#FreeBritney! Dozens protest in court as they tell judge they want Britney Spears to have her life back

Dozens of Britney Spears fans and followers of the #FreeBritney movement gathered outside a court in downtown Los Angeles Wednesday while inside a hearing was held over the troubled pop star’s controversial conservatorship.

‘Britney should be allowed to have control of her own life, her money, her career, her travel, everything,’ longtime Spears fan Christina Taft, 25, told DailyMail.com as she stood outside LA Superior Court holding a placard reading ‘End the Conservatorship.’

Taft who traveled 300 miles by bus from San Jose, California to be at the protest, added that Britney’s conservatorship - which has given her father, Jamie Spears strict supervision over her lifestyle and career for 11 years - has made her a ‘prisoner.’

’She should be set free and given back her rights. Her music is all about personal freedom - yet she herself is being denied that.’

Another protester who joined the crowd in chatting choruses of ’Free Britney’, Justin Pease, 32 ,of West Hollywood, CA, told DailyMail.com: ‘I’m here to raise awareness of the injustice that is being done to Britney. She is a cash cow for all theses other people - yet she’s not allowed any control over her money or her life. She has rights like everyone else.’

While the protesters marched up and down outside the courthouse carrying signs with slogans like ‘Let Britney Live on Her Own Terms’ and ‘The Conservator is Toxic,’ inside, Judge Brenda Penny cleared the courtroom and sealed the transcript from Wednesday’s hearing, saying issues being discussed - including Britney’s medical condition, her two sons and her personal finances - are too private and confidential to be aired in public.

Her father Jamie Spears, 67, and Britney’s mother Lynne, 64, were both in court along with a small army of lawyers representing them, the star herself, and the conservatorship.

On Wednesday, the SOS songstress was spotted in Itaewon, the cosmopolitan downtown shopping district of the South Korean capital, in an extremely low-cut hot pink sweetheart dress with buttoned clasps down the front revealing a pair of cantaloupe trousers underneath.

Rihanna's look was both romantic and sexy, with a busty display thanks to the skimpy sweetheart top of the dress and its spaghetti straps.

Indonesia parliament raises marital age for girls to 19

Rights groups have welcomed the Indonesian parliament’s decision to raise the marriage age for girls from 16 to 19 as a victory in the fight to end rampant child marriages.

The House of Representatives on Monday passed revisions to the country’s 1974 marriage law, increasing the marriageable age for women to 19. The marriage age for men remained unchanged at 19, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

“We are grateful. Even though we had wanted it raised to 21, at least 19 is no longer a minor,” said Budi Wahyuni, Deputy Chair of the National Commission on Violence against Women.

“It’s a compromise because we know there are still some people who are opposed [to the change],” she said.

The United Nations children’s agency (UNICEF), said Indonesia had the eighth-highest absolute number of child brides in the world, at almost 1.5 million, with 14 percent of girls in the country marrying before the age of 18.

A previous attempt by activists to have the law changed failed when the Constitutional Court rejected in 2015 a petition to raise the marriage age for girls.

But in a surprise ruling in December, a different set of judges at the court ordered the parliament to revise the law in response to a petition filed by former child brides.

Graphic: Fire in Liberia school kills dozens of children

Dozens of children were killed after a fire broke out at a religious school in Liberia on Wednesday.

The blaze started about midnight and gutted a dormitory and school building where students slept in Paynesville, on the outskirts of the Liberian capital, Monrovia, police spokesman Moses Carter said.

At least 26 young pupils and two teachers were killed, the president's office said. Carter said 27 students - between the ages of 10-20 - perished in the fire.

"The kids were learning the Quran when the fire broke out," he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Rescuers in white masks and surgical gloves carried the children's bodies in bags from the burned-out building as crowds of people and relatives crushed together outside.

Parents at the scene wailed and wept as police fought a surging crowd to make way for ambulances taking away the bodies.

Pastor Emmanuel Herbert from a nearby church told The Associated Press he and his congregation woke up to sounds of the fire and called for help.

"When I turned around to look the entire place was red. When I looked through the window, I saw the whole place blazing with fire," he said.

The fire was so strong there was no way to enter the buildings, the pastor said.

President George Weah has visited the site.

Again, Bobrisky risks arrest as group protest his lifestyle at NCAC

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), have advised controversial transgender personality, Idris Olarenwaju, aka ‘Bobrisky’, to stop promoting  Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender(LGBT) lifestyle or vacate Nigeria.

The youths issued the warning on Wednesday when members of NYCN took ‘Anti-LGBT’ protest to the headquarters of the NCAC in Abuja.

The youth in large numbers, carrying placards bearing different inscriptions, said they had declared Bobrisky a ‘persona non grata’ because he was a negative influence on Nigerian youths.

Comrade Akoshile Muktar, the Vice-President of NYCN (North Central), said Nigerian youths were against the activities of Bobrisky and urged NCAC as the custodian of Nigerian culture and values to make a declaration on the matter.

Muktar said: “Bobrisky should as a matter of safety and urgency leave the country if he must continue in his LGBT acts as it is alien to the culture and traditions of Nigeria.

NYCN describes the ‘Bobrisky brand’ as ungodly, unhealthy and disgusting and completely against our moral, cultural and spiritual values.

“We, therefore, declare Bobrisky as persona non grata, as he is a man and not a woman” he proclaimed.

“For national interest, we call on every combatant ready Nigeria youths and comrades of like minds to kick out Bobrisky as long as he has refused to change. Nigeria is not a place for LGBT and we shall fight to the end, as we call on the IGP and the Director-General of the DSS to use their good offices and men to stop Bobrisky.”

Muktar said the group had also protested to the National Assembly, DSS and Police headquarters, adding:  “we will not rest until Bobrisky is arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.”

Otunba Segun Runsewe, Director-General of NCAC, who received the youth, commended them for taking the bold step against the Bobrisky-led LGBT group.

He noted that the council under his watch was already fighting against Bobrisky and his transgender antics, describing him as ‘bad influence and harmful to Nigeria’s culture and morals.’

“I must commend the NYCN for leading Nigerian youths on this laudable protest against evil and a bad influence on our youths. As you are aware, the NCAC has already taken a stand against Bobrisky and his gang because Nigeria has culture and values which must be upheld.

“Anyone who wants to practice gay or transgender activities should leave us alone and go to places where it is accepted but not here. NCAC as an institution is taking steps towards ensuring that a bill against transgender and all such activities is presented before the National Assembly,” he said

Arrest of 123 men: Jigawa Assembly blasts Lagos Assembly over arrest of indigenes

The Jigawa State House of Assembly (JSHA) has expressed displeasure over the reaction of Lagos lawmakers to the arrest and subsequent release of 123 Jigawa indigenes by Lagos State Task Force operatives.

Alhaji Haruna Dangyatin, Member representing Miga Constituency, who brought the matter under “Matters of Urgent Public Interest” on Wednesday, described the reaction of the Lagos Assembly to the incident as “unfortunate”.

Dangyatin cited Sections 41, 42, and 43 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of 1999 (as amended) which guarantees freedom of movement in any part of Nigeria.

“It also provides freedom from discrimination and right to acquire and own movable property anywhere in Nigeria,” the Jigawa lawmaker said.

Members of the JSHA asked the Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Muhammadu Badaru and the Speaker, Alhaji Idris Garba, to table the matter at the Governors’ Forum and the Speakers’ Forum, respectively.

Majority Leader of Lagos State House of Assembly, Sanai Agunbiade, had condemned the release of 123 indigenes of Jigawa arrested by Task Force operatives with their motorcycles on entering the state in a suspicious manner.

The Lagos lawmaker had said at the plenary that the release of the men by the police was “a threat to the security of the state.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, DSP Bala Elkana, had in a statement said that the men were set free when nothing incriminating was found.

Witnesses said that the killing occurred at a place called “Treasure Base Hostel” in the town, on Tuesday evening.

It was further learnt that the 20-year-old Odeyemi is a 300-level student of the Department of Biology Education, while Iju, 22, was also a student of the institution.

According to the source, “the refusal of the boyfriend to meet up with her demand resulted in a hot argument between the two lovers which eventually led to a fight.

“While fighting, the deceased was said to have gained upper hand, a situation that forced the lady to use a sharp knife to stab her boyfriend in the chest.

“The deceased, who could not survive the deep cut, fell on the floor, with blood oozing out of his body.

Teen's 1981 murder is finally solved after 38 years

A Colorado murder mystery that baffled detectives for nearly four decades has been solved after one of the killer's relatives uploaded their DNA to a genetic genealogy database.

18-year-old Jeannie Moore was last seen hitching a ride to her job at a convenience store in
Lakewood on August 25, 1981, and her body was discovered five days later at a picnic ground in nearby Genesse Park.

An autopsy revealed that Moore had been r-ped and that she was killed by 'several blows to the head'.

Despite widespread media attention, and the fact that the murderer's semen was retrieved from a piece of Moore's clothing, the case went unsolved for almost 40 years.

However, a breakthrough came back in May, when the county's lead cold case detective, Elias Alberti, noted that California's infamous Golden State Killer had been identified after a relative uploaded their DNA to an ancestry website.

Given that investigators had a clean DNA sample from Moore's killer, Alberti decided to see whether there would be a possible match sitting in a database.

'It was a no-brainer,' the detective told The Denver Channel.

'We had no choice but to try to get in on it and see if we can use this technology to our benefit'.

The killer's semen sample was sent to United Data Connect who then uploaded it to Family Tree DNA.

Stunningly, it was revealed that someone related to the suspect had also put their results on the -database after they had taken a genetic genealogy test.

Alberti would not say which of the killer's relatives has taken the test, but family Tree DNA returned a list of the top 25 matches and detectives worked backwards to find a match.

After several weeks, investigators eventually matched the DNA to Donald Steven Perea, who died in May 2012 at age 54.

His daughter provided a DNA sample for the police, which revealed that Perea was 3.3 trillion times more likely than any other person to have killed Moore.

At the time Perea murdered Moore he has been out on bond after committing a separate violent r-pe.

FG inaugurates panel to recover N5tn AMCON debts

The Federal Government has inaugurated an inter-agency committee to recover N5tn debt owed the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo inaugurated the committee in Abuja, a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Laolu Akande, said on Tuesday.

The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, heads the committee.

Members of the committee include heads and representatives of AMCON, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, ICPC, Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the Federal Ministry of Justice.

“One of the terms of reference is for the committee to prepare a report, giving us a sense of what the time lines will be,” the VP was quoted as telling the members.

“About 67 per cent of the outstanding N5tn debt is said to be owed by just 20 individuals/entities”, the statement added.

The VP said the government had confidence in the agencies to deliver, using every available legal method.

Osinbajo said, “I know that given the kind of individuals here, you will definitely turn this whole narrative around. So, I wish you all very well.”

Prof. Owasanoye assured the VP that the panel would carry out the assignment dutifully.

Smugglers kill two while fleeing from Customs

Two persons on Tuesday were crushed to death in Akinale village in the Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State by a bus conveying cartons of turkey.

The bus was fleeing from men of the Nigeria Customs Service.

Punch correspondent gathered that the Customs officials chased the suspected smugglers along the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway. The suspects ran over two persons, including a vulcaniser, sitting by the roadside at Akinale near Wasimi in the Ewekoro Local Government Area.

Speaking with Punch on the killing, the Towulade of Akinale, Oba Olufemi Ogunleye, blamed the driver and the Customs men.

Oba Ogunleye described one of the victims (the vulcaniser) as a very hard-working man.

He said, “Today’s accident is unfortunate and regrettable. It is indiscipline by the driver and the government’s agency because the Customs ought to have nipped in the bud the question of smuggling right at the border not to be pursuing people on the main road.

“They were running after these people and after the accident, they ran away, they didn’t wait.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident.

Oyeyemi said, “It’s true. The Customs men were chasing the bus and it somersaulted and killed two people.”

N400m theft: Ex-GOC arrives court in wheelchair

The Nigerian Army on Tuesday began the trial of a former General Officer Commanding, 8 Division, Sokoto State, Maj. Gen. Hakeem Otiki, over the alleged diversion of N400m by five runaway soldiers attached to the division.

The trial at the General Court Marshal in Asokoro, Abuja, was presided over by the Nigerian Army Chief of Policy and Plans, Lt.-Gen Lamidi Adeosun.

The court has seven other Major-Generals as members.

The prosecuting counsel was led by Major J.S. Obot and has Majors I. Suleiman and Orumo as members.

The defence counsel for the embattled GOC is led by Okechukwu Ajunwa, a barrister, and supported by Major Femi Oyebanji (retd.) and Ishaq Adekunle.

The former GOC, Otiki, appeared to be ill and was brought into the court on a wheelchair, having beside him medical officers of the Nigerian Army who monitored him during the trial.

The Nigerian Army had on July 21 begun the quizzing of the former GOC over missing N400m said allegedly stolen by escort soldiers in the division.

The former GOC had been interrogated by the Directorate of Military Intelligence, the Special Intelligence Bureau and the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police.

Five soldiers had been confirmed to have carted away a consignment containing the money while on an escort duty from Sokoto State to Kaduna State in July.

The money was to be delivered to a “Very Important Personality” in Kaduna.

The army’s spokesman in 8 Division, Lieutenant Audu Arigu, had identified the runaway soldiers as Corporal Gabriel Oluwaniyi, Corporal Mohammed Aminu, one Corporal Haruna, Oluji Joshua and Hayatudeen.

Army sources said the runaway soldiers perfected their escape by turning in their rifles and their mobile phones at the Infantry Corps in Jaji, Kaduna State, on the day of theft before they escaped.

There was however drama at the court when Otiki was asked if he had any objection to the constitution of the GCM by the Chief of Army Staff.

His counsel, Maj.-Oyebanji (retd.) got up and said, “With due respect to the President of the GCM, I wish to invoke our right under Section 137 of the Armed Forces Act to object to the inclusion of the President of the court (Adeosun) because he bears grudges against Maj.-Gen Otiki and he might not get a fair trial under you.

“Going back to the Nigerian Defence Academy, Otiki entered the NDA on January 3, 1983, while Lt.-Gen Adeosun entered NDA on July 4, 1983. It is a fact that Gen Otiki trained and punished you (General Adeosun) while in the NDA.

“It is a fact that Maj.-Gen Otiki as GOC, 8 division, conducted Operation Sharan Daji and Operation Harbin Kunama which were directly under you (Lt. Gen Adeosun) as the Chief of Training and Operations.”

He added, “It is also a fact that he (Otiki) took over as Commander, Infantry Corps from you (Lt. Gen Adeosun) and inherited the soldiers, who were your personal aides and who form the crux of this Court Martial. So I believe the President will not be fair.”

While the conversation went on, the army authorities asked journalists to leave the court martial around 1.30pm and they were prevented from the continued hearing of the trial.

Photo: Police arrest three 'clerics' for fraud, r.a.p.e

The police have arrested three self-acclaimed Islamic clerics for allegedly swindling unsuspecting members of the public and raping their female victims in Ogun State.

Police spokesperson in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, on Tuesday said Aliu Abdulfatai (50), Sule Adebayo (36) and Lekan Olokodana (31) were arrested following a report by a woman (name withheld).

Mr Oyeyemi said the woman reported at Adigbe police station that she was duped of N70,000 by the suspects, while one of them also raped her.

He said the complainant, who is a marketer with a popular property/real estate company, was on an assignment when she met the suspects who claimed to be Islamic clerics and indicated interest in purchasing a large expanse of land.

The suspects allegedly claimed they wanted to build a mosque on the land but immediately persuaded the woman to have a special prayer after which they told her she was under a spell which needed a special deliverance prayer to cast out.

“As a result of this, they succeeded in fraudulently obtaining the sum of N70, 000 from her after they lured her into their house where one of them raped her,” the police spokesperson said.

“On the strength of her complaint, the DPO Adigbe division, CSP Augustine Opadile, detailed his detectives to go after these hoodlums and bring them to justice. Their efforts paid off when three amongst them were apprehended while waiting for the victim to bring the money they demanded, and one of them escaped.”

Mr Oyeyemi said, on interrogation, the suspects confessed to being fraudsters. He said the investigations further revealed that one of the suspects had used the proceeds of their fraudulent acts to build a private school in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

“They, however, requested that they be granted operational powers, to which the Zonal Head, Mr Garba Dugum refused and advised them to rather report all perceived corrupt practices to the commission.”
