Three policemen and a driver were killed by gunmen in an attack on the convoy of Nasarawa State Deputy Governor, Dr Emmanuel Akabe.
The convoy ran into the assailants around Gako hill in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area at about 8pm.
The Deputy Governor was on his way to Abuja for swearing-in of ministers, it was learnt.
It was gathered that when the escort commander learnt that there were suspected gunmen on the road, he stopped the convoy and went with two officers and the driver to clear the way.
A source said upon hearing gunshots from an oncoming Hilux van, the gunmen laid ambush for the police officers and the driver.
The gunmen were said to have taken away the officers’ rifles after killing them, leaving a magazine behind.
The remains of the slain policemen and the driver have been deposited at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia.
State Police spokesman Othman Ismaeel said the Commissioner of Police and other senior officers were at the scene.
He said he was yet to be fully briefed on the attack.

Jack Watkin, 20, had got his own slot on a TV show after claiming to own seven lavish sports cars including two Mercedes-Benzs and a Porsche - which he apparently kept in a huge garage at his home.
He also boasted that his father paid for him to enjoy £15,000 designer shopping sprees and that he frequently flew off to lavish holiday destinations on his private jet.
But the youngster was left red faced after he accidentally crashed Jo Stringfellow's Range Rover Sport whilst out buying a rail card near his home in Alderley Edge, Cheshire.
The driver of a single decker vehicle tried to speak to Watkin about the minor shunt but although the youngster was not to blame, he refused to give his details and drove off. Inquiries revealed he was not insured to drive the £70,000 car.
Watkin, who was driving within his two year 'probation period', admitted failing to stop after an accident and having no insurance and was also ordered to pay £115 in costs and surcharges at Stockport Magistrates' Court.
His driving licence was endorsed with six penalty points. His mother, 60, denies permitting Watkin to drive the car and will face a trial in November.
Watkin became a social media star in 2016 when at the age of 17 he claimed to had a car collection boasting a Rolls Royce, Bentleys, two Mercedez-Benz, a Range Rover and a Porsche.

he Kano State command of the Nigeria Police has arrested five suspects for foreign and local currency counterfeiting in dollar, Riyadh, Cfa and Naira denominations.
The five suspects were arrested alongside 111 others for various offenses ranging from kidnapping, murder, robbery and theft.
The state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Illyasu at a media briefing said the suspects arrested over the fake currency “were apprehended based on a tip off that they were to circulate some in the state and traffick some across the border.”
He said they are experts in duping unsuspecting members of the public.
One of the suspects upon interrogation accepted to committing the offence saying “the money in local and foreign currency amounts to N170 million Naira which was sourced from Lagos state.
Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Zulum, on Monday had a curse placed on anyone in the habit of diverting food items meant for internally displaced persons in the state.
The incident took place while the governor was coordinating and supervising the distribution of food items to nearly 200,0000 IDPs in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno.
While the governor watched, an official, who had been assigned the task, raised a copy of the Qur’an and asked the wrath of God to come upon anyone fraudulently diverting food and other relief items meant for the welfare of displaced persons.
A curse was also placed on IDPs in the habit of collecting multiple rations of food to sell in markets, thereby depriving other displaced persons food to eat.
As soon as the official holding the Quaran and placing the curse began the act, dozens of adults disappeared from the long queues, raising suspicion that they could have been involved in the fraudulent practice.
The official said, “Listen to me very attentively, Governor Zulum has asked me to announce to you that from himself as governor down to humanitarian and government officials, in fact anybody at all that diverts food meant for IDPs, the curse of God through the instrumentality of the Qur’an will come upon them.
“May the wrath of God come upon anyone who has collected allocation ticket but came here to collect what is meant for others.
“You all know that food is distributed to households and everyone in the camps are part of a household.
“If you know you are not the head of a household or that you have already collected your portion, better leave the queue or incur the wrath of the Qur’an.”
A Lagos Obstetrician and Gynecologist has died while trying to save another man. Dr. Ayeni Adeyemi David died on Sunday in Surulere while trying to save his neighbor.

A South African photojournalist being held captive in Darkoush, Syria made a desperate appeal to the South African government and international community late Monday to help secure his release from gunmen who are demanding $1.5 million in ransom.
Shiraaz Mohamed, who was kidnapped in early 2017 while documenting the suffering of Syrian refugees, pleaded for assistance in a new video released by his captors.
In the video, a masked gunman wearing a military uniform is seen walking into an underground prison where he finds Mohamed sleeping on the floor. Dressed in torn clothes, Mohamed is seen being blindfolded by the gunman and later handcuffed.
He is taken to another room where his blindfold is removed and the gunman starts shaving his beard.
The kidnappers are seen throwing an orange overall at Mohamed, which he catches and later wears. He kneels down and starts speaking in the video, which surfaced on social media.
“My name is Shiraaz Mohamed, a South African photographer. My government, my friends, Dr. Fekri Shabaan and anyone watching this video who can help me, please help me,” he said.
Shabaan has been involved in negotiations with Mohamed’s captors to free him.
“My life is still in danger. I’ve been living in captivity for almost three years now. I need your help. Please free me,” Mohamed said.
He also appealed to Shabaan to cooperate with his captors, or else they will harm him.
“Dr. Fekri Shabaan -- these people are very angry with the way you are speaking with them. With the way you are doing the negotiations. My living conditions up until the last time you spoke with them were OK. My life has become very difficult. Please -- I beg you Dr. Fekri Shaban -- change the way you are speaking or negotiating with them. Listen to them and give them what they want. Please! My life is very difficult.''
Mohamed also said he fears that his captors might put a bullet in his head if his negotiators don’t cooperate.
“They are very angry at the moment. I’m not eating properly, and they say if I’m killed, you (Dr. Fekri) will be responsible for it. Help me, please! End this nightmare please!'' he said.
Ransom
In May, Mohamed's captors sent a message demanding a ransom of $1.5 million for his release, said relief agency Gift of the Givers, which is brokering his release.
Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman, the founder of the relief agency, said the captors called his organization that month to commence negotiations for the journalist's release after sending an initial video in April showing that Mohamed was still alive.
“I live in fear of my life. I am scared. The area that I am in has been bombed by the Russian air force; bombs are getting closer and closer. I need your help. Please help me,” he pleaded in the video.
Zimbabwe’s former vice president has fled from anti-corruption questioning after he was summoned over alleged criminal abuse of office, officials said.
Phelekezela Mphoko, 79, who served under long-time ruler Robert Mugabe, was due at the police in Bulawayo, the country’s second city, to record a statement on the allegations.
But he drove off as soon as officials from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) approached his car.
“We had agreed to meet at the police post at the magistrate’s court to record a warned-and- cautioned statement and have his fingerprints taken but when our officials approached his car, he drove away at high speed,” ZACC spokesman John Makamure told AFP.
“He is now a fugitive from justice,” the spokesman said, facing accusations of ordering the release from police custody of a chief executive officer and a non-executive director of the state-run roads authority.
Jeffrey Epstein signed a will two days before killing himself in his New York jail cell, US media reports say.
Court papers filed last week in the US Virgin Islands valued Epstein's estate at more than $577 million (£475m) but listed no details of beneficiaries, the Associated Press reported.
The will, details of which were first reported by the New York Post, directs Epstein's assets to be put into trust.
Epstein died while awaiting trial on s.e.x trafficking and conspiracy charges.
The New York medical examiner found that the 66-year-old, whose body was discovered on 10 August, died of "suicide by hanging".
Epstein pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and was being held without bail. He faced up to 45 years in prison if convicted.
The former financier put all of his holdings into a trust called The 1953 Trust, according to a copy of the will published by the New York Post. He signed the document on 8 August.
No details of any beneficiaries are included in the document, which lists assets including more than $56m in cash, more than $14m in fixed income investments and more than $18m in "aviation assets, automobiles and boats".
Epstein's collection of fine arts, antiques and other valuables is yet to be appraised, the document says.
Some of Epstein's alleged victims have said they will go after his assets for damages following his death.
A 21-year-old woman in El Salvador whose baby was found dead in the toilet where she gave birth has been cleared of murder during a retrial.
Evelyn Hernández had always maintained she was innocent, saying that she did not know she was pregnant and lost consciousness during the birth.
Prosecutors had asked for a prison sentence of 40 years.
Her case has been closely watched in El Salvador and abroad with women's rights activists calling for her acquittal.
El Salvador has one of the strictest anti-abortion laws in the world. Abortion is illegal in all circumstances and those found guilty face between two and eight years in jail.
But in many cases, including the one against Ms Hernández, the charge is changed to one of aggravated homicide, which carries a minimum sentence of 30 years.
"Thank God, justice has been done," she said as she stood on the steps outside the court house, free after 33 "hard" months behind bars. "My future is to continue studying and to move forward with my goals. I am happy," she said.
"I am about to explode with happiness," her defence lawyer, Bertha Maria Deleon, tweeted.
