NLC demands Sowore's immediate release, says he committed no offence

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on Federal Government to release Mr Omoyele Sowore and 26 other protesters arrested on account of the #RevolutionNow protest on Monday.

The body stated that Sowore only exercised within the room of his civic rights.

NLC General Secretary, Dr Peter Ozo-Eson in a statement on Wednesday said the right to peaceful protests, assembly and association are fully guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under sections 39 and 40.

According to him, the NLC view the violent attack on the peaceful protesters by security forces as a total violation of their fundamental rights as guaranteed by the constitution.

“Besides, peaceful protests against perceived anti-people government policies is one of the critical fundamental rights that expands the entrenchment and growth of democracy.

“Sowore and other protesters were not carrying arms against the state and we, therefore, demand their immediate release unconditionally.”

Kaduna Government gives SEVEN conditions before it would allow El-Zakzaky go on medial trip

The Kaduna State Government on Wednesday gave seven conditions to the embattled leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, known as Shi’ite, Shiekh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Zeenat, for their travel to India for medical treatment.

A Kaduna State High Court presided over by Justice Darius Khobo on Monday permitted the IMN leader and wife to travel to India for treatment following injuries they sustained during the IMN’s clash with the Nigerian Army on December 15, 2015.

The state government, which on Tuesday said it would  appeal the ruling, however, said on Wednesday that it would not seek a stay of execution because it believed that people should have access to  medical treatment.

According to the statement, the conditions to be met before the Shi’ite leader and his wife could travel included the confirmation of “his appointment with the hospital by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; an undertaking by the defendants to produce two prominent and reliable persons as sureties, one being a first-class chief/emir of national repute and the other a prominent person within Kaduna State, who shall undertake to produce the defendants whenever they are needed.”

The statement added, “The Federal Government of Nigeria shall obtain from the Government of India an irrevocable guarantee that it will not entertain any application by the defendants/applicants or any third party seeking asylum under any guise.”

District Head, two others arrested for diverting and converting government’s fertilizer, herbicide into cash

Operatives of the Sokoto Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC have arrested the Chairman of Rice Farmers’ Association of Nigeria, RIFAN, Gummi Local Government Chapter, Ibrahim Rijiya for alleged involvement in the diversion of three trailer loads of 1,800 bags of fertilizer, and a truck-load of farming herbicide belonging to rice farmers in Gummi.

Also arrested were the Council Storekeeper, Aminu Musa and Abdullahi Bashir.

Rijiya, who is also the District Head of Rijiya Gummi, Gummi LGA, Zamfara State, is also alleged to have diverted three trailers loaded with fertilizer and other supplies for their local farmers, and later sold each bag at the sum of N3,000 including other farm materials.

The EFCC had received a petition from representatives of seven different groups of rice farmers, alleging that sometimes in July 2018, the Federal Government approved and disbursed 12 trucks of fertilizer and herbicides, on loan to 83 cooperative groups in Gummi and that no member of the association fully collected all the items as approved by the government.

All efforts made by the Gummi Chapter of RIFAN to get the items back, proved abortive.

Investigation revealed that Rijiya conspired with Musa to divert and sell the three trailers of fertilizer and a truck load of herbicide to Bashir at the cost of N17.1 million and shared the money among themselves.

The suspects confessed to their roles in the crime, while the three trailers of the fertilizer have been recovered from them. Efforts are in top-gear to recover the diverted herbicide.

They will soon be arraigned in court.

Army speaks on killing of policemen to free kidnap kingpin, says they were mistaken for kidnapers

The police yesterday accused the Nigerian Army of killing three of it's men and a civilian in Taraba State, to free a notorious kidnap Kingpin, Alhaji Hamisu. The Nigerian Army have now released a statement saying, they opened fire because they thought they were kidnappers. In the statement yesterday, the police had said, the policemen identified themselves but the soldiers still opened fire and freed the man.

Read the full statement by Army spokesman, Colonel Sagir Musa below...

“The attention of the Army Headquarters has been drawn to the Press Release by DCP Frank Mba, Force Public Relations Officer, on the unfortunate incident that occurred on the 6th of August 2019 in which troops of 93 Battalion Nigerian Army Takum pursued and exchanged fire with some suspected Kidnappers who indeed turned out to be an Intelligence Response Team from the Police Force Headquarters Abuja on a covert assignment from Abuja resulting in the death and injury of some members of the Team.

“On the 6th of August 2019, the said Nigerian Army troops, while responding to a distressed call to rescue a kidnapped victim exchanged fire with the suspected kidnappers along Ibi-Wukari Road in Taraba State.

“The suspected kidnappers numbering about ten (10) and driving in a white bus with Reg No LAGOS MUS 564 EU refused to stop when they were halted by troops at three consecutive check points.

“The flagrant refusal of the suspected kidnappers to stop at the three checkpoints prompted a hot pursuit of the fleeing suspects by the troops.

“It was in this process that the suspected kidnappers who were obviously armed opened fire at the troops sporadically thus prompting them to return fire.

“In the resultant fire fight, four (4) suspects were shot and died on the spot while four (4) others sustained various degrees of gunshot wounds and 2 others reportedly missing.

“It was only after this avoidable outcome that one of the wounded suspects disclosed the fact that they were indeed Policemen dispatched from Nigerian Police, Force Headquarters, Abuja for a covert assignment.

“However, following inquiries from a Police Station officer who was asked by the commander of the Army troops whether he was aware of any Nigerian Police team being dispatched to operate in the LGA, the Divisional Police Officer of Ibi Police Division responded that he was not informed about any operation by the Nigerian Police Force Headquarters thus lending credence to the distressed call from members of the community that the suspects who turned out to be Policemen on a covert mission were rather suspected kidnappers.

“This incident is indeed quite unfortunate and could have been avoided through proper coordination and liaison as the Nigerian Police Force are partners in the fight against crimes such as kidnapping amongst myriads of other internal security threats confronting our nation of which the Nigerian Police is the lead Agency.

“In order to avert future occurrences of this nature, the Army Headquarters and the Force Headquarters of the Nigerian Police have agreed to constitute a Joint investigation Panel to be headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation Department, DIG Mike Ogbizi, to jointly investigate and report on the true circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.

“Therefore, until the Joint Investigation Panel concludes and submits its report, it will be premature to officially conclude and speak on the real circumstances that caused this unfortunate but very avoidable unfortunate incident.”

Farmer's unique proposal to girlfriend is slammed as gross and creepy by web users

A farmer reportedly proposed to his girlfriend by putting an engagement ring on a cow's udder - but the romantic gesture has been labelled 'creepy' by some.

A photo of the 'magical moment' has been shared by a woman from Singapore on the prolific Facebook group, That's it I'm Ring Shaming.

It has been inundated with comments from confused and shocked social media users - some also repulsed.

One mocked: "This is UDDERLY terrible. Sorry had to go for it. But really this is gross.

"The ring is a mess of clusters and the band is too thick. Like the person thought how can I made this ring bigger without spending any more money."

The picture shows the whopper of a rock sparkling around the cow's udder.

The original poster commented: "Shaming the ring and the whole photoshoot.

"The person is a farmer. Still doesn't excuse his bad taste. And is this considered a nipple ring? Also, the band is thicker than the center stone.

"If my eyeballs are forced to suffer through this nonsense I'm dragging everyone down with me."

One replied: "This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my whole life ever and I’ve watched friends six times."

Another added: "He’s really trying to milk the proposal."

And a third commented: "Who would think this is a good idea?"

Igbo group condemns Sowore’s continuous detention

Evang. Eliot Ugochukwu-Uko, the founder of the Igbo Youth Movement, IYM, has said the arrest and continuous detention of Omoyele Sowore “is bad news for the political health and image of Nigeria.”

In a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday, Ugochukwu-Uko, who is also the Deputy Secretary, Igbo Leaders of Thought (ILT), said the clampdown on the demonstrators “makes it difficult for the government to continue pretending it respects the democratic rights of her citizens.”
He added that “The international community could not have forgotten the leaders of the OCCUPY NIGERIA demonstration that shot down Lagos and Abuja, 7 years ago.

“The world also noted that President Goodluck Jonathan did not accuse the demonstrators of plotting to overthrow his Government.

“The world therefore wonders how and why the people who organized several high profile demonstrations against Jonathan’s government 7,6 and 5 years ago, have suddenly become intolerant of opposition voices today, simply because they are now in government and therefore at the receiving end today.

“It is truly surprising, how government believes that clampdown and intimidation will ultimately resolve Nigeria’s governance, political, and structural issues that has only increased the number of disgruntled and disappointed populace in recent time.

“This clampdown tactics deepened the secessionist agitations, popularised the Shite movement and created allies for them all over Nigeria today. This same clampdown tactics deployed once again, in a bid to avoid the necessary, unavoidable and inevitable conversation towards a new constitution and a new structure, will only turn the leaders and organizers of this demonstration, heroes and celebrities.”

He demanded that “government should release Sowore and his colleagues and engage them without further delay.

“The tension in the land today demands truthfulness on the part of government and eminent leaders of Nigeria.

“Are there still intelligible reasons and excuses why the whole country should continue to pretend we can still drag on the way we are going today?

“Frightening broad day killings of priests and kidnapping of citizens simultaneously going on all over the country, demonstrators being shot and manhandled in videos trending in social media, political, ethnic and religious divisions getting deeper by the day. Add these to the unemployment, hunger and frustration in the land, it becomes incomprehensible how any sensible leader could still continue to pretend that all is well.

“Nigeria is clearly at crossroads, eminent elders and leaders from the six geopolitical zones should as a matter of urgency, raise a committee of prominent, capable and patriotic leaders to begin the inevitable process to reinvent, reconcile, rejuvenate and recreate our country through the adoption at a referendum, a new people’s constitution, that would enshrine true federalism and devolution of power in our national life once again.

“The game of trying to avoid the truth and pretending that this military constitution will make Nigeria great by and by has become offensive.”

Uganda's pop star, Bobi Wine charged to court for 'annoying' the president

A Ugandan court on Tuesday charged pop star turned leading opposition figure Bobi Wine with "annoying" President Yoweri Museveni, his lawyer told AFP.

The singer, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, appeared in court on a prior treason charge after he and other opposition politicians allegedly stoned Museveni's convoy during a campaign rally in August last year.

"He was charged with annoying the president" in relation to the same case, his lawyer Asuman Basalirwa told AFP.

Wine, who entered parliament in 2017, has emerged as a leading critic of Museveni -- who has been in power for over three decades and has faced multiple detentions while authorities have frustrated his efforts to perform.

He announced last month that he would take on Museveni in 2021 national elections.
