An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti, on Monday, sentenced a 35-year-old clergyman, Gabriel Asateru, to five years imprisonment for molesting a minor.
Pronouncing the judgment, Justice Oluwatoyin Abodunde said, “The accused person stands guilty and is accordingly convicted to serve a prison term of five years and to also pay a sum of N50,000 fine as stipulated by the Child’s Rights Law, 2005.”
Asateru, who was accused of defiling a five-year-old girl on December 23, 2016, at Ifisin Ekiti in the Ido/Osi Local Government Area of the state, was charged with one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
Gunmen have killed the resident pastor of the Living Faith Church, Romi New Extension, in Kaduna State, Jeremiah Omolara.
The pastor’s wife, according to a source, was abducted. The incident was said to have taken place along Kaduna-Abuja Road while the pastor and the wife were traveling to Abuja.
The source said the gunmen opened fire on their vehicle, killing the pastor on the spot. They later took the wife into the bush.
The son, it was learnt, escaped from the bandits. The source added that the abductors were demanding N50m as ransom.
The Chairman of the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Joseph Hayab, confirmed the incident.

A man, identified simply as Segun, has been arrested by the police for allegedly stabbing his friend, Yusuf, who lost a ram fight bet, to death in the Isawo area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
Punch Metro gathered that a disagreement ensued between the friends after Segun won a N500 bet he placed on his ram on Sunday.
Yusuf reportedly attacked Segun with a broken bottle A resident of the area, Kizito Isibor, said Segun stabbed Yusuf with a knife in self-defence, which led to his death.
He stated, “The incident happened on Tapa Road in the Oke Oko area of Isawo in Ikorodu around 11am on Sunday. Yusuf and Segun both live on the same street and are friends.
“Segun placed a bet of N500 on his ram against the other man’s ram and his ram won. Later, an argument ensued between Segun and Yusuf. They both engaged in a fist fight and people around intervened in the matter.
“They then decided to go to another venue to continue the fight. On their way to the venue, Yusuf punched Segun and wanted to stab him with a broken bottle, but in an attempt to defend himself, Segun brought out a knife and stabbed Yusuf in the chest.”
Isibor said Segun was caught and handed over to the police, while Yusuf’s corpse was taken to the police station.
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has kicked against the #RevolutionNow protest saying nobody should attempt the protest in the state.
Governor Wike said that Rivers State is not part of the RevolutionNow protest and whatever illegal agenda it seeks to pursue. He said: “Rivers State does not subscribe to what the RevolutionNow protest represents and Rivers State is not part of the protest”.
He directed security agencies in the state to arrest anybody involved in the RevolutionNow protest and also take all necessary steps to prosecute such persons.
Governor Wike urged parents to ensure that their children are not misled by agents of the march to participate in the illegal protest.
“All council chairmen are directed to be at alert. If they suspect any illegal gathering, they should report to the security agencies for immediate action “, the Governor said.
The deputy governor of Kogi State, Simon Achuba, on Monday blasted his principal, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, accusing him of encouraging violence in the state.
Achuba in an interview on Channels Television breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily claimed that he is being victimised by the governor for ‘doing the right thing,’ he also called for tight security in the state due to the spread of violence in the state.
“As a deputy governor, I have tried my best internally to ensure that the right things are done. For that sake, I am hated and denied my right.
“This was why in my last press interview I cried out to the world and to the law enforcement agents to focus on Kogi State because of the level of violence being perpetrated by the sitting governor of Kogi State,” Achuba said.
The deputy governor also described his current relationship with the governor as ‘rough and not very smooth.’
He blasted the governor for not towing the path of good governance and not delivering good governance to the people of the state.
“The communication broke down at a point where it became very glaring that he was not towing the path of good governance.
“The state of affairs is no very smooth; it is rough because of the disposition of the governor of Kogi State.
“Everyone elected to the position of governor and the deputy governor is expected to deliver on promises. You are expected to look at the wellbeing of the people and effect changes. These changes are not forthcoming in Kogi State.”
Achuba also claimed that Kogi State governor does not embrace criticism. According to him, this is not the trait of a good leader.
“When you access the government of Yahaya Bello, from day one it has been fighting, fighting and fighting. Anyone that has a different opinion from him becomes an enemy. Anyone that says anything that he is not pleased with, he goes ahead to attack the person.
“In governance, you must give room for criticism whether good or bad. A good leader learns from criticism. Those who criticise you might not necessarily be your enemy.”
Achuba added that despite him seeking the intervention of state governors, traditional rulers among others, ‘yet there is no solution,’ to the lingering crisis between him and the governor.
The Nigerian Police have justified its action of firing teargas at #RevolutionNow protesters, noting that their gathering was unlawful.

The Kaduna State High Court has granted the embattled leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and his wife Zeenat, leave to seek medical attention abroad.
In his ruling on Monday, Justice Darius Khobo ordered that the IMN leader be accompanied abroad by officials of the Kaduna State government.
The presiding judge ruled that El-Zakzaky and his wife should proceed to India for medical treatment.
He, however, did not give any time frame as to how long they will stay in India.
The country home of former governor Abdulaziz Yari was raided Sunday night by 20 operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The EFCC has not officially given the reason for the raid in Talata Marafa, about 100km from Gusau, the capital of Zamfara.
EFCC operatives spent about five hours in the house, according to a report by Daily Nigerian. It is not clear yet if they got anything incriminating as the governor and his family were not in the building.
Personnel of the Lagos State Police Command, on Saturday, recovered the corpse of a yet-to-be identified man in the Adio bus stop area of Ijanikin.
The victim, said to be about 35 years old, was alleged to have committed suicide by taking an insecticide, Sniper, the bottle of which was found by his lifeless body by homicide detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer of the Ijanikin Police Station during a visit to the scene of the incident.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said in a statement on Sunday that the corpse was recovered from the bush and deposited in the Mainland General Hospital, Yaba, for autopsy.
Elkana said, “On Saturday, August 3, 2019, around 9.30am, information received by the Ijanikin Police Station revealed that one unidentified man, about 35 years old, was lying dead in a bush beside the bridge at Adio bus stop, Ijanikin, Lagos.
“A team of homicide detectives led by the DPO, Ijanikin Police Station, visited the scene. On close observation, one plastic bottle of Sniper, suspected to have been taken by the deceased, was found by his side. Photographs were taken and the corpse was removed and deposited in the Mainland General Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, for autopsy. Investigation is ongoing.”

#RevolutionNow protests kicked off this morning in Lagos. As early as 7am, armed policemen, backed by soldiers blocked the National Stadium, Surulere in Lagos, where the march was expected to take off.
Those who were unfazed by police presence and gathered opposite it were teargassed. One person was shot, social media users claim. And some arrests were also made.
The organisers of the protest had asked Nigerians to gather at the stadium by 8am this morning.

A Lagos policeman has been held by a prostitute for allegedly refusing to pay her for her service. According to a Facebook user who shared the unpleasant story, the officer had agreed to pay the lady N7,000 for an all –night service but turned around in the morning and handed over N1000 cash to her. She then held him ad promising not to let go of him. The eyewitness said the officer’s cap had to be seized before he agreed to pay her another N4000. This happened at Idasho, Ibeju Lekki.
