Man allegedly slices daughter’s throat in Yola

An eight-year-old girl, Zarau Seidu, is now lying critically ill at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yola, the Adamawa State capital, after her father allegedly cut her throat with a knife.

The suspect, Mr. Seidu Dan Iya, who is believed to be suffering from a psychological problem after an alleged long time drug abuse, when asked by neighbours why he cut his daughter’s throat, said he just felt like doing it.

The story broke out on Wednesdar when a neighbour of the suspect complained on her Facebook page that they took a girl to the FMC, Yola and had difficulty in getting a doctor to attend to her.

The doctor who attended to the girl, Mr Elkannah Patrick, said she had a 50-50 chance of surviving.

He said he had cleaned the cut and would source a tool for surgery, stressing that the girl had a slim chance to live.

The Head of Clinical Services, FMC, Yola, Dr. Yerima Suleiman Yusuf, said the hospital would treat the victim free of charge.

He said: “We have a Paupers’ Fund from which we will treat this patient, because we realise that the mother is not ready and the father has a psychiatric problem.”

The suspect has been detained by the police.

Ranching: Akwa Ibom imports 2,000 cattle from Brazil

The Akwa Ibom State Government has said that it had imported 2,000 cattle from Brazil as part of efforts to produce sufficient meats with a view to increasing protein intake for people of the state.

It added that the development is also aimed at ensuring food sustainability in the oil rich state.

State Commissioner for Information, Charles Udoh stated this while interacting with newsmen in Uyo. He added that the state government had adopted a holistic agriculture plans on food security.

He said: “The ranch was established in conjunction with foreign investors. The cattle have been quarantined. You know in the heat of the election, nobody wanted to venture into that ranch.

And in the heat of that too, the Commissioner for Agriculture lost his seat.

“The reason we quarantined the cattle was that, first we needed to inoculate them. What I mean by quarantined is that we needed to get them acclimatised to the weather and prepare them for the long trip across the Atlantic Ocean.

“While we quarantined and inoculated them, we tried to get some pregnant because it is a long journey and some could die on the way. These are rare breed of cattle that can produce milk and meat at the same time. We are expecting 2,000.”

Anambra traders ban prayers in markets

The Anambra State Amalgamated Traders Association on Wednesday banned prayers in markets in the state. ASMATA President -General Ikechukwu Ekwegbalu said this in Onitsha while addressing market union leaders.

He said the ban became necessary because politicians had hijacked the exercise.

Ekwegbalu said, “What we see now is extortion and conversion of prayer sessions into political rallies. This move became necessary because we have discovered that some overzealous people abuse this practice by extorting money from market men and women regularly. Some have turned the prayers into political jamborees and this is not healthy for the system.”

The union chief  urged ASMATA members to stop involving  police or government officials in matters concerning them, saying they should  report cases to the leaders of their  markets

Senator Melaye vows to turn Kogi around in 4 years

Sen. Dino Melaye, who is eyeing the governorship post of Kogi state, has said he will run the state as an independent country that will not need to rely on monthly handouts from the Federal Government.

Melaye spoke at a media interactive session organised by the Kogi State council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for governorship aspirants, at the NUJ Press Centre, Lokoja. The two term senator is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.

He said the state is blessed with abundant resources and promised to revive the state economy and bring it to an enviable height within four years.

He regretted the pervading poverty and penury owing to maladministration and widespread corruption.

While noting that countries now depended on ideas to revolutionise their economies, he promised that Kogi, under his watch, would not depend on handouts in form of monthly allocations from the Federation Account to survive.

Melaye, who is the Senate committee chairman on aviation, said he would revolutionise agriculture and transform the abundant mineral resources in the state into tangible products that would earn the state good income.

He said that through ideas, galvanised and harmonised by quality leadership, Singapore was transformed from a Third World country to an economically-advanced nation, while Dubai became a high income generating city in United Arab Emirate.

“In four years, we will revive the economy of Kogi and the state will become the envy of others. I have gone round the world and I am sure that I have the necessary capacity and exposure to achieve this.

“I am talking about Kogi State and the generations yet unborn. Let us have public nursery schools, develop education, health and other core sectors to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, and restore the middle class.

“The paradox of Kogi is that in spite of our abundance, we are poor. Kogi is too rich to be poor. We have to prepare our youths for the future through ICT. Today, ideas have overtaken oil.

“We are focused and intellectually mobile with vision and mission to drive the process.

“I will operate Kogi like an independent country. Kogi occupies 30,354 square kilometres of land, with a population of about 4.7 million people,” he said.

The senator, who disclosed that he would contest the presidency of Nigeria in the next eight years, stressed that his governorship aspiration was divine.

“I am an emissary sent to emancipate the people of Kogi State from economic cowards and financial scavengers,” he declared.

Terrorism: Buhari hints of imminent shakeup in military

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday hinted on possible changes in the nation’s security architecture with a view to reinvigorate it in the ongoing fight against terrorism and violent crimes in the country.

The president gave the hint when he received traditional rulers from the South West zone of the country, led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari told the rulers that already he had recently directed a reshuffle in the army where Lt.-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun was promoted and deployed as the army’s Chief of Policy and Plans.

According to him, the government will continue to effect more changes in the army, where necessary, so as to boost the morale of the nation’s troops engaged in various security assignments across the country.

“I believe you are aware that there is a reshuffle in the Army, including the promotion and deployment of Lt.-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun as the Nigerian Army’s Chief of Policy and Plans.

“This is done in order to reinvigorate and reenergise our troops to do more.

“There will be further reviews where necessary for maximum performance,’’ he said.

The president said, as the traditional authorities in their communities, government and the security agencies would be relying on them to monitor the several different communities and people coming in and out of their areas.

“Let me be very clear about our firm resolve to change the security architecture of Nigeria.

“It is one of the top priorities for this government but we won’t be able to achieve this goal without the support and input of you, our royal fathers.

“We hope that, for instance, traditional rulers will be able to observe new entrants into the community by requesting leaders of such ethnic groups to notify the traditional authorities of new intakes, thereby creating the opportunities for the gathering of actionable intelligence which tracks such movements in and out of communities thereby offering early warning signals,’’ he said.

The president also assured the traditional rulers and the entire nation that his administration would enforce the law, prosecute law breakers and secure an atmosphere of tranquility for all Nigerians where ever they choose to live and also protect communities from all forms of crimes.

Atiku, father, grandpa not Nigerians, Kyari tells tribunal

Abba Kyari, Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday told the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar in the February 23 general election was a Cameroonian “flesh and blood’’.

Kyari, who was led through his deposition by Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, counsel for the president, insisted that Jada, the hometown of the former vice president was in Adamawa Province, an enclave that belonged to Northern Cameroon in 1946 when he (Atiku) was born.

He explained that Atiku was already born in 1946 before the plebiscite was conducted in 1961 to divide Nigeria and Cameroon when Jada which was part of Northern Cameroon voted to become Nigerian territory.

Kyari further said that the plebiscite also resulted in the Southern part of Cameroon officially aligning to becoming Cameroonian territory.

The witness, therefore, said the French system of assimilation had compelled people of Jada, including Abubakar’s father and grandfather to be full Cameroonians in “flesh and blood’’.

WAEC official disowns Buhari’s Cambridge credentials

A West African Examination Council official, Osidehinde Adewunmi, on Wednesday, disowned the Cambridge University’s Moderated International Examination credentials produced by President Muhammadu Buhari and tendered as exhibits before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja.

The two documents earlier admitted as Exhibits 19 and 21 were Buhari’s statement of results and the broadsheet for the results of the 18 candidates who sat for the examinations in 1961.

The Deputy Registrar, School Examinations in Nigeria, of WAEC, who appeared before the tribunal on a subpoena, testified before the five-man tribunal led by Justice Mohammed Garba, as Buhari’s fourth defence witness on Wednesday.

He appeared in the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, challenging Buhari’s victory at the February 23, 2019 poll.

Part of the grounds of the petition was that Buhari lacked the educational qualification to contest the election.

When cross-examined by the counsel for the All Progressives Congress, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Adewunmi said he, as a WAEC official, certified one of the documents bearing the name of the University of Cambridge Moderated Examination earlier tendered as Exhibit marked R21.

The witness, who said he had been working with WAEC for about 30 years, told the tribunal that the examination was conducted by Cambridge University in conjunction with WAEC.

He confirmed that 18 persons sat for the examinations in 1961, adding that Buhari was listed as number two on the list of candidates for the examination.

He confirmed that Buhari sat for eight subjects and had five credits in the examination – Oral English, C5; History, A3; Geography, C6; Hausa, C5; and Health Science, C6.

“He came out with aggregate of 32 and he was awarded Grade 2,” he confirmed.

When asked, he confirmed that “whoever has this (the R21 exhibit) has secondary education”.

Under cross-examination by the petitioners’ lawyer, Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), Adewunmi was asked if Exhibit R19 was a certificate, he said, “I cannot say whether it is a certificate because my signature is not on the certificate. It is not bearing my name or the name of my organisation”.

Asked again, the witness said, “This document is bearing the name of Cambridge University Assessment International Education”.

Asked if the document was issued by WAEC, he said,  “It is not a document from the West Africa Examination Council”.

Asked about Exhibit R21, he said, “This is the foundation, the primary foundation for issuance of a certificate.”

The witness was also asked if the document was a certificate.

“This is not a certificate,” the witness answered.

When asked, he also said, “I have never worked with the University of Cambridge”.

Surgeon dad 'broken' as son, 24, dies after 'sinking to bottom' of family pool

The dad of a talented young man who drowned at his family's £3.5million mansion said his son swam two lengths before "sinking to the bottom".

Dominic Hamlyn, a University of Cambridge student, died after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest in an outdoor pool.

The 24-year-old's heartbroken father paid tribute to his "hero" son in a moving statement.

He described him as a "superb athlete" and a "beautiful boy" who had delivered a 15-minute speech at his brother's 21st birthday party just moments before he died.

"There is no mystery, there were no drugs," Peter Hamlyn said.

"He was swimming in his swimming trunks, almost sober. He had just spoken for 15 minutes without notes.

South Korean doomsday cult leader jailed for six years

The leader of a South Korean doomsday cult has been sentenced to six years in jail for holding her followers captive in Fiji and subjecting them to violence.

Shin Ok-ju, who founded the Grace Road Church, convinced 400 people to move to Fiji in 2014, claiming they would be safe from imminent natural disaster

Once there, their passports were taken away and many of them reported being beaten to "drive out evil spirits".

Shin was arrested last July. On Monday, a South Korean court found Shin guilty on several criminal charges including violence, child abuse and fraud.

"The victims suffered helplessly from collective beatings and experienced not only physical torture but also severe fear and considerable mental shock," said a sub-court of the Suwon District Court.

"Heavy punishment is inevitable against illegal acts carried out in the name of religion," it said.

Five other church officials were also sentenced. There has been no comment from the church.

Heart-stopping moment neighbours use blankets to catch a three-year-old boy after he fell from a six-storey flat

A young boy in south-west China has miraculously survived a six-storey fall thanks to his quick-thinking neighbours.

The three-year-old boy was filmed desperately clinging onto a balcony of a high-rise building in Chongqing city's Jiulongpo district on Monday afternoon. Horrified residents quickly grabbed two large blankets and placed it below him.

Nail-biting footage shows the moment the boy loses his grip and falls. Fortunately, the blankets caught the falling child and he was unhurt.

The boy had been left alone at home and woke up from a nap to find his grandmother missing, according to Shangyou News. She had went out to get groceries.

In a bid to look for his grandmother, the boy had climbed on top of a sink on his balcony and tumbled over the glass railing, leaving him clinging on for dear life.

Video filmed by neighbour Mr Liu shows the child kicking his legs and desperately trying to pull himself up.

He was kicking and trying to climb up. He managed to lift himself a little bit but then slid back down again,' Mr Liu said.

A security guard of the residential district told video news site Pear that the child had been holding on for nearly four minutes before letting go.

Luckily, the boy had fallen right in the middle of the blankets and was unharmed.

The grandmother carried the boy home and his parents later took him to hospital.
