Xenophobic attacks: What Abacha, IBB, Obasanjo would have done- Fani Kayode

Femi Fani-Kayode has revealed what late General Sani Abacha, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, Olusegun Obasanjo and others would have done during a time like this if one of them were to be in power.

While revealing this, FFK said “had it been Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, Murtala Mohammed, Sani Abacha, Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida or Goodluck Jonathan, there is no way Nigerians will be slaughtered in South Africa without a real threat of war. Muhammadu Buhari has proven himself to be a weak leader, a chicken-hearted scarecrow, a toothless bulldog and a bloody coward!”

In a second tweet, the former minister said;

“Look at what Buhari has reduced us to! The South Africans will pay dearly for this affront! If I were President of Nigeria, no South African or South African company would feel safe in Nigeria at this point. Buhari will not be there forever and we have long memories! They will pay,” he said.

#Xenophobia: Protest, looting becomes the order of the day in Nigeria

Valuable items were looted from M$G Global Communications, Affordable Boutique and other shops inside Adeniran Ogunsanya Mall in Surulere, Lagos State, on Tuesday night by some suspected social miscreants .

M&G sells phone sets.

Some youths had staged a protest around the Mall, abutting Shoprite. The protesters also picketed MTN and Multichoice offices to condemn the recent attacks on some Nigerians and destruction of their properties by some South Africans.

The targeted companies in Nigeria are South African owned. But they were not the ones looted Tuesday night.

A policeman who begged for anonymity told NAN that the looted shops belonged to Nigerians.

Earlier on Tuesday, the police from the Surulere Police Division prevented the attack. It was not clear how and why they dropped their guard.

It was gathered that the mob capitalised on the handful security personnel on ground and broke into the mall to loot.

Later, the security personnel called for reinforcement, which helped to disperse the looters.

At the Circular Mall in Jakande, police and military officials kept away the hoodlums planning to attack the mall.

Up till 7pm, the hoodlums were still gathered in groups around the area.

‘We want to burn Shoprite”, one of them told P.M.News reporter, who explained that the mall is not owned by Shoprite and that if they destroy the place, a Nigerian-owned insurance company would probably compensate the company.

#Xenophobia attacks: Banky w says this is not the SA Mandela fought for

Banky w has reacted to the continuous  #Xenophobia attacks in South Africa saying this is not the South Africa Mandela fought for. He made this known in four tweets writing;

''This is not the SA that Mandela fought and sacrificed for, Banky w reacts to Xenophobia attack

''The people that South Africans look up to should PLEASE speak up and  denounce #Xenophobia. The Government, business people, athletes, artists, media personalities, and even the average citizens have a responsibility to stand up for justice the way the world stood up for SA (2)

''This is not the SA that Mandela fought and sacrificed for. This is not the SA that a lot of us have come to know and love. I just watched a video of a man burnt alive in front of a crowd. It's sick, and heartbreaking. "Hell must be empty because all the demons are here". Sigh (3)

''Africa's problem is AFRICANS. Some in Government, some in the general population.. but Africa's problem is Africans. I keep pushing for the day that the rest of us will rise to become our solution. May God help us. And may we realize that Heaven helps those who help themselves.

17-year old boy goes blind after eating only french fries, pringles, white bread and sausage for years

A 17-year-old boy who lived on chips, Pringles and processed ham has gone blind because of a lack of vitamins in his diet.

The fussy-eating teenager from Bristol, who is now 19, hadn't eaten a fruit or vegetable in a decade.

His only daily meal was a portion of chips which was accompanied throughout the day by crisps, deep-fried sausages and the occasional ham sandwich.

The unnamed student, who has had to drop out of studying IT at college, was deficient in several key vitamins including vitamin B12, copper and vitamin D.

He slowly lost his sight over the course of three years, starting when he was 14, due to a condition known as Nutritional Optic Neuropathy (NON).

He was a normal height and weight but the lack of vital nutrients caused irreversible damage to the nerve in the back of his eyes, leaving him registered blind.

Speaking to the Times, he said: 'I've become very isolated. When I was little I'd go out and play football with my friends. I'm too frightened to do that now.'

He believes that doctors he pleaded for advice could have helped him earlier by providing help with his diet, which they only began to question at a progressed stage.

'When I asked for help, they didn't listen to me,' he added.

His mum, who quit her pub job to look after him, told the Telegraph: 'His sight went downhill very fast - to the point where he is now legally blind.

'He has no social life to speak of now. After leaving school he got into college to do a course in IT. But he had to give it up because he could not see or hear anything.

'He would love a job - but he has not been able to find anything he can do. I had to quit my job in a pub. I now look after him full-time.'

The optic nerves are made up of millions of fibres and are responsible for transferring visual information from the retina to the brain.

When the fibres become damaged due to a lack of vitamins, the optic nerve loses its ability to relay messages to the brain.

Nutritional optic neuropathy is a slow, painless condition that sees the gradual decrease in vision.

It is sometimes accompanied by colour-vision dysfunction and if left untreated leads to permanent blindness.

B Vitamins, found in whole foods and leafy vegetables, are vital to maintaining good eyesight.

Medics at Bristol Eye Hospital revealed the tale in the Annals of Internal Medicine's case reports.

It's lead author Dr Denize Atan told MailOnline: 'He has only eaten chips, Pringles, sausages and other processed foods since he was primary school age.

'It's the most serious case I've ever seen of blindness caused by junk food.

'He was clearly getting enough calories, but not nutrients. When the problems started he seemed, on the outside, like a health 14-year-old boy.

'His family actually bought him the chips because if he didn't eat them then he wouldn't eat anything. They tried hard to introduce veg and fruit to his diet.

'He is now registered blind and can only read top letter on an optician chart. He also has a blind spot in the middle of his eyes.

'He has maintained his peripheral vision, so he is still able to navigate. But he has caused permanent damage to the optic nerve, which can't repair itself.'

She revealed the teenager has still not changed his diet, but is receiving treatment for an eating disorder and taking vitamin supplements.

The prosecuting counsel consequently prayed the court to set a date for hearing and applied that the accused be remanded in the EFCC custody, arguing that the accused is still under investigation by the EFCC and might jeopardize the investigation if remanded elsewhere.

Justice Idris remanded Abba Dalori in EFCC custody and adjourned the matter to Wednesday September 4, 2019, for the determination of the formal bail application.

Recall that EFCC arrested Abba Dalori for allegedly collecting N7billion from 20,700 potential investors.

He allegedly lured unsuspecting investors with returns on Investment (RoI) as high as 135% and, in some cases, 200%.

On Thursday, 20 June, 2019, he was remanded in Kuje Prisons, Abuja by Justice Venchak S. Gaba of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT High Court, in Kwali for obtaining money by false pretence from one Abubakar Hajara.

25 dead, many missing in California boat fire

Twenty-five bodies have been recovered on the ocean floor after a boat was destroyed by fire off the coast of California, the US Coast Guard says.

Nine people are still missing. Five crew members had escaped earlier.

The fire started in the early hours of Monday. The boat was anchored just metres off Santa Cruz Island, about 90 miles (145km) west of Los Angeles.

The Conception - a commercial diving boat - is now submerged. The cause of the blaze is so far unknown.

At a news conference, Sheriff Bill Brown said 39 people were on board the vessel when fire broke out.

Coastguard services overheard a mayday call at 03:30 local time (10:30 GMT) on Monday, saying that the boat was engulfed in flames, according to Capt Monica Rochester, the coastguard sector commander for Los Angeles/Long Beach.

Reports suggested some passengers could have been trapped below deck.

Those who escaped the fire may have been sleeping in the main cabin of the boat rather than below.

They were awake and had jumped off the boat's bridge before a Good Samaritan vessel called The Grape Escape arrived to rescue them. One survivor has minor injuries.

Sheriff Brown speculated that oxygen or propane tanks could have exploded during the fire, but there was no sign this sparked the blaze.

"Nothing in the [mayday] broadcast from the vessel... indicated there was an initial explosion," he said.

Again, Daddy Freeze mocks Oyedepo over tithe

Daddy Freeze has mocked Bishop David Oyedepo of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, over his comment that God allowed Satan to torment Job in the Bible because he did not pay tithes.

Oyedepo had in one of his messages which is being circulated online told his church members that the reason Job suffered losses was because he was not a tither. He said there was no single place where Job was recorded to have paid tithe.

While noting that Job gave to the poor, he said because he did not tithe he did not enjoy God’s protection. Reacting to this on his Instagram page, Daddy Freeze mocked Oyedepo saying;

“How can he speak with such ignorance when Satan himself accused God of protecting Job too much?”

He then quoted from Job 1:9-11, which says: “Satan replied to the LORD, “Yes, but Job has good reason to fear God. You have always put a wall of protection around him and his home and his property. You have made him prosper in everything he does. Look how rich he is! But reach out and take away everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face!,” to buttress his point.

Ibori’s money launderer, Ghana's Ellias Preko fined N3.2bn by UK court

Ellias Preko, a Ghanaian and former Goldman Sachs banker, who helped James Ibori, former governor of Delta hide a fortune in offshore accounts has been ordered by a UK court to pay back £7.3m(N3.2 billion) to the British treasury or face 10 years more in jail.

The order was slammed on Preko on Monday by Judge David Tomlison, following a confiscation hearing. Preko has three months to repay the money or he will return to jail. He was jailed for four and a half years back in 2013 for his role in the scheme.

Preko, a Harvard graduate, who is now 60 years old was believed to have abused his ‘gold-plated credentials’ to launder at least £3m plundered by Ibori, from Delta state treasury.

Ibori, who governed Delta between 1999 and 2007 was estimated to have pocketed up to £160 million from government treasuries, depriving the state’s poor of the cash.

Preko, who represented himself, told the court in a previous hearing much of the cash had been spent on election campaigning back in his native Ghana.

He said he had run as candidate for the centre-right NPP party back in the mid-2000s.

Preko explained that Ghana is predominantly a cash based society and that few receipts exist for his campaign spending.

Judge opens account in maid’s name, saves N870m in 11 years

A Nigerian judge, Margaret Igbeta, who retired as president of the Benue state Customary Court of Appeal, opened an account 11 years ago at Ecobank, in the name of her maid and saved N870million($2.4million) during the period.

Her bulging bank account understandably drew the attention of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which has rushed to the Federal High Court in Abuja for the interim forfeiture of N840 million left in the account.

Igbeta is being accused by ICPC investigators of opening an account in the name of her housemaid, Theodora Atsu on the 5th of March, 2008, with an initial deposit of N8 million.

Mrs. Rasheedat A. Okoduwa, spokesman of the commission said Monday night: “The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has requested a Federal High Court, Abuja, to order the interim forfeiture of N840 million traced to a retired President of the Benue State Customary Court of Appeal, Mrs. Margaret Igbeta.

“The Commission, in an ex-parte motion filed at the court, said that the order would stop Mrs. Igbeta from accessing the money alleged to have been obtained through fraudulent activities in the course of her official duties.

“ICPC noted that the request for the interim forfeiture is pursuant to Section 48 (1), (2) and (3) (a) and (b) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 and Section 6 (6)(a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

“The retired President of the Customary Court of Appeal was accused of operating a proxy fixed deposit account in the name of her maid, one Theodora Atsu, with Ecobank Plc, where she accumulated N870, 321, 492.15 between 2008 and 2019.

“She was said to have opened the account with her passport and the name of Atsu on the 5th of March, 2008, with an initial deposit of N8 million.

“She subsequently made several other huge deposits including N123, 745, 925.57 and N5 million, in the months of March and May, 2008.

“It was also noted by the Commission that the money was far above her legitimate earnings both as a judge and President of the Customary Court of Appeal within the period that the account was operated and would have used to meet the infrastructural needs of the citizens and development of the nation.

Australian Anglican church set to bless first gay marriage

The first official same-sex blessing of a civilly-married couple will occur within two weeks in an Australian Anglican church.

This follows the passing of a new regulation to allow holding a same-sex blessings by the Wangaratta Synod (regional council) of the Anglican Church of Australia on the weekend. The vote was 67 for, 18 against, with one abstention.

“The first same-sex service is likely to occur in two weeks’ time,” Muriel Porter reports in the Melbourne Anglican. “The retired Diocesan Archdeacon, the Revd Dr John Davis, and his partner of 20 years, the Rev’d Robert Whalley, are planning a [non-church] marriage, to be blessed in a service in the small church at Milawa on 14 September.” Both men are in their seventies.

Describing the future blessing in ‘a packed country church,’ Davis says his Bishop will be there.

“I clearly declare my own position. Fr Rob Whalley my partner of twenty years and I will shortly marry under the law of the land,” Davis has Facebooked. “Following on after that, we hope to be asking the God we honour and those who care for us, to continue to bless us in our ongoing life together. In that ‘packed country church’”.

Wangaratta’s Bishop John Parkes, a strong supporter of the move is set to retire later this year, possibly after marrying Davis and Whalley.

The new regulation “provides for ‘persons married according to the Marriage Act 1961’, the Commonwealth Marriage Act amended in 2017 to allow same-sex marriages,” according to Porter. “The Wangaratta regulation includes a prescribed liturgy for the blessing service.” The Anglican Church does not permit same sex weddings which is why a blessing ceremony is planned.

Seun Egbegbe spends 30 months in jail

Nollywood film-maker and producer, Olajide Kareem, aka Seun Egbegbe, has spent over 30 months (two years and six months) in prison after he failed to meet the N5m bail granted him by the Federal High Court in Lagos.

He was incarcerated on February 10, 2017.

The 43-year-old had been arrested for allegedly obtaining money by false pretences from no fewer than 40 bureau de change operators in different parts of Lagos from 2015 to 2017.

Egbegbe allegedly swindled the BDC operators out of the money by claiming that he had naira to change into foreign currencies and vice versa.

The erstwhile Lagos socialite had been arraigned by the police for a series of fraud involving N39,098,100, $90,000 and £12,550.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Rotimi Oladokun, on Sunday confirmed that Egbegbe was still in custody, adding that his freedom was conditioned on his bail terms.

“It is not our fault. It is simply because he has not met his bail conditions,” he said.

Benue varsity shut as students protest CGPA grading

The authorities of Benue State University on Monday shut the institution and asked students to vacate the campus latest 4:00 p.m.

In a statement issued by the Registrar of the University, Dr Mfaga Modom, the university said that the closure was necessary to avoid breakdown of law and order in and around the campus.

The closure followed the protest embarked on by the students against the five Point Grading System.

The students as early as 6.00 a.m. blocked the two gates of the university located along the busy Makurdi/Gboko Highway.

The students were seen singing and calling on the university management to reverse the policy on grading system to the old practice of calculating Cumulative Grade Point Average.

To avoid breakdown of facilities on the campus, armed security personnel, comprising Police, Civil Defence and DSS were drafted to the campus.

A 300-level student in the Department of Political Sciences, Peter Agbo, said the University management began the implementation of the new grades without notifying the students.

He alleged that the school wanted to implement the policy mainly to victimize some students whom they think are brilliant but are not in the good books of some lecturers, revealing that already 150 of such students had been pencilled down to recalculate their point grade based on the new arrangement.

“To me, this is not too good for some students particularly those in 400 level who are about to graduate”, he said.

But in a separate statement, the Registrar of the University, Dr Mfaga Modom said, the management of the University was aware of the grievances of the students especially as it relates to the Five (5) Point Grading System.

She said that the University Senate had constituted a Committee to consider the appeal by the students for the recalculation of their previous results from Four (4) Point Grading System to Five (5) Point Grading System and submit its recommendations.

She stated that the committee requested and received memoranda from the university community including the students; met several times and its report is to be considered at the forthcoming meeting of Senate scheduled for Thursday, 5th September 2019 before students started to protest.

Mrs Modom maintained that the students must acknowledge the fact that the University had already complied with the directive by the National Universities Commission by reverting to the 5-Point Grading System with effect from the 2018/2019 academic session.

“In the interim, the University Management met the students and informed them of the efforts of the Senate and appealed for their patience to enable the committee to complete the assignment.

“Management also, through the Dean of Students issued a circular informing the students of its efforts.

“The closure of the University gates by students on account of this issue is therefore unwarranted. Management wishes to reiterate that it can only consider their appeal when the report of the Senate Committee is received.

“Management, therefore, appeals to students to be law-abiding and respect constituted authority, policies and properties of the University and allow due process to prevail”, the statement read in part.
