A federal lawmaker from Akwa Ibom State, Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo, has recruited 50 people to serve as personal aides, Premium Times reports.
Akwa Ibom, despite huge oil wealth, is one of the states with the highest unemployment rates in Nigeria.
Employing 50 people in a single move by a lawmaker is seen as record-breaking in the state.
Mr Ukpong-Udo, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), represents Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Abuja.
He is a fresh lawmaker.
The position of the aides ranges from special assistant on special duties, community relations, community development, and logistics duties, to special assistant on women matters, protocol, and local legislative matters.
Also included are four media aides.
Members of the House of Representatives are permitted to employ only five statutory aides.
Therefore, 45, out of the 50 aides, would be getting their salary and allowance from the lawmaker’s pocket.
One of the aides, Imowo Mbede, told Premium Times Wednesday that the appointment of that number of aides was the lawmaker’s way of “empowering” his constituents.
“It’s basically an empowerment thing,” said Mr Mbede, an executive assistant to Mr Ukpong-Udo.
“A good number of them are from all the wards in the two local government areas (Ikono and Ini), while others are from outside the federal constituency.”
Mr Mbede said the appointment is to run for a year, after which a new set of persons would be appointed as a replacement.
All the 50 aides are said to have direct access to Mr Ukpong-Udo and are to serve as his eyes and ears in the local communities.
The announcement of the appointment in June, prompted a debate in Akwa Ibom, with some people wondering why such a large number of aides was needed.
“Ukpong-Udo is in a hurry to do good to as many persons as he possibly can,” one of the media aides to the lawmaker said in an article he wrote as a response to the criticism of the appointment.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission has secured the conviction of a former Director-General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, Mr John Ayoade Shamonda, after being found guilty of using part of the money meant for the Federal Government project to fund sallah welfare package.
A statement from the spokesperson for the ICPC, Rasheedat Okoduwa, said Shamonda was arraigned before Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court 14 sitting in Apo, Abuja, on 10 counts bordering on knowingly making false statement and virement without approval.
The statement added that the offences were contrary to and punishable under sections 16; 17(1)(c) and 22(5) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.
It stated, “During the trial, the prosecution presented seven witnesses while 26 documents were admitted as exhibits. The court was also told that Shamonda, while being the DG of NIHSA, had written to the then Minister of Water Resources, Mrs Sarah Ochekpe, requesting N603m for the rehabilitation and replacement of damaged hydrological equipment across the country following the devastating incident of flooding in 2012.
“Furthermore, the court was informed that the former DG in disbursing the money did not follow the ‘procurement plan’ for which the money was released. Instead, Shamonda approved that N2, 767, 500.00 be used for “Sallah welfare package” which was paid to all the members of staff of the agency. Also, he spent N25, 749, 390.60 on a national stakeholders’ workshop.”
The ICPC said the convict also purchased two Toyota Prado jeeps and two Hiace buses totalling the sum of N49.15m from the sum.
R&B singer R Kelly has been arrested on s*x trafficking charges, according to American law officials. The 52-year old was arrested in Chicago on Thursday night on 13 federal sex crime charges, and was expected to be taken to New York, according to officials.
US attorney spokesman Joseph Fitzpatrick said that the indictment against Kelly handed down in federal court for the northern district of Illinois also contained charges that revolve around child p*rnography and obstruction of justice.
“The counts include child p*rn, enticement of a minor and obstruction of justice,” Fitzpatrick said, adding that further details would be released later Friday.
The arrest was the second time this year that Kelly has been taken into custody in Chicago on s*x charges.

A two-year-old boy has died after he slipped out of his mother's hand and ran into an oncoming van.
The toddler, identified as Elmer Jeremias Torres, was rushed to hospital with severe injuries but died hours later.
The horrifying moment happened on the streets of Choloma, in the Honduran department of Cortés, Central America, and was caught on CCTV.
Footage showed the mother trying to get into a taxi with Elmer while holding shopping bags.
As she let go of the boy's hand to put the shopping down, he wandered off behind the taxi and ran onto the road.
The mother attempted to chase after him but did not realise the small van that was passing at speed.
The toddler was dragged under the wheels along the road for a few seconds before the driver realised what had happened.
It is believed the boy was taken to hospital alive but later died from his injuries.
The van driver was arrested and police have now launched an investigation into the incident.
Apostle Suleman, the General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries, has deleted a false tweet he made against herdsmen concerning the new Nigerian passport.
Suleman, on Thursday posted a tweet with an image partly showing herdsmen pantheon on the New Nigerian International passport.
According to him, he claimed the pages of the passport were littered with the pantheon of herdsmen.
Shortly after his claim, a twitter user, Oluwasegun Olajuwan, drew his attention to the false information on his tweet.
Olajuwan said; “With due respect Apst, practically all tribes are represented on the pages of this passport, cattle farming is part of us for long.Now politicians made it to bring divisions amongst us.Sir pls don’t let them use STRONG men of God like u to bring confusion. You are a ROLE MODEL.”
Suleman responded querying: “And herdsmen are part of us too?you were respectful in ur submission that’s why I won’t block u..is cattle rearing agriculture? ..is farming a major thing in ibo land?how can u see something so crystal clear on the passport and still be defensive of evil?
“I have lost members in church who were killed by herdsmen..may you not experience same in Jesus name..so you know why a few of us are fighting the agenda..when I tweeted how arrested herdsmen were released,did u retreat?.na dem,” he added.
While the conversation was on, another Twitter user asked if cattle rearing is no longer agriculture.

It is no longer news that the National Treasurer for Lagos chapter of the National Road Union Transport Workers, Musiliu Akinsanya, better known as MC Oluomo, lost his bid to succeed the outgoing chairman of Lagos State chapter, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede.
What is not known is that Agbede was instrumental in the emergence of Michael Odugunle as the new chairman of the Lagos union.
According to an insider, Agbede worked against the Oluomo’s bid to become the next Lagos NURTW chairman.
Akinsanya, a close ally of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, has been a major contender for the plum job until he was shocked by Agbede’s move, fielding his own preferred successor at the just concluded election.
While MC Oluomo is close to the National Chairman of the ruling party, Agbede is a strong supporter of the immediate past Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode.
Oluomo was disappointed after losing the election.
Seven family members, including husband and wife, have been found dead in Elele in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Daily Sun gathered that the tragic incident occurred in their apartment within an estate known as ‘Too Much Money’ in the town.
One of the victims’ neighbours who confirmed the incident via the telephone, said they woke up in the morning of yesterday and noticed that the neighbour’s house was still locked.
The source, who did not want his name mention, said they decided to force the main gate to the compound open and observed that the car belonging to the father, a known commercial driver in the area, was still parked and none of the children was seen outside.
According to the source, neighbours within the estate said they saw the man the last time when he was trying to put on his generator set, which they suspected might be the cause of their death.
It was further gathered that the generator set was seen facing their door.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), has confirmed the incident to journalists.
Omoni said a preliminary investigation showed that the family died as a result of smoke from the generator set, adding that investigation was still on to see if the disaster was sabotage.
He disclosed further that the bodies had been deposited at the mortuary for further investigation, adding that at the end of the findings, anyone found culpable would face the law.
