Shiites’ protest: Army begins sting operation in Abuja

The Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army has begun sting operation in the Federal Capital Territory to stop violent protests by the members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also known as the Shiites.

Punch correspondent learnt that the operation, which would involve going after the perceived sponsors of the protests, would also look into how the protesters got their weapons and how many weapons were still in their possession.

The Shiites’ protests had turned bloody during the week, leading to two policemen sustaining serious injuries and many vehicles burnt, particularly within the National Assembly premises.

Sources at the Guards Brigade told a Punch correspondent on Friday the army would not fold its arms and allow the Shiites overrun the FCT, adding that it was careful in applying “lethal force” on the protesters in the face of allegations of human right abuses.

A top army source said, “We know what to do. We have a sting operation in place and we are putting measures on the ground to contain the protests.

“The military has deployed in strategic areas and we are monitoring how the protesters got their weapons.”

The Guards Brigade Commander, Brig.-Gen Umar Musa, had said last Sunday it had developed strategies to checkmate protests by the Shi’ites, noting that such outings were also worrisome to residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Musa added that the frequent activities of the Shiites were bringing discomfort to the FCT and must be adequately tackled.

He had spoken in Keffi, Nasarawa State, at the 177 Guards Battalion.

“The incessant protests by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria are becoming worrisome to Abuja residents; but the brigade and the Nigeria Police Force have put more strategies in place to avoid any protest from escalating into violence,” he had said.

At least 26 dead as gunmen storm Somali hotel all night

The death toll from Somalia's Kismayo hotel attack rose to 26 on Saturday with victims including Kenyans, Americans, a Briton, a Canadian and Tanzanians.

A presidential candidate for upcoming regional elections was also killed in the attack, carried out by al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab, Jubbaland President Ahmed Mohamed said in a statement.

More than 50 people were also wounded. Police in Kismayo earlier put the toll at 13.

Somalia's security forces ended the overnight attack by the group in the southern port city after an hours-long siege.

"The operation is over. The four attackers were shot dead," police officer Major Mohamed Abdi told Reuters news agency.

Al-Shabab members stormed the hotel after detonating a car bomb on Friday while local elders and legislators met to discuss approaching regional elections.

Politicians and journalists were among the dead.

"The operation was concluded at 7am... These are the prominent people. The death toll is sure to rise," local elder Ahmed Abdulle said.

Fear God! Don’t label Pa Fasoronti’s daughter’ killers as armed robbers, Omokri warns Adesina

A former presidential aide, Reno Omokri has cautioned the Special Advicer on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, Femi Adesina, not to label the killers of Pa Fasoronti’s daughter as armed rubbers but herdsmen.

Femi Adesina, while delivering President Buhari’s message of condolence to the Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti over the death of his daughter, stated that the Ondo police had described the killers of Mrs Funke Olakunrin as armed robbers.

He said, “President Muhammadu Buhari condoles with Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, whose daughter, Mrs Funke Olakunrin was killed along Ondo-Ore road by those described as armed robbers by Ondo Police Command. He prays God to give Pa Fasoranti fortitude to bear the loss”.

However, Reno Omokri took an exception to the statement delivered by Femi Adesina, as he took to Twitter to express his displeasure with the armed robbers’ tag.

He said: “Dear Femi Adesina, those who were there said herdsmen killed Pa Fasoranti, the Yoruba leader’s, daughter. But you, sitting in your AC office in Abuja, claim it is armed robbers because the herdsmen are from the same tribe as your boss. Femi, fear God.”

EFCC arraigns lawyer over land fraud in Ilorin

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ilorin Zonal office, has arraigned a legal practitioner, Akeem Jimoh, before a Kwara State High Court sitting on a one count bordering on obtaining money under false pretence.

Jimoh was arraigned before the court presided by Justice Mahmood Abdulgafar.

The accused person was alleged by the EFCC to have received various sums of money under the pretence of helping people to buy land within Ilorin metropolis but diverted the funds for personal use.

The charge reads, “That you, Akeem Jimoh, sometime in August 2011 in Ilorin, within the jurisdiction of the honourable court with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N150,000 from one Mr Ogunleye Benjamin for a plot of land which you knew to be false.”

The offence, according to the prosecution, was punishable under section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other fraud Related Offences Act No.14 of 2006.

When the charge was read to him in court, Jimoh pleaded not guilty to the accusation.

Defence counsel, V. O. Aluko, who led five other lawyers however, moved an oral application for bail pending the hearing of the case.

He argued that the offence allegedly committed by the accused lawyer was open to bail.

But prosecuting lawyer, Sesan Ola, opposed the oral application for bail, insisting that the proper bail application had yet to be filed before the court.

Ola urged the presiding judge to remand the accused person in prison custody and ordered an accelerated hearing of the matter.

Justice Abdulgafar, however, overruled the oral application for bail and ordered that the accused person be remanded in the custody of the EFCC.

The case has been adjourned till July 15, 2019 for hearing of the bail application.

'Prince Harry has turned against the media again'

Prince Harry is becoming “suspicious and unfriendly towards the media,” according to a former royal editor.

Tim Ewart, who worked for ITV and covered the royals for nearly a decade until 2017, said that when Harry first began to carry out duties, he was cautious and on occasion, hostile of the press.

Speaking on Yahoo UK’s ‘The Royal Box,’ he said: “He [Harry] would turn his back to the cameras, he wouldn’t respond, but I think gradually that greatly improved and relations became much, much more relaxed.”

Ewart recalls Harry’s first official trip representing the Queen in the Caribbean in 2012, when he was at his most relaxed and made everybody laugh when he won a race against Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.

But in recent months, he says the Duke of Sussex has “turned against the media again big time.”

Ewart continues: “It’s simply because of what he perceives as media treatment of Meghan.

“He perceives it as being hostile, unfair, unreasonable, bordering in his mind, on racist.”

PDP forced Adeleke to contest for Osun governorship election- Davido' dad

Ademola Adeleke, the People’s Democratic Party governorship candidate for the Osun State governorship candidate, was coerced to contest in the September 2018 election, his brother Deji Adeleke said.

“Senator Ademola Nurudeen Adeleke, had no intention to contest the Governorship Election in the first place,” Deji Adeleke said in a statement.

Rasheed Olawale, a spokesman for Ademola Adeleke, confirmed to The Guardian that statement originated from the elder Adeleke.

Deji said the PDP candidate “was invited and prevailed upon by the party leadership and party elders to contest” for the September 2018 election.

“He and his family accepted most reluctantly after receiving assurances and promises that were never kept.”

Deji is reacting to the automatic ticket the PDP are offering Ademola to re-contest in 2022 after he finally lost the election petition to the All Progressives Congress rival Gboyega Oyetola.

He rejected the automatic ticket for his brother stating that Ademola deserves to be “given a break”.

He further urged the party to administer a “transparent primary elections” for all elective positions, including the ticket for the “position of governor of the state.”

Wendy Williams reveals Meghan wanted to work for her

Meghan Markle once tried to get hired as a model on The Wendy Williams Show, according to the host, but she didn't get the job.

Wendy, 54, was talking about the Duchess of Sussex's controversial Wimbledon photo ban on Wednesday's episode of The Wendy Williams Show when she shared that the former actress had applied to work on the talk show.

'She came here to be on one of our models. We do the fashion — things like that,' the host explained. 'This was before she met the man — the redhead — Harry, but Meghan knows Wendy's show, Meghan wanted to work here.'

The show has been on for 11 years, and Meghan likely applied for the job before she landed her role on Suits, which premiered in 2011.

Although the revelation is news to many, it actually wasn't the first time Wendy has referenced Meghan's attempt to work for her before her acting career took off.

Back in February, the host mentioned the Duchess of Sussex had applied for a job on the show while talking to actress AnnaLynne McCord about the royal's small roll on the first episode of the CW's 90210 reboot.
