Air force man returns €37,000 found in Kano market

An Aircraftman of the Nigerian Air Force, Bashir Umar, has returned the sum of €37,000 found in a parcel at the Hajj Camp Market in Kano State to the owner.

Umar, who is a member of the NAF Mobile Air Defence Team deployed for airport security duties, found the parcel on Tuesday during a routine patrol with some of his colleagues, according to the air force in a statement on Sunday.

The Aircraftman, however, returned the money, which was said to belong to one Alhaji Ahmad, after calling a phone number he found on the parcel.


The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, said the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, had directed the NAF Chief of Administration to “immediately come up with modalities to reward the airman.”

Daramola said, “The air force is set to reward one of its personnel, Aircraftman Bashir Umar, who found and returned the sum of €37,000 to Alhaji Ahmad, the owner of the lost money.

“The incident occurred at the Hajj Camp Market in Kano on Tuesday, when Bashir, while on a routine patrol with some of his colleagues, found the money in a parcel. Fortunately, there was a phone number on the parcel, which the airman called, and he eventually handed over the package to the owner.

Channels Tv reporter, Precious Owolabi shot during shiites/police clash is dead

Channels TV has announced the death of its reporter shot during the clash between the police and Shiite protesters in Abuja, yesterday.

The reporter, Precious Owolabi was working with the TV station as a member of the National Youth Service Corps.

According to Channels TV, The 23-year-old died of a gunshot wound he sustained while covering the clash between the police and the Shiite protesters.

The management and staff of Channels Television said they were greatly saddened by the untimely and unfortunate death of such a promising journalist.


They pray that God will grant his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss, and avail his soul eternal rest.

The police earlier said they lost a deputy commissioner, Usman Umar.

Umar was in charge of Operations, FCT Command.

Southwest governors attend Funke Olakunrin’s burial, visit Pa Fasoranti too (photos)

Southwest governors on Monday visited the leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, whose daughter, Funke Olakunri was killed recently in Ore area of Ondo State.

Olakunri was buried yesterday and five of the Southwest governors were at the event. The Governors are, Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo).

Army probes stolen N400m by five soldiers

Lieutenant Audu Arihu, spokesman for the 8 Division Nigerian Army in Sokoto, has confirmed the theft of N400 million, not billions, by some lower ranked soldiers in July.

He also said investigations have commenced.

He identified the runaway soldiers as Corporal Gabriel Oluwaniyi, Corporal Mohammed Aminu, Corporal Haruna, Oluji Joshua and Hayatudeen.

Reports said military authorities have quizzed Major General Hakeem Oladapo Otiki, former general officer commanding of the division, who ordered the five soldiers to escort the money from Sokoto to Kaduna.


Apart from the quizzing, the former GOC was said to be under close watch and would be brought to Abuja after he was cross-examined by the Directorate of Military Intelligence, the Special Intelligence Bureau and the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police.

Tracking the soldiers involved with the heist would be difficult as they abandoned their phones at the infantry corps in Jaji, Kaduna state before they escaped.

Graphic photos: 9 dead, 30 injured as suicide bomber in burka blows herself up outside a hospital in Pakistan

At least nine people have been killed and 30 more have been injured after a female suicide bomber wearing a burka blew herself up outside a Pakistani hospital  yesterday.

The attack in Dera Ismail Khan was claimed by the 'Pakistani Taliban' - Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan. 

Senior police officer, Salim Riaz Khan, said gunmen on motorcycles opened fire on police in a residential area, killing two.

He says the bomber then struck at the entrance to the hospital, killing another four police and three civilians who were visiting their relatives. 


The female attacker set off 15lbs (7kgs) of explosives packed with nails and ball-bearings, according to Inayat Ullah, a local forensics expert.

Eight police are among the wounded, and many of those with injuries are in critical condition.

Femi Otedola to foot Sadiq Daba’s medical expenses

In a statement on Sunday, Mr Otedola said he was sad to hear that the veteran actor had fallen ill again. Read his statement published by The Cable below…

 “I heard about Mr. Sadiq Daba’s health condition when it was brought to my attention through an online news story I read two days ago,” he said.

“I was saddened to hear that he had taken ill again after overcoming his challenges from prostate cancer just two years ago.


“From the news report, I gathered that he was rushed to the Emergency Unit of LUTH after being diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

“I must say that even though I don’t know Mr.Daba personally, he is a face I am familiar with through the old TV drama production ‘Cock Crow at Dawn’ which I used to watch while growing up.

“I was moved by a sense of nostalgia and concern when I read of his medical situation recently and decided to take over his medical bills. He has been visited and arrangements are being made to support him.

“In other climes, the likes of Sadiq Daba and other such actors who more or less paved the way for the entertainment industry and the Nollywood industry in Nigeria (which is touted as the 3rd largest movie industry in the world) would be celebrated as Icons and due recognition would be accorded to them.

“For me, taking care of Sadiq’s medical expenses is my little way of showing appreciation and gratitude for the good memories he created for me and others in the past.”

During the '90s, Naomi was the most prominent black supermodel of that time, and appeared to feel threatened by the new African-American woman on the scene.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Tyra addressed their issue, and clarified the word 'rivalry' which was often used in reference to both she and Naomi.

'It wasn't a rivalry, and I'm very sensitive to that word because a rivalry is with two equals to me, whereas one was very dominant,' she began.

She [Naomi] was a supermodel and I was just some new girl that got on a plane from Paris, and was studying fashion in magazines at a fashion library.

'I had a very painful early days in Paris. As much as I was booking every single fashion show, people didn't know I was going home at night crying my eyes out because a woman that I was looking up to seemed like she just didn't want me to be there, and was doing everything in her power to make me go away.'

Tyra reflected on her younger self, and her thought process as a teen, versus now as an adult.

BBC presenter Nick Robinson admits he can't justify his six-figure salary the corporation pays him

The BBC's former political editor has said he does not deserve his six-figure wage in an attack on the corporation paying high salaries.

Nick Robinson, who presents the flagship Today programme on Radio 4, said he 'can't even try' to justify his pay packet, which the broadcaster's latest annual report showed was up to £294,999 a year.

Speaking to Environment Secretary Michael Gove at the Buxton International Festival in Derbyshire, the journalist, 55, said: 'People ask, 'Why are you paid so much more than doctors and nurses?' I earn it because I work for someone who chooses to pay me that money. I can't justify it.'

Mr Robinson, who worked as political editor for a decade up to 2015, also confessed to earning more than his female colleagues. But he added: 'I'm not paid more than them now for a single programme. It's additional payments for additional work.'

Boris Johnson is set to be crowned Prime Minister on Wednesday but many are threatening to quit

Boris Johnson's Brexit plan faced a double blow last night before he even enters No 10. Polls show Mr Johnson is likely to win a comprehensive victory when the result of the Tory leadership race is announced tomorrow.

But in a sign of difficulties he faces once in Downing Street, senior ministers opposing No Deal including Philip Hammond and David Gauke announced they would quit the Government if he becomes Prime Minister.

They are among half a dozen ministers expected to resign on Wednesday, when Theresa May leaves office, rather than being sacked.


In addition, six more MPs were rumoured to be planning to defect to the Liberal Democrats if he becomes the party's new leader.

And Mr Johnson is not just facing trouble from within his own party. Yesterday the Irish government took a hardline stance against his demand for a better Brexit deal.

Ireland's deputy prime minister Simon Coveney insisted the EU would not renegotiate the withdrawal agreement and rejected outright the idea of a time limit on the Northern Ireland backstop.

Breaking! Firefighters battling huge blaze at a shopping centre in London (photos)

Around 100 firefighters are battling a huge blaze at a shopping centre in East London. Dramatic images show flames ripping through The Mall in Walthamstow, with eyewitnesses saying 999 crews are struggling to get it under control.

Fifteen fire engines have been sent to the scene, and the Metropolitan Police have described it as a "major incident".

An eyewitness told Mirror Online that it isn't clear if there's anyone inside the building. He said: "It's absolutely terrible to see. All the roof of the Mall is on fire, it's going to get bigger and bigger."


The blaze broke out at around 7.40am.

In a statement London Fire Brigade said: "Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters have been called to a fire at The Mall shopping centre on Selborne Walk in Walthamstow.

"The Brigade was called at 0740. Fire crews from Walthamstow, Leyton, Tottenham, Leytonstone, Homerton and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

"The cause of the fire is not known at this stage."
