Hong Kong airport shut down, flights canceled

Hong Kong airport has been shut and flights canceled due to protests.

Two police officers were seen pinning a black-clad protester to the concrete, one officer’s knee pressing the young man’s face into a pool of his own blood as he called out for help.

“I’ve already been arrested,” the man yelled. “Don’t do this, I’m begging you.”

The scene, captured Sunday night by a cameraman from news outlet Hong Kong Free Press, was jarring even in a city now accustomed to weekends awash with tear gas. It unleashed a fresh wave of anger toward Hong Kong’s police force, and the government more broadly, spurring thousands of protesters to respond by occupying the city’s airport on Monday.

By late afternoon, officials halted all departures, affecting tens of thousands of passengers at one of the world’s busiest international hubs.

After sitting in the arrivals hall for much of the day, many protesters began exiting the airport in the evening amid rumors on social media and messaging apps that police were preparing for a large clearance operation. The protesters, many dressed in black, streamed across the roads around the airport, bringing traffic to a near-standstill. Some travelers abandoned buses and taxis and wheeled bags through the traffic. Many said they were headed to a nearby bus station.

Seth Rollins wins WWE Universal Title, defeats Lesnar

Seth Rollins defeated Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam on Sunday night to win the Universal Championship for the second time.

The Architect built the perfect strategy to dethrone the champion. He used his speed advantage to relentlessly attack Lesnar and countered out of numerous German suplex attempts.

The Beast Incarnate nearly picked up the win, though. He had Rollins in position for the F-5, only for him to wriggle free and hit a super-kick. Sensing his opportunity, the challenger lined up and delivered the Stomp for the victory.

In addition to being a WrestleMania 35 rematch, Sunday’s bout was also a repeat from Extreme Rules when Lesnar successfully cashed in the Money in the Bank contract on Rollins to become a three-time universal champion.

Moment US Billionaire Jeffrey Epstein's body is wheeled into hospital (photos)

Photographs of Jeffrey Epstein's body being wheeled into hospital moments before he was pronounced dead have emerged, as it's revealed corrections officers had not checked on the pedophile for several hours before his death.

Epstein is seen wearing an orange jumpsuit and what appears to be a brace around his neck as he is pushed on a gurney into New York Presbyterian-Lower Manhattan hospital Saturday morning.

In one image, paramedics appear to be attempting to revive ashen-faced Epstein with CPR to no avail.

On Sunday evening, The Washington Post reported that Epstein had been left in his cell for hours without being checked on, when guards should have been looking in on him every 30 minutes.

A source told the outlet he should also have had a cellmate, however someone who had been assigned to move in with him was transferred on Friday. Therefore, he was alone in his cell at the time of his death.

NYC's Chief Medical Examiner has now completed Epstein's autopsy but said more information is needed before a cause of death can be determined.

Gunmen in military uniform abduct Kogi PDP chief

Gunmen, said to be in military uniform, have abducted the chairman of the Okene branch of the Peoples Democratic Party, Musa Adelabu.

The Kogi State chairman of the party, Sam Uhuotu, who disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, said the abduction of Adelabu was an indication that Kogi State was not safe to live in.

He said gunmen dressed in military uniform invaded the house of the local government party chairman and whisked him away at about 1am on Saturday. He described the invasion and abduction as one too many.

The state chairman lamented that members of the PDP in the state in the last week had been consistently harassed by men dressed in security uniforms.

He said the whereabouts of Adelabu was unknown as of press time, lamenting that the PDP Chairman has been held incommunicado.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, however, said the police were not aware of the abduction as no one reported anything of such.

“It is only when we get such a report that we will treat it as an issue, but for now, it’s not an issue,” Aya said.

TUC gives Wednesday deadline on minimum wage

The Chairman, Trade Union Congress in Ekiti State, Sola Adigun, has urged the Federal Government not to take the negotiation on the new minimum wage beyond Wednesday August 14.

Adigun, who reiterated organised labour’s commitment to the new wage, said, “The struggle for the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage is total. Anything beyond August 14 will leave labour with no choice than industrial action.”

The TUC leader in a statement in Ado Ekiti accused the Federal Government of “foot dragging the implementation even when the private sector has expressed readiness to pay.”

“Any government that is serious about fighting corruption will pay living wages to its workers,” Adigun added.

The labour leader also urged governments not to extort workers by overtaxing the little increase on the wages, saying high tax regime should be imposed on wealthy Nigerians.

Traditional rulers know kidnappers - Bishop Mike Okonkwo

The Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, Mike Okonkwo, on Sunday said traditional rulers should be held accountable for the spate of kidnapping in their domains because they know the perpetrators.

According to him, any traditional ruler whose domain records cases of kidnapping and needless killings should be suspended.

Okonkwo stated these in an interview with journalists after his sermon at the 7th edition of the Leading Edge Conference and Business Summit organised by TREM (Vision House) in the Utako area of Abuja, with the theme, ‘From mourning to dancing.’

Okonkwo said, “The people perpetrating kidnapping and other forms of violence did not drop from the sky; they came from somewhere. They are living in the same community where they do these things.

“I have spoken with some traditional rulers that these things that are happening. As far as I am concerned, if somebody comes to my town or a state where I am operating and begins to kill people indiscriminately, then I will suspend the traditional ruler.

“How can that happen? I am in charge of a place and the traditional ruler of a town and such incidents like kidnapping happen in my town. You mean I cannot do something to find out where they are coming from? Where are they and where are they hibernating?

“They shoot people in the highway and run back into the bush in a state where somebody is a governor. We have had cases where some culprits were arrested. Governors and traditional rulers should own these problems and not be crying. Every day, they are crying; I am tired of their crying, they should do something as leaders.

Okonkwo added, “The President is not in a place like Enugu; why should I be the governor of a state and be looking at the Presidency to come and handle my state for me when I have security votes?

“The menace of kidnapping is staring every Nigerian in the face. I have always said something concerning this country. When problems of Nigeria are handled from religious, tribal, political or personal sentiments, we miss the whole point.”

While advocating the restructuring of Nigeria, the cleric called on Nigerians to embark on self defence against killers and kidnappers.

Federal Government to make Tekno a scape goat over released music video

The Federal Government has promised to bring sanity into the social lives of citizens and stop the debasement of humanity and the pride of Nigerian women by making scapegoats of some persons.

The government was reacting to the controversial music video by Tekno, with scenes of four semi-nude women dancing in a moving van on the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge in Lagos.

A statement on Sunday by the Director General, National Council for Arts and Culture, a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, Segun Runsewe, said Tekno would be made a scapegoat “to teach others a serious lesson.”

He stated, “We commend the police for arresting Tekno for the shameful misconduct. The same person, who was granted bail on health grounds has gone ahead to release the controversial video. We are now warning him to desist from this shameful conduct, which is not part of our culture.

“No single person is bigger than Nigeria; whether he likes it or not, we are going to use him as a scapegoat to send strong signals that this government does not tolerate nonsense and immorality, but discipline, which is our moral principle.

“Since the offensive Tekno scam video came to the limelight, I have received hundreds of telephone calls and SMS from Nigerians at home and others in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and other parts of the world querying why such anomalies would be tolerated in Nigeria.

“Now that he has released the shameful video when investigation is still ongoing, we are going to inform security agencies to place him on their watch list, because his action is a threat to national security and a bad influence on Nigerian youths.

How Peace Mass Transit boss, Maduka Onyishi returned N2.2b mistakenly paid into his account

Leading transporter and Managing Director of Peace Mass Transit (PMT), Dr Maduka Onyishi, at the weekend displayed a rare feat of fear of God and exhibition of honesty and integrity, by returning a whopping sum of N2,219,500,000 which was overpaid into his account by the First Bank.

The amount was refunded by the business mogul in the presence of the press and other stakeholders.

A cheque bearing the overpaid amount was received on behalf of First Bank by the Business Manager, Commercial Banking, Mr Kokelu Ben and the Branch Manager, Unity Bank, Enugu Branch, Mrs Ifeoma Eleanya.

Explaining how he made discovery of the huge sum in his First Bank account, Onyishi said that he had requested for $3m from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN through Unity Bank PLC only to be paid $10m instead, which is about N3,219,500,000 representing an excess of N2,219,500,000.

He said: “The amount they paid in was N3,219,500,000 but my own money there is N1,000,000,000 so the balance is not my money. I said that I cannot invest this money and be gaining from another person’s money and I can’t also keep it. I can’t keep $7m Dollars that doesn’t belong to me.

“I told my bank to pay money into my account that I want to take 3 million dollars and they paid ten Million Dollars instead. I called them and informed them that the amount they paid to me was more than the amount I requested. They told me that the ten million Dollars was my money.

“I was angry with them. I asked them how come I have this kind of money and I’m not aware of it. I asked them how come they went ahead to invest my money without telling me so that I can use my money and then I can know how much I have.

“I told them that they have failed to give me a statement of my account even when I have demanded for it severally. I discovered later that the amount was even more than what we are talking about because there was another person I asked the bank to pay money to whom they even paid extra.

“I made enquiries and they told me that I should wait until when it is time for banks to do reconciliation, they will discover whether the fault was from First Bank, Central Bank or Unity Bank. I waited for a whole month and no one called me. I told the devil that he is a deceiver and a liar. He knows that I need money now that is why this thing is happening now.

“That’s why I said, let me invite First Bank and Unity Bank and also invite journalists. I said let me give the money to First Bank, if they find out that the money is mine, they should return it. If it belongs to Unity Bank or CBN give it to them. If it is your own, keep it. So I am giving this money to you to keep on trust.”

60-year old escapes lynching after allegedly defiling four-year old in Benue State (photo)

A 60-year-old patent medicine dealer, who allegedly defiled a four-year-old girl (name withheld) in Otukpo town in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue state at the weekend, narrowly escaped being lynched by an angry mob.

The suspect, Clement Ikechukwu Ogenyi, now in police net was believed to have lured the minor into his room and had carnal knowledge of her few days ago.

Daily Trust gathered that the victim was earlier sent to buy Vitamin C tablets from the suspect’s medicine store close to her home when the incident happened.

A relative of the minor had narrated that the unpleasant way which the girl walked back home prompted further probe that led to the discovery of her defilement, adding that the actual incident happened on Tuesday while the man was arrested on Friday.

“When the girl came home on Tuesday, we discovered she was walking funny. So, I took her inside my house and checked her after she revealed to me that Ikechukwu, popularly known as Ad’Egbo’ (meaning Baba Igbo), kissed and touched her mouth and private part with his pen!s,” the source said.

The relative added that the alleged r-pist, when confronted, denied but stressed that the delay in reporting the matter to the vigilante on Friday occurred as a result of intervention by a friend of the suspect who wanted a medical examination carried out on the victim.

But soon after the matter became public knowledge, an angry mob almost lynched the suspect as further revelations suggested that he had molested other minors in the neighbourhood in the past but the vigilante’s insistence to handover the matter to the police saved his life.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state command, DSP Catherine Anene, confirmed that the suspect was already in custody of the police in Otukpo. Anene said the suspect would be transferred to the command’s headquarters as soon as possible for further investigation and trial.

Baby shower is an invitation to witches – Counsellor

Ghanaian marriage Counsellor, Dr Mrs Charlotte Oduro has described baby shower as demonic and an invitation to witches.

“When ladies marry these days they do not think about prayer. They think about the bridesmaids they will get, the best men they will get and later the baby shower…I don’t know where that thing is coming from. Now we are picking the foreign things and we inviting witches around”, she revealed on Asempa Fm.

She observed that there are a lot of challenges in marriages lately because couple prefer to rely on other things and put God aside and focus on the irrelevant things.

“We are putting Christ aside and we are leaving our lives that is why we are seeing what we are seeing because we think God doesn’t exist again. We think we have our right to do what we are doing…my dear before you came to this world God was already there”, she said.

“Marriage is not for babies…marriage is for people who are ready to sacrifice. Marriage is for people who are prepared to support each other and go through the worse together. Christians are taking out the long suffering part of marriage”, she further said.

Robbers invade police barracks in Delta State

Residents of the ‘B’ Police Barracks along the Benin-Onitsha expressway in Asaba, Delta State have raised the alarm of incessant robbery attacks on them in recent times.

Some of the residents, who spoke to Sunday Sun on the condition of anonymity, lamented that hoodlums were coming to the barrack almost at night to rob them of their belongings.

They said the hoodlums are taking advantage of the darkness at the barrack occasioned by lack of electricity supply to perpetuate their criminal activities.

Sunday Sun learned that the transformer serving the barrack was vandalized about two months by yet to be identified persons who also made away with the cables.

“Since then, robbers have been coming here to dispossess us of our property. We have lost power generating sets, handsets laptops and personal effects to the dreaded thieves,” a female resident said.

According to her “there is uncleared vegetation at the other side of the barrack, through which they gain access to the barrack. They have been tormenting us lately. They come through the bush, and because there is no power supply, everywhere is always dark, so we cannot see them coming in.”

Another resident who also spoke, said they have contributed N3,000.00 each to fix the vandalized transformer, adding that since the donation was made over a month ago, nothing has changed.

“Our lives are under serious threat as a result of darkness which the hoodlums are taking advantage of. We are very worried at the moment. We have not heard anything since we contributed money to fix the vandalized transformer,” the source disclosed.

But another source who also lamented the precarious security situation said the robberies were being orchestrated from inside, pointing out that some over-aged children of resident police officers are still staying at the barrack.

“My brother, the situation is terrible but there are some children who are above 18 years that are still around. This is not proper. I suspect that the pockets of robberies we are experiencing are orchestrated by these young residents.

“So we are appealing to the management of the state police command to investigate this matter and save us from the hands of these tormentors,” the source pleaded.

Reacting, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adeyinka Adeleke dismissed the issue of incessant robbery attacks on the residents but admitted that the barrack has been in darkness due to the vandalized transformer.
