The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) has started the “secret” investigation of bank accounts of the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan; his deputy, Ovie Omo-Agege; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; his deputy, Idris Wase, as well as the principal officers and members of the National Assembly.

Former Attorney General and minister of justice, Mohammed Adoke claims Osinbajo might be after him

The former attorney general and minister of justice, Mohammed Adoke (SAN), has accused Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo of being behind his travails.

Adoke says this in his book, ‘Burden of Service: Reminiscences of Nigeria’s former Attorney-General’.

The former minister says although Osinbajo’s “bizarre role” in what he calls his persecution remains incomprehensible, he gives three possible reasons.

“First, it was possible some persons who were fighting me gained his confidence and persuaded him that, indeed, I was floating on a sea of stolen loot that needed to be recovered.

“It could, as a matter of fact, be a well-meaning and altruistic fight against corruption based on the purest of intentions on the VP’s part,” he says.

The second reason, according to him, is that he has been told that Osinbajo, in an effort to impress President Muhammadu Buhari, has informed him that the signature bonus paid on OPL 245 is too meager.

Adoke claims that it is the Vice-President’s opinion that if the transaction is to be reviewed, he can get the beneficiaries of the block, Shell and Eni, to pay up to $500m as signature bonus.

“To achieve this objective, all efforts were made to malign the Settlement Agreement of 2011 with allegations of corruption,” he added.

Adoke, in the book, gives the third possible reason as an interview he granted a national newspaper in 2016.

He says he made reference to Halliburton case in which the government retained the services of Nigerian lawyers to prosecute foreign companies that allegedly bribed Nigerian officials in respect of the NLNG project.

“In that interview, I mentioned the names of the lawyers who got paid by Pfizer to include Chief J.B. Daudu, Prof. Osinbajo, and a host of other Nigerian lawyers, including Mrs Mariam Uwais, now a special assistant to the President on Social Investment Programme in the Office of the Vice-President.

“Their fees, I had pointed out, were paid to them by Pfizer through Mr Tunde Irukera, an associate of Osinbajo. Irukera is now the Director-General of the Consumer Protection Council.
'
“I was told that Osinbajo was very bitter that I mentioned his name. He didn’t fancy being portrayed as having benefited from certain transactions as he sought to maintain a clean public image. It appeared I had inadvertently blown open that holy lid. That could possibly account for his hate and contempt for me,” he writes.

He adds, “This consideration, however, remains speculative. I have not been able to confirm it. If that be the true position, then the VP was possibly trying to get his pound of flesh by supporting those aggrieved by the Malabu transactions to come after me, using the EFCC over which he has enormous control.”

Major fire at world's largest oil refinery

Drones attacked the world’s largest oil processing facility in Saudi Arabia and a major oilfield operated by Saudi Aramco early on Saturday, the kingdom’s interior ministry said, sparking a huge fire at a processor vital to global energy supplies.

A military spokesman for Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for the strikes.

Yahia Sarie made the announcement on Saturday in a televised address carried by the Houthi movement’s al-Masirah satellite news channel.

He said the rebels had sent 10 drones to attack the Abqaiq oil processing facility and the Khurais oil field. He said attacks against the kingdom would get worse if the war in Yemen continued.

“The only option for the Saudi government is to stop attacking us,” he said. A Saudi-led coalition has been at war with the rebels since March 2015.

It was unclear whether there were any injuries in the attacks.

Missing Dutch billionaire, Tob Cohen’s body found in a septic tank

The body of missing Dutch tycoon Tob Cohen has been found, His body was found on Friday afternoon in a septic tank at his home in Kitisuru, Spring Valley, Nairobi.

His wife Sara Wairimu who was arrested days after his disappearance is still in police custody.

Cohen, a former CEO of Philips Electronics East Africa, was reported missing from their Lower Kabete home in Nairobi between July 19 and July 20, 2019.

Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti was quoted as saying the body was discovered inside a septic tank in his compound at Kitisuru, Spring Valley Road in Nairobi.

“It is a gruesome murder, they took their time to kill innocent Cohen,” said Kinoti.

“He was bound (on) legs, hands, and neck before he was murdered and then they hid him in an underground water tank. They took their time,” he added.

Kinoti said that the body was wrapped in layers of clothing indicating the gruesome torture he underwent before his death.

On August 28, 2019, Wairimu was picked and interrogated by police for the third time over the disappearance of Mr Cohen from their Lower Kabete home, Nairobi.

The last time Mr Cohen was seen in public he had allegedly been dropped off at a club in Westlands after he left his house on the day he is believed to have disappeared.

The Dutch embassy in Nairobi reported Cohen missing after his family approached Dutch police, saying they could not reach him on his mobile phone and it was unusual for him to be out of touch for long.

Investigators say he met at least two women over lunch at the club on July 20 from around 2pm to 4pm. The two women told police during questioning that the 71-year-old golf lover left the club and they did not know his whereabouts.

Preliminary findings show his mobile phone was switched off at the same place.

Police questioned several people, including his wife and workers.

A day before his body was found, a charge sheet produced in court indicating that Sarah Wairimu would be charged with the murder of Tob Chichou Cohen on the night of July 19 or July 20, 2019 at dawn.

Wairimu, however, was not required to plead before Milimani High Court Judge Charles Kariuki.
Instead Justice Kariuki directed the prosecution to conduct a mental health assessment on Wairimu before charging her with murder.

Actress jailed for paying $15,000 to have her daughter's SAT result upgraded

Actress Felicity Huffman, the first parent sentenced in a wide-ranging United States college admissions cheating scandal, was given a 14-day prison term and apologised for her actions on Friday after pleading guilty to paying to rig her daughter's entrance exam.

US District Judge Indira Talwani sentenced Huffman, the 56-year-old former star of the popular television series "Desperate Housewives" and one-time Academy Award nominee, in federal court in Boston. The judge also ordered Huffman to pay a $30,000 fine and complete 250 hours of community service.

"My first apology is to you," Huffman told the judge immediately before the sentence was issued.

"I realise now, as a mother, that love and truth must go hand in hand, and love at the expense of truth is not real love," the actress said. "I will deserve whatever punishment you give me," she added.

Huffman was released from court after the judge ordered her to report to prison on October 25.

Prosecutors had recommended a sentence of one month behind bars after Huffman tearfully entered a guilty plea in May to conspiracy related to her payment of $15,000 to have someone secretly correct her daughter's answers on the SAT standardised test used for college admissions.

Huffman's attorneys, calling the actress "remorseful" and "deeply ashamed", had urged the judge to allow her to remain free on one year's probation, complete 250 hours of community service and pay a $20,000 fine.

Huffman and her husband, actor William H Macy, looked sombre when they arrived at the federal court, holding hands, before the sentencing.

Huffman is among 51 people charged in a vast scheme in which wealthy parents were accused of conspiring to use bribery and other forms of fraud to secure for their children admission to prominent US universities. These schools included Yale, Stanford, Georgetown, the University of Southern California, the University of Texas and Wake Forest.

What are we turning politics into in this country? You want to kill someone over Buhari and Atiku tribunal matter? This is animalistic!

“You break a bottle and stab a fellow countryman almost to the point of death over APC and PDP matters? So, someone doesn’t have right to personal opinion again in Nigeria?

India busts Nigerian-Afghan heroin cartel, as two Nigerians are arrested

India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has seized Afghan Heroin worth more than Rs 30 crore (about $4.2million) and arrested six persons, including two Nigerians who were part of an international drug smuggling syndicate, Asian News International(ANI) reports.

They were arrested after an Afghan who was expecting heroin cargo in Delhi was arrested. He sang and led the NCB to the Nigerians.

The first Nigerian arrested was arrested in Vasant Kunj area and a search of his house led to the recovery of 6.02 kilograms of heroin.

The second Nigerian was arrested with 488 grams of heroin in the Uttam Nagar area.

“The street value in the International drug market of the total seized contraband is more than Rs 30 crores,” the release read.

“Sustained operation by Narcotics Control Bureau against drug menace with special emphasis on international drug syndicates has further achieved breakthrough resulting in busting an Afghan-Nigerian Heroin cartel which was being operated in New Delhi area,” the release read.

The NCB acted on a tip-off from a reliable source, that one Afghan national was coming to New Delhi from Kandahar, following which security was beefed up at the international airport.

“The alert NCB team also marked two more Afghan nationals whose movements were found suspicious. Though a search of their belongings yielded no contraband, but when they were subjected to medical examination, presence of foreign substance was revealed in their stomach. The three suspects were admitted to hospital and under medical supervision, a total of 253 pellets containing Afghan Heroin were recovered. The total weight of Heroin was found to be 1.8 kgs,” according to the release.

“This successful operation is a result of increased focus of NCB on international drug networks, especially Afghan heroin supply network, who are working in collaboration with Nigerian drug traffickers,” the release added.

The release added that India is a “transit country” for passing the drugs to other countries apart from being a market and therefore the syndicates are ceaselessly trying to smuggle heroin to India.

“Further investigation in coordination with foreign authorities is being conducted to identify other persons involved in the illicit drug syndicate,” the release added.

-Buhari will take 100m Nigerians out of poverty'

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said the Buhari administration will take 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in the next 10 years.

Osinbajo’ spokesman, Laolu Akande, in a statement in Abuja, said the vice president made the pledge on Thursday during a visit to Alhaji Muhammadu Bashar, the Emir of Gwandu in Kebbi State.

The vice president, who thanked the traditional ruler for hosting him, said he was in the state to “do a lot of things” one of which was to inaugurate the Micro Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSMEs).

He said he would also take a look at the new markets that had been rebuilt after the fire, and also ensure that some of the schemes being implemented to boost living standards were truly in place.

“ One of the very important schemes is what is called the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme, which has the TraderMoni and MarketMoni.

“ TraderMoni is the scheme where we give petty traders N10,000, and when they pay back, N15,000, then N20,000 and it goes on and on to N100,000.

“The president’s desire for this programme is that every hard-working citizens of this country should be able to have some support from government, no matter how little their inventory.

“Today, at the market, I passed a woman who was selling vegetables and I asked her how much her whole inventory was, the whole thing was N500; it is for such people, such petty traders, that the TraderMoni N10,000 is meant, so that they can buy more.

“The President has promised that by the grace of God, we are going to take 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in the next 10 years.

“I believe very strongly that we are going to achieve that, but we can only achieve it with the able support of the state governments,’’ the statement quoted Osinbajo as saying.

Meghan Markle continues Princess Diana's tradition of hugging people breaking royal rules

The Duchess of Sussex, 38, returned to work yesterday for her first official public engagement since the birth of her son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor in May.

Arriving in London to launch a high street clothing range in aid of charity Smart Works, the former actress bestowed plenty of warm hugs to those she met, despite it contradicting royal protocol.

And experts have suggested that the duchess could be continuing Princess Diana's legacy of comforting those she met, while also showing she is a 'modern, successful woman' in her own right.

Former butler to Prince Charles, Grant Harrold, suggested Meghan is 'showing that the British royal family is a modern 21st-century family' and that she is 'carrying on Diana's tradition' by hugging children and adults.

Meanwhile, the Duchess of Cambridge, 37, follows 'royal etiquette to the letter', offering only handshakes unless the other person - such as young children - goes in for a hug.

'As a future Queen Kate has always followed royal etiquette to the letter and this would include using the handshake as the norm,' says body language expert Judi James.

'Being a royal wife has been pretty much Kate's only "career" so she went into the "business" before she learned any other body language traits or rituals.

'Meghan came into royal life as a woman who was successful and famous in her own right and so brought her way of doing things with her into that new life.'

Instagram censors celebrity fishmonger's photos and calls them 'offensive'

A celebrity fishmonger who shared pictures of his fresh catches on social media was stunned to find his images censored as 'disturbing'.

Rex Goldsmith, who owns The Chelsea Fishmonger in London, had hoped social media would be a good way to entice new customers to his already popular shop, which is frequented by Nigella Lawson and Henry Blofeld.

He was confused when those who visited his Instagram page saw a message that said: 'This video contains sensitive content that many may find offensive or disturbing.'

The images of his fish were blurred out and customers had to click on them to see them.

Mr Goldsmith told the Daily Telegraph: 'I think it's a bit ridiculous really.

'I don't know whether the post has been reported by vegans or whether Instagram censored it as they thought it would be offensive to vegans.

'I have no idea why a vegan would follow a fishmonger on social media in the first place.

'If they're going to pick on me, why don't they pick on one of the big companies who use the methods of farming that are bad for the environment and fish welfare.'

He suggested that should the censorship continue, the food community could band together and stop using the platform.

The Chelsea Fishmonger is not the only victim of Instagram's censorship function.

George Michael's former lover Fadi Fawaz is homeless

George Michael's former lover Fadi Fawaz is reportedly homeless after moving out of the £49-a-night budget hotel he lived in after being chucked out of the late singer's £5million house.

Unemployed Fadi checked out of the central London Travelodge on Monday and is now thought to be sleeping rough in Covent Garden.

The 46-year-old former celebrity hairdresser had checked into the hotel in Covent Garden after he allegedly 'went beserk' and smashed in the windows of his ex's exclusive Regent's Park property last month.

In a Facebook post he told friends he had become homeless, as reported by The Sun.

He said:  'George Michael the ikon (sic) 3 years later and his lawyers still not done anything to sort me out so in last few days I have been sleeping in the street in Covent Garden instead of being in my home.

'They took the key by a trick the (sic) came out with it and now 2 months later still not heard anything I was staying in hotel and 2 days a go (sic) was stopped. What a cheap ikon this George f*****g Michael is.'
