Xenophobia: South Africa sends special delegation to Nigeria, seven other countries

President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa has sent out special envoys to deliver messages of solidarity to several Heads of State and Governments across Africa.

The team, comprising former minister in the presidency, Mr Jeff Radebe, Ambassador Kingsley Mmabolo and Dr. Khulu Mbatha, will visit Nigeria, Niger, Ghana, Senegal, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.

The Special Envoys will deliver a message from President Ramaphosa regarding the incidents of violence that recently erupted in some parts of South Africa, which resulted in attacks on foreign nationals and destruction of property.

They are also expected to reassure fellow African countries that South Africa is committed to the ideals of pan-African unity and to the rule of law.

Beyond that, they will also brief governments in the identified countries about the steps that the South African government is taking to bring a stop to the attacks and to hold the perpetrators to account.

This comes days after 188 Nigerians where successfully evacuated from South Africa via an Air Peace Airline, following an order by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Lagos State Taskforce explains why people were picked up at African Shrine

Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) at the weekend raided all streets within Central Business District, including surroundings of the ‘African Shrine’, Alausa, Ikeja and arrested 28 miscreants and 15 illegal street traders.

The Chairman of the Agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi said the enforcement operations became imperative following complaints from members of the public about the criminal activities of miscreants and environmental nuisance of illegal street traders around the Shrine.

Egbeyemi disclosed that 28 miscreants and 15 illegal street traders were arrested at various locations around Alausa, hinting that the raid was also initiated due to the nefarious acts within the vicinity of the African Shrine which presented a negative image to tourists and Lagosians as a whole.

According to the Chairman, “The night enforcement operation was carried out on all roads around African Shrine where sales of hard drugs like Tramadol, Codeine, Skunk, Weed, Illegal Mixed Liquor, Assorted Food and all sorts of consumable and non-consumable items are freely sold on the streets in defiance of security agencies and government authority”.

Egbeyemi maintained that the enforcement operations would be a continuous exercise in line with the vision of the present administration to rid the entire State of street urchins and criminals.

Two Nigerians carrying drugs die on flight from Brazil to Ethiopia (photos)

Two Nigerian men who allegedly swallowed drugs have died during a flight from Brazil to Ethiopia.
The drugs they swallowed unfortunately got burst during while still on air.

The deceased have been identified as Chigozie Pascal Aniagbado and Chijioke Chidioka Ogbuefi.

Narrating how it happened, an eyewitness who was on the same flight with them said: “I was in an Ethiopian Airline from Brazil to Ethiopia. My seat number falls at the middle of two men.

The flight was 12hrs. The young man at my right asked me to check the flight map to know how far we had gone which I did. We were already half the journey.

Then he said to me “do you speak Igbo,” I said “yes.” He said he doesn’t know if he would make this journey that it seems the drugs he swallowed must have exceeded its stay in his system.

Then my mind sank. I began to shiver. He said ‘don’t be scared, it’s not in the bag, it is inside my body.’ He said I should stand and get him water, but I refused because I was scared he might insert something in my bag.

I had to wave for the air hostess to come. She came and served him water. He demanded for food, he was given. He became calm. Few minutes later, he brought an olive oil from his bag and drank.

Then he started shivering and fell down. That was when all the doctors in the plane assembled, questioning, asking his country and tribe.

He was able to open up that he swallowed drugs. The doctors had to put him on oxygen, then the other also started shivering.

Because of them, we were to have an emergency landing. The pilots said no matter their crime, it’s their priority to keep them alive. However, eventually lost the battle.”

Spain beat Argentina 95-75 to win the Basketball World Cup for the first time since 2006.

Earlier in the day, France took the bronze for the second consecutive year after a 67-57 win over Australia.

The United States won the last two tournaments but were knocked out by France in the quarter-final round earlier in the week. Argentina then beat France in the semi-final.

In the final game, the Spaniards scored first and never relinquished the lead.

They relied on superior defence and rebounding to snuff out the offensive threat of 2004 Olympic champions Argentina.

Point guard Ricky Rubio racked up 20 points and three assists.

Marc Gasol and Willy Hernangomez swatted three shots each as Spain pulled down 47 rebounds, 20 more than Argentina, en route to a comprehensive victory.

Court restrains Imo former Governor, Okorocha from selling EFCC-flagged properties

Justice J.K Omotosho of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has lifted the interim forfeiture order on some the properties of Rochas Okorocha, former governor of Imo state, now under EFCC investigation.

But the reprieve came with some condition: Okorocha and his family must not sell or alienate any of the properties, pending the conclusion of investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The Court directed the Applicants to, on or before Tuesday, September 17, 2019 depose to an affidavit of undertaking and adjourned till September 27 for report.

The judge gave the consequential Order while vacating the July 25, 2019 Interim Order, forfeiting five properties owned by Okorocha and his family to the Federal Government.

The properties are: Rochas Foundation College, Owerri, All in 1 Shopping Mall, East High Academy, East High College and Royal Spring Palm Hotel & Apartments.

The Registered Trustees of Rochas Foundation College, All-in Limited, Royal Spring Palm Apartments Limited, Registered Trustees of Women of Divine Destiny Initiative and Uluoma Okorocha Nwosu challenged the order on August 8, through five separate motions on notice, praying the court to vacate the interim forfeiture order.

The Commission in response filed counter affidavits to the motions of the applicants on 19 August, 2019.

On 21 August, 2019 when the case came up for hearing, the applicants’ informed the court that they were served with the Commission’s Counter Affidavits and asked for an adjournment which was granted by court.

When the case came up on September 9, 2019 for hearing of the motions, the applicants filed Further Affidavits and in reply to these further affidavits, the Commission filed counter affidavits to the applicants’ further affidavit and served them same day.

However, applicants’ Counsel Okey Amechi, SAN informed Justice Omotosho that they were just served and the court adjourned the case till Wednesday, September 11, 2019 for hearing.

After the Court sitting, the applicants’ served the Commission with 2nd further affidavit at precisely 11:21 am.

On Thursday, September12, 2019, counsel to the commission informed the Court that the Applicants had served him with their 2nd further affidavits and that he would need time to respond.

The Court gave the Commission till Friday, September,13, 2019 to file its counter affidavits, failing which it will make a consequential order.

This was after counsel to the applicants had drawn the attention of the court to the nature of the properties, one of which is a school which was scheduled to resume in September.

On Friday, September 13 when the matter came up, Counsel to the Commission informed the Court that he is yet to file its counter affidavits and the court issued the consequential order vis-à-vis the nature of the properties involved.

The Commission is studying the consequential order of court.
