Emmerdale actress Leah Bracknell dies of cancer

After a battle with lung cancer, Emmerdale actress Leah Bracknell has died at the age of 55, her manager has announced.

In a statement they said: "It is with the deepest sadness that Leah Bracknell's family confirm that Leah passed away in September, three years after her diagnosis with stage 4 lung cancer.

"They would like to thank all the public for their support and generosity which contributed to the extension and quality of her life over the past three years.

"Leah continued to embrace life and faced her illness with positivity. Many aspects of her journey can be found on her blog.

"Leah was best known and much loved as Zoe Tate in Emmerdale.

"She also had roles in Judge John Deed, A Touch of Frost, The Royal Today and DCI Banks to name just a few, as well as numerous appearances on stage and in pantomime.

"As well as acting, Leah was also an accomplished yoga teacher and shamanic healer.

"Leah had an energy and enthusiasm for life, a kind heart and much love to give to those around her.

"Her family have asked for privacy at this very sad time."

After announced her diagnosis in September 2016, Leah said: “I was feeling perfectly well, fit and healthy.

Teaching yoga classes and workshops, it was a time of new beginnings: preparing to move house, youngest child fleeing the nest, and excited to be starting rehearsals for a comedy play, being back onstage, going on tour.

“But, it turns out that the universe had other plans. Life was about to be unexpectedly turned on its head.

“I began to feel breathless climbing stairs ... I just put it down to a bit of stress.

"My abdomen suddenly ballooned - and within a matter of a few days I looked heavily pregnant.

"I could barely walk or breathe. Then, one Saturday night at the beginning of September I ended up in A&E.”

Her Emmerdale co-stars immediately rallied around her at the time of the diagnosis, with Dominic Brunt, who played Paddy Kirk, saying: “I visited my friend Leah. There is always hope.”

In August 2017 it was announced her targeted biological therapy had stopped working and that she had been surviving solely on expensive alternative treatments for several months.

Lagos to use other states for cultivation of rice

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday said the government is in the process of acquiring an estimated 32,000 hectares of farmland for rice cultivation in seven states.

Sanwo-Olu, who spoke in Lagos, on the occasion of this year’s Grand Finale of the World Food Day in Lagos, listed the states to include Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo and Kebbi as well as Lagos.

He noted that a key component in the food security programme of the state government is the 32-metric ton per hour capacity Integrated Rice Mill in Imota, which is expected to be completed and commissioned in the next seven months.

The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Folasade Jaji, noted that when completed, the mill would ensure sustainable supply of wholesome rice at an affordable price to the populace in Lagos and help to reduce rice importation into the Nigerian economy.

He noted that the theme for this year’s celebration with the theme: “Our Actions Our Future: Healthy Diets for a Zero Hunger World,” spoke to the need for a collective action towards not only increasing food production, but also ensuring that adequate attention was paid to the quality of food being consumed.

I will step on toes if that's what it takes to make Oyo great - Seyi Makinde

Oyo State Governor,  Seyi Makinde, on Wednesday said his administration will not shy away from taking hard decisions in order to set the state on a path of sustainable development.

Makinde, who also advised other state governors not to allow themselves to be caged by crave for second term, stated that service delivery to the people should be of greater importance to office holders.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, said that the governor stated these while performing two separate functions in his office.

Governor Makinde, while receiving reports of seven committees set up by his administration to look into various issues, said: “I have seen people come to me and said I should not do some certain things or take certain decisions because of second term. Those that are interested in second term should wait, at least till 2022. For now, we should do the job the people have committed to our hands and do things that will place Oyo State on the path of greatness.”

Also, while receiving the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State, Mr. Musa Wada, Makinde advised office-seekers and governors not to allow themselves to be caged by the crave for a second term in office.

“The people are the sole determinants of the fate of the politicians. Fresh term, second term are all linked to what we have for the people. During the first term, you make promises to the people and once you start ticking those boxes, the people can always decide that they want you to come in first and later say they want you to continue,” the governor said.

Photos: Mum transforms worn out leather sofa with N8,800 paint and it's totally new again

Leather sofas can begin to look quite sad after years of use as the cracks quite literally start to appear.

One mum's hack to breathe life back into hers has been hailed as 'genius' with others taking inspiration from her £20 (N8,800) hack.

A post on the Extreme Budget DIY & Life Hacks Facebook group reads: "So a couple of weeks ago I plucked up the courage to paint my sofa.

"So glad I did it, it’s like a new sofa for under £20. Hidden all scratches from my cat and feels amazing!"

She explains that she thoroughly cleaned the sofa with sugar soap beforehand, let it dry and then applied two thin coats of paint with a small roller and used brush for the awkward areas.

With lots of members of the group keen to try the same trick, the mum revealed the magic product was from Frenchic Furniture Paint's The Lazy Range , with a broad range of colours to choose from.

She said: "Highly recommend and so far so good after sitting on it, no cracks.

"The paint has a wax in it so no need to wax after applying the paint. So easy and looks new again!"

Buhari approves drones for border monitoring

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the deployment of drones, aircraft and geospatial technology for the monitoring of borders, it was learnt on Tuesday.

According to The Nation, a source said the strategy was part of the e-Customs that the nation will use for the surveillance of the movement of illicit goods and persons.

With the procurement and deployment of the e-Customs, the borders shall record a watertight security that will foreclose the need for the erection of physical walls.

The source said: “The President has just approved e-Customs. E-Customs encompasses the deployment of border management technology, which will incorporate the use of drones, aircraft and other geo-spatial technology to be able to monitor our borders to ensure that any illicit movement of goods and persons do not take place. Once that is in place, I think we will be very safe that we do not need walls to be erected.”

Chrisland supervisor accused of defiling child petitions NJC, says judge is bias

Chrisland School Supervisor, Adegboyega Adenekan, on trial for allegedly defiling a two-year and 11-month old pupil of the school, has petitioned the National Judicial Council (NJC) over his trial.

Adenekan has accused the trial judge, Justice Sybil Nwaka of an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domectic Violence Court, of bias.

During resumed proceedings on Tuesday, Justice Nwaka expressed displeasure about the delays allegedly caused by the defence in filing their final written address after the prosecution and defence had closed their cases.

Addressing the defence counsel, Mrs. M. Obi-Farinde, the trial judge recalled that the defence had filed a Motion on Notice dated October 14 requesting that she excuse herself from the case and that the defendant had filed a petition against her.

She noted that an exhibit, a copy of the petition to the NJC, written by the defendant in the case

“This is a 2017 case and we have gone through the rigors of trial and at the point of conclusion, you come up with a motion.

“I am adjourning till tomorrow and you will come to court to move your motion and adopt your final written address. If you are not here, the needful will be done,” the judge said.

Earlier during proceedings, the prosecutor, Mr Babajide Boye, informed the court that the defence had delayed filing of their court processes.

Boye noted that the defence filed their final written address on October 15, three months after the order of the court.

Justice Nwaka had ordered parties to file their final written address on July 14.

Boye said the delay on the part of the defence was a calculated attempt to “frustrate and abort” the case.

“We see it as an ambush and we have filed a fresh final written address and the defence also filed a Motion on Notice dated October 14 and we have filed a counter-affidavit in response.

“It is clear that the defence is trying to stall proceedings, we apply that the right of the defence to reply the final written address be foreclosed,” Boye said.

Obi-Farinde in her response, denied the allegations of the prosecution.

“It is not correct that the defendant just filed its final written address, it was dated September 19 and filed on September 20.

“The file was not in court because of the compilation of appeal, the counsel we sent missed the file,” she said.

Obi-Farinde noted that the defence needed time to respond to the prosecution’s fresh final written address which was dated October 15.

“They (the prosecution) have raised certain issues that we need to respond to.

“It was not our intent to hold back the court, it is in the interest of justice and fair hearing for us to respond to their final written address,” she said.

Justice Nwaka however disagreed with the defence counsel’s claim that the file of the case was not in court.

“As at September 19, the file was here in court, that is your lack of due diligence, the file was in this court,” she insisted.

The judge adjourned the case till October 16 for adoption of final written addresses by parties

APC kicks as Rivers Governor returns to school

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State has faulted the decision by the state Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade to return to school.

The State Chairman of APC, Mr. John Ochala while interacting with Journalists in Calabar on Tuesday said any serious-minded governor will not leave governance for school, alleging that “the state had been handed over to an unserious person who has continued to drag it backwards.

Ochalla maintained the APC had always warned that “the governor was never a serious person in the first place”.

“We are talking about dilapidated roads all over the state, look at our schools, our health infrastructure, our revenue generation capacity, and all other infrastructure. These are not enough to bother a governor. All that bothers him is to use public funds to go to school. Why didn’t he go to school when he was a Senator?”

Adding, “he is doing this to divert peoples’ attention from his failed administration. If I may ask; of what socio-political or economic value to Cross Riverians is his going to school? The schools he attended before now, how has he impacted the knowledge on Cross Riverians other than economic underdevelopment?”

The governor recently registered for his Master’s degree to study Law at the University of Calabar and the action has received knocks from a cross-section of the public, with many people recalling that Governor Ayade believed to be a professor only filled BSc as his qualification in the data form of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

“Look at the various white elephant projects he said he was carrying out without any tangible impact on the state. Let the governor tell us how much he has generated so far from all his so-called projects. Because he is actually idle doing nothing, he wants to go to school so that he will tell the students in that university that he is the governor of the state. Ayade likes showmanship.

“You will notice that he travels outside the state too often. A man who has challenges in the state, including communal clashes here and there, will not travel like that and that is to show you that he has been idle. Now he wants to be busy, not with governance, but driving siren to school to be cheered by students,” the party said.

Sanwo Olu hosts NLC, TUC, says I will pay above N30,000 minimum wage

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has assured that the state was ready to pay the N30,000 minimum wage, reinterating his promise to pay above N30,000 to Lagos workers because of the special status of the state.

This assurance is coming just as he sued for continued harmonious and peaceful relationship between government and Labour Unions in the state.

Sanwo-Olu spoke when he hosted members of Lagos State Public Service Joint Negotiating Council, JNC, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC at the Lagos House, Ikeja, yesterday.

He also charged the Labour leaders to key into government’s agenda on the environment, as well as partner government in sensitizing members on need to have positive attitude on environmental issues.

Chairman, Lagos State Public Service Joint Negotiating Council, Razaq Falade commended Sanwo-Olu for making the welfare of workers a priority.

Falade called for prompt implementation of the minimum wage to reduce poverty among workers, saying that in two weeks time, the proposed consequential adjustments on the wage issue would be forwarded by the NJC to the Governor.

Nigerian Medical Association cries out over kidnap of doctors... lack of care

Forty-eight Nigerian doctors have been abducted by hoodlums in the last two years, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has said.

This is an average of two doctors per month.

NMA President Dr Adedayo Faduyile stated this yesterday in Akure, the Ondo State capital, while addressing reporters on activities to mark the beginning of the 2019 Physicians’ Week.

The NMA president said the theme for this year’s anniversary is: Care of the Unknown Patients: An Overview.

He said the theme was apt in addressing what he called the lacuna in caring for this category of patients, especially with regard to police connection with medical practice.

Faduyile stressed that despite the challenges doctors faced, they still provided necessary care for various categories of patients.

He said: “However, in the last one year, Nigerian doctors have had significant input in the improvement of the health of the nation.

“It is worthy of note that all have not been well with Nigerian doctors. The kidnapping of our members in the course of discharging their duties to the Nigerian state with some still in captivity as well as incessant harassment/assault by patients and their relations.

“The unfortunate maltreatment by employers (government), ranging from general working environment and emoluments to the irregular payment of salaries with arrears running to 12 months or more in some states.”

The NMA president enthused that despite various challenges, Nigerian physicians continued to render desirable healthcare services.

He accused the government of not giving the desired attention to “the unknown patients”.

According to him, there is lack of commitment to the implementation of the National Health Act (NHA) Act (enacted in 2014), which caters for patients in emergency situations.

“Another good example is the care of victims of gunshot injuries. With broad provisions in the NHA 2014, there is no policy statement that clearly addresses the various components of the emergency care services for this set of patients,” Faduyile said.

He called for the formulation of enduring policy for the care of “the unknown patients” and Nigerian physicians amidst various challenges.

Lagos speaker threatens Ambode with arrest if he fails to appear before probe committee again

Immediate past governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on Tuesday failed again to appear before the State House of Assembly Ad-hoc Committee probing the activities of the last administration, especially the purchase of the 820 buses for its mass transit programme.

The 16-man committee is chaired by Hon. Fatai Mojeed.

Also absent was the immediate past commissioner for finance, Mr. Akinyemi Ashade, and his special duties counterpart, Oladejo Seye.

They both wrote the committee to be excused because they were not in the country.

The next option, according to the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, when the matter came up at the plenary yesterday, is to invite Ambode publicly through newspaper publications.

He, however, said if the former governor still failed to appear, then the House would be left with no other option than to compel him to do so by issuing a warrant of arrest on him.

A former commissioner for economic planning and budget, Mr. Olusegun Banjo, revealed that the purchase of the 820 buses by Ambode “was not routed through my ministry.”

Banjo, who stated that he became commissioner in February 2018, said he did follow the system he met on ground, which, according to him, was responsible for shady transactions on the buses that were procured.

When the Accountant-General of the State, Mrs. Shukrat Umar, was asked if the budget for the purchase of the buses was approved by the State Executive Council, she said: “The State Treasury Office acted on Exco’s approval. The buses were in line with Exco’s approval. I would not know whether the Paris Refund Club was discussed or not.”
