Xenophobia: Presidency Faults S.A Envoy, Insists Nigerians Were Targeted

The Presidency has insisted that contrary to the claims of the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Bobby Monroe, foreigners, particularly Nigerians, were targeted in the recent attacks in South Africa.

Mr Munroe had stated on Tuesday during a media briefing with Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, that the attacks in South Africa are not xenophobic neither are they targeted at Nigerians.

According to him, they were only ‘sporadic acts of violence’.

He also stated that businesses belonging to other South Africans were equally affected in the violence.

However, addressing the issue on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disagreed with the comments, stating that the attacks were not sporadic.

“I disagree with the South African ambassador who says it is sporadic attacks…it’s not. If it was sporadic attacks, why were South Africans not attacked?

“It was targeted at foreigners, Nigerians particularly,” he said.

Adesina further stated that it was clear that the attacks did not involve only Nigerians against Nigerians as earlier claimed by the South African President.

“President Ramaphosa was here some months back and we clearly heard him when he said not all the violence was between South African against Nigerians that most of the times, it was Nigerians against Nigerians.

“But what has happened these past few days has shown that this is not Nigerians against Nigerians.

“This is clearly South African against Nigerians and this has shown us that there is xenophobia,” he said.

Mr Adesina, however, stated that the Federal Government would continue to demand the protection of Nigerians, a failure of which “stronger measures” will be taken.

Naira Marley’s songs, lifestyle influenced me –16-year-old cybercrime suspect

Gombe State Police Command on Tuesday paraded some suspected cyber fraudsters. One of them, 16-year-old Gabriel Michael, said he was influenced by the lifestyle and songs of a Nigerian musician, Naira Marley.

16-year-old Gabriel Michael, who was arrested by the Gombe State Police Command for cyber fraud.

Michael, who was paraded on Tuesday by the police, told  one of our correspondents that he took to cybercrime from watching up-and-coming Nigerian musician, Naira Marley, on the screen.

“I learnt hacking through tutorials on YouTube; for so many months I was at it. The lifestyle of a Nigerian musician, Naira Marley, the way he spends money influenced me. Marley talks about being a Yahoo boy (cyber fraudster). My addiction to computer started at the age of seven,” Michael said.

Among Naira Marley’s few known titles,  the song, “Am I a Yahoo Boy?” may be the most viral.

The lyrics and the video of the song revolve around cybercrime and a race against law enforcement agents.

Though the police put his age at 18, Michael, in a chat with one of Punch correspondents, insisted he was 16 years old.

He said, “I’m 16 years old, from Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe State. I finished from the Nationwide Academy in Gombe. I was arrested for hacking into someone’s account.”

In his response to how he succeeded in hacking account, he said, “I generate software like IP protocol, Angry IP scans, linos and I use them to do the job.”

Michael, however, begged for mercy, saying “I regret my actions. I pray to be pardoned, so that I can use my talent in other to work for them (law enforcement agency). I can channel my ideas to legal ventures but the challenge has always been that nobody encourages one to use his talent to do good things. For instance, friends will push you to do so because you are making money. My ambition is to work hard to become a member of the Department of Security Services.”

Michael added that his parents did not know about his criminal activities.

“I hide under the cover of my job; I’m into aluminum works. My parents did not suspect my heinous activities,” he said

Michael narrated how he hacked into the bank account of his victim, Deborah Tanko, from whose account he allegedly withdrew N187,000.

Snakes take over Auchi Poly, as female student flees bathroom n-ked

Palpable fear and anxiety have gripped staff and students of Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, as dangerous snakes have allegedly taken over the institution.

Students, canteen operators and other members of staff who work or reside on the campuses of the federal tertiary Institution, have reportedly sighted the dangerous and poisonous visitors now laying ambush in ceilings, offices, hostels, bathrooms and other places.

It was gathered that thick darkness occasioned by power outage worsened the situation, making it difficult for the hapless students to see the lurking snakes.

The students, who described the situation as worrisome, called on the management of the institution to fumigate the entire campuses, to forestall a possible attack on the students.

It was learnt that a female student who was bathing, narrowly escaped being bitten when a snake suddenly dropped from the ceiling of the bathroom. She had to run out of the bathroom naked.

A student who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they now lived in their hostels in constant fear and anxiety.

“We now live in fear over the recent discovery of snakes in the hostels.

“We now live in fear in this hostel. Snakes were found and killed yesterday in one of the girl’s hostels. Snakes are now everywhere and nothing is being done about it.

“Somebody was bathing and a snake almost fell on her. She ran out naked, she was very lucky.

“Snakes are just everywhere as you see this hostel, even in the portals, offices, snakes have taken over, we are just confused. They will not give us light to see or read despite the fact that some of us are writing exams.

“We are begging the school management to come to our aid and fumigate everywhere so we can be peaceful,” she said.

The Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic, Mr. Mustapha Osahiobugie, denied the alleged invasion of reptile in the institution.

He disclosed that two giant generators were set aside for the students to ensure adequate power supply in their hostels.

“Whether there is BEDC power or not, we have two giant generators set aside for students alone so that they can have adequate power supply.

“Our hostel building is two storeys. We do spot check every week and none of our ceilings is compromised. The roofs are well covered, so, how will a snake now fall from the ceiling?

“On the environment as it relates to sanitation, the horticulture staff are fully in charge, but I will inform them right away to go and check the sports complex and every area concerned,” he added

Drag her by her lacefront! Fan tells NotJustOk founder to disrespect Kate Henshaw

Kate Henshaw and Notjustok co-founder Ovie have had a war of words on twitter. It started when Kate Henshaw reacted to the attacks on Nigerians by South Africans saying; ''We are responsible for how people treat us...''

Many Nigerians find the tweet tasteless and Ovie also expressed his mind. While telling her followers she was ready for them, Kate however belittled them by telling them she won't reply anyone who has below 50,000 followers. So most people's tweet against her didn't get a response.

Ovie also expressed his mind, saying she should know better, but Kate went in on him. In a second tweet Ovie warned he was a big admirer but still respects her tho. But some of his fans won;t have it, and wonder why Ovie still called her a big sister after their alteration. A user suggested Ovie should have dragged her by her lacefront INSTEAD!

EFCC arrests 60 Internet fraudsters in Akwa Ibom

The Uyo zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said on Tuesday that it had arrested over 60 Internet fraudsters and secured 37 convictions since its inception in the state.

The Zonal Head of the commission, Mr Garba Dugum, said this in Uyo while briefing newsmen on the collaboration between the EFCC and the United States of America’s Federal Bureau of Investigation in the fight against cyber crimes.

Dugum, who was represented by the deputy zonal head, Alex Ebbah, said his office upon receiving the directives of the acting Chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Magu, launched an independent raid against the fraudsters, culminating in various strategic raids and onslaught against their hideouts.

Dugum said the commission had gone beyond arrest, investigation and prosecution and conviction of internet fraudsters to the prevention of the act by embarking on sensitisation programmes to educate the youth on the implications and the need to stay away from the crime.

He lauded the collaboration with the FBI and other international law enforcement agencies in the fight against Internet fraudsters, adding that his office had so far received about 20 different cases of Internet fraud reported directly by the FBI through the United States Department of Justice.

Dugum said his office, through such collaborations, had received over 20 different cases of Internet frauds reported directly by the FBI through the US Department of Justice, some of which were under investigation already.

He also mentioned the cases received through the Mutual Legal Assistance by other international law enforcement agencies to include five from the Hong Kong Police, five from the Danish and Norwegian police, and four from the Israeli police.

Others are three from the Austria police, one from the Swedish police, one from the Zambian police and another from the Bulgarian police.

He said the investigation of the cases had resulted in seven arrests involving a huge sum of money in foreign currencies, which the fraudsters had defrauded their victims.

Ariana Grande sues Forever 21 over ads featuring 'look-alike model'

Ariana Grande has a problem with Forever 21. The singer on Monday filed a suit against both the clothing company and spinoff beauty brand Riley Rose, alleging they "stole" the singer's "name, likeness and other intellectual property to promote their brands for free."

In the suit, obtained by CNN, Grande's legal team alleges the clothing company sought out an endorsement deal with Grande in late 2018 and early 2019, but the request was "explicitly declined due to Forever 21's unwillingness to pay the fair market value for a celebrity of Ms. Grande's stature."

The documents allege Forever 21 and Riley Rose published at least 30 unauthorized images and videos "misappropriating Ms. Grande's name, image, likeness and music in order to create the false perception of her endorsement."

The suit includes screenshots from Forever 21's Instagram that show stills from Grande's work being used to promote the Forever 21 brand, as well as advertisements featuring what the suit calls a "look-alike model," who has a hairstyle and clothes similar to those seen in Grande's music video for her song "7 Rings."

Some captions also featured lyrics from Grande's song, the suit says.

The images showcased in the lawsuit no longer appear to be on Forever 21's Instagram, Twitter or Facebook pages.

The suit claims Forever 21 left some of the unauthorized posts up until at least April 17, 2019, despite requests beginning in February that all of them be removed.

Grande is seeking $10 million in damages for copyright infringement, common law trademark infringement and other alleged offenses.
