Gunmen in military uniform kidnap 9 persons in Abuja

Kidnappers pierced Abuja ‘safety net’ on Monday night and made away with nine persons in the Kuje area of the city.

According to a TVC report, among the people kidnapped was a 12-year-old boy.

The kidnapping happened in Pegi community, a resettlement area in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Witnesses said the kidnappers dressed in military camouflage struck around 8:00pm.

Several weeks ago, the Inspector general of police, Mohammed Adamu had given assurances about the safety of the city, following some abductions, the most notable of which was the kidnap of Aisha Umar Ardo, the daughter of a chieftain of the PDP who had to pay $15,000 in bitcoins to get his daughter released.

Owo poly sacks ASUP chairman, secretary

The management of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, on Tuesday, sacked Mr Oluwadare Ijawoye, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) in the institution and his Secretary, Mr Ade Arikawe, over alleged gross misconduct.

ASUP had accused principal officers of the school and the Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council, Mr Banji Alabi, of misappropriation of funds in the purchase of vehicles.

The sack was contained in a circular issued by the school’s management and made available in Akure by Mr Samuel Ojo, the school’s Director of Public Relations and Protocol.

The circular warned that the sacked staff should not be seen in the institution, adding that members of the public should not transact business with them under the auspices of the polytechnic.

It also reiterated the suspension of ASUP activities in the school.

“This is to certify that Mr Oluwadare Ijawoye and Mr Ade Arikawe have been dismissed from the service of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, for gross misconduct and barred from entering the polytechnic.

“The duo, therefore, cease to be chairman and secretary of the suspended ASUP.

“Anyone transacting business with them is doing so at his risk,” the circular said.

Osinbajo leaves Nigeria for Norway

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo will attend the Nordic-African Business Summit in Oslo this week on the invitation of the Norwegian Prime Minister, Erna Solberg.

The summit, according to a statement issued on Monday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President (Media and Publicity), Laolu Akande, is scheduled for between Monday and Wednesday.

He said the event was organised to boost trade and investment between Africa and the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

Akande said, “The summit will attract the largest Nordic companies doing business or interested in doing business in Nigeria with interests in agriculture, light manufacturing, transportation, digital technology and entertainment, oil and gas, and renewable energy.

“Specifically, Prof. Osinbajo will, among other critical issues, be speaking on the strides made by the Buhari administration in improving the economy and human capital development.

“The Vice-President will also headline a specific Nigeria-focused investment roundtable, which is expected to lead to increased trade and investment into Nigeria by building confidence about business prospects in the country and its role as an economic gateway into Africa.”

“Also, while in Oslo, the Vice-President would hold a bilateral meeting with the prime minister to discuss issues of mutual interest to both countries, including bilateral cooperation, especially trade and private sector investments as well as regional and multilateral issues of mutual concern, he added.

Kukah backs Sanusi over investment in education

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah has said  the Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II is fighting to keep the throne because of his unpopular opinions.

He said this on Monday at a panel session held as part of the activities for the 25th Nigerian Economic Summit.

The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, had created four new emirates in a bid to reduce Sanusi’s influence.

Kukah said, “The emir is here, he is still fighting for his life because of the position that he has taken and all of you sitting here know that it has literally become a matter to a particular course because the things he is saying are not popular.”

He called for more investments in education.

He said,  “The money that comes from the centre to our states, who is it meant for?

“When you say education is on the concurrent list, I worry that many of our states are providing opportunities for incubators of hatred to grow.

“If you take northern Nigeria where there is no single Christian or woman in the state assembly, women are lucky if they become commissioners for women’s affairs.”

Kukah said he understood the importance of education, adding that this was why he had so far established five secondary schools.

He said 60 per cent of the students in his schools are Muslims.

The cleric added, “I have five secondary schools and I have to rely on the little collection that I receive in my church to send children to school and in many of the schools, 60 per cent of the children are Muslims.

Court orders forfeiture of convicted ex-NIMASA ED’s hotel in Delta state

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday ordered the forfeiture of La Diva Hotel in Delta State belonging to a former Executive Director at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Calistus Obi.

The court had in May convicted Obi of N225m fraud.

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, who convicted Obi of the corruption charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, had sentenced him to seven years’ imprisonment with N42m fine option.

The judge had declined the prayer by the EFCC to impose on Obi the maximum sentence of 14 years’ imprisonment prescribed by Section 15(3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act.

The judge also turned down the request by the EFCC that Obi should be ordered to forfeit his La Diva Hotel, which he allegedly built with proceeds of fraud.

Following the setback in Justice Olatoregun’s court in June, the EFCC took a fresh ex parte application before Justice Saliu Saidu of the Federal High Court for the forfeiture of Obi’s hotel.

“La Diva Hotel was not acquired with legitimate income and as such ought to be forfeited to the Federal Government,” the EFCC told Justice Saidu on Monday.

The anti-graft agency also prayed the court to order the forfeiture of N37.5m belonging to Obi.

Justice Saidu granted the interim forfeiture order and adjourned till November 4 for further proceedings.

Obsessed boyfriend in 3 hours stand off with police as he threatens to slash girlfriend's throat

A beauty therapist has been praised by a judge after she helped jail her controlling ex-boyfriend who stabbed her five times.

Zahra Rechelle had broken off her 20-month on-off relationship with Aaron Booth, but he became obsessed with her.

The 31-year-old had been too frightened to him over his bullying behaviour and even stayed with him for fear social service would intervene, and take her and her young son from a previous relationship away.

But Booth followed her one evening, as she went out with friends, before breaking into her home at 1am after she went to bed.

He beat her as she was on the phone to police and told her he was going to "f***ing kill" her.

He then dragged her into the street by her hair and stabbed her in the stomach and legs in front of local police.

As she bled heavily from a series of wounds, the father of two put the knife against her throat as he was told to surrender.

Booth, from Glossop, Derbyshire, held her hostage briefly before a stand off with police lasting three hours.

Miss Rechelle was treated for her wounds and later agreed to give evidence against Booth fearing he would harm other women he came into contact with.

Booth was jailed for 14 years and will be on licence until the year 2039 following his release.

Shocking story of how former student repeatedly r-ped his teacher and held her and daughter for 53 days

A teacher who was abducted and repeatedly r-ped by an obsessed former student has told how she and her daughter miraculously survived the horrifying ordeal.

Mary Stauffer was 36 when she and her eight-year-old daughter Beth were kidnapped at gunpoint by her former algebra student Ming Sen Shiue.

Shiue murdered a six-year-old bystander and then held the mother and daughter for 53 days until they managed to escape his home and raise the alarm.

Almost 40 years on, their story has been turned into a new Lifetime film called Abducted: The Mary Stauffer Story, starring How I Met Your Mother and American Pie actress Alyson Hannigan.

The mother and daughter, who were locked inside a room, managed to escape when Mary removed hinge pins from a door and broke it open while Shiue was at work.

It was something she had seen her father do when she was younger.

Speaking before the Lifetime film airs on TV, Mary told Fox News: “I held the door with one hand and I pulled the hinge pin with the other. It came out just like it was greased … it was a miracle.

"Beth, she panicked right away. She said, ‘Mama, don’t do it. Mummy, you know what he said. If he finds us escaping, he’s going to kill us. Just wait for the police’.

“Then I did a nasty thing, perhaps in the eyes of an eight-year-old. I slapped her cheek because she … panicked. I thought, ‘I have to get some reality into her’."

Mary, a teacher and missionary, said she and Beth prayed daily and their faith kept them alive as they were help captive.

The mother and daughter were leaving a beauty salon in the US city of Roseville, Minnesota, when they were abducted in May 1980.

As they were forced into a car Mary didn't recognise her kidnapper, who had been one of her high school students 15 years earlier.

She didn't know why Shiue, then 29, was abducting them with a gun held at her daughter's side, but she initially thought it was a robbery.

Shiue, who was born in Taiwan and moved to the US aged eight, forced Mary to drive his car to a remote location, where he bound them and forced them into the boot.

He drove off but later pulled over to cover their mouths with duct tape after he heard them praying loudly.

When he stopped again two young boys noticed a commotion and one of them - six-year-old Jason Wilkman - peered inside the boot and saw the mother and daughter.

Shiue, an electronics shop owner who had spent years looking for Mary, grabbed Jason and tossed him into the boot and drove off with all three inside.

Mary attempted to console the terrified and sobbing young boy, who was pulled out of the car a short time later and bludgeoned to death with a metal rod.

His body was dumped in woodland, and Mary and Beth were taken to Shiue's home, where they were chained up and locked in a closet.

Mary was raped every day and Shiue recorded video of the attacks, some of which lasted hours.

After 53 days, they finally managed to flee the house and alert the police. Jason's remains were found.

Shiue was later convicted of abducting Mary and Beth, and raping Mary, and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

At a second trial, where he was convicted of murdering Jason, he smuggled a knife into the courtroom and slashed Mary's face as she testified against him.

Shiue was jailed for 40 years for murder, to be served concurrently with the earlier sentence.

A judge later ruled that he was still a threat to the public and should never be released on parole.

#FreeStevenKefas: Protesters storm Abuja over continuous detention of Journalist, faults El-Rufai

A coalition of human rights organisations on Monday took to the streets in Abuja to protest against the detention of a journalist and social media activist, Steven Kefas, who had been held for 139 days in Kaduna prison, despite a court order, for criticising Governor Nasir el-Rufai.

While demanding his immediate release and enforcement of his fundamental human rights, the protesters called on the National Judicial Council to investigate how a Nigerian citizen could be detained indefinitely in prison over a spurious allegation that attracts simpler bail conditions.

“The intolerance of the El-Rufai government towards Kefas’ relentless criticism reached its crescendo during the massacre of Adara natives and the decimation of their villages in the Kajuru Local Government of Kaduna State in March 2019,” they stated.

Kefas was said to have been arrested on May 8, 2019 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State by a combined team of policemen from Kaduna, initially detained in Minikoro Police Area Command, from where he was driven to Kaduna and detained by the Kaduna State Investigation Bureau.

The protesters, under the aegis of Citizens for Steven Kefas, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria and Coalition of Friends, carried placards with inscriptions such as ‘139 days in Kaduna prison as @ October 7 2019; Steven Kefas deserves bail,’ ‘Rise up for Steven Kefas’ bail’; ‘El-Rufai, stop the tyranny’ and ‘Steven Kefas has spent 139 days in Kaduna prison as @ October 7 2019 over social media posts.’

MASSOB vows to resist tollgates in South-East

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra has said it will not allow the Federal Government to set up tollgates in the South-East.

MASSOB leader, Uchenna Madu, stated this in a statement on Monday. He said, “We will not fold our hands and watch the Federal Government occupy Biafraland forcefully in the name of tollgates.

“Igboland and the entire Biafraland can never continue to be an experimental ground for  the exhibition of wickedness, malice, hatred, genocide, police extrajudicial killings, military terrorism, political subjugation and unprovoked massacre of innocent and harmless citizens.”

The group added, “MASSOB condemns and insists that there will be no tollgates in Biafraland as wickedly proposed by the Nigeria government.

“MASSOB observes that the South-East with only five states has more tollgates (56) than the entire 19 northern states with only 35.”

The group claimed the South-East had the highest number of dilapidated federal roads than other regions, saying tollgates were not needed in the area.

He added,  “The  North that claims to have the largest population will pay the lowest of the toll charges.”

Two teenagers were arrested after allegedly robbing the grave of an 84-year-old grandmother and having s.e.x with her corpse.

The youngsters, who cannot be identified, were caught after family of the deceased went to visit her grave the day after she was buried on September 29 in Davao, the Philippines.

Woman Who Slept With A Man For Loan, Claims The S*x Covers For N1million

A businesswoman identified as Ejioma, on Monday told an Ojo Magistrates' Court in Lagos how she paid back “in kind” part of N1.1 million loan she allegedly took from a man.

The defendant, a trader who sells bags of rice, pleaded not guilty to two counts of obtaining money by false pretence and stealing.

The woman, who spoke in pidgin English , told the court that the said loan was obtained after a friend introduced her to the businessman.

She said that although she was given the loan, she also delivered some bags of rice to the complainant with an understanding to pay up the balance.

Besides, the defendant informed the court that even before she was given the loan by the complainant, she had to pay him “in kind” on three different occasions in a hotel.

The Prosecutor, Mr Simon Uche, had earlier told the court that the woman obtained a loan of N 1.1 million for rice business from one Emma, a businessman, with a promise to pay back the money in six months.

The prosecutor said that the woman refused to pay up the loan and had been evasive since then. He said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mr A.A. Adesanya granted the woman N250,000 bail with two sureties in like sum. He adjourned the case until December 9 for trial.

Dangote's Control To End As BUA Moves To Crash Prices

The management of BUA Group has promised to crash prices of major food items it produces like sugar, flour, pastas and many others. Since 2016, when Nigeria slipped into recession, the purchasing power of Nigerians has remained low.

Though inflation has been on a steady decline, prices of food items have continued to rise and last month, the government closed borders to tackle smuggling of food items into the nation. This action has caused prices of foodstuff to skyrocket at the market and at the moment, the price of a 50kg bag of rice is N24,000 to N26,000. Before the border closure, it was selling for N14,000 to N16,000.

WHAT WOULD SUPPORT THE CRASHING OF PRICES?
General Manager of BUA Ports and Terminals, Mr Mohammed Lile, speaking ahead of the commissioning of the company’s foods manufacturing complex in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, this month, told CNBC Africa that efforts would be made to bring down prices of its products.

Mr Lile explained that the huge factory in Port Harcourt was built in line with the federal government of Nigeria’s policy on self sufficiency, stating that the location of the plant gave it a good advantage to bring down prices of products that would be produced in the complex.

He said the railway lines would reduce cost of transportation which would make it easy to access parts of the country, adding that the sea was also available for ships to berth with raw materials that would be processed at the complex. He then noted that use of gas would supplement the lack of power that faced production in the country.

Mr Lile, in the interview with CNBC Africa, noted that the $400 million project which started over 5 years ago comprises three factories: a sugar refinery; a flour (pasta) mill; and a power plant.

UNILAG #SexForGrades: Cold Room Where Lecturers & Female Students Meet For S*x

A lot of abuse have gone on in Nigerian universities, and the head of the institutions only pretend to be outraged when there is a video evidence. The unlucky lecturer caught on tape will become the sacrificial lamb. Others will continue but be a little bit more careful.

The University of Lagos has finally shut down the ‘Cold Room’, where lecturers allegedly s*xually harass students.

This was disclosed by Taiwo Oloyede, the Principal Assistant Registrar (Communication Unit) of the university.

The ‘Cold Room’ was mentioned by a lecturer of the school, Boniface Igbeneghu, who was caught on video s*xually harassing an undercover journalist who posed as an admission seeker.

Mr Igbeneghu, in the BBC undercover documentary, described the secret place where lecturers meet to “touch students breast” at the staff club of the university.

“They call the place cold room,” he said. He then explained that female students must pay to have good grades.

“The so called ‘Cold Room’ is a Functions Room that may have been abused because this is a deviation from the purpose for which it was created (meetings, seminars, events, etc)” the university spokesperson said.

Mr Oloyede also confirmed an earlier report that Mr Igbeneghu had been suspended.
