statement of claim, Atiku said he had in a May 14, 2019 letter, demanded an apology, retraction, and payment of N500m compensation from Onochie “to assuage” the damage allegedly caused him by her social media post.

Atiku stated that even when he threatened to sue her should she fail to accede to the demand within 48 hours, Onochie was unmoved by his demand letter, Atiku noted that rather than show “remorse by retracting her earlier publication”, she further, on May 20, made “another derogatory publication and also published same globally online in the social and other print media” against his person.

Clashes as Hong Kong marks handover anniversary

Police in Hong Kong have clashed with protesters marking the anniversary of its handover from UK to Chinese rule.

In chaotic scenes on Monday, police used pepper spray and batons to contain protesters outside a venue hosting an annual flag-raising ceremony.

A small group of protesters also smashed into the government building.

This is the latest in a series of protests against a controversial bill that would allow extraditions to mainland China.

The government has agreed to suspend it indefinitely, but the rallies continue and Chief Executive Carrie Lam is facing ongoing calls to resign.

Pro-democracy events are held every year to mark the handover. Large crowds are expected to attend a march and rally later on Monday, but police are now urging the organisers to shorten or cancel the event over safety concerns.

INEC deputy director bags six years in jail for receiving N45m Diezani bribe

Justice Yusuf Birnin-Kudu of Jigawa State High Court sitting in Gumel, has sentenced a Deputy Director of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Auwal Jibrin, to six years in jail for unlawful enrichment and gratification.

He was convicted alongside one Garba Ismaila who bagged seven years in jail for benefiting from the $115.010m largesse of a former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, in the run-up to the 2015 presidential election.

The two men were sentenced on Friday following their prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Kano zonal office.

Acting EFCC spokesman, Tony Orilade, who disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, said the two convicts received N45m out of the N250m disbursed in Jigawa State to influence the outcome of the 2015 elections.

Jibrin and Ismaila had pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the six and seven counts against them respectively, thereby setting the stage for full trial during which the prosecution presented five witnesses and tendered 20 exhibits against them.

Delivering judgment, Justice Birnin-Kudu held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt “all the elements and facts of the case as contained in the charge and the testimonies of prosecution witnesses and exhibits tendered.”

He added that the defence team failed to counter the evidence presented by the prosecution through its witnesses.

The court thus found the first defendant guilty as charged on count two, while the second defendant was found guilty on counts one and three.

The court, however, discharged them on counts four, five and six.

The judge further ordered the final forfeiture of the recovered monies and property attached to the investigation with the exception of a three-bedroom flat attached at No. 1 Hadejia  Road, Birnin Kudu , Jigawa State.

Sudan’s military accused of killing seven protesters

Seven persons were killed Sunday as tens of thousands of protesters in Sudan took to the streets to demand civilian rule.

It was the first mass rally since a bloody crackdown on demonstrators — a show of street power despite heavy troop deployments by the ruling generals.

The “million-man” march had been seen as a test for protest organisers after their push for civilian rule was hit by the June 3 raid on a Khartoum protest camp and a subsequent internet blackout that curbed their ability to mobilise support.

Dozens of demonstrators were killed and hundreds wounded when armed men in military fatigues stormed the sit-in on June 3 outside army headquarters, shooting and beating protesters who had camped there since April 6.

On Sunday, police fired tear gas on protesters approaching the presidential palace after organisers called for a march on the building that houses offices of the ruling transitional military council.

“We call on our revolutionary people in the capital to go to the republican palace… to seek justice for the martyrs and for an unconditional transfer of power to civilians,” the Sudanese Professionals Association that first launched protests against now ousted ruler Omar al-Bashir said on Twitter.

Police also fired tear gas at protesters in the northern Khartoum district of Bahri and in Mamura and Arkweit, in the capital’s east, as thousands of protesters chanted “Civilian rule! Civilian rule!”, witnesses said.

“We’re fed up with the military. For decades this country has been ruled by the military. It didn’t work and it will not work,” said protester Nada Adel, 28.

“Despite what they did at the sit-in, despite the people they killed… the revolution will not die in the hearts of the youth.”

Elsewhere, security forces used tear gas to disperse protests in the capital’s twin city of Omdurman and the eastern town of Gadaref.

Late on Sunday the official SUNA news agency quoting a health ministry official said “seven were killed” in the protests, without elaborating how they died or who they were.

It said that another 181 people were wounded, including 27 with bullets.

Ivanka Trump gets 'death stare' from world leader as she tries to join G20 chat

Ivanka Trump gets 'death stare' from world leader as she tries to join G20 chat

Donald Trump has let his daughter stand in for him at international events around the world.

But at the G20 summit, international critics who accuse the US President of nepotism took unbridled glee in watching Ivanka Trump falter in the presence of powerful world leaders.

America's 'first daughter,' was caught on camera attempting to join a conversation with UK Prime Minister Theresa May , French president Emmanuel Macron, and Canadian PM Justin Trudeau.

The clip released by the French Government captured the whole exchange.

But no words were required from International Monetary Fund director Christine Lagarde, whose facial reactions to Trump's attempt at international diplomacy instead went viral.

In the 19 seconds of footage from the G20 summit in Osaka released by the Elysée Palace, Macron can be heard saying finishing a sentence about "social justice".

Trump interjects with either "it's on," or "it's all."

May replies to Macron: "As soon as you start talking about the economic aspect a lot of people start listening who wouldn't otherwise listen."

"Start listening," echoes Trump.

"And same with the defence side, I think, in terms of the whole sort of..." she offers, gesturing with her hands before trailing off.

Trump finishes, smiling and nodding: "Being very male-dominated."

As Trump speaks, Lagarde can be seen frowning and glancing at Trudeau.

The clip of the exchange attracted a widespread reaction.

High profile New York congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez led criticism of Trump's presence at the summit, highlighting that the president's daughter had no reason to be at the important event.

She tweeted: "It may be shocking to some, but being someone’s daughter actually isn’t a career qualification.

"It hurts our diplomatic standing when the President phones it in & the world moves on.
