The Oyo State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a water tanker driver, Taofeek Oyeweso, who has gone into hiding after he allegedly crushed an engineer, Afees Tijani, while on the way to deliver water to a company in the state.
Punch Metro gathered that Tijani was riding his power bike to Ibadan when Oyeweso, who was driving against the traffic, rammed him less than a kilometre to the Sat Guru Maharajji camp end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
According to eyewitnesses, Oyeweso refused to wait after the crash, but while trying to escape, the tanker, with number plate BDJ 01 YC, ran into a ditch and got stuck.
Tijani’s friend, Jeremiah Osho, who witnessed the accident, said Oyeweso abandoned the tanker and absconded, adding that the unconscious engineer was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, where he was placed on life support machine.
Osho stated, “I was driving from Abeokuta to Ibadan but met Tijani at Saapade , he was riding his power bike to Ibadan when I saw him. So, we stopped at the bridge and greeted, and later embarked on our journeys. After about 15 minutes’ drive, I saw that the vehicle moving ahead of us suddenly swerved to the left when Tijani wanted to overtake it, so he swerved to the right, but in the process, one of the three water tankers driving against the traffic ran into him.
“I quickly reversed and got out of my car to rescue my friend but he was almost dead when I found him by the roadside. His left leg was shattered and he was having seizures, so, I removed his helmet and shirt and started fanning to sustain him. I called the Sector Commander, FRSC, and she sent a rescue team; a passer-by also helped in informing the police officers at the Ibadan tollgate.
“We traced the water tanker that hit him to a company it went to deliver water to, but when we got there, we were told that Oyeweso drove out immediately he delivered the water. We followed the direction he took and found the truck stuck in a ditch, but the driver was nowhere to be found.”
Tijani’s elder brother, Ishaq, said doctors had been battling to save the life of the father of three, adding that his left leg had been amputated.
When contacted, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Gbenga Fadeyi, said a manhunt had been launched for Oyeweso.
Fadeyi stated, “Concerted efforts are being made to arrest the driver, who has gone into hiding. But the owner of the tanker is working with the police to make sure that the driver is arrested.
“He drove against the traffic and the victim was knocked down; the police have been going to the UCH to check on the victim, whose leg was amputated due to the injury he sustained. We are still looking for Oyeweso and we will soon get him.”
The people of Itapaji Ekiti in the Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State, on Monday, rolled out the drums to celebrate the completion of the town’s civic centre, which construction commenced in 1968.
Led by their traditional ruler, the Olu of Itapaji, Oba Azeez Adebanjo, the people danced enthusiastically to mark the completion and inauguration of the project.
The spokesperson for the community, Chief Michael Ogundana, explained that the foundation stone of the project was laid in 1968 and had been stalled since then, adding that the community made representations to Governor Kayode Fayemi on the need to complete it.
Ogundana, who spoke during the inauguration of the civic centre as part of activities marking the first anniversary of the Fayemi administration, thanked the governor, whom he said “graciously approved funds through the Ekiti State Community and Social Development Agency for the completion of the project.”
The community leader urged the government to also construct the Itapaji-Omu Road and a police post to boost security in the area.
The Deputy Governor, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, who represented the governor, said, “Your spokesman had earlier said that this project started in 1968, more than 50 years ago, but Governor Fayemi provided the funds to complete it.
“That is what Governor Fayemi represents, development. The governor is passionate about development in all our communities and that is why we are inaugurating projects all over the state to mark our first anniversary in office.”
Egbeyemi said the government would look into the other demands of the community, adding, “Between November and December, road projects will commence in earnest, including rural roads, with the funds provided by the World Bank.
“Concerning the bridges destroyed by flood, they are receiving our attention and work will begin on them very soon. The governor needs your support, because he has the interest of Ekiti and its people at heart.”

A Fort Worth police officer who fatally shot Atatiana Jefferson, a black woman in her home Saturday morning has been arrested and charged with murder on Monday, police have said.
The officer, Aaron Dean, was arrested around 6 p.m and posted bail about 3 hours later, officials said.
He was being held on a $200,000 bond, according to the county's inmate information website.
"The family of Atatiana Jefferson is relieved that Aaron Dean has been arrested & charged with murder," Lee Merritt, an attorney for Jefferson's family, said in a statement.
"He did get what I wanted him to get, and this is only the start," Adarius Carr, Jefferson's brother, told CNN.
"There's no way this is enough. We know this is a good step in the direction where we want to go, but it's definitely not the end."
There will be "a long road to a prosecution, conviction and an appropriate sentence," Merritt said.
Police declined to say whether Dean was arrested by a Fort Worth officer or if he turned himself in.
The department's major case and internal affairs units were "working diligently to conclude the criminal administrative investigation" into the shooting, said Sgt. Chris Daniels.
Dean was served a written administrative complaint Sunday, placed on detached duty and stripped of his badge and firearm, interim Police Chief Ed Kraus said. He resigned Monday.

The Federal Government seems unperturbed by the widespread condemnation of the current border closure, as it has categorically stated that the exercise will remain until neighbouring countries respect the laws of Nigeria against food smuggling.
This is even as it ruled out hunger issues affecting Nigerians, claiming that Nigeria is food sufficient.
On August 20, 2019, Nigeria closed her borders in four geopolitical zones across the country: South-South, South-West, North-Central and North-West.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sabo Nanono, who spoke at a press briefing to mark the 2019 World Food Day, in Abuja, argued that it was laughable when Nigerians cry of hunger, because, according to him, they do not know what hunger is all about.
According to him, the problem of overweight or obesity could be attributed to the lack of exercise and not lack of the intake of a balanced diet.
“I think so long as these bordering countries do not respect our protocols on these very important issues of bringing food into Nigeria, border closure will remain.
“I think we are producing enough food to feed ourselves. There is no hunger in the country and when people talk about hunger I just laugh because they do not know hunger. They need to go to other countries to know what hunger is all about.
“If you say I miss my breakfast and I get lunch and dinner, then that is alright.”

See how people are reacting to her preaching...
Some of her members blasted her for preaching to them while others said they could not concentrate on her preaching because they were rather engrossed on her open cleavage. Distraction!
Fatima Daura, daughter of Mamman Daura, President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew, has accused the wife of the president of attacking her right inside the presidential villa in Abuja.
Commenting on a video where the first lady was seen complaining about being denied access to her apartment, Fatima said she least expected Buhari’s wife to act in a violent manner.
In the video which trended on Friday while the rumour mill was agog that the president was getting married to Sadiya Umaru Farouq, minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, the president’s wife was seen speaking in anger.
In a BBC Hausa interview monitored by TheCable, Fatima said she recorded the video as a proof that Buhari’s wife confronted her violently.
“My name is Fatima. I am a daughter to Malam Mamman Daura… if one reasons well, he or she will understand that it is not possible to say that the wife of the president is denied access to her apartment but let me give a context,” she said.
“The apartment in question is called the Glass House. You know that there are several houses and apartments in the villa. When the president got into office, he gave the Glass House to our father, Mamman Daura.
“You all know that they are friends and are related, more so, they grew up together like twins. When he became president, he gave the Glasshouse to our dad and said he should stay there. Our dad stayed there for three years now until when the president’s son, Yusuf, had an accident and went to Germany for treatment.
“When he returned, the president told our dad to move out of that apartment to an even bigger one in the villa, that Yusuf is going to stay and be treated in the Glass House. The Glass House is closer to the main presidential apartment and that will make easier access to him by his mother. It is not in her apartment which is in the main apartment.”
Fatima narrated what led to the incident that was captured in the video, saying she recorded it to use as evidence against the first lady.
“(On that day) My mom and dad were not around. So, my dad instructed me and my elder sister, both of us are working and we go to work every morning, that we should come on a Saturday and move our belongings to the new apartment the president instructed,” she said.
“We planned to park out then and have even concluded moving all the things. All of a sudden, in the afternoon as we were busy on that errand of packing our belongings when we heard noise from outside. I was in an inner room in the house while my sister was in an outer one close to the main gate of the apartment. So my sister went out before I could come out.
“On getting there, it was the wife of the president. When she came, the door was locked and she picked a metal chair and broke the door. I have sent the picture to you. My sister that went out was almost hit by the chair. She threw the chair which broke through the door and almost hit my sister.
“I was so shocked and afraid of getting there because she was shouting and reigning abuses words and saying we should move out of that apartment. That she has never seen this kind of thing before. I then went back and picked my phone because if one is to say that she acted that way, no one would believe it without a proof. She has already been saying a lot of things depicting that she is being suppressed.
“So I recorded it to show our parents and the security, so that they will know the truth should anything happen. Because the way she was raging and shouting, I was thinking that she would pick something and hit us with it or something like that. That was why we recorded it. Had it been we wanted to release the video, we would have done it earlier. But you know if a video clip enters one or two hands, you can’t control where it will get to.
“There are even other clips that have not been released, I will send them to you to see how she was insulting the security and how she drove them away saying who are they protecting and calling them bloody idiots. Its all on the video clip. That was what happened.”
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Muhammad Sabo Nanono on Monday said Nigeria is producing enough to feed itself, contrary to the narrative in some quarters that there is hunger in the land.
Nanono said this at a news conference in Abuja as part of the activities to mark the 2019 World Food Day being celebrated internationally on Oct. 16.
He said it was wrong to promote the idea that there was hunger in Nigeria, adding that there were only inconveniences being addressed by the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders like the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
According to the minister, the World Food Day is set aside to discuss food production.
“From what I am seeing in this conference room, there is no sign of hunger but obesity. Only a few people like me are either trying to balance their diet or is it fasting that is responsible for the way some of us look?
“The policy of the present government for us to feed ourselves is key. In the process value chains are being created to empower people and give out some jobs.
“I think we are producing enough now to feed ourselves and I think there is no hunger but if you say inconveniences I would agree.
“When people talk about hunger I laugh because they do not know hunger. If you go to other countries you will see what hunger is.
“Food in Nigeria is fairly cheap compared to other countries. In Kano for instance, you can eat N30 worth of food and be satisfied. So, we should be thankful that we can feed ourselves and we have relatively cheap food in this country,” he said.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 700th career goal on Monday, in a match in which Portugal lost 1-2 to Ukraine.
Ronaldo scored his landmark goal for club and country from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute.
The goal was Ronaldo’s 95th for Portugal.
The 34-year-old is now just 14 goals behind the all-time international record of 109 held by former Iran striker Ali Daei.
While the exact number of goals scored by some of the game’s legends is the subject of debate, Ronaldo is agreed to be the sixth player to reach 700 after Austrian Josef Bican, Brazilians Romario and Pele, Hungarian Ferenc Puskas and German Gerd Muller.
Ronaldo celebrated the landmark on his Instagram page, posting a video of the penalty blast and using the hashtag #CR700.
There have been many cases of gas cylinder explosions these days which leads to loss of lives and properties. Here are 22 danger signs you must watch out for when using a gas cylinder
Cooking gas cylinders must not exceed five years: most people using gas cylinders hardly remember when it was bought. It is important to keep track of the days and replace them as soon as possible.
Do not buy used Gas cylinders.
Watch out for the expiry dates: The steps to check the expiry date are very simple and basic. The expiry of LPG cylinder can be found on one of the metal strips that connect the body of the cylinder to top ring (handle). It is mentioned on the inner side of the strip. The strip has any of the alphabets from A to D painted on it along with a number. Decoding the expiry date is simple. The alphabet represents the month it expires while the number indicates the year. A year is divided into four quarters :
A – January to March
B – April to June
C – July to September
D – October to December
For example, your cylinder has ‘A 18 painted on the metal strip. The alphabet A represents month March and 18 indicates the year 2018.
· Use gas cylinders in a vertical position, unless specifically designed to be used otherwise
· Securely restrain cylinders to prevent them from falling over
· Always double check that the cylinder/gas is the right one for the intended use.
· Before connecting a gas cylinder to equipment or pipe-work make sure that the regulator and pipe-work are suitable for the type of gas and pressure being used.
· When required, wear suitable safety shoes and other personal protective equipment when handling gas cylinders.
· Do not use gas cylinders for any other purpose than the transport and storage of gas.
· Do not drop, roll or drag gas cylinders.
· Close the cylinder valve and replace dust caps, where provided when a gas cylinder is not in use.
· Where appropriate, fit cylinders with residual pressure valves (non-return valves) to reduce the risk of backflow of water or other materials into the cylinder during use that might corrode it (e.g. beer forced into an empty gas cylinder during cylinder change-over).
· Ensure the valve is protected by a valve cap or collar, or that the valve has been designed to withstand impact if the cylinder is dropped.
· Store gas cylinders in a dry, safe place on a flat surface in the open air. If this is not reasonably practicable, store in an adequately ventilated building or part of a building specifically reserved for this purpose.
· Cylinders containing flammable gas should not be stored in part of a building used for other purposes.
· Protect gas cylinders from external heat sources that may adversely affect their mechanical integrity.
· Gas cylinders should be stored away from sources of ignition and other flammable materials.
· Avoid storing gas cylinders so that they stand or lie in water.
· Ensure the valve is kept shut on empty cylinders to prevent contaminants from getting in.
· Store gas cylinders securely when they are not in use. They should be properly restrained unless designed to be free-standing.
· Gas cylinders must be clearly marked to show what they contain and the hazards associated with their contents.
· Store cylinders where they are not vulnerable to hazards caused by impact, e.g. from vehicles such as fork-lift trucks.
