BBC presenter Nick Robinson admits he can't justify his six-figure salary the corporation pays him

The BBC's former political editor has said he does not deserve his six-figure wage in an attack on the corporation paying high salaries.

Nick Robinson, who presents the flagship Today programme on Radio 4, said he 'can't even try' to justify his pay packet, which the broadcaster's latest annual report showed was up to £294,999 a year.

Speaking to Environment Secretary Michael Gove at the Buxton International Festival in Derbyshire, the journalist, 55, said: 'People ask, 'Why are you paid so much more than doctors and nurses?' I earn it because I work for someone who chooses to pay me that money. I can't justify it.'

Mr Robinson, who worked as political editor for a decade up to 2015, also confessed to earning more than his female colleagues. But he added: 'I'm not paid more than them now for a single programme. It's additional payments for additional work.'

Boris Johnson is set to be crowned Prime Minister on Wednesday but many are threatening to quit

Boris Johnson's Brexit plan faced a double blow last night before he even enters No 10. Polls show Mr Johnson is likely to win a comprehensive victory when the result of the Tory leadership race is announced tomorrow.

But in a sign of difficulties he faces once in Downing Street, senior ministers opposing No Deal including Philip Hammond and David Gauke announced they would quit the Government if he becomes Prime Minister.

They are among half a dozen ministers expected to resign on Wednesday, when Theresa May leaves office, rather than being sacked.

In addition, six more MPs were rumoured to be planning to defect to the Liberal Democrats if he becomes the party's new leader.

And Mr Johnson is not just facing trouble from within his own party. Yesterday the Irish government took a hardline stance against his demand for a better Brexit deal.

Ireland's deputy prime minister Simon Coveney insisted the EU would not renegotiate the withdrawal agreement and rejected outright the idea of a time limit on the Northern Ireland backstop.

Kensington Palace releases three adorable new portraits to mark Prince George's sixth birthday

Kensington Palace has released three adorable new portraits to mark Prince George's sixth birthday today.

The young royal can be seen wearing an English football shirt, hinting at his sporty side. In two of the official photographs taken by his mother and amateur photographer Kate Middleton, 37, an adorable George is seen laughing on the grass of the Palace grounds while a third shows the young royal on a recent holiday in an unnamed location.

From the photos, it shows the prince has clearly inherited his father's love for football - the Duke of Cambridge is president of the FA and an Aston Villa fan - as evidenced in his white England team top in two of the new portraits.

Soulja Boy cutting people off, limiting time on social media since return from jail

Soulja Boy cutting people off, limiting time on social media since return from jail

Soulja Boy is making some huge changes to his lifestyle following a stint in county jail and that means shrinking his social circle and shying away from social media.

Sources close to Soulja say his three months in L.A. County Jail served as an eye-opener, and now that he's back home, he's cutting people off and cutting off his time on Twitter and Instagram.

The biggest change -- .he kicked a bunch of people out of his crib in the San Fernando Valley, the same home that was burglarized when he was locked up.

Cardi B gets Offset’ name tattooed on her

Cardi B's got Offset under her leg and she proudly showed that off with a newly revealed tattoo while chatting with her hubby.

Offset posted a very up-close and personal snapshot Sunday of what appears to be a Facetime convo he was having with Cardi B, in which she hoisted up her leg and showed him a tat bearing his name on the backside of her thigh.

He captioned his post, "CAN'T WAIT TO GET HOME," throwing in a bunch of tongue emojis for good measure. Offset also put a tongue-out emoji over his mug.

''Rats ate deceased baby’s ear at Anambra hospital''

A police report has cleared the mystery surrounding a baby’s missing ear at the Victory Children’s Hospital, Onitsha, Anambra State.

The report, which was sighted by a Punch correspondent on Sunday, exonerated the hospital and its workers from blame on the incident.

The parents of the baby girl had in 2015, when the incident happened, accused the hospital management and staff of chopping off their child’s ear for ritual purposes.

This resulted in a series of arrests of members of staff of the hospital.

But the report by the office of the Inspector-General of Police stated that rats actually ate the baby’s ear at the hospital.

The report read in part, “This deals with a case of an alleged mutilation of a newborn baby girl’s ear reported to the Inspector-General of Police by Mr Solomon Igwe against Dr. Oliver Umeh, the owner, and staff of the Victory Children’s Hospital, Onitsha.

“On July 30, 2015, around 7.30am, Solomon Igwe, upon unwrapping the corpse, discovered that the right ear of the baby had been severed from the body.

“He reported to the Central Police Station, Onitsha, where he accused Dr Oliver Umeh as being responsible for the missing ear.

“While the investigation was ongoing, Dr Oliver Nnamdi felt dissatisfied with the police arrest and detention , and from one level of investigation to another as he was neither at the hospital during the admission/treatment and the death of the said baby hence, he petitioned the Inspector-General of Police.

“The said petition was subsequently forwarded to the Commissioner of Police, Homicide Section, for harmonisation and consolidation.

“While investigation was ongoing, the parents made a demand for the sum of N10m for Dr Oliver Umeh to be vindicated, but he sensed a foul play and an attempt to extort and blackmail him using the then investigating team.

“Consequently, he wrote a counter petition to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, urging the transfer of the case to Abuja for an unbiased investigation.

“In the course of the investigation, statements of parties to the case were recorded and the scene of crime was visited. Detectives also viewed the corpse of the deceased baby.

“An autopsy was conducted on the remains of the deceased baby, but the parents contested the outcome.

“This occasioned the parents of the deceased baby to arrange for another pathologist, who conducted a second autopsy.

“In the course of investigation, it was established that Mr Solomon Igwe and his wife, Bridget, brought their five-day-old baby girl to the Victory Children’s Hospital, Onitsha, as a referral case from St. Mary’s Hospital, Okpoko Onitsha.

“It was also revealed that 45 minutes after their arrival, the baby died in the presence of the parents while on admission, but the parents could not collect the corpse on that fateful day, but on arrival for the collection of the corpse  the following day for burial, it was discovered that the deceased’s right ear had been severed; they alerted Dr Amadi Ifeanyi of the development and subsequently reported to the police.”

The report added that police investigation revealed that the parents capitalised on the discovered severed ear and became suspicious of the cause of death.

It further stated that both the first and second post-mortem examinations conducted on the insistence of the father of the deceased baby revealed that the ear was apparently removed by rodents, hence the serrated edges of the defect left behind. Histology also shows that the defect arose after death.

“Consequently, this evidently resolved the contention as to the cause of death and the severed ear.

“There is nothing of evidential value linking Dr Oliver Umeh to the alleged crime in the course of investigation as no enough evidence abound on the allegation linking Dr. Oliver Umeh to any crime.”

A$AP Rocky's hometown congressman isn't sure Trump is genuine about helping the rapper

TMZ got Rep. Adriano Espaillat in NYC Sunday -- where he represents A$AP's home borough of Harlem and asked what he made of Trump saying he'd guarantee Rocky's bail if need be.

Rep. Espaillat says Trump being willing to put his own rep on the line for A$AP's bail is somewhat irrelevant, 'cause as he points out ... money's not really the issue here.

He was also asked if Trump is just using this as a re-election tactic to tap into a new demographic of potential voters come 2020, but the congressman won't go there. He tells them he doesn't wanna speculate on potential motives -- but what he is sure about is that those wanting to get A$AP freed will take any help they can get at this point, including from 45. But why is TMZ like this. LOL

COZA saga: Timi Dakolo holds press conference, my life, that of my wife and children no longer safe

Timi Dakolo yesterday held a press conference at the Regency Hotel, Lagos, Dakolo stated that things got worse when their residential address in Lagos was made public, thereby making them susceptible to attacks.

According to him, he had noted with increasing alarm, how his life and that of his wife and children had been put at risk by unscrupulous persons.

“We have been followed, our home has been watched, people have been standing in corners pointing fingers at our home – we have been unable to do any work; the children have had to be explained to several times why they cannot go outside and play,” he alleged.

He said that his wife, Busola was trailed home by the policemen who initially attempted to abduct her, saying that one of the officers told his wife “Oga is in the car and he wants to speak with her” which made him suspected that the armed policemen were at his home to deliver more than a letter.

According to Dakolo, his wife had filed a petition at the office of an ‘AGP’ in Alagbon, Ikoyi June 27, 2019, over the alleged rape incident.

“The AGP personally assigned the file and personally asked for an expedition of action to investigate the case. This was before the YNaija video was released. We had since been to the police station on several occasions on the invitation of the police to respond to various questions in the course of the investigation” he further mentioned.

“We were therefore shocked to have been invited to Abuja when no visible action was taken to interview Mr Fatoyinbo. As far as we know, Mr Fatoyinbo has not been questioned on the strength of my wife’s petition even after several invitations by the police,” he said.

He also disclosed that his petition and that of Fatoyinbo had been moved to Lagos, saying that “We have never threatened anyone on our lives. Rather, we are now the ones who feel threatened. That is why we have Falana & Falana Chambers representing us and they have reported this matter to the police.

“We receive the information from our lawyers, Falana & Falana Chambers, this morning that both our petition and the petition of Mr Biodun Fatoyinbo will be moved to Lagos. We acknowledge the effort of the Nigeria Police to ensure that our confidence in their impartiality, professionalism and good sense in this case is not shaken.”

Why Ajimobi released ministry official jailed for killing husband- Ex-Attorney-General

A week before the end of his tenure in May 2019, the then Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, pardoned an official of the Oyo State Ministry of Justice, Yewande Oyediran, who was sentenced to seven years in prison for killing her husband, Lowo.

Oyediran, who was a lawyer, was in November 2017, convicted for manslaughter by Justice Muntar Abimbola of the Oyo State High Court, sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State.

She killed her husband with a knife after a disagreement on February 2, 2016, at their residence in the Akobo area of Ibadan. The disagreement was said to have arisen after Yewande accused her late husband of infidelity.

However, a few days before leaving office, Governor Ajimobi granted the convict amnesty.

Speaking with The Punch on the telephone on Sunday, the Attorney-General of Oyo State under Ajimobi, Mr. Seun Abimbola, said the governor had the constitutional right to grant amnesty to any convict.

He, however, said Ajimobi did not exercise the power arbitrarily as it was being insinuated.

Abimbola said on the day the convict was pardoned, 49 other persons were also freed by Ajimobi.

The former commissioner for justice said a committee was set up to look into the petitions of 400 persons who had pleaded for clemency.

He said the committee comprised commissioners, officials of the Department of State Services and other government agencies which then advised the government.

The former AG dismissed reports that the convict was pardoned because of her former position as an official of the ministry of justice and the influence of her family.

Abimbola said, “The issue of clemency by any government is constitutional but the exercise of that power is not arbitrary. It is based on the recommendation of the committee on the prerogative of mercy.

“The committee is chaired by the attorney-general and also has DSS officers, the police, the chaplain and the chief imam of the Government House, Legal Aid Council, Director, Legal Affairs, the Solicitor-General and the Directorate of Public Prosecution are members. So, it was not an arbitrary decision.

“The lady in question is just one out of 50 that were pardoned. And the 50 that were pardoned were drawn out of 400 that were considers. So, she was not singled out as some are insinuating. Even the prisons authorities brought recommendations on the good behaviour of those pardoned.”

Abimbola maintained that Oyediran had already served half of her sentence and the governor decided to show her mercy since she was not convicted of premeditated murder.

He explained that nine months in prison is equal to a year, adding that her sentence began counting from the day she was detained.

The former commissioner added, “She was arrested in 2016 and her sentence started reading from the day she was arrested. A year in prison is nine months. She was not convicted for murder but for manslaughter. It was a fight between a husband and a wife which resulted in death.

“People should stop saying she killed her husband as if it was premeditated. The amnesty was not a secret one. We did it every May 29 and even the new governor pardoned convicts on June 12.”

The decision of the Ajimobi-led government to pardon the husband killer has, however, sparked a debate on social media.

Many argued that were the convict a man, he would not have been released so early from prison.

Many male Nigerians further stated that had it been a woman that was killed, several feminist groups would have taken to the streets to protest.

Dad begs his fellow parents to not take their kids to watch The Lion King

It's the hotly anticipated remake of the much-loved 1994 Disney classic, and it coincides with the summer holidays.

Meaning a cinema trip to watch Disney's 2019 version of The Lion King is sure to be on pretty much every kid's wish-list this summer.

One dad, however, is begging his fellow parents to seriously not take their kids to watch it.

Is he worried that the death of Mufasa - which traumatised so many of us 25 years ago - will be too upsetting for the kids of today?

Or, does he simply think the much-hyped film won't be worth the price of a ticket?

As it turns out, his reasons are all to do with him enjoying the film himself.

The dad, from Porirua in New Zealand's North Island, took to  Facebook to urge other mums and dads not to take their young Disney fans to the cinema for evening screenings of The Lion King, LADBible reports.

"To all the parents in Porirua please do NOT take your kids to the movies tmrw night to watch lion king, it's the holidays so take them during the day while us adults are at mahi (work).

"After five is our time. I will have no dramas telling your tamariki (children) to shut the whakarongotai up if they're making unnecessary noise!!

"Don't ruin my time with mufasa and simbux. Said with love."

He's not the only parent to feel this way.

Another adult added: "Sorry kids. We waited too damn long for this. Stay home for the sake of all our inner children thanks.

"We will make it up to you with the screenings of Frozen 2, Moana 2, and so forth but Mufasa, Simba, Mulan and Ariel ... NAH stay home."

So what did the dad actually make of the remake?

Apparently it failed to live up to expectations, and he gave it six out of ten, writing: " Beyoncé you are the queen of music don't get me wrong...but not of the pride lands."

Bauchi records outbreak of three types of animals and birds diseases

Bauchi State Government on Sunday said that it has recorded outbreak of three types of animals and birds diseases in the last six months in some parts of the state.

Dr Bala Lukshi the Permanent Secretary, Bauchi State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, said this in Bauchi in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

“We recorded what is called Equine influenza a viral disease, but this species is specific, because every species of animal has its own influenza.

“We have Ivan influenza which was recorded in 2006 in Nigeria then after which other countries recorded swine influenza for pigs.

“But this year, for the first time we recorded Equine Influenza in six states in Nigeria and Bauchi State happened to be one of the affected states,” Lukshi said.

“We first recorded the disease in Gamawa Local Government and from all indications the disease came through Niger Republic.

“In Gamawa we have livestock market where horses and donkeys are being sold and we believe is the route where this disease came to our state.

“Other affected areas are along the border line with Niger Republic, but we were able to tackle it,” he said.

Egypt defends airport security following British Airways cancellation of flights to cairo

Egypt has defended security at its airports after two European airlines temporarily halted their flights to Cairo.

The British Airways abruptly suspended all flights to Cairo on Saturday for seven days, citing unspecified security concerns.

The move raised concerns in Egypt over potential harm to the country’s vital tourism industry, which was recently showing signs of recovery after a years-long slump.

A senior Egyptian aviation official criticised the flight cancellations.

“All Egyptian airports are well-secured. Security at them exceeds the standard rules,” head of Egypt’s Civil Aviation Authority, Sameh al-Hefnawi, said late Saturday.

He claimed that the cancellations were politically motivated.

“The issue has nothing to do with aviation. It is political. “Whenever Egypt is recovering, a fabricated crisis happens,” al-Hefnawi added.
