A jury found Amber Guyger guilty of murder on Tuesday for the killing of a black man, Botham Jean in September, 2018. The former Dallas police officer now faces 5 to 99 years in prison.
The jury deliberated on Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning over whether Guyger was guilty of murder or manslaughter when she shot her upstairs neighbor on September 6, 2018. She was still in uniform when she fatally shot Jean, and had just ended her shift when she returned to the apartment complex where they both lived in Dallas.
Applause could be heard from the audience and the late Jean’s family could be seen in tears after the verdict was announced.
The case has received national attention following nationwide debate about police misconduct against people of color. Guyger is white and Jean was black. Judge Tammy Kemp reignited the debate on Monday after deciding the jury could consider the state’s “Castle Doctrine,” a legal exception that says a person in their home is not required to retreat before using deadly force on an intruder.
“This is a victory for black people in America,” Jean family attorney Lee Marritt told reporters after the verdict was announced.
Guyger was originally charged with manslaughter three days after the shooting took place. She was later fired by the Dallas Police Department and charges were increased to murder. The jury had to decide if she was guilty of either murder or the lesser charge of manslaughter.
In closing arguments on Monday, Guyger’s defense argued that the state had to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that her actions weren’t self-defense.
“You don’t, as the jurors in this case, decide this case on emotion and sympathy,” defense attorney Toby Shook said, addressing the jury. “Who would not have sympathy for Botham Jean? Wonderful human being... but that is not part of your consideration as a juror.”
The prosecution argued that Guyger could not claim self-defense if she was the intruder in the wrong apartment, and that she missed key cues along her path from her car to Jean’s apartment that should have made her aware she was in the wrong place.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s Independence Day broadcast as an insult on the psyche of Nigerians and a mockery of the nation’s integrity.
The party said the President’s speech was completely unpresidential, lacking in patriotic stance and replete with manifest inconsistencies, contradictions, paradoxes and false performance claims.
In a statement Tuesday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the main opposition party said the President’s broadcast was a “mockery of democracy” and has further confirmed that the country is in wrong hands.
It noted that President Buhari, in his recorded address, failed to forcefully address the key issues of freedom, social justice, constitutional order, separation of powers, rule of law, human rights, credible elections, national cohesion, accountability and transparency in government.
According to the PDP, President Buhari ignored these very fundamentals of an independent state, because his administration had violated them all.
It expressed regrets that the President had no forceful reassurances on the challenge of escalated insecurity under his watch.
“He (President) had no clear-cut and operable blueprint to revamp our economy, which his administration wrecked in a period of four years, resulting in so much hardship and despondency that Nigerians now resort to suicide and slavery abroad as options.
“Our party notes that this address further exposes that the Buhari Presidency is not interested in nation building; that it is completely disconnected from the people and remains insensitive to the plights of Nigerians”, the PDP said.
The party further stated that if anything, the President only succeeded in further demonstrating that his administration is, indeed, in no position to deliver an acceptable independence address.
This PDP lamented that under Buhari, the nation has experienced the worst form of violations.

A witness who was key to the murder conviction of Amber Guyger, the former Dallas police officer who opened fire on her neighbor Botham Jean in his own apartment, was shot to death 10 days after testifying in the high-profile trial, according to a lawyer representing the Jean family.
Joshua Brown, who lived in the same apartment complex as Jean and Guyger’s and overheard their fatal encounter, was “shot several times by an unknown assailant” on Friday night, civil rights lawyer Lee Merritt said Saturday night on Twitter. Brown was a 28-year-old Lancaster, Tex., native and former University of South Florida football player who ran his own business in Dallas.
“His murder underscores the reality of the black experience in America,” Merritt wrote. “A former athlete turned entrepreneur — Brown lived in constant fear that he could be the next victim of gun violence, either state sanctioned or otherwise.”
The Dallas Police Department has not confirmed that Brown was the man killed, noting that the victim wasn’t carrying identification. In an emailed statement, the department said officers had responded to reports of a shooting just after 10:30 p.m. at Atera Apartments at 4606 Cedar Springs Rd. Merritt said Brown was living there after moving from the South Side Flats, where he, Guyger and Jean resided when Guyger killed Jean in September 2018.
Authorities arrived at the Atera complex Saturday night to find a man lying on the ground in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics took him to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he died of his injuries.
“Several witnesses heard several gunshots and observed a silver four-door sedan leaving the parking lot at a high rate of speed,” police said, adding that there are not yet any suspects.
The fatal shooting came two days after jurors sentenced Guyger to 10 years in prison for the murder of Jean, 26, a St. Lucia-born accountant and church singer. That a white officer had killed an unarmed black man in his home sparked widespread outrage and protests in Dallas.
Some saw Guyger’s conviction as a victory in the national push for police accountability. Her sentence — on the low end of the 99 years the jury could have given — prompted criticism from observers and a stunning act of forgiveness from Jean’s younger brother.
Two suspected robbers, who lured a computer dealer to a desolate location and dispossessed him of 3 Apple laptops valued at N1.5 million, at gun point have been arrested by the operatives of the Lagos Rapid Response Squad.
The suspects, Victor Remi (27), a forex trader and Ekeh Maxwell, 23, a musician, were arrested on Monday, weeks after their heist.
The suspects, both residents of 18, Alexandra Street, Abule Egba, Lagos, disclosed that they got all the details of their victim through his twitter handle.
They added that they opened up conversation with him immediately and placed an order for two Apple laptops (MacBook Pro – 2018 edition).
According to Remi, a South Africa returnee, “I told the dealer I was the Managing Director of a new company in Acme Road, Ikeja. I also told him that my daughter recommended him and that his laptops are legit. I ordered one for myself and another for my secretary.
“It took us a week to initiate, perfect our plan and execute it. My colleague, Maxwell borrowed his brother’s Camry (FKJ 833 EZ) for the deed. We bought a toy gun and painted it. While Maxwell drove, I whatsApp the dealer that he brings the consignment to my office. I told him that my driver would pick him up at Acme Crescent.
“We met him there. He entered the vehicle while the driver picked me up few meters from where he entered. He was sitting in front with the laptops. I placed the gun on his neck and ordered him to surrender them. We wanted to take his phone too but he pleaded not to be stripped of everything. We told him to alight from the car and we escaped.”
Sources disclosed that Remi told his accomplice that the three Apple laptops were two instead of three. The source added that Remi lied to his partner that he sold each of the two laptops, N250,000 each instead of the N500,000 their original market value which he sold them. “He gave Maxwell N250,000”, he added. The suspect confirmed this when questioned.
According to the computer dealer, who does not want his name mentioned, “one Uche ordered for two Apple laptops. We were communicated on WhatsApp. I never had an inkling that they were robbers. They used a gun and knife to dispossess me of the laptops. The three laptops are worth N1.5 million”.
The three Apple laptops have so far been recovered from their buyers while they reportedly threw away the toy gun after the operation.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Zubairu Muazu in his reaction to the arrest of the suspects advised Lagosians to moderate the amount of information they expose publicly through the social media, adding that criminal minded elements are exploiting the social media to perpetrate crime. He restated the commitment of the Command to remain unrelenting in the pursuit of criminals in the state.

The Federal Government has urged tourists and travellers to be careful wherever they notice the presence of Nigerian crossdresser Okuneye Idris Olarenwaju, popularly known as Bobrisky, mostly as it concerns sharing of public facilities, including toilets.
This was in a reaction to a disturbing report received by the Federal Government on how Bobrisky, caused a stir at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja after he used a female toilet.
Otunba Segun Runsewe, Director-General of National Centre for Arts and Culture, a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, has said by using the female toilet, Bobrisky had constituted a serious threat to Nigeria and Nigerians.
He also appealed to the leadership of Nigeria Medical Association to enlighten people on the dangers of women sharing public toilet with Bobrisky.
Otunba Segun Runsewe told Punch, “Bobrisky is a serious health hazard for Nigeria and Nigerians. The health hazard Bobrisky has is worse than Ebola Virus Disease; travellers and tourists should be careful wherever they notice the presence of Bobrisky, mostly as it affects sharing of public facilities.
“Women are prone to get various types of disease from the toilet than sexual intercourse. Now, Bobrisky will enter the same toilet with a woman and at the end the woman will contract some kind of diseases.
“When she gets home and sleeps with her husband and the husband discovers he has been infected, the next thing is to seek for divorce without knowing the actual cause of how the wife was infected.”
He added, “In the first place, Bobrisky’s passport shows that he is a man. Why should he turn himself to a woman and use women’s toilets? At the end of the day, innocent Nigerian women who go to same toilet will now be infected with what they did not bargain for.
“If Bobrisky is even using men’s toilet, we can understand. As I speak, we got a report of how a woman was very upset with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria because on this day she saw Bobrisky using female toilet in Abuja Airport.
“Well, for me, we have done our little bit; we have left everything for the medical practitioners.”
The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State in the last elections, Senator Buruji Kashamu, said he joined the race to fight injustice.
Kashamu made the statement while reacting to the claims that he was not serious with his governorship ambition, while some said he joined to seek immunity.
Kashamu who rebuffed the claims said, it would be unreasonable for anyone to commit the kind of resources he committed to the electoral process without a plan to win. He stressed that he gave his all in the election as he was ready to fight impunity and injustice.
“I hate injustice with a passion. I can give anything to fight injustice. We put in our best. But the protracted court case had adverse effect on our supporters and mobilisation efforts. We thank God that the rule of law prevailed and we were on the ballot against the expectations of the lawbreakers,” a statement quoted Kashamu to have said in an interview.
Kashamu, who represented Ogun East in the 8th National Assembly, said he had in since gone back to his cotton and hospitality businesses after his governorship ambition hit the rock.
