Igbo group condemns Sowore’s continuous detention

Evang. Eliot Ugochukwu-Uko, the founder of the Igbo Youth Movement, IYM, has said the arrest and continuous detention of Omoyele Sowore “is bad news for the political health and image of Nigeria.”

In a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday, Ugochukwu-Uko, who is also the Deputy Secretary, Igbo Leaders of Thought (ILT), said the clampdown on the demonstrators “makes it difficult for the government to continue pretending it respects the democratic rights of her citizens.”
He added that “The international community could not have forgotten the leaders of the OCCUPY NIGERIA demonstration that shot down Lagos and Abuja, 7 years ago.

“The world also noted that President Goodluck Jonathan did not accuse the demonstrators of plotting to overthrow his Government.

“The world therefore wonders how and why the people who organized several high profile demonstrations against Jonathan’s government 7,6 and 5 years ago, have suddenly become intolerant of opposition voices today, simply because they are now in government and therefore at the receiving end today.

“It is truly surprising, how government believes that clampdown and intimidation will ultimately resolve Nigeria’s governance, political, and structural issues that has only increased the number of disgruntled and disappointed populace in recent time.

“This clampdown tactics deepened the secessionist agitations, popularised the Shite movement and created allies for them all over Nigeria today. This same clampdown tactics deployed once again, in a bid to avoid the necessary, unavoidable and inevitable conversation towards a new constitution and a new structure, will only turn the leaders and organizers of this demonstration, heroes and celebrities.”

He demanded that “government should release Sowore and his colleagues and engage them without further delay.

“The tension in the land today demands truthfulness on the part of government and eminent leaders of Nigeria.

“Are there still intelligible reasons and excuses why the whole country should continue to pretend we can still drag on the way we are going today?

“Frightening broad day killings of priests and kidnapping of citizens simultaneously going on all over the country, demonstrators being shot and manhandled in videos trending in social media, political, ethnic and religious divisions getting deeper by the day. Add these to the unemployment, hunger and frustration in the land, it becomes incomprehensible how any sensible leader could still continue to pretend that all is well.

“Nigeria is clearly at crossroads, eminent elders and leaders from the six geopolitical zones should as a matter of urgency, raise a committee of prominent, capable and patriotic leaders to begin the inevitable process to reinvent, reconcile, rejuvenate and recreate our country through the adoption at a referendum, a new people’s constitution, that would enshrine true federalism and devolution of power in our national life once again.

“The game of trying to avoid the truth and pretending that this military constitution will make Nigeria great by and by has become offensive.”

Uganda's pop star, Bobi Wine charged to court for 'annoying' the president

A Ugandan court on Tuesday charged pop star turned leading opposition figure Bobi Wine with "annoying" President Yoweri Museveni, his lawyer told AFP.

The singer, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, appeared in court on a prior treason charge after he and other opposition politicians allegedly stoned Museveni's convoy during a campaign rally in August last year.

"He was charged with annoying the president" in relation to the same case, his lawyer Asuman Basalirwa told AFP.

Wine, who entered parliament in 2017, has emerged as a leading critic of Museveni -- who has been in power for over three decades and has faced multiple detentions while authorities have frustrated his efforts to perform.

He announced last month that he would take on Museveni in 2021 national elections.

Watch horrifying moment kissing couple plunge to their deaths from a bridge

A couple locked in a passionate embrace tragically fell to their deaths after a night out in Peru.

Maybeth Espinoz and Hector Vidal had been on their way home from a nightclub in Cusco last Saturday when they tragically plunged 50ft off the Bethlehem Bridge.

The horrific moment was caught on CCTV.

Maybeth and Hector had stopped on the bridge to kiss after leaving a nearby nightclub just after 1am, according to local media.

Disturbing footage shows the couple leaning against a railing on the bridge, while hugging and kissing each other.

Maybeth, 34, proceeds to sit on top of the metal railing and wrap her legs around Hector, 36.

However she appears to lose her balance and begins to fall backwards, taking Hector with her.

The couple desperately tried to cling to the barrier but were unable to stop themselves from falling off the bridge.

Maybeth was killed outright, while Hector sustained a fractured skull and later died in hospital.

According to Panamerica, the couple were mountaineers who had moved to the Cusco region to work as tour guides.

DSS moves to keep Sowore in detention for 90 days

The Department of State Service has applied to the Federal High Court in Abuja for an order to allow it keep Sahara Reporters publisher, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, for 90 days.

Sowore, was arrested on Saturday by operatives of the DSS ahead of the Monday’s #RevolutionNow protest, which he had spearheaded.

DSS’ lawyer, G.O. Abadua, appeared before Justice Taiwo Taiwo on Tuesday to move the agency’s ex parte application for detention of the activist for 90 days.

After moving the application, marked FHC/ABJ/915/19, the judge adjourned ruling till Thursday.

He said the adjournment would afford him the time to watch the video evidence attached to the application by the security agency.

If the Government charges Sowore, some of them will have to be in court as witnesses - Falana

Femi Falana, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), says the government will be making a mistake if it files charges against Omoyele Sowore.

Sowore, who is the convener of #RevolutionNow movement, has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) since Saturday.

The DSS had accused him of threatening public peace and safety with his planned nationwide protest.

But speaking at an event organised by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) on Tuesday, the senior lawyer said Sowore had briefed him from detention that in the case he would be charged, his first witness would be someone in government who in 2011 also called for a revolution.

Sowore, according to Falana, refused to write a statement, insisting the DSS allow him to speak with his lawyer.

“I do hope that the government will not be stupid to charge Sowore. In fairness to them (DSS), they gave him a telephone to phone me. Of course I knew they were monitoring the phone, and I told him I hope they won’t charge you, because if they do, some of the people in government will be our witnesses,” he said.

“You know why? One of them, I won’t mention his name. In 2011, he asked Nigerians to learn from the Egyptian revolution and be ready for a revolution in Nigeria. So, he will be my first witness.

“The late Chief Gani Fawehinmi and four other people were charged with treasonable felony by the Ibrahim Babangida junta. I was one of them. We were detained in Kuje prison for two months. We were taken to the court, and what was the offence? I think we went beyond Sowore. We posted thousands of posters across the country, that Babangida must go. That was the treasonable felony.”

Busola Dakolo talks to UK newspaper, says police forced me at gun point to sign letter countering r*pe

Busola Dakolo has alleged the police forced her at gun-point to sign a document countering her r-pe allegations against Biodun Fatoyinbo, senior pastor of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA) church.

Busola, in an interview with UK Guardian , narrated how she was forced into a van by some armed men who mandated her to speak with their superior officer in Pidgin language.

She also recounted how she was handed a document containing allegations of “criminal conspiracy, falsehood, mischief and threat to life” to sign.

According to her, the contents of the letter were not levelled against Fatoyinbo but against she and her husband.

“One was holding a gun and the second, a letter. They told me they were from IG’s (inspector general of police) office in Abuja and that I needed to sign this letter and acknowledge it,” Dakolo said.

The incident, she said, occurred after a tinted mini bus followed her while she was driving into her home in Lagos.

On July 23, Dakolo and her husband were invited by the special tactical squad of the inspector general of police (IGP) for questioning over allegations of “falsehood and criminal conspiracy,” albeit, without extending the gesture to Fatoyinbo.

“Our culture doesn’t allow speaking of these sorts of things against anointed men of God. They’d rather hide it, and the party that is being victimized tends to live with that self-blame,” she said.

“The damage on the survivor is extremely terrible but the society, the church, keeps sweeping things under the carpet.”

Zimbabwe legalises growing of hemp

Zimbabwe will change its laws to allow farmers to grow industrial hemp for export, cabinet ministers said on Tuesday, adding that the government saw the plant as a future substitute for tobacco, the country's biggest export earning crop.

Industrial hemp is a strain of a cannabis species that is grown specifically for industrial uses of its derived products. Its fibre is used in textiles and paper, and it also produces edible seeds.

The southern African nation's laws only allow cultivation of cannabis for medical and scientific uses.

Authorities said last year in April that Zimbabweans could apply for licences to grow cannabis for medical and research purposes, but the process has been slow as authorities try to put in place laws to ensure cannabis farms are secure.

Plane carrying management team of US singer Pink crash-lands & burst into flames (photos)

A small plane carrying the management team for US singer Pink has crash-landed and burst into flames in Denmark.

No-one was hurt in the incident.

Danish police confirmed that the incident took place on Monday night, though they did not mention Pink by name.

Pink, who performed in Oslo Monday evening, was not on the flight.

"I have been told that it was part of Pink's team which was onboard the plane and that everybody is unharmed," Rune Lem of Live Nation Norway told Reuters.

The Cessna 560XL reportedly caught fire as it descended and crashed into turf, after which DR claimed fire crews arrived on the scene to put out flames.

According to police, the plane had flown from Oslo and that those on board included seven passengers - four US citizens, two Australians and one British national.

Police said they could not comment on the circumstances or possible causes pending an investigation.

US citizens ban Trump from visiting El Paso and Dayton after mass shootings

The grief and sorrow in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso have begun to give way to anger and frustration in advance of President Trump’s planned visits Wednesday, with local leaders and residents increasingly vocal in their assertions that presidential condolences, thoughts and prayers will not be enough.

People are signing petitions, planning protests and, in Dayton, organizing a demonstration featuring an inflated “Baby Trump” to express their discontent with a president whose anti-immigrant rhetoric was echoed by a gunman who killed 22 people in El Paso. And while the motive of the man who killed nine people in Dayton remains unclear, Trump’s silence on the issue of guns has been criticized by local officials who want action to prevent future massacres.

“He’s made this bed and he’s got to lie in it. His rhetoric has been painful for many in our community,” Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley (D) told reporters Tuesday, adding that she supported the planned protests against Trump. “Watching the president for the past few years over the issue of guns, I don’t think he knows what he believes, frankly.”

Brazillian gang leader who tried to escape from prison by dressing up as his teenage daughter found dead

A Brazilian gang leader has been found dead in his prison cell three days after a bizarre masked jailbreak plot was foiled. Clauvino da Silva was caught by guards as he tried to walk out of the Rio de Janeiro prison disguised as his teenage daughter on Saturday.

Prison authorities said it appeared the convicted drug dealer hanged himself and have opened an investigation into his death. Da Silva was 42 and serving a 73-year sentence for drug trafficking.

He wore a creepy rubber mask, a wig and a pink t-shirt as he tried to escape prison dressed as his teenage daughter, who visited him that day.

A video showing officers removing his disguise bit by bit went viral. Authorities said his plan was to leave his 19-year-old daughter behind and walk out of the prison’s main door in her place. However, his nervousness as he tried to walk out of the main entrance gave him away.

After the failed escape bid, da Silva was transferred to maximum-security in prison and was set to face disciplinary sanctions. He was a leader in the Red Command, one of the most powerful criminal groups in Brazil. His daughter and seven other visitors were detained over the foiled breakout.

The death of Da Silva will come as an embarrassment to Rio’s prison authorities.

Two arrested for currency counterfeiting in Benue

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday said it had arrested one Moses Adukwu, 33, and Iorlumun Reuben, 27, for currency counterfeiting and fraud in Benue.

Its Zonal Head, Public Affairs Department, Mrs Nwanyinma Okeanu, told newsmen in Makurdi that the case was transferred to the commission by the Benue Department of State Security Service (DSS).

Okeanu explained that Reuben, who hails from Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue, was first arrested by DSS officials who rescued him from being lynched at a public place.

“He had purchased airtime from a woman who noticed that Reuben had paid her with fake currency and alerted people around.

“When interrogated, Reuben stated that he was introduced to the business by another man still at large who also introduced him to a supplier called Moses Adukwu.

“He also confessed to still be in possession of about N18,000 fake currencies which he was unable to spend before his arrest.”
