Labour unions in the public service on Monday said they had started mobilising workers against the delay by the Federal Government to implement the new minimum wage signed into law on April 18.

The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II on Sunday declared that there is nothing like non-indigeneship in Kano, insisting that everybody residing in the state is a bonafide indigene irrespective of his ethnic, cultural and religious background.
The Emir stated this during the 10th anniversary/Ofala 2019 festival of Eze Ndigbo Kano, His Royal Highness, Chief (Dr.) Boniface Ibekwe, held at Ado Bayero Square, Sabon Gari.
“The wealth and prosperity of Kano is based on its ability as a cosmopolitan city. Right things to make Nigeria great.
“For us in Kano, whether you are Nupe, Yoruba, Igbo, Kanuri, Muslim, Christian, if you identify yourself as a son of Kano, you are from Kano.
“Religion of Islam expressly prohibit tribalism. The Qu’aran is very clear on this issues. Allah says all mankind were created from one man and one woman (Adam and Eve). We made you as a people from different tribes so that you can recognize each other. The best of all among you is he who fears God most” he said.
A woman, her two children, a retired military personnel and 20 others were feared dead in an early morning attack on Okokolo community by armed youths and militia from Abugbe village all in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, yesterday.
Vanguard gathered from sources in the troubled communities that the age-long crisis, centred on the ownership of ponds in the fishing communities, left many others including health personnel with bullet wounds, while several houses were also razed in Okokolo village.
According to the source, the latest attack came less than 24 hours after the signing of a peace accord by the feuding communities to put an end to the lingering feud.
The source said: “Just when we thought that peace was returning to these communities that have been engaged in bloody conflicts, early this morning(yesterday), when majority of the people of Okokolo had gone to church, armed youths from Abugbe supported by a gang of militia stormed Okokolo, shooting sporadically and killing any person in sight.
“The people ran for their lives, but the invaders chased them and killed anyone they caught up with.
They did not stop there, but set houses and other property ablaze, after which they retreated.
“As we speak, some of the houses and huts are still on fire while the entire village has been deserted. So far we have been able to recover 12 corpses including a mother and her two children and a retired WO II (names withheld). But we are yet to locate about 11 persons and we fear that they must have been killed. But the search is ongoing.
“Our worry is that this crisis is being propelled by prominent people, who are not willing and ready to bring it to an end despite all the peace efforts.
“Several of the wounded have also been rushed to public and private hospitals in Agatu and Apa Local Government areas.”
Contacted, the Caretaker Chairman Agatu council, Mr. Usman Alilu, said he had directed soldiers to the area to deal decisively with the situation and arrest the masterminds. “We are on top of the situation,” he said.
A Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Raphael Ogbolu, on Sunday urged the Federal Government not to criminalise cases of suicide as some other nations of the world had done.
Ogbolu, a Consultant in the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos, made the call on Sunday at a Day Seminar/Rally held at the Saint John Ambulance Brigade, Nigerian Railway Compound, Ebute-Meta, Lagos.
Responding to questions from participants on why it was still a criminal offence to commit suicide in Nigeria, the psychiatrist decried the rising cases of suicides across the country.
“The government is in a better position to explain why suicide has not been decriminalised as obtained in other parts of the world,” he said.
Ogbolu, however, commended the Federal Government for restricting the sales and banning the production of small packs of Sniper, a chemical substance mostly being used to commit suicide in the country.
According to him, statistics made available by the World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that the number of people who committed suicide increased from 6.5 per cent in 2012 to 9.9 per cent in 2015.
He said that an average of about one case of suicide takes place every month.
Ogbolu said increase in the number of people who committed suicide brought about the concern that informed the decision to drive the process against the increase.
According to him, figures of suicide cases is underestimated because most cases of suicide are not reported.
The medical practitioner said research had shown that cases of suicide were attributed to broken relationships, drug abuse, and depression.
He said that most of the cases of suicide occurred within the academic circles due to self-esteem and sour relationships.
Ogbolu said that in some cases, female students who were sexually abused committed suicide due to self-esteem.
The consultant said that symptoms of people who committed suicide included sudden change of attitude, loneliness and looking depressed.
According to him, “When such symptoms are noticed, it’s better to counsel such persons before it gets out of hand,” he advised.
Having more fat on legs compared with the stomach protects postmenopausal women from heart disease, a study says.
Women of a healthy weight with the highest risk of stroke or heart disease had the most belly fat and the least hip and thigh fat, the European Heart Journal research found.
The scientists said "apple-shaped" women should try to lose belly fat and become more "pear-shaped".
The research followed 2,600 women who were a healthy weight - with a body mass index (BMI) of between 18 and 25 - over 18 years.
They were all taking part in a major US study, the Women's Health Initiative, which began in the mid-1990s, and had regular scans to check fat, muscle and bone density.
The study found "apple-shaped" women, with more fat around the belly, had a more than threefold increased cardiovascular disease risk compared with those who were "pear-shaped", with fat around the hips and thighs.

In a statement of claim, Atiku said he had in a May 14, 2019 letter, demanded an apology, retraction, and payment of N500m compensation from Onochie “to assuage” the damage allegedly caused him by her social media post.
Atiku stated that even when he threatened to sue her should she fail to accede to the demand within 48 hours, Onochie was unmoved by his demand letter, Atiku noted that rather than show “remorse by retracting her earlier publication”, she further, on May 20, made “another derogatory publication and also published same globally online in the social and other print media” against his person.
