Obinwenne Okeke’s arrest: Bisi Alimi says “by God’s grace” is now another word for 419

Nigerian gay rights activist, Bisi Alimi has reacted to Obinwenne Okeke’s arrest in the US saying another word for 419 in Nigeria now can also mean “it’s by God’s grace”.

Reacting to the arrest of the CEO of Invictus Group, Obinwanne Okeke popularly known as Invictus Obi, Bisi took to Facebook and wrote;

''Nigerians have this stupid, fraudulent act of saying “it’s by God’s grace” when you ask them the secrets of their success. Well it is now very clear thanks to Obinwenne Okeke that god’s grace is another word for 419. There is nothing like god’s grace, stop deceiving people. It is either you have made it through hard work, connections or family wealth, and you have a right to share your secret or not to share your secret. Saying it is the grace of God is a fraud, and you are nothing but 419! Simple!''

FAAN to close runway at Enugu airport August 24

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has notified airlines, passengers and all other stakeholders that the runway at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu will be closed for major repairs.

FAAN’s General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, made this known in a statement issued in Lagos on Saturday.

The closure of the airport was coming three months after the immediate past Minister of State, Aviation, Hadi Sirika, said the airport would be closed down over the condition of the runway.

Sirika had said that the airport would be degraded for international operations because the runway length is not ideal for such operations.

Yakubu explained that the closure was aimed at resolving the existing safety and security concerns to flight operations.

The general manager said the closure of the runway would take effect by 12am on Aug. 24.

She noted that a date to reopen the runway would be communicated in due course.

FIFA ban: Samson Siasia begs for calm

Samson Siasia has appealed for calm over news of his life ban from the game by world football governing body FIFA.

Siasia was banned for life from the game following a match-fixing probe by FIFA.

Siasia, who spoke to newsmen in Abuja through an associate, Prince Opukiri Jones-Ere at the main bowl of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, said the matter was currently being looked into by his lawyer.

The former Super Eagles forward said he was hopeful of a positive conclusion of the matter.

“We want to please plead with everyone to be calm as the issue has been handed over to a lawyer and he is looking at the case.

“So, at this moment, Siasia will be unavailable to speak to the press.

“I want to also appeal to you all to be patient with us, considering the fact that he is already going through so much stress with regards to his mother’s kidnap which we are dealing with at the moment.

“We appreciate you all for your concerns and solidarity messages which have been received from the onset of this situation.

“So, my kind appeal is that you all give us some time for the lawyer to look into the case and as soon as possible, hopefully by next week, we will come up with our position and further action to be taken on the issue.

“On behalf of the family of Siasia, we want to once again thank you for your concerns and we pray that this will end well,” he said.

FIFA had said in a statement on Friday that the adjudicatory chamber of their independent Ethics Committee found the 51-year-old Siasia guilty.

President of Gabon, Ali Bongo makes first live public appearance after stroke

Gabonese President Ali Bongo has appeared live in public for the first time almost 10 months after suffering a stroke, walking with a stick as he attended ceremonies in the capital, Libreville.

The 60-year-old, whose every move has been scrutinised for signs of ill health, attended commemorations on the eve of Gabon's anniversary of independence from France in 1960, the AFP news agency reported on Friday.

The appearance marked the first time Bongo had been seen in public outside the presidential palace since his illness in October last year, except for occasions that were filmed and edited by government or state media.

A smiling Bongo spoke with security officers before laying a wreath at the tomb of Leon Mba, the first president of the small oil-rich country.

Bongo walked with a stick and an aide helped him to climb several steps. The ceremony lasted half an hour, which was shorter than in previous years.

Fans pressure stars to lead fake lives –Kcee

Singer, Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as Kcee, has said that fans usually put celebrities under pressure to lead fake lives. He told Saturday beats, “90 per cent of celebrities lead fake lives because you guys (the public) are putting them under pressure. People don’t like it when you are real; they prefer it when you lie to them, and that’s why many fake it until they make it.

“If you are very honest and truthful with them (fans), your records will have slow sales. 80 per cent of celebrities rent apartments but they would claim they bought the houses.

They go through that because fans put them under so much pressure. That you see someone on television does not mean the person is worth N1bn, so people should stop thinking that we’re living in heaven on earth.”

Having spent 19 years in the industry, Kcee admitted that he had also ‘faked’ it in the past. He stated, “Yes, I have faked it at some point.

When I started, I had to fake it. To be a celebrity, there is a perception you need to sell so that people can look up to you. I am saying this because I have gone through that and I have passed that stage. I am now successful. There was a time I was driving a Hummer jeep while my then partner, Presh, had his own. We would go to clubs and use all our money to pop champagnes. At the end of the day, we would throw the drinks away and go back home to eat noodles. We w

anted to impress people and make them see us as the most expensive artistes. When I was in Ajegunle (Lagos) and I got to a level where I needed to leave that area, I used to tell people that I was living in Ikeja, though I was still staying at Ajegunle. Before you knew it, we started living in Ikeja and from there, we moved on to bigger things. There is faith life and also fake life. My own journey was always keying into that faith.

Woman fakes cancer to get £15,000 wedding ceremony

A woman has been described as the lowest of the low as notes emerged as she tried to trick a small charity into paying for the renewal of her vows.

Wish Upon a Wedding offered to organise a £15,000 ceremony for Carla Evans, 29, who pretended to have cancer. She claimed she had bladder and thyroid cancer, and liver and kidney failure. Evans wrote online that she was dying and needed help and her posts were seen by Karen Hobbs, a volunteer from the charity who was taken in by her lies.

All the charity wanted in return was £500 towards the cost and proof of her diagnosis. However, a forged NHS letter from a hospital consultant at the Royal Gwent Hospital raised alarm bells and Mrs Hobbs launched turned private detective before contacting police.

Even when the police arrived at her home, Evans continued to lie and said she had a liver condition and required dialysis. When interviewed by police, she first denied forging the letter from the consultant but later admitted she had done.

Prosecutor Emma Harris said the cost of Evans’s ceremony would have been £15,000 but there was no actual monetary loss to the charity because of the deception.

She read a statement from Mrs Hobbs in which she said she can no longer trust people and had given up her charity work.

She said: ‘Carla had all my attention and trust, and I became very close to Carla and treated her as a friend. ‘She told me what she had gone through and I confided in her. I know how my children felt when they thought I was dying. I was hoping to make memories for her family.
