Police arrest eight as cult clash claims one in Itire

Rival cult gangs on sunday engaged in a deadly duel on Oseni Street at the Itire area of Lagos, killing one and vandalising several vehicles in the process.

In recent times, Itire has become the theater of deadly gun duels between rival cultists.

To safeguard their lives and properties from the rampaging cultists, residents have now resorted to self help by hiring local vigilant groups, a move that hasn’t totally eradicated the menace.

According to the residents, the reign of terror of these cult groups has almost become the norm despite constant raids by the police.

In Sunday’s clash, some gang members had carried out a reprisal on the opposing cult group over the death of their colleague last Saturday.

One of the cult groups had attacked a member of the opposing gang, killing him in cold blood, an act which drew the ire of his gang.

Based on a tip off that the perpetrators were lounging in a bar at Itire, the affected gang stormed there and engaged them in a gun duel.

Following a signal to that effect, the Area Commander, Area D, ACP Aliko Dankoli, and his men stormed the area to quell the situatio.

Also on ground as a first responder was the Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), DCP Tunji Disu, who alongside his men, rounded up some of the suspects in their patrol van.

As at press time, the police had arrested eight persons suspected to be members of the different cult groups in Itire.

Also, the police have brought the situation under control, while normalcy has returned to the area.

Also confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, said:

“Police received a distress call of a fire outbreak at Chukwuma Hotel by Babashola Street, Itire.

“A combined team of policemen and firefighters was mobilised to the scene. The fire was eventually put off. Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was set by some cult groups Eiye and Aiye Confraternity, that clashed at a drinking joint in the hotel.

“Trouble started at about 2200 hours when a hot argument ensued between members of two rival gangs in the joint. The son of the owner of the hotel, who is now at large, was said to have stabbed a member of a rival gang identified as Aliu Lamidi, 29 years old, of Aboredhade Street, on the neck.

“The victim was rushed to hospital where he eventually died. Three vehicles that were parked by the road side were also burned. Eight suspects were arrested in connection with the incident. Security is beefed up in the affected area. Investigation is ongoing and the suspects will be charged to court.”

Atiku prepares to file 70-point appeal against Buhari at the Supreme Court

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the last general election, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, really means business to overturn the verdict of the Presidential Elections Petitions Tribunal, PEPT, that confirmed President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election.

According to Thisdaylive.com, lawyers of Atiku have concluded plans to file a 70-point appeal at the Supreme Court tomorrow, to beat Wednesday’s deadline.

One of Atiku’s lawyers said: “We will file latest on Monday, September 23, and at most, due to any unforeseen reason, by September 24. Bear in mind that the deadline for submission is Wednesday. We won’t file on Wednesday for tactical reasons.”

According to the source, one of the 70 grounds of appeal is that “the judgement of the PEPT was based on the facts; the judgement was not on the issues presented to the Court of Appeal presidential tribunal by the petitioner, especially in relation to the respondent’s academic qualifications.”

“Take, for instance, one of the respondent’s witnesses, Major General Paul Tarfa (rtd), called by President Muhammadu Buhari’s lawyers said that they did not give their qualifications to the Military Board. Tarfa’s testimony is against the claim by Buhari that the Nigeria military is in possession of his certificates.

“Secondly, Buhari said that he was recruited into the military in 1961 and Tarfa said in 1962, so what is the correct date of his recruitment into the army. Somebody is not telling the truth.

“The issue in question is who entered the different grades for him from both the Cambridge and the West African School Certificate results. This is the first time that the court will say that the documents are admitted in the interest of justice. So, who entered the different grades for him and if he did it, why?

“One of the grounds of appeal is that the President’s Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, brought the Cambridge documents dated July 18 and testified on July 20. The point here is that it was not pleaded, when the respondent replied to the petitions of Atiku. So, speaking as in point of law, you don’t speak on documents not pleaded.

“The WAEC documents contradicted the Cambridge documents. This is a case of forgery, inconsistency in documents.”
The lawyer added, “On the INEC server, the judgement of the PEPT said the INEC server was hacked and we then asked, which of the servers was hacked?

“The tribunal judgement was based on the Electoral Act section 52 (1) (B), but this aspect of the law has since been deleted in 2015. It is no longer in existence. This was the case in Wike Vs Peterside.

“If the judgement said INEC server was recklessly hacked, then, there is a server and, therefore, a criminal offence. Yet, INEC did not claim so or that its documents were stolen. How come the judge reached this scandalous decision?

“If section 52 (1) (B) is no longer in existence, how come the lead judgement came to this decision? It was not based on the documents pleaded. Therefore, how come it was decided so? That means that the judge went on a voyage of discoveries and exploration. Buhari was not accused of forgery. Rather, he was accused of lying, when he said the army was in possession of his documents

“In his form CF001, he presented an affidavit, instead of his certificates. PEPT relied on the CV presented. We are asking, is that supposed to be so? CV is basically to show working experience. No Primary School certificate. The judgement was based on inferences. The judge simply inferred.

“We are surprised that the PEPT went the way it did. It is our view that the judges would have gone further to help improve our electoral laws as well as use it to commence the reform of the electoral laws. So, these are some of the issues that form the grounds of the 70 points of appeal at the Supreme Court.”

Xenophobic attacks: Nigerian union may head to World Court

The President, Nigerian Union South Africa, Adetola Olubajo, has said the group may head to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands, over the xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals, including Nigerians, in South Africa.

Olubajo, who spoke to Sunday Punch in a telephone interview, said they might file charges against the South African government in South Africa before heading to the ICJ if justice was not served.

He said, “The international law that is binding Nigeria, South Africa and all the (other African) countries should be invoked because this is happening time and again. It is not a one-off thing.

“But I would prefer that we start internally by testing it in the law courts of South Africa — the malicious damage of property and looting. If that doesn’t work, then we would head to the African Union and the ICJ.

“I don’t have any problem with that, seriously, because this thing (xenophobic attacks) has continued. If the attacks persist, then we will do what needs to be done.”

The Nigerian Mission in South Africa said although no Nigerian died in the latest attacks, over 50 vehicles and property worth millions of dollars owned by Nigerians were vandalised, burnt and stolen.

The Nigerian Consul General in Johannesburg, Mr Godwin Adama, said this while reacting to the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other foreigners in Pretoria and Johannesburg on August 28 and September 1.

The crisis resulted in the death of five foreigners, as well as the looting and burning of property.

At least 502 Nigerians have since been evacuated from South Africa in two batches.

Drop charges against Sowore, AI urges Buhari

Global rights group, Amnesty International, has lambasted the Federal government for charging Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, with treason for insulting the President.

AI, in a series of tweets on Saturday described the move as dictatorial and unwarranted.

It called on the government to immediately release him and drop all the charges.

It said “Amnesty International condemns the bizarre charges pressed on activist Omoyele for expressing his views in media interviews.

“The trumped up charges he is facing show an attempt by the Nigerian authorities to deprive him of his human rights.

“Sowore’s continued incarceration on application of the Terrorism Act for exercising his right to freedom of expression is a misuse of the criminal system to silence dissent.

“We call on the Nigerian authorities to respect and protect human rights of all persons without discrimination and ensure that it does not use its laws to justify violations of Sowore’s human rights.”

Man who killed Ondo APC chieftain sentenced to death

A 25-year-old man , David Seimiyengha, has been sentenced to death by an Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure, the state capital, for committing kidnapping and murder.

The convict and two other accomplices, Fikesei Inuesokan and Bekewei Francis, were arrested by men of the Ondo State Police Command in 2017 for killing one Olumide Odimayo at Igbotu, in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Until his murder, Odimayo was a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in the local government.

The defendants were said to have kidnapped and murdered Odimayo, which informed their arrest by the Police. They were also charged to court thereafter.

They were arraigned before the court on four counts of conspiracy to commit felony, kidnapping, unlawful possession of firearms and murder.

The judge, Justice Ademola Bola, while delivering his judgement, sentenced Seimiyengha to death by hanging.

The court, however, held that there was no enough evidence to show that the second and third defendants —Inuesokan and Francis —committed the offence.

It thereby discharged and acquitted them.

Charges against Sowore confirm’s FG’s unprecedented level of paranoia — Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, says the Muhammadu Buhari administration has attained an “unprecedented level of paranoia” following the charges of treason filed against the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.

In a statement on Saturday, Soyinka said the nation had failed to learn from past experiences.

He said, “This is utterly depressing news. So, the Sowore affair has moved beyond harassment and taken on a sinister direction. Outside the country where I happened to be engaged at the moment, I can testify that the immediate reaction around me was to dismiss this as yet another grotesque product of fake news, of which Nigerians have become the greatest practitioners. I confess that I also joined in this school of thought – at the start.

“Further checks have however confirmed that this government has indeed attained an unprecedented level of paranoia. I do not believe that the Justice department itself believes in these improbable charges, as formally publicised.

So, once again, we inscribe in our annals another season of treasonable felony, History still guards some lessons we have yet to digest, much less from which to learn. Welcome to the Club, Mr. Omoyele Sowore.”

The Federal Government had on Friday filed seven counts of treasonable felony and money laundering against Sowore.

I will make sure the policeman who slapped me is punished, ID Cabasa vows

Popular producer, ID Cabasa, was a victim of police harassment during the week when he was dealt a dirty slap by a police officer. Cabasa had taken to his Instagram page to narrate what happen.

According to the producer, a man driving a Range Rover had almost hit the Uber he was in, and when they got down to settle the issue, some overzealous policemen in the area had slapped him before realising who he was.

In a chat with Sunday Scoop, Cabasa revealed that the policeman in question had been arrested and he would pursue the case to its logical conclusion to serve as a deterrent to others.

He said, “When the policeman slapped me, I intentionally didn’t retaliate. I just picked my phone and called other police officers that I knew. At that point, people had gathered and were shouting at the policeman that didn’t he know my identity? His colleagues then started pleading with me on his behalf to forgive him. He also came to me personally to beg.

However, I told him I was not fighting for myself but for other people because if it were someone else that doesn’t have a voice, that is the same way the person would have been assaulted. Because of that, I am going to pursue the case to a logical conclusion. Eventually, the policemen that I called arrived and picked him up. They remanded him in their custody while I wrote a statement detailing what happened. I feel he needs to be punished, and I am also happy that the Uber driver was protected.”

APC snatches one House seat from PDP in Oyo

Oyo State House of Assembly Tribunal on Saturday nullified the election of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Kazeem Olayanju, representing Irepo /Olorunsogo, and declared All Progressives’ Congress (APC) candidate Azeez Ajibola winner of the March 9 poll.

Justice Anthony Akpovi declared APC’s Ajibola as the authentic winner of the House of assembly election.

Ajibola had challenged the election of PDP’s Olayanju on the ground that INEC falsely declared that election did not hold in Irepo Ward 3 because result for the ward was burnt at collation centre.

But the tribunal held that the election held and the result was issued as Ajibola tendered the carbon copy of the result issued to APC agent at the polling unit to establish his case.

Justice Akpovi, in his judgment, said APC scored a total of 12, 224 votes while PDP scored 12, 070 votes in the election.

Akpovi said the difference was 154 votes and declared APC as the winner.

30-year old man who robs prostitutes nabbed in Edo

A 30-year old man, Godstime Ogechi, who specialises in robbing prostitutes in Ugbiyoko, Egor local government area, has been arrested by men of the Edo State Police Command.

Ogechi is a one-man gang that uses a rod-like gun to rob call girls on the pretext of paying them to spend the night with him.

When he takes them to a dark street, he would bring out the rod and the girls thinking that it is a gun would give him their phones and money including the one he paid them.

Luck ran out on him when one of his victims ran away when they got to a dark street at Ugbiyoko area and when Ogechi went back to collect the money he paid her for the night, some girls recognised him which led to his arrest.

According to him, “I don’t have any gang. I operate along Ekenwan road. I pick street girls at night and rob them. I will chat with them and tell them I want to take them for day break. When we get to a dark corner, I will bring out this thing like a gun and threaten them.

“They will give me their phones. I cannot remember the number of girls I have robbed. I was caught when one of the girls ran away after I have paid her. I went back to the spot I picked her from and demanded for my money, where she raised alarm.”
