Simona Halep beats Serena Williams to win her first Wimbledon title

Simona Halep won her first Wimbledon title and crushed Serena Williams' latest bid for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam success with a devastating 56-minute display of athleticism.

The Romanian won 6-2 6-2 in front of an incredulous Centre Court, running after everything the American threw at her.

"It was my best match," the 27-year-old said after her second Grand Slam title following her 2018 French Open success.

For 37-year-old Williams, it was a third major final defeat in 12 months.

"She played out of her mind, it was a little bit deer in the headlights for me," she said.

President Trump axed Iran deal to spite Obama

Donald Trump abandoned the Iran nuclear deal as an act of ‘diplomatic vandalism’ to spite his predecessor Barack Obama, Britain’s Ambassador to Washington wrote in a bombshell memo to Downing Street.

Sir Kim Darroch’s claim – made after Boris Johnson made a doomed trip to the White House to change the President’s mind – is revealed in leaked cables and briefing notes which led to Sir Kim’s resignation last week.

The new revelation comes after an extraordinary row over the freedom of the press blew up this weekend, with Mr Johnson and leadership rival Jeremy Hunt leading the condemnation of Scotland Yard over its threats to prosecute this newspaper.

Dad eaten alive by deadly parasite 48 hours after family beach trip

A dad has been eaten alive by a deadly parasite 48 hours after a family beach trip - in the same area a schoolgirl was also left fighting for her life from the infection.

Dave Bennett, from Memphis, was visiting daughter Cheryl Bennett Wiygul in Destin, Florida, when they decided to head to the beach and do various water sports as they all soaked up the sunshine.

But 12 hours after being in the water, cancer-stricken Dave woke up with a fever, chills and some cramping.

His health began to rapidly deteriorate and he was taken to hospital where they discovered a "terribly swollen black spot on his back".

He was pronounced dead within hours and lab results later confirmed he had contacted necrotizing fasciitis - also known as flesh eating bacteria.

Grief-stricken daughter Cheryl has now recalled the harrowing 48 hours that changed her life forever and vowed: "I don’t want this to happen to anyone else."

"This is so raw and personal to me that I did not want to post about it, she said. "But if I can help one person, then it is worth it.

"There is not enough education out there about the bacteria in the water.

"There needs to be signs posted at every beach, every city and state park, and every bayou stating that 'due to naturally occurring bacteria in the water people with open wounds or compromised immune systems should not enter'".

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane loses brother

Real Madrid players have held a minute's silence for the brother of manager Zinedine Zidane, who has died. Zidane left the club's pre-season training camp in Canada this week, with the club only saying it was for personal reasons.

But now it has emerged the French legend's brother Farid, 54, has passed away after being struck down by cancer. And this morning, the squad and backroom staff left in Montreal stood together to pay their own tribute.

Zidane had asked to leave the squad on Friday when he was informed his brother had been taken ill.

And his son, Luca Zidane, who had only just joined Racing Santander on loan, also requested he be allowed to leave his new club to be with his family. It is believed Farid passed away early this morning surrounded by his family.

Man confronted by Meghan Markle's bodyguard for 'taking selfie' breaks silence

A Wimbledon spectator who was accused of invading Meghan Markle's privacy after taking a selfie says he did not know she was there.

Hasan Hasanov, 58, was confronted by Meghan's minder after he stuck his phone in front of her while taking a selfie at the tennis tournament.

Meghan and two pals made a surprise appearance at Wimbledon's Court One last week to watch fellow American Serena Williams, a friend of the Duchess, play Kaja Juvan.

Hasan was asked to respect Meghan's privacy when a minder mistakenly thought he was photographing the Duchess.

However, it turned out he was actually taking a selfie, a copy of which he shared with The Sun.

He told the newspaper: "I honestly couldn’t really care less about taking a picture of Meghan, Harry or any of the royals — and, if I did, I’d ask first.

"I was much more interested in getting a video of Roger Federer in action.”

The Wimbledon superfan, originally from Azerbaijan, queued from 5am to get a place on court one - and described the seat he got as the best in his 15 years of attending the tournament.

He decided to take a selfie to make his wife jealous for not joining him in his early morning ticket quest.

When Meghan's minder told him 'please give them privacy', he assumed the officer was talking about taking pictures of the players.

He finally realised he had been sitting just metres away from the Duchess when his daughter sent him a picture of The Sun's front page story about the royal picture ban

Despite the telling off, Hasan, who has been living in London for 20 years, says he is still fond of the royal family.

My granddad had 48 houses in Lagos but willed nothing to us –Actress Funmi Bank-Anthony

Tall and smashing actress, Funmi Bank-Anthony blows hot on the allegation of promiscuity in Nollywood, as she opines that it is at the discretion of any actor to decide whatever he or she wishes to use to attain stardom, stating bluntly that “it is nobody’s business”.

The philanthropist and granddaughter of the late Sir Mobolaji Bank-Anthony was, however, quick to disclose her staying power in the make-believe industry. Excerpt from the interview below...

Having started acting as a child, how was the journey from obscurity to stardom for you?

There is no broad way to success. You will always pay your way to stardom, be it financially, spiritually, materially…

Would you admit that you rode on the name of your late grandfather, Bank-Anthony to achieve some level of success in the industry?

I don’t think so. Yes, the name is household but I don’t think it has had any impact on my life and career. I can’t go to any bank and withdraw money with that name. He has done his bit when he was alive. He had his name and I am trying to make mine too. I am not even half way where I want to be, even though it is a name people can easily associate themselves with.

How did philanthropy begin for you?

It started with my grandfather, Sam Mobolaji Bank-Anthony. When he died, he wrote in his will that all his belongings be donated to the less privileged, even including the spoons. He had about 48 houses in Lagos and he declared that all be given to the motherless (children) and that is so huge for me, because I see it that he left us to suffer. If he had left the houses in Lagos for us, I would be a multi-billionaire today, even as a grandchild. He was one of the richest men in Nigeria and he didn’t leave anything for us. That was deep for me. I see it that the things you boast of today can be taken away from you within the twinkling of an eye. It then dawned on me that I could lose the things I have. So, philanthropy came out of the fear of losing the things I have. So, I would rather give it out than lose them when I am gone, though some people take you for granted when they know you are excessively nice.

Yoruba will react when pushed to the wall- Gani Adams

Gani Adams, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland and leader of Oodua Peoples Congress said Yoruba will react to the spate of killings in the South West when pushed to the wall.

He was reacting to the killing on Friday of Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the leader of pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere. Adams condoled with Pa Fasoranti and hoped that justice will be done.

“We are like the proverbial goat that it being chased”, Adams said in a statement circulated by his media assistant, Kehinde Aderemi.

“When it gets to the wall, it will certainly react. We are at that stage now,” Adams said.

He described Olakunrin’s killing by suspected herdsmen in Ondo State as one too many by Fulani who are invading the South West in their numbers and perpetrating atrocities.

“We only want the whole world to know what has been done and being done to our people.

“They should be aware of the actions that preceded our reaction when it eventually comes.

“We are not bereft of ideas of how to stop this criminality on our land. It is just so that we should not be blamed when the reaction comes”, he added.
