The police have arrested three self-acclaimed Islamic clerics for allegedly swindling unsuspecting members of the public and raping their female victims in Ogun State.

Police spokesperson in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, on Tuesday said Aliu Abdulfatai (50), Sule Adebayo (36) and Lekan Olokodana (31) were arrested following a report by a woman (name withheld).

Mr Oyeyemi said the woman reported at Adigbe police station that she was duped of N70,000 by the suspects, while one of them also raped her.

He said the complainant, who is a marketer with a popular property/real estate company, was on an assignment when she met the suspects who claimed to be Islamic clerics and indicated interest in purchasing a large expanse of land.


The suspects allegedly claimed they wanted to build a mosque on the land but immediately persuaded the woman to have a special prayer after which they told her she was under a spell which needed a special deliverance prayer to cast out.

“As a result of this, they succeeded in fraudulently obtaining the sum of N70, 000 from her after they lured her into their house where one of them raped her,” the police spokesperson said.

“On the strength of her complaint, the DPO Adigbe division, CSP Augustine Opadile, detailed his detectives to go after these hoodlums and bring them to justice. Their efforts paid off when three amongst them were apprehended while waiting for the victim to bring the money they demanded, and one of them escaped.”

Mr Oyeyemi said, on interrogation, the suspects confessed to being fraudsters. He said the investigations further revealed that one of the suspects had used the proceeds of their fraudulent acts to build a private school in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Housewife pours hot water on 10-month-old baby in Kaduna

A Chief Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Zaria, Kaduna State, has remanded a housewife, Mrs Nnennaya Edmond in prison for allegedly pouring hot water on a nursing mother and her 10-month-old baby.

The woman is standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal offence and causing of grievous injuries on one Gloria Cyril and her 10-month-old baby, Bright Cyril.

Both the accused and the complainant are living in the same house at ECWA Church area of Wusasa, Zaria, Kaduna State.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abubakar Aliyu-Lamido, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case to Oct. 15, for the complainant to present witnesses.


Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Mannir Nasir, had told the court that on Sep. 10, at about 1:00am, one Mary Ijeoma, reported the case to Danmaaji Police Division.

He said that Ijeoma had the accused the defendant of pouring hot water on her daughter, Gloria and her 10-month-old grandson, Bright.
The Prosecutor added that the complainant had narrated that the action caused grievous injuries on the nursing mother and baby who were rushed to St Luke’s Hospital, Wusasa for treatment.

He said that the offence was contrary to sections 223 and 216 of the Penal Code Law 2017.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor then asked the court for a short adjournment to enable him present witnesses.

EFCC arrests gang for impersonation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Uyo Zonal Office, has arrested three men in Uyo for impersonating the staff of the Commission.

EFCC spokesman, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, in a statement on Tuesday, said the men also impersonated officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

According to him, the suspects are Norbert Rampa, 51, Patrick Essien, 50 and Gabriel Daniel 32.

He said that the trio along with other members of their team had last year September paid a courtesy visit to the Commission’s Uyo office, under the auspices of Grassroots Development Advocacy Initiative (GDAI).


“They claimed that the initiative was a registered organisation with the National Anti-Corruption Coalition (NACC).

“During the visit, its national director, Essien spoke extensively on the several training that the members had gone through to ensure grassroots engagements in budget processes, aimed at sustaining the fight against corruption.

“They, however, requested that they be granted operational powers, to which the Zonal Head, Mr Garba Dugum refused and advised them to rather report all perceived corrupt practices to the commission.”

Uwujaren further said that forged documents recovered from their apartments included Fake EFCC letterhead papers, ICPC operational jackets, forged identity cards of NACC of ICPC/EFCC Partnership.

Africa-focused tech firm, Andela, sacks 400 employees

Andela, an Africa-focused company that builds talented software engineers, has announced the disengagement of about 400 junior engineers and workers in Nigeria, Uganda and Kenya.

The company, in a statement on Tuesday, said the move aligned with the plan to restructure its talent pool in line with global market demand.

Specifically, Andela said those affected by the restructuring are about “250 junior engineers and staff from its Nigeria and Uganda hubs, with another 170 potentially impacted in Kenya.”

The technology company said it had provided a holistic professional and financial support package for the affected employees.

Accountant electrocuted after phone she was charging fell into the bath

An accountant was electrocuted after the mobile phone she was charging "slipped" into the bath.

Evgenia Shulyatyeva, 26, died within minutes after the device fell into the water she was in. Her heartbroken mum Vera found her dead at her home in Kirovo-Chepetsk, west Russia.

Now the Russian Investigative Committee is investigating the death, the latest in a string of similar tragedies in the nation.

The alarming number of these cases includes the death of a 10-year-old girl who dropped her phone in the bath in August. It was also plugged into the mains.

And a poker star suffered a fatal electric shock in her bathroom in Russia back in June.

Evgenia's funeral will happen tomorrow in her remote hometown, 620 miles northeast of Moscow.

Devastated friends have paid emotional tributes to Evgenia, who is believed to have been single.

"Sister ... rest in peace .... sleep well .... you are forever in our hearts …" one pal wrote online.

Land grabbers invade communities, kill 3 in Ogun

Land grabbers have invaded four communities in Odogbolu Local Government in Ogun State and killed three persons, while one other sustained serious machete wound.

The hoodlums, numbering about 30 were alleged to be working for a notorious land grabber, Kamorudeen Lamina, also known as ”Sir K. Oluwo.”

They swooped on residents of Mooro Otefisan, Odoonosa, Gbodomo and Amitekun all in the Ijebu axis of Odoogbolu Local Government area in the early hours of Saturday where they inflicted injuries on the people.


The hoodlums were said to have infiltrated the four communities in retaliation for the detention of their principal, Sir K Oluwo, at the Sagamu prison over death of three persons on a disputed land in the area.

Victims of the last weekend’s gun attack included: Ojujebe Oluwatobi while Razaq Omotoye was macheted and were all currently recuperating at an undisclosed hospital in the area.

Broadcast journalism legend, Cokie Robert dies at 75

Veteran journalist Cokie Roberts, winner of three Emmys and a legend and trailblazer in broadcasting, has died at the age of 75, ABC News announced.

Roberts worked in television, public radio and publishing for over 40 years. She began her tenure at ABC as a contributor for "This Week with David Brinkley" and later became ABC's chief congressional analyst.

Roberts is survived by her husband Steve V. Roberts and her children Lee Roberts and Rebecca Roberts, her grandchildren Regan, Hale and Cecilia Roberts and Claiborne, Jack and Roland Hartman, along with nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Police in Niger have arrested a 22-year-old housewife, Harela Uba, of Shakodna village, Shiroro Local Government Area of the State for allegedly killing a three-day-old baby boy in the area.
The Commissioner of Police in the State, Alhaji Adamu Usman, disclosed this in Minna on Tuesday.

Usman said that one Uba Saidu of Shakodna village in Shiroro Local Government Area reported the matter at Shiroro Police Division that his second wife, Fa’iza Uba, of the same address, went into the bathroom and left her three-day-old baby boy in her room.

“When she returned, she discovered white foam coming out from the mouth of the baby and he was immediately rushed to General Hospital, Kuta, where he was confirmed dead by a physician,” he said.


“The Police on reasonable suspicion invited his first wife, one Harela Uba, of the same address who is eight-month pregnant for questioning, being the one at home when the incident happened,” he said.

The Commissioner said that upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to giving her seven-year-old daughter, Khadija Uba, a liquid substance suspected to be insecticide also known as ‘Ota Pia-Pia’, to administer on the child, which she did.

He said that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.

EFCC catches 2 new Yahoo-Yahoo boys

Officers of the Cyber Crime Section at the Abuja Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC have raided the den of suspected yahoo-yahoo fraudsters at House 16, Yashin Dogara News Engineering, Dawaki, Abuja.

In the same vein, arrests were carried out on September 13, at Nepa Road, Phase 4 Kubwa and at 18, Samuel Crescent, Dantata Estate Kubwa, Abuja.

The operations followed covert intelligence gathering and leads from already arrested suspects.


The suspects arrested are Iloh Joseph and Emeka Jonathan. In the course of the operation, mobile phones, laptop computers, and a Toyota Corolla car were recovered.

The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed, said Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC spokesman.

26-year-old Youth Corps member appointed commissioner in Kwara

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has appointed a serving 26-year-old female Youth Corps member, Miss Joana Nnazua Kolo as a commissioner.

She was among the four female commissioner-nominees whose names were forwarded to the Kwara State House of Assembly on Tuesday.

Kolo, the youngest commissioner-nominee in the state’s history, is a 2018 graduate of Library Science from the Kwara State University (KWASU). A grassroots mobiliser, Kolo is an ardent advocate of community development.

If confirmed, she would be Nigeria’s youngest commissioner, taking the trophy from Oyo State’s 27-year-old Oluwaseun Fakorede.

Four persons have been reportedly arrested over the murder of a woman, her daughter and her grandson.

The victims were identified as Mrs. Alice Omorogbe aged 52, Mrs. Blessing Efe, 25, and her six-month-old baby boy.

They were killed last week Thursday at their residence at Iguadolor community in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

A two-year-old daughter of the late Blessing identified as Gift Efe was spared as he was seen in the apartment where the three mutilated bodies of the victims were discovered.


Among those arrested is Pa Iguma Amasowomwan, the Deputy Odionwere Assistant village head of the community.

Sources in the community said Pa Iguma was picked up by operatives of Ogida Divisional Headquarters following allegations of complicity leveled against him by the deceased’s family.

He was interrogated at the anti-cult unit of police headquarters in Benin City, the state capital.

Eldest son of Odionwere of Iguadolor Community, Mr Enaruna Omorogbe said the victims were the wife and children of his late brother.

He said the Okaighele (youth leader) of Iguadolor Community, one Perrick Egbon, recently threatened to eliminate his late brother’s wife for having the guts to report him to some elders in the community for demolishing her uncompleted building with a bulldozer.

Egbon who denied the allegations appealed to the police and relevant authorities to unravel the killers and prosecute them.

He said he travelled out of town and did not even know the victims.

“All they are saying are allegations. It is not true that I killed those people.

“The world will soon know the truth about the incident and I call on the police to investigate the matter.”

Man who laughed as he dragged shark to death behind speedboat jailed

A man who laughed and smiled as he dragged a shark to its death behind a speedboat has been sentenced to 10 days in jail.

Robert Lee Benac, now 30, was one of three men involved in a viral video that saw them ruthlessly dragging the predator in Florida, US.

The horrific footage shows the shark visibly struggling as it bashes off the water at speed.

One of the men was seen gloating on camera: "Look, it's already almost dead," as the poor animal struggled to break free from the line.


Florida Wildlife Investigators believe the shark had already been shot before being dragged.

The sentence will see Benac serve a total of three weekends in prison, as well as 11 months of probation and a $2,500 fine, US broadcaster CNN reports.

His fishing license was also revoked for three years, his attorney  Justin Brent Petredis reportedly said.

The video came to light after Miami fisherman Mark Quartiano, who goes by "Mark the Shark," was sent the footage by two Instagram users.

He said at the time he was "horrified" by the video and decided to post it in the hope those responsible would be held to account.

Benac had originally been charged with two felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty before he agreed to a plea deal, meaning one charged was dropped and the other reduced to misdemeanor.
