President of the Trade Union Congress, Quadri Olaleye, has said that the organisation had commenced mobilisation of members ahead of a nationwide protest, adding that they would not embark on a warning strike.
The TUC’s position comes after the failure of the Nigerian Government to implement the new minimum wage of N30,000.
In a statement, the organised labour said that it would not guarantee industrial peace in Nigeria if the government failed to hold a meeting with it and accept its demand on the consequential salary adjustment arising from the new minimum wage.
Labour said it had demonstrated a great deal of restraint, consideration and patience with government in arriving at the demand of 29 per cent salary increase for officers on salary levels 07 to 14 and 24 per cent adjustment for officers on salary grade levels 15 to 17.
The statement said the alleged nonchalant attitude of the government negotiating side had dragged negotiations for consequential wages adjustment unduly, adding that Nigerian workers had exercised tremendous patience and restraint already.
Olaleye said, “We had already begun mobilisation of our members for an industrial action long before we made the pronouncement.
“We have given instructions on mobilisation to our members in the states and all council areas.
“If by October 16 government fails to do what we expect, we will start our action with a rally. On the second day (October 17), the strike will begin.
“We are not going to give any warning strike this time round. We have threatened to go on strike on many occasions.”
The Lagos State Government has directed the major food vendors, who sell meat in the state, to henceforth submit a ‘veterinary health certificate for trade of meat’ to the inspecting veterinary personnel in the state Ministry of Agriculture.
Prince Gbolahan Lawal, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, made the announcement on Sunday, in Lagos.
Gbolahan said that the state government would confirm the certificates to ascertain that the animal had been duly slaughtered under hygienic conditions.
He noted that this policy, apart from being part of the new strategies the government was adopting, was also aimed at sanitising the meat value chain.
Gbolahan said that the policy was in conformity with Section 4, Cap M3, Meat Inspection Law of Lagos State and the Fourth Schedule (Regulation 33) of the Law.
He added that the policy change was informed by reports about the terrible state of sanitary affairs in some abattoirs in the state and the embarrassment it could cause for the image of the state and the confidence in the meat value chain.

Actor and son of the legendary filmmaker, Ade Afolayan (Ade Love), Aremu, is undoubtedly a fine role interpreter. However, apart from his talent, there have also been several insinuations online that the heavily built dude is a gigolo, serving as a boy toy, for older high profile women.
Responding to such insinuations in a chat with Sunday Scoop, Afolayan said, “That is an old gist, and I really don’t want to talk about it. But, even if I am doing that, it is nobody’s business. I am sure (the people talking, would) also want to do that (if they had the opportunity).
I am a business man, and you can actually refer to me as a prostitute in business. I sell cars, clothes, wrist watches, and many other things. Dating someone older than one is different from someone older paying one’s bills. I don’t think there is anything wrong in dating or marrying someone older than one.”
A teacher who was forced to quit her job after having s.e.x with a 16-year-old pupil is now happily married to him - and they have three children together.
Natasha Miller was 23 when she met Hayden MacDonald who had been a pupil at Tararua College in New Zealand.
Thirteen years later they are still together and are both teachers in the area, the NZ Herald reports.
The initial story broke in 2006 with the Herald reporting that Miller had quit her job after confessing she was in a s3xual relationship with her year 12 English student.
Hayden's mother Gaile said she noticed Hayden started to shower more often and groom himself before going to class.
Her son also openly admitted he had Ms Miller's number in his phone.
After being confronted by Hayden's parents Miller was offered the choice of ending the relationship or resigning.
She drove to the principal's house and handed in her resignation.
She had been gaining the experience required before she could apply to be a registered teacher.
Because she was not registered, the Teachers’ Council did not investigate.
Miller and Macdonald at that stage were engaged and had a baby. Macdonald also had plans to become a teacher and was working part-time as a music tutor at Dannevirke High School.
Miller is now a Year 9 dean in pastoral care.
The couple now live in Fielding with their three children — two girls and a boy.
Macdonald is a year 10 dean at Palmerston North Boys’ High.
"We are happy and all that,” he told the Herald on Sunday last week.
"Our relationship has lasted the distance, that’s all I want to say."
It seems all is not well with Nollywood filmmaker and actor, Kunle Afolayan's marriage. It's been reported that the actor's marriage has crashed over alleged 'infidelity' and now, it looks like this is very true. The reports also claimed that his wife, Tolu and mother of his four kids has allegedly moved out of their home.
The actor recently celebrated his 45th birthday and from the photos he shared on his instagram page, it shows his wife was absent at the event.
His appreciation note also carefully excluded his wife of many years. In his thank you note, the actor wrote; ''My heart is full of gratitude. Thank you to my children for the wonderful surprise, my mother for her prayers always, my brothers and sisters, my friends for always being there, my partners''.
Six elephants drowned at a waterfall in Thailand while apparently trying to save a calf, according to national park officials.
Veterinarians are monitoring the conditions of two other elephants that saw the ordeal, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation said in its latest statement on Sunday.
They are now safe after making their way out of the water on their own, the statement added.
Officials had been planning a rescue.
According to media reports, park officials initially discovered a 3-year-old elephant drowning in the Haew Narok Waterfall, part of the Khao Yai National Park, about 160 kilometres north-east of Bangkok.
Two other elephants had been watching the infant from a cliff. People nearby heard loud cries from the distressed animals in the early hours of Saturday morning, the parks department said.
The young elephant did not survive and officials found five other drowned elephants on the first level of the large three-tiered waterfall, which has been temporarily closed to visitors.

A woman is facing jail after she went topless in her own home. Tilli Buchanan, 27, from Utah, USA, was with her husband Jared and his three children when she removed her top.
The couple had been installing insulation in their garage when they stripped down to their underwear.
Ms Buchanan told the kids not to be "embarrassed" as there was no difference between her being topless and their father.
But the story reportedly got back to the children's mother, who made a complaint that has ended up with Buchanan in court.
However West Valley City Deputy Attorney Corey Sherwin said Buchanan stripped down in front of her stepchildren after announcing that if her husband was allowed to take off his shirt, then a woman should be able to as well, according to Mail Online.
The prosecution case continues that Buchanan, while “under the influence of alcohol,” had told her husband that she would only put her shirt back on if he showed her his penis.
Buchanan faces three counts of lewdness involving a child, which is a class A misdemeanour that could not only land her in jail and see her placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years.
Utah state law covering lewdness involving a child says that no woman should expose their breast “below the top of the areola,” either in public or “in a private place under circumstances the person should know will likely cause affront or alarm or with the intent to arouse or gratify the sexual desire of the actor or the child.”

A bride had her dad’s ashes glued into her acrylic nails so she could fulfil his promise of walking her down the aisle.
Charlotte Walton had hoped her father would be there to give her away when she married her partner Nick, 33, on August 30, 2019.
Tragically her father, Mick Barber, died of cancer in April, rendering the dream impossible.
While no substitute for having her dad there in person, the 26-year-old's cousin Kirsty had the idea to having Mick's ashes suspended in her acrylic nail.
Charlotte, a car dealer, said: “Kirsty is the queen of nails and I thought her idea was amazing.
“I was always a huge daddy’s girl, we all were, whenever we asked for anything he would say no first but then he would feel bad and would do it five minutes later.
“He was diagnosed with cancer which was incurable, at that point we knew we had to move quick so that he could be there to watch me marry Nick.
“I was heartbroken when he lost his battle because I knew how much he wanted to see us marry, I wanted him to be there but it wasn’t meant to be."
“Having the ashes attached to my nails felt like he was holding my hand, I knew it wasn’t the same as him really being there, but it was as close as we could get," she said.
“It was a unique thing to do but I loved it, I felt like he was able to walk me down the aisle, which I knew was something he really wanted to do.
“I suppose the funny side of it was that people asked me what I would do with the nails once they fell off as if I was going to throw them away.
“I loved having him there with me even if it was just in spirit, but with his ashes attached to me as I walked to wed my husband it felt like the next best thing.
“The wedding was incredible, and everyone loved the nails.”

Rapheal Onwugbolu has bagged two years jail term for internet fraud. The conviction followed his prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC before Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on two counts bordering on cybercrime.
One of the charges reads: “That you, Raphael Ifedora Onwugbolu (a.k.a Jeffrey Hanks) sometime in 2006 at Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, fraudulently impersonated one Jeffrey Hanks, an American medical doctor based in South Africa, with intent to obtain property to wit: the sum of $5,000 (Five Thousand United States Dollars) from one Maria Sandas, an American resident, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 22(2)(b)(ii) of the Cyber Crimes (Prohibition Prevention, etc) Act, 2015 and punishable under the same Act.”
He pleaded guilty to all the charges. Following his ‘guilty plea’, prosecuting counsel, Olanrewaju Adeola, informed the court of a plea bargain agreement entered with the defence team, and urged the court to adopt same and sentence the defendant based on the terms of the agreement.
In his response, defence counsel, Adaji Abel pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, saying the defendant has become a changed person since 2006 when the offence was committed.
Justice Taiwo adopted the terms of the plea bargain and convicted him accordingly.
A truck driver identified as Kazeem has allegedly killed his wife, Raimot, for visiting her mother.
The incident happened penultimate Monday at their residence at Agbalagada compound in Adatan area of Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Sources said the couple had been engaging in scuffles following which Raimot reported Kazeem to her mother. Kazeem was said to have warned his wife against visiting her mother.
It was said that Raimot who previously had a son called Farouk with an unnamed man visited her son who lives with her mother.
The visit was said to have angered Kazeem who told Raimot on her mobile phone not to return home in her own interest for defying his order against visiting her mother.
The deceased however returned home to Kazeem, who descended on her leading to a fight.
It was in the middle of the scuffle that Kazeem subjected Raimot to brutality, dragging her on the street till she passed out.
Kazeem on realising the consequences of his action rushed his breathless wife to a nearby hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
A source said: ‘’After a private hospital had rejected Raimot because doctors there said she was brought in dead, her husband took her to a public hospital at Ijaiye area of Abeokuta, but doctors again told him to take her body to mortuary because she was dead.
‘’Before now, she had constantly subjected his late wife to beatings and molestation, so much so that his mother in–law had to invite policemen from Adatan Division to arrest him. He however did not stop to brutalise her despite the warning by the police.
It was learnt that Kazeem lied to men of a police division at Lafenwa, Abeokuta, that Raimot died after she collapsed while fetching water in the neighbourhood.
Family members and neighbours of the deceased however explained to the police that Kazeem actually killed his wife.
It was gathered that Kazeem has since bolted without any trace, while the remains of the deceased have been buried according to Islamic injunctions.
Confirming the incident, police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi said operatives were still on the trail of Kazeem.
‘’We are still looking for the suspect, Kazeem. He rushed to the police claiming his wife had an accident. But family members of the deceased and sources in the neighbourhood later revealed that he was actually the one who allegedly beat his wife to death.
‘’ The mistake the family members made was to raise the alarm on sighting Kazeem instead of alerting the police to arrest him, which made the suspect to run away. However, we are not going to relent until we arrest him.’’
A political group in Nigeria says there are fresh plots aimed at tarnishing the reputation of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo by some political actors from within the Presidency referred to as ‘the cabal.’
The Initiative to Save Democracy (ISD) says there is a calculated attempt by the cabal in collusion some South West leaders to peddle outright falsehood, fake news and lies against the Vice President.
In a press statement issued on Saturday and signed by the Peter Oladele, Secretary of ISD, the group said it has reliable information that the cabal would stop at nothing to distract the Vice President from doing his work.
The group said they were working tirelessly to malign the Vice President’s reputation and integrity after they could not find any wrongdoing evidence against him.
“The first thing they attempted to do was to destroy the relationship between the President and Vice President but that has not worked despite deploying different strategies from inside and outside.
“Then they tried to malign the Vice President’s reputation by throwing up all sorts of trump charges against him but with no evidence of wrongdoing that soon crumbled.
“They even referred to the N5.8 billion NEMA Emergency Intervention, the N90 billion FIRS Campaign Fund and other fake news but all those failed too because they were fake news from the beginning. They even went after those who have backed the Vice President,” the statement said.
ISD then explained that the cabal is cooking more fake news and lies against the VP and that this time, it was in conjunction with South West leaders.
