The authorities of Benue State University on Monday shut the institution and asked students to vacate the campus latest 4:00 p.m.
In a statement issued by the Registrar of the University, Dr Mfaga Modom, the university said that the closure was necessary to avoid breakdown of law and order in and around the campus.
The closure followed the protest embarked on by the students against the five Point Grading System.
The students as early as 6.00 a.m. blocked the two gates of the university located along the busy Makurdi/Gboko Highway.
The students were seen singing and calling on the university management to reverse the policy on grading system to the old practice of calculating Cumulative Grade Point Average.
To avoid breakdown of facilities on the campus, armed security personnel, comprising Police, Civil Defence and DSS were drafted to the campus.
A 300-level student in the Department of Political Sciences, Peter Agbo, said the University management began the implementation of the new grades without notifying the students.
He alleged that the school wanted to implement the policy mainly to victimize some students whom they think are brilliant but are not in the good books of some lecturers, revealing that already 150 of such students had been pencilled down to recalculate their point grade based on the new arrangement.
“To me, this is not too good for some students particularly those in 400 level who are about to graduate”, he said.
But in a separate statement, the Registrar of the University, Dr Mfaga Modom said, the management of the University was aware of the grievances of the students especially as it relates to the Five (5) Point Grading System.
She said that the University Senate had constituted a Committee to consider the appeal by the students for the recalculation of their previous results from Four (4) Point Grading System to Five (5) Point Grading System and submit its recommendations.
She stated that the committee requested and received memoranda from the university community including the students; met several times and its report is to be considered at the forthcoming meeting of Senate scheduled for Thursday, 5th September 2019 before students started to protest.
Mrs Modom maintained that the students must acknowledge the fact that the University had already complied with the directive by the National Universities Commission by reverting to the 5-Point Grading System with effect from the 2018/2019 academic session.
“In the interim, the University Management met the students and informed them of the efforts of the Senate and appealed for their patience to enable the committee to complete the assignment.
“Management also, through the Dean of Students issued a circular informing the students of its efforts.
“The closure of the University gates by students on account of this issue is therefore unwarranted. Management wishes to reiterate that it can only consider their appeal when the report of the Senate Committee is received.
“Management, therefore, appeals to students to be law-abiding and respect constituted authority, policies and properties of the University and allow due process to prevail”, the statement read in part.
The 123 men from Jigawa State who were detained by the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences (Enforcement Unit) have sued the Lagos State Government for unlawful detention and seizure of their motorcycles.
Other respondents include the Lagos State Commissioner of Police and the Chairman of the task force, Mr. Yinka Egbeyemi as well as the Attorney-General of Lagos State.
The men were intercepted along Moshalashi Road, Agege alongside 48 motorcycles in a truck, which was coming from Jigawa State but were later released.
On Monday, however, Abdullahi Yakubu on behalf of himself and the other men filed a suit Federal High Court, Lagos demanding N1bn reparation from the state government for profiling and detaining them.
The arrest had sparked a heated debate on social media over the manner in which the men were paraded and interrogated in front of the media.
In the suit with number FHC/L/CS/1519/19, the 123 men demanded the payment of N1bn as damages.
They asked for a declaration by the court that the prevention of the applicants numbering 123 from moving into Lagos State of Nigeria by the state government without prima facie incriminating evidence against the applicants constitute a flagrant violation of the 123 men’s right to move freely throughout Nigeria as guaranteed by section 41 of the Constitution Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
They also want a declaration of the court that the detention of the men in the absence of prima facie incriminating evidence against them constitutes a violation of their right to personal liberty protected by section 35 of the Constitution Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
The 123 men represented by Mr. Abba Hikima and other lawyers, also prayed the court to mandate the respondents to release to their seized motorcycles numbering 48, the truck conveying them, their wears and any other goods belonging to them in custody.
It states further, “An order of this honourable court awarding the sum of N1,000,000,000.00 (One Billion Naira) payable by the respondents jointly and severally to the applicants as reparation.
“An order of this honourable court directing the respondents to tender unreserved public apology to the applicants.”

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Sunday tasked President Muhammadu Buhari to use education to solve poverty problem in the country.
ASUU described the statement credited to the President, citing education as a way to end poverty, as a political statement.
The Chairman, ASUU, University of Ibadan, Prof Deji Omole, on Sunday, in Ibadan, said Nigerians did not need the President to tell them what had been proven by serious countries as a way to edge out poverty.
The ASUU leader, who expressed pessimism about the ability of the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, to transform the education sector, stated that Adamu was not different from his employer.
Omole recalled that Adamu had promised to declare a state of emergency in the education sector but refused to live up to his words.
He said, “He is back to a familiar terrain; we are also in that same terrain. He spent more than three years in his first term and made so many political statements which were never implemented.
“This administration has demonstrated its hatred for education by constantly reducing the budgetary allocation to education. Most of their policies are anti-university.
“For example, in UI today, it’s almost impossible to recruit new workers; meanwhile, people are dying as a result of excessive workload and people are retiring and you are not employing new people.
“We all know, all developed nations have been able to solve their problems through education and that is why we have always been engaging different governments that the only antidote to poverty is putting adequate attention to educating the masses.”

Oh dear! An auto dealer, MJ Autos has called Bobrisky out over a fake surprise he had wanted to pull on his 28th birthday. Bob was going to present a range rover he is yet to fully pay for to himself as a surprise gift from bae, but that stunt failed when the police sealed up his birthday venue.
As if that was not enough. The auto dealer and his agent had to write police series of letters before the SUV which was already parked at the venue of the party was let out.
Calling him out his instagram and begging he pays, MJ Autos who says he supports Bob and never wanted to call him out until he blasted him wrote;
''#bobrisky222 please pay your balance and you get you car re-delivered immediately.
.
Have been more than nice in condoling your attitudes and still very nice to tell my agent to go ahead and deliver the car to you just so you can use it for your birthday.
.
My agent had to go to the police station to write series of statements and provide all necessary documents before the car was released to him; as the location it was kept was already sealed up by the police.
.
We had a written agreement and it states that we still have full security hold on the car until all payments has been fully made. Gave you series of discount on this particular car just to support your brand.
.
For the record we’ve delivered cars to over two hundreds Nigerians and it’s always been a very smooth and hassle free transaction.
.
I know you are really tensed right now and am not happy either about what happened about your birthday. I told you i will still send my support whichever way I can.
.
So I don’t really get the part of bad luck! Iet me just assume its anger that made you say all this. Peace and love Bob! #mrjayautos''
OH DEAR, SO MUCH GOING O IN HIS LIFE IN JUST ONE WEEKEND!
A millionaire model agency boss thought to have vital evidence about the Jeffrey Epstein s-x scandal has vanished.
Investigators who want to interview Frenchman Jean-Luc Brunel, 72, say he is a “ghost who has disappeared without trace”.
It is understood enquires are being made in Brazil, the US and Europe.
French prosecutors have opened their own inquiry into the crimes of American financier Epstein, 66.
The convicted paedophile, a friend of Prince Andrew, committed suicide in jail on August 10 while awaiting trial on child sex trafficking charges.
Brunel, who helped found the New York model agency MC2 and is credited with finding supermodels such as Christy Turlington, has strenuously denied any wrongdoing.
It was claimed Russian ex-model Svetlana Pozhidaeva, who was signed to MC2, was pictured at Epstein’s New York mansion in 2010.
Ms Pozhidaeva, the daughter of a Lieutenant Colonel in the Red Army, has denied it is her in the photo.
A day before it was taken, Prince Andrew was photographed standing in the doorway of Epstein’s home.
One of Epstein’s victims, Virginia Roberts, has alleged she slept with the Duke of York three times, which he has strongly denied.
He has also denied knowing anything about Epstein’s illegal activities.
Roberts also claimed to have slept with Brunel “many times” when she was aged 16 to 19.
Many of the girls said to have been used by Epstein were allegedly “sourced” in Paris, where the American owned a £7million apartment.

Two women in hijabs suffered a string of injuries including suspected broken ribs and internal bleeding during a racist attack on the London Tube.
The horror assault happened during the evening rush hour at North Ealing station.
British Transport Police (BTP) are investigating after the two victims, one in her 60s and the other in her 30s, were seriously injured.
The women were racially abused before the attacker lashed out.
Both had to be taken to hospital after the incident.
Investigators have released a CCTV image of a woman they believe could help with their enquiries.
In a statement, police said: "The incident happened at 5.30pm on August 23.
"Two women, aged in their 60s and 30s, are reported to have made verbally abused for wearing hijabs.
"They were then attacked. Both were taken to hospital with the older victim suffering possible broken ribs and the younger suffering a black eye, bruising and internal bleeding."
The statement ended adding for public help to get the attacker.
Thousands of Hong Kong university and school students swapped classes for democracy demonstrations on Monday, the latest act of defiance in an anti-government movement that has plunged the Chinese-ruled city into its biggest political crisis in decades.
The boycott follows a weekend marred by some of the worst violence since unrest escalated more than three months ago, with protesters burning barricades and throwing petrol bombs, and police retaliating with water cannon, tear gas and batons.
Riot police on Monday patrolled the subway, known as the MTR, where some of the most violent clashes have erupted.
Hundreds of students gathered outside the Chinese University of Hong Kong, one of the city’s largest, taking turns to make speeches from a stage with a black backdrop embossed with “Students in Unity Boycott for our City”.
“I come here just to tell others that even after summer holidays end we are not back to our normal life, we should continue to fight for Hong Kong,” said one 19-year old student who asked to be identified as just Chan.
“These protests awaken me to care more about the society and care for the voiceless.”
On the first day of the new school year, secondary students were seen singing, chanting and forming human chains, some wearing hard hats and masks. Many primary schools were closed because of a typhoon warning.
Students have turned out in significant numbers at recent rallies and were also prominent during the 2014 pro-democracy “Umbrella Movement” that foreshadowed the current unrest.
