FG debunks reports of explosion at South African High Commission in Abuja

The Federal Government has debunked the report being circulated on social media of a bomb explosion at the South African High Commission in Abuja on Saturday, calling the report fake news orchestrated by the desperate opposition to cause panic and chaos among the populace.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said the video of the purported bomb explosion, which is being circulated on the social media, is that of the bomb explosion at Emab Plaza, near Banex, in Abuja on June 25, 2014.

The Minister said it is now apparent that the desperate opposition has decided to use fake news and disinformation as handy tools in their avowed determination to make Nigeria ungovernable, having lost woefully at the polls.

Taliban Kidnap Six Afghan Journalists

Taliban kidnapped six Afghan journalists working for private and government media organizations in eastern Paktia province, government officials and Taliban said on Saturday.

The reporters, working for radio and TV news companies that broadcast news in the Pashto and Dari languages, were abducted while traveling together from neighboring Paktika province to Paktia to attend a media workshop on Friday.

"We are trying to negotiate their release with the Taliban," said Abdullah Hasrat, a spokesman for Paktia's governor.

A Taliban spokesman confirmed the abduction of six journalists by their fighters but said they will be released soon.

"Yes, our mujahideens (fighters) have mistakenly kidnapped them," said Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the hardline insurgent group.

"Right now mobile services are not working, but they will be released as soon as we establish contact with the local commander," he said.

Afghanistan was the deadliest country in the world to be a journalist in 2018, with 13 deaths according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

The International Federation of Journalists said 16 journalists were killed last year.

In June, the Taliban issued a threat to Afghan media, saying journalists will be targeted unless news outlets stop broadcasting what they describe as government propaganda against the insurgents.

Media organizations were given one week to stop transmitting "anti-Taliban advertisements" by the group's military commission, a warning that was denounced by the Afghan government and western diplomats.

In 2016, a Taliban suicide bomber rammed his car into a bus carrying employees of Tolo TV, the country’s largest private broadcaster, killing seven journalists.

The Taliban said it killed the employees because Tolo was producing propaganda that supported the occupation of Afghanistan by the United States and its allies in their war against the insurgents.

Makinde and Oyetola fight each other over LAUTECH

Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State has faulted Governor Makinde of Oyo State over the payment of staff at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) warning that Makinde’s statement makes Osun State Government looks irresponsible and it’s just a mere cheap political blackmail which the Govenror must stop.

Makinde during his first 100 days in office celebration on BCOS TV had said, the state was ready to pay salaries of LAUTECH lecturers but Osun State is left to fulfill their part, which Oyo state might have to pay on their behalf so that the students won’t suffer. Makinde also said, at this point, if there’s any need for Osun and Oyo to have the institution divided, Oyo state won’t mind.

“Yesterday, the governing council came to see me and we discussed all these. We’ve signed for worker payments but since it’s owned by both Osun and Oyo states, unfortunately, Osun state has not paid. This can not continue,” Makinde said.

He continued; “A few days ago, I spoke to the Osun governor, Gboyega Oyetola, the plan to split was signed between Akala and Oyinlola but we don’t know why it wasn’t implemented. Oyo State will have to pay the salary of LAUTECH (Osun’s share) because I don’t want the students to suffer.

“If we have to split up, then so be it, I won’t shy away from this divorce. LAUTECH is very important to Ogbomoso.”

In its reaction, the Osun state government released a statement saying;

The attention of the State Government of Osun has been drawn to a statement credited to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state on his official twitter handle where he frivolously accused the state government of not paying the salary of workers of the Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso.

We will like to state that for 29 years of existence, Osun Government has been living up to its expectations and performing his responsibility as an equal partner in the LAUTECH ownership, notwithstanding the obvious cheating from the Oyo government.

Governor Seyi Makinde needs proper briefing and extensive readings on LAUTECH before he could
make factual and objective remarks. Presently, he obviously does not have sufficient facts or may be playing greed man script. And as a matter of fact, we are aware that the governor had during his campaign promised to acquire LAUTECH and makes it the property of Oyo government alone. We are not surprised that he started on a wrong note of blackmail on the university matter.

However, Governor Seyi Makinde needs to be properly informed that Osun government does not owe LAUTECH workers’ salary since it took over the payment in July this year. What is outstanding is the August subvention which is being arranged alongside other statutory expenses of Osun government. It is unpleasant that Governor Makinde took to his twitter handle in an attempt to make a cheap political point on Osun. That is unbecoming of a governor.

May we remind the governor that in 2017, the Osun government committed a sum of N1, 250, 000, 000, and in 2018, Osun government paid N500, 000, 000. Between July 2010 and July 2016, Osun paid a total sum of N8, 692, 488, 234.04. Osun has offset the LAUTECH workers July salary with N300, 000, 000 in this year. We challenged Governor Seyi Makinde to tell the public what Oyo has contributed to LAUTECH between 2010 and 2019. The governor should be mindful of what he will say on LAUTECH.

When owner states were asked to pay N500m each for take-off after the visitation panel, Osun duly paid its own, but we are yet to have evidence of payment by our boasting counterpart.

Governor Seyi Makinde should be worried on why LAUTECH has not been self-sufficient in terms of funding and academic advancement since its creation, while Osun State University which was created a few years ago is making ways financially and academically.

We expect Governor Makinde to rise above the petty game of blackmail and attempt to incite the LAUTECH Workers and the Oyo people at large against the government of Osun and the administration of Governor Gboyega Oyetola who is very responsive and committed to workers plight.

It is a known fact that Oyo had always wanted to own LAUTECH alone but it is our common patrimony and nobody can appropriate it through blackmail or whatever. Osun is not in any way forcing itself on the joint ownership of LAUTECH. The supposed ‘plan to split’ signed by former governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola and former governor Alao Akala was a ruse. There is a legal and sincere process to be followed if Oyo state is indeed interested in taking over LAUTECH. Osun government will be happy if Governor Makinde initiates that process.

Osun has always been cheated on LAUTECH: only one (1) out of the eight (8) academic faculties is in Osun, while Oyo has about twice of the staff strength of the University. Osun single-handedly funded the infrastructure development in the LAUTECH campus in Osun; also 85 per cent of the total institution’s infrastructure is in Oyo, whereas funding is equally carried out. Despite this, we are fully committed to joint ownership of our joint heritage.

Governor Oyetola who is passionate about functional education, a team player and a goal-getter will not cease in funding LAUTECH.

The amiable Governor Seyi Makinde is urged to take a deeper and more rational outlook at the matters of existence and operation of LAUTECH, otherwise, he will get lost in the shenanigans of LAUTECH OWNERSHIP AND CONTROL. Oyo has been a great cheat on Osun in this matter and only a dispassionate and discerning mind can deductively make good sense out of the situation. GSM is thus advised to take rational path before making statements on LAUTECH matter.

Man charged £55,000 for just one beer at a Manchester hotel

One man has been charged £55,000 for a single ale there, which he thinks could be ‘the most expensive beer in history’.

Peter Lalor, a cricket writer from Australia, still hasn’t had a refund for the bottle of Deuchars IPA which should have been £5.50. He was staying at a branch of Malmaison in Manchester ahead of the fourth Ashes Test match when he stopped for a drink at the hotel bar.

When he came to pay, it became apparent that something was not quite right.

Writing on Twitter, Mr Lalor said: ‘I didn’t have my reading glasses when she presented me with a bill for the beer and when she had some problems with the machine I didn’t think much of it, but it was eventually resolved, I said I didn’t want a receipt and she went to leave.

‘Something, however, made me ask: ‘How much did I just pay for that beer?’ She checked, covered her mouth, started to giggle and refused to tell me, saying only there had been a mistake and she would fix it.

‘She kept giggling, I told her it needed to be fixed and fixed right now. She ran to get her manager who took the situation far more seriously and went about attempting to arrange a refund.

She told me somebody would be in contact.’

But Mr Lalor said nobody got in touch with him and he was unaware exactly how much had been taken from the account until he received a call from home. ‘The sum of 99,983.64 (£55,300) had been removed from our account,’ he said.

‘And, there’d been a transaction fee of 2,499.59 (£1,380) to add to the pain. The fee has been refunded but not the larger amount.’

Mr Lalor said it was ‘baffling’ that the transaction had been gone through ‘unquestioned’, and while he had been promised a refund in nine working days ‘in the meantime there’s a massive hole in my finances’. Around an hour and a half after tweeting about the incident, Mr Lalor said the hotel had been in touch and were ‘being very helpful now’.

Identical triplets jailed for a combined 46 years for conspiring to supply man with submachine gun

Three brothers have been jailed for a combined 46 years for conspiring to supply a rapper with an ‘extraordinarily serious’ Uzi submachine gun and a loaded pistol.

Reiss, Ralston and Ricky Gabriel tried to evade detection by relying on their shared DNA and appearance but were tracked down with mobile phone and surveillance evidence.

The 28 year olds from Edmonton, north London, were found guilty of conspiracy to possess firearms and ammunition with intent to endanger life in July.

The guns were intended for a convicted criminal who had been out on licence, having been released from an 11 year prison sentence for indiscriminately shooting into a crowded street near Wood Green tube station in 2010.

An innocent passer-by was hit in the leg when Aron Thomas, 32, a rapper who performed under the name Vipex, let off eight shots with a 9mm handgun.

Ricky and Ralston, both semi-professional footballers, were each jailed for 14 years at Blackfriars Crown Court on Friday, September 6.

Reiss, also pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life after he was caught with a handgun on July 26 last year, and two counts of possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply. He was jailed for a total of 18 years.

DNA found on the handgun was linked to all three but it was impossible for police to prove which brother it belonged to.

Scotland Yard’s investigation was able to determine each had been involved in handling the weapons, the court heard.

The triplets, each wearing grey Nike tracksuits, smirked during sentencing and grinned to friends and family in the public gallery as they were led to the cells.

A$AP Rocky's Swedish lawyer shot multiple times

A$AP Rocky's former lawyer has been shot in Sweden.

Henrik Olssen Lilja, the attorney who initially represented the rapper after his July arrest in Sweden, was reportedly shot in the head and chest as he was leaving his apartment in Stockholm on Friday morning, TMZ reports. Lilja was later replaced by Slobodan Jovicic to represent Rocky.

According to the report, the shooter allegedly walked up to Lilja and shot him. A spokeswoman for the Swedish Bar Association further confirmed Lilja was the victim of the shooting. His condition is currently unknown.

Last month, Rocky was found guilty of assault by a Swedish court, but was given a conditional sentence after judges found the assault was not "of such a serious nature that a prison stance must be chosen."
