Lobatan! Army captain that freed me is on my payroll, re-arrested kidnap suspect, Wadume alleges

Re-arrested kidnap suspect Hamisu Bala alias Wadume has confessed that he sent huge amount of money to an Army captain, The Nation reports.

The officer allegedly ordered soldiers to attack undercover Intelligence Response Team (IRT) operatives who went to Ibi, Taraba State, to arrest the suspect.

The army claimed that the battalion mistook the operatives for kidnappers before opening fire on them, killing three policemen, two civilians and leaving five persons injured.

The Nation gathered that Bala claimed to have paid huge amounts into the army captain’s bank account three weeks ago.

Besides the Captain, the suspect was said to have some other officers on his payroll.

It was gathered that the suspected kidnapper also paid his way through checkpoints.

It was learnt that Bala and his gang avoided arrest by giving N20,000 to security agents each time they passed a checkpoint.

A highly placed source said two of Balarabe’s boys, ”Babaruns”  and ”Zubairu”, called him on August 6  to tell him about Bala’s arrest.

The source said Balarabe, acting on the tipoff, directed his soldiers to “rescue” Wadume.

At the Force Headquarters on Tuesday, the suspect, who was interrogated, was said to have confessed to how Balarabe freed him.

He was said to have told detectives that the soldiers took him to the barracks, from where the Captain allegedly took him to his house, where a welder was invited to cut off the hand and leg chains.

The suspect, alleged to have run three kidnap syndicates in Taraba and Nasarawa states, had a network of major firearms suppliers, it was learnt.

The Police have recovered 13 vehicles and identified several choice properties in Taraba and Nasarawa allegedly bought through proceeds of crime.

The Police also learnt that Wadume owned over 400 cows reared by his boys, who fled with them on learning that their boss had been arrested.

Must read! Khachaturyan sisters who killed father touch Russian hearts

In July 2018 three teenage sisters stabbed and battered their father to death in his sleep, in their Moscow flat.

Investigators have confirmed the girls' father abused them physically and psychologically for years.

Charged with murder, the sisters and what should happen to them have become one of the hottest topics of debate in Russia and more than 300,000 people have signed a petition calling for their release.

On the evening of 27 July 2018 Mikhail Khachaturyan, 57, summoned Krestina, Angelina and Maria, who was a minor at the time, one by one to his room. He scolded them for not cleaning the flat properly and sprayed pepper gas in their faces.

Soon afterwards, when he had fallen asleep, the girls attacked him with a knife, hammer and pepper spray, inflicting fatal wounds to his head, neck and chest. He was found to have more than 30 knife wounds.

The young women then called the police and were arrested at the scene.

The investigation soon uncovered an extensive history of violence in the family. Khachaturyan had regularly beaten his daughters over three years, torturing them, keeping them as prisoners and sexually abusing them.

That evidence against their father is cited in their indictments.

The case quickly became a cause celebre in Russia. Human rights activists argued that the sisters were not criminals but victims, as they had no means of getting help and protection from their abusive father.

However, there are no laws protecting victims of domestic violence in Russia.

Under legal changes introduced in 2017, a first-time offender who beats a family member, but not badly enough to put them in hospital, will face only a fine or up to two weeks in custody.

Police in Russia usually treat domestic abuse as a "family issue", providing little or no help at all.

The sisters' mother, who had also suffered beatings and abuse from Khachaturyan in the past, had approached the police years before. So did the family's neighbours, who were highly afraid of him. But there is no evidence that the police acted on any of these appeals for help.

At the time of the murder the girls' mother was not living with them and Khachaturyan had forbidden his daughters from contacting her.

According to psychiatric assessments, the girls lived in isolation and had been suffering from post-traumatic stress (PTSD)

The Khachaturyan sisters' case has moved slowly. They are no longer in custody, but they are subject to restrictions: they cannot speak to journalists, nor to each other.

Prosecutors insist the killing of Khachaturyan was premeditated murder, as he was asleep and the sisters co-ordinated their actions, snatching the knife earlier that morning. The motive was revenge, they argue.

If found guilty under that charge the sisters face up to 20 years in jail. It is alleged that Angelina wielded the hammer, Maria the hunting knife and Krestina the pepper spray.

However, the sisters' lawyers say the killing was in fact an act of self-defence. Indeed, the Russian criminal code allows self-defence not only in cases of immediate aggression, but also in cases of "continuous crime", such as a hostage situation where the victim is being tortured.

The defence insists that the sisters were victims of "continuous crime" and should therefore be released. The sisters' lawyers are hopeful the case could be dropped, as the investigation has confirmed extensive abuse by Khachaturyan towards his daughters dating back as early as 2014.

Human rights activists and many other Russians now want the law changed and measures introduced such as state-funded shelters, restraining orders and courses for managing abusers' aggressive behaviour.

Popular Zimbabwean comedian, abducted from home for ‘been a critic of the government’ in her skits

A popular comedian in Zimbabwe, who has been critical of the police and government in her skits, was abducted and beaten up overnight, colleagues and rights activists say.

Samantha Kureya, known by her stage name "Gonyeti" on the comedy show Bustop TV, was taken from her home on Wednesday night by armed gunmen, according to the Zimbabwe branch of the Media Institute of Southern Africa

She has since been found and is at a police station in the capital, Harare, with her brother.

Fellow comedian Comrade Fatso tweeted: "They cannot silence the people’s laughter.”

Bustop TV has recently been doing sketches about the police banning planned opposition demonstrations to protest against the government's handling of the economy.

Her abduction comes in the wake of at least six civil society and opposition members were allegedly abducted and tortured ahead of the first planned protest that supposed to be held last Friday.

The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum says those abducted before the protests were accused of mobilising people to demonstrate.

Human rights groups blame state agents for their disappearance, but the authorities have denied their involvement.

Opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader tweeted about Gonyeti’s abduction, saying President Emmerson Mnangagwa should do more to protect Zimbabweans.

India arrests 73-year old former finance minister

Former Indian finance minister Palaniappan Chidambaram, 73, has been arrested on charges of corruption and money laundering.

He is being investigated over allegations that he cleared foreign investments in exchange for bribes while he was finance minister.

Mr Chidambaram denies the allegations.

He was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday evening amid chaotic scenes as supporters and media surrounded his car while being driven away.

The night before, officials arrived at his home in capital Delhi to question him, but said he was not at home.

Hours before his arrest, Mr Chidambaram approached the Supreme Court, a day after the Delhi high court rejected his application for bail. His lawyer told the court that the Bharatiya Janta Party-led government is carrying on a "politically-motivated vendetta" against Mr Chidambaram and his son, Karti, who is also implicated in the case.

Texas executes man over 1998 murder of teenage girl

Texas has executed a man convicted of the murder of a 19-year-old student, which he maintained he did not commit.

Larry Swearingen, 48, was executed by lethal injection for the 1998 murder of Melissa Trotter.
He said authorities ignored evidence that would have exonerated him. His last words were: "Lord forgive them. They don't know what they are doing."

Prosecutors have said they stand by the "mountain of evidence" used to convict him.

Prior to his death on Wednesday, Swearingen had received five stays of execution in the past two decades.

He was found guilty in 2000 of the abduction, r-pe and murder of Ms Trotter, who disappeared in December 1998 and was found dead in a densely wooded area in the Sam Houston National Forest in Texas 25 days later.

His lawyers have long argued that scientific evidence - including DNA under the victim's fingernails that was not Swearingen's - should have exonerated him.

But prosecutors have maintained that the evidence proved he was guilty. They said the DNA could have come from contamination of evidence

Kelly Blackburn, the assistant district attorney who has handled Swearingen's case since 2010, told The Washington Post ahead of his execution.

"An innocent man is not being executed tonight. The man who abducted, raped and strangled Melissa Trotter is being executed."

Swearingen is the 12th inmate to be executed in the US so far this year, according to data from the Death Penalty Information Center.

Man arrested in Madrid for taking upskirt videos of more than 550 women

A man has been arrested in Madrid on suspicion of taking upskirt videos of more than 550 women and posting much of the content online.

The 53-year-old Colombian man allegedly filmed the videos on a mobile phone hidden in a backpack.

Police say he then uploaded at least 283 videos to p-rnographic websites, racking up millions of views.

Many of the 555 victims - some of which were underage - were targeted on the capital's Metro system.

The man is accused of upskirting women on a daily basis since last summer when he began uploading content online.

He also allegedly operated at supermarkets, sometimes even introducing himself to his targets in an effort to get clearer shots.

Police started monitoring the suspect and arrested him while filming a woman on the Metro.

In a video posted to Twitter, the National Police called the suspect "one of the biggest predators of women's privacy".

Upon raiding his home, police uncovered a laptop and hard drives with hundreds of videos. His own website had 3,519 subscribers.

The suspect has been remanded in custody.

In Spain, upskirting is considered s-xual abuse and offenders can face jail.

Teenager sent home because her skirt was too short for work, but she won’t have it

A teenager says she was told that her skirt was 'too short' for work and she should go home and change.

Lillie Cattell has been working at a placement at Warwick Estates, a property management company in Harlow, for 11 months.

But last week she was taken to one side by a colleague, reports Essex Live.

The 18-year-old says she was told by a staff member from Human Resources that her outfit was 'unsuitable'.

Lillie said: "She told me what I was wearing was unsuitable and sent me home to change, I had frustration and anger building up inside me because I had worn the same outfit a number of times before.

"I just said okay and walked off."

Lillie, who says her parents would say 'she dressed smart', added: "I was full of embarrassment I had to log off and get my bags and explain to my manager why I was leaving.

"When I got in my car I was having a panic attack, I couldn't breathe.

"On my way home I had to pull over on the A414 because I was hysterically crying, my dad came to pick me up.

"I just feel humiliated, My dad told me I should put in a formal complaint, so I did.

"There was no sympathy or anything, I have had no contact with my manager or director.

"I am on a low wage anyway and they expected me to make a 40-minute journey home to change, that is petrol I would have had to pay for.

"I want to do well and take every opportunity that is given to me but I feel like I can't.

"I just feel like I can't win.

Lillie, from Hoddesdon, says she got offered to attend an informal meeting to discuss the situation but she declined and said she felt like she was being 'treated like a child'.

She was due to leave the company on September 4, after handing in her notice on August 5, and said she wanted to leave now because of the incident.

Manager arraigned for allegedly stealing $1m equipment from construction company

A project manager, Joseph Olowe, accused of stealing his employer’s equipment valued at $1 million, Wednesday appeared before an Igbosere Magistrates Court, Lagos.

Olowe, 42, was arraigned by the police on a two-count charge of conspiracy and theft, before Mrs. K.K. Awoyinka.

Prosecution Counsel, Mr. Moruf Animashaun, alleged that the defendant and others, at large, committed the offence in 2015, at the Lagos State Housing Project in Ilubiri, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The court heard that the defendant stole equipment which included a Banut hydraulic rig, 600 pile driver Banut and six tonner hammer all valued at $1m, property of Howard Roark Construction Company Ltd.

The offence, he added, contravened sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Olowe pleaded not guilty.

Defence Counsel, Ms D.A. Oyekun, applied for Olowe’s bail “in the most liberal terms.”

In a bench ruling, Magistrate Awoyinka granted the defendant N500, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum, among other conditions.

Devastated mum goes to her first ever funeral and it's for her own baby daughter

A devastated mum has described the heartache of having the first funeral she ever attended being for her own baby daughter.

Jade Smith had been over-the-moon to learn she was pregnant after watching her friends enjoying 'mummy stuff' together - and the first six months passed relatively smoothly.

On February 28, Jade started to notice reduced movements, yet despite mentioning it at a gestational diabetes appointment that day, doctors claimed the little one was 'thriving'.

But the 25-year-old's life 'completely changed' forever just one day later as her routine 36-week scan ended with the devastating news her baby girl had passed away.

Heartbroken by the loss of her daughter, Jade says she was then left on a labour ward to process what had happened - while mothers and their new babies surrounded her.

Despite being 25 years old, Jade had never had to go to a funeral before and faced the unimaginable experience of her first one being for her own daughter.

Now she finally feels ready to speak out and raise awareness about the dangers of reduced foetal movement and is calling on it to be treated more seriously.

Jade, from Raynes Park, London, said: "The midwife looked at me and just said 'your baby's gone'.

"My mum was screaming and had a breakdown. I didn't understand.

"I was pushing my belly expecting her to move - she'd been moving that morning.

"[After I gave birth to her and] she was placed in my arms, it was the worst feeling in the world.

"Darcie-Rose's was the first funeral I'd ever been to and for that to be my daughter, my first-born, it was very tough.

"The funeral was very soon after she was born. I was in shock the whole time. I remember speaking to the post-natal nurse after the funeral and explaining that I don't remember a lot.

"Losing her has completely changed my life."

'Super fit' Leicester Tigers rugby star dies a day after proposing to long-time girlfriend

A 'super fit' former rugby star collapsed and died of heart disease a day after proposing to his long-time girlfriend.

Steve Booth, who starred for the Leicester Tigers, tragically died the day he was due to pick up the diamond engagement ring he had ordered for his fiancee Danielle Watts.

The 42-year-old and his partner, who had two young children together, had just returned from a family holiday to Mexico and were excitedly making plans for their future.

Grief-stricken Ms Watts told Leicestershire Live that she picked up the ring he had ordered for her, adding: “I will wear it in memory of Steve.

“It’s just a shame that after all this time he won’t get to place it on my finger.”

She has since found out that he had an undiagnosed heart condition.

She added: “Everything was going so well. We had just come back from a lovely family holiday to Cancun in Mexico and he had proposed to me.

“He had proposed to me a few times over the years but we had both just laughed it off. This time he was serious.

“Steve meant it and we were excitedly making plans to go back out to Cancun to get married out there as we had had such a great time. It feels surreal that he is no longer here with us.”

The couple, who had been together for 11 years, had two children together - nine-year-old Maisie, who helped to pick out the engagement ring, and five-year-old Jack.

Psychiatrists’ strike enters fourth week

The strike action embarked on by Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, has entered its fourth week.

The doctors, who began the action on July 31, are protesting what they called “severe lack of doctors to provide seamless delivery of mental health services.”

The association’s Executive Committee reviewed the action on August 19 following key stakeholders’ intervention.

After deliberations, the resident doctors, in a statement yesterday, resolved to continue with the strike.

They are demanding “standard mental health care for our clients and quality work experience for our overworked doctors”.

They vowed that the strike would continue “until such a time the hospital management deems it fit to meet our singular demand”.

The statement reads: “The hospital management is insensitive to the plight of over 535 in-patients and 220 outpatients daily who now receive suboptimal, if not pernicious, mental health service in the 20 days that this industrial action has been allowed to fester without goal-directed interventions

“The hospital management has blatantly refused to replace the annual exit of resident doctors for the past four years.

“Instead, they have let patient load and clinical work increase significantly for hapless resident doctors whose health and academic pursuits have suffered irreparably.

“In light of the above, the hospital management’s insistence on employing only five locum doctors is highly provocative of our demands.

“It hardly improves the status quo which already puts overworked resident doctors at the brink of academic failure, health challenges and malpractice suits.”

Vowing to continue with the strike until their demand is met, they urged President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene.

“To this end, we call on Nigerian citizens and the Presidency under the leadership of President Buhari to prevail on the hospital management to do the needful in line with the Next Level Agenda of this administration,” the statement added.

Senator Shehu Sani loses at tribunal

The National and State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Kaduna has dismissed the petition of Senator Shehu Sani of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) challenging the victory of the elected Kaduna Central Senator, Uba Sani of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), for lack of merit.

Chairman of the tribunal, Justice A. H. Suleiman, in a two hour judgment on Wednesday, described the sitting as successful based on evidence presented to the tribunal.

The lead counsel to Senator Uba Sani, Frank Ikpe, said the tribunal upheld the election of the APC senator based on the evidence before it.

Also commenting on the tribunal’s judgment, the second lead counsel to Senator Uba Sani, Sulaiman Shu’aibu, described the judgment as appropriate, urging those that are not satisfied with the verdict to go to the Court of Appeal.
