Jury recommends death sentence for ‘Hollywood Ripper’

A jury in California recommended the death sentence on Friday for a man dubbed the “Hollywood Ripper” who was earlier found guilty in the gruesome killings of two women at their homes.

Michael Gargiulo, 43, was convicted in August on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder by a Los Angeles jury.

A judge is set to sentence Gargiulo, also described as the “boy next door killer,” on February 28.

Among his victims was 22-year-old Ashley Ellerin, who was found in her Hollywood home with 47 stab wounds in February 2001. On the night of her murder, Ellerin had been due to go on a date with actor Ashton Kutcher, who testified at the trial.

The second murder victim was Maria Bruno, a 32-year-old mother of four and neighbor of Gargiulo who was attacked in her sleep in December 2005 and “quite literally butchered,” prosecutors said.A jury in California recommended the death sentence on Friday for a man dubbed the “Hollywood Ripper” who was earlier found guilty in the gruesome killings of two women at their homes.

Removal of Kogi Deputy Governor illegal – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the impeachment of the Deputy Governor of Kogi, Mr Simon Achuba is illegal.

The party stated this in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan on Saturday in Abuja.

Achuba was on Friday impeached by the Kogi House of Assembly on the recommendations of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry that investigated allegations of gross misconduct leveled against him.

Ologbondiyan said that removing Achuba via unconstitutional method and in total disregard to the verdict of the judicial panel was, in itself, a gross misconduct and grave Constitutional violation.

“The PDP however alerts that the next victim of such underhand methods would be the state assembly itself since there was no way the governor would win the Nov. 16 election.”

Ologbondiyan said that the action of the Assembly, had further reduced Kogi to a “butt of jokes” among compatriots in other states of the federation.

“Nigeria is a nation governed by laws and no body, no matter the desperation, should be allowed to turn it, or any part thereof, to a Banana Republic,” the PDP scribe said.

Pilot banned for life after allowing Egyptian actor to sit in cockpit

Egypt has banned a pilot for life for allowing celebrity and actor Mohamed Ramadan to sit in the cockpit during a private flight to Saudi Arabia.

The actor and singer posted a video of himself in the co-pilot's seat, holding the controls, as someone else commented he's "driving the plane now".

The co-pilot was also reportedly banned for a year over the incident.

The flight was run by Smart Aviation, whose chief executive resigned his post, officials said.

"After confirming the violations against the Egyptian civil aviation law, we have taken deterrent measures towards the reckless and irresponsible actions [of the pilot]," Egypt's civil aviation ministry said in a statement, reported by Masrawy news.

Aviation safety for Egyptian airliners was paramount, the ministry added.

Mohamed Ramadan, who has more than seven million subscribers on his YouTube channel, posted the video on 13 October to his Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Speaking to camera, he says: "In a first of its kind, I will go drive the plane."

The clip cuts to him entering the cockpit, where he sits next to the pilot with his hands on the control wheel.

An unidentified man off camera then says: "I swear to God, Mohamed Ramadan is the one driving the plane now."

Egyptian aviation rules stipulate that passengers are not allowed to enter the cockpit while a flight is in operation.

Some on social media responded angrily to the video, with calls for the actor to be boycotted.

If not for the law, I would have shot my father - Actor Yaw Dabo recounts ordeal

Popular Kumawood actor, Samuel Dabo, has revealed how his mother single-handedly raised him and two other siblings after his father abandoned them.

According to Yaw Dabo, as he is popularly known in the Ghanaian entertainment industry, his father abandoned the family after he had challenges with his job.

But, after many years his father came back to apologise and to seek his support.

In response, he said he would have shot his father dead if he could take the law into his own hands at the time.

“I am the first child of three children and it has taken the grace of God for us all to be successful after our father left us. I am able to provide for my mum despite how tough the movie industry has become and built a three-bedroom house for her,” he said.

Narrating his experience on Nhyira FM’s Obra Show, Yaw Dabo disclosed his father is now back seeking forgiveness.

“My mum recently called me seeking forgiveness and support for my father after he confessed his admiration of my hard work and talent in the movie industry. But, I asked myself, would he have looked for me or my siblings if he hadn’t seen me on TV?” he narrated.

Farmers have s.e.x more often than other professionals – Study

A new study shows farmers have s.e.x more often than other professionals — as a third of those surveyed boast about having s.e.x at least once a day.

It’s not just the cows and chickens that are breeding down on the farm.

According to the New York Post, what’s more, a staggering 67 per cent of them rated their performance in the bedroom as “incredible,” according to the study by s.e.x toy manufacturer, Lelo.

A s.e.x expert, Kate Moyle, said it was because farmers were more likely to be fitter than desk-bound city dwellers, and therefore have more stamina.

“Even within groups such as professions where there is a lot of similarities, we have to consider that there is a huge amount of individual differences impacting people’s sexuality and s.e.x lives,” Ms Moyle told the UK Mirror.

“However, what we may expect are some trends, for example, the level of physical activity in a career such as a farmer, rather than someone in an office setting may impact levels of fitness and energy,” she said.

The report said farmers were closely followed by architects, with 21 per cent of them claiming to have s.e.x once a day, and hairdressers, with 17 per cent saying they also made whoopie daily.

The researcher, Lelo, asked 2,000 men and women in the UK about their sex lives as well as their occupation for the survey.

While farmers are making hay while the sun shines, it appears journalists are the least likely to get it on.

They were at the end of the scale — with one-fifth claiming they only had s.e.x once a month.
Lawyers also experience problems in the bedroom — 27 per cent of them admit to faking an orgasm every time they have s.e.x.

“The lifestyle factors of our jobs such as flexibility of working hours and the environment are also likely to have an impact on all our lives not just our s.e.x lives,” Ms Moyle said.

Navy arrests 7 impostors escorting oil vessel

The Nigerian Navy on Friday said it arrested seven alleged impostors parading themselves as security personnel in Port Harcourt.

Cdr. Murtala Rogo, Base Operations Officer, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder, Port Harcourt, said this when handing over the suspects to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Onne, Rivers.

Rogo said the suspects, who were onboard a ‘rogue vessel’, MV Workhorse, were intercepted while escorting an oil tanker, MV Osamewe to an undisclosed location without a permit.

“In line with the Nigerian Navy policing role on the maritime domain, on Sept. 6, we got tip-off of a vessel carrying out illegal escort duty for an oil tanker.

“Based on this intelligence, we deployed NNS Pathfinder patrol gunboats to Bonny Anchorage to make the arrest. On reaching there, our patrol elements arrested seven crew members onboard MV Workhorse for providing illegal armed escort to an oil tanker, MV Osamewe.

“The suspects could not provide the appropriate permit to operate as a private maritime logistic support security vessel at the time of arrest,” he said.

Salary increases for police, military, DSS

Nigeria’s securitymen in the police, armed forces and the Department of State Services(DSS) and National Intelligence Agency, will also benefit from the upward review of salaries for Federal government workers, Minister of state for Labour and Employment hinted on Friday.

Festus Keyamo in a tweet announcing the breakthrough in talks with labour leaders over the consequential salary adjustment for other cadres of government workers, following the implementation of the N30,000 miniumum wage, said: “Those of the law-enforcement agencies have also been done, but are not captured in this Memorandum”.

Dr. Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour elaborated at a news conference on Friday that because the security personnel are not members of the civil service, their adjustments would be communicated to them through the appropriate channels.

Dead man appointed to serve in Kenya’s film body

A man who died a year ago was mistakenly reappointed to serve on the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), the government says.

Robert Kochalle died in May last year but was among three people reappointed to the KFCB, which regulates cinema and broadcast content.

On social media, Kenyans have been hitting out at the government saying the appointment is evidence of clumsiness in managing state affairs.

But the board’s chief executive, Ezekiel Mutua, says that it was a “small issue being blown out of proportion”.

He suggested that the mistake may have been caused by an administrative mix up following the transfer of the KFCB from one government ministry to another.

Some Kenyans online are however not content with Mr Mutua's explanation:

Some even wonder whether the man was asked for consent before his re-appointment

KENYAN LIKE NIGERIAN, LOL

State of emergency in Chile after protests sparked by increased metro ticket prices turned violent

A state of emergency has been declared in the Chilean capital, Santiago, after protests sparked by increased metro ticket prices turned violent.

Protesters - many of them high school and university students - jumped turnstiles, attacked several underground stations, started fires and blocked traffic, leaving widespread damage across the city and thousands of commuters without transport.

Television pictures showed protesters throwing stones, attacking police vehicles and burning at least one bus. Anti-riot police used tear gas and batons against some protesters, who have been demonstrating for days against the increase.

The unrest exposes divisions in the country, one of Latin America's wealthiest but also one of its most unequal. There have been growing complaints about the cost of living - especially in Santiago, a city of some six million people - and calls for economic reforms.

Speaking on television, President Sebastián Piñera said the aim of the state of emergency was to "ensure public order and the safety of public and private property". The measure allows authorities to restrict people's freedom of movement and their right to assembly.

He also said the government would "call for a dialogue... to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the increase in fares".

Did you know Mexican police were unable to arrest El Chapo's son? His boys rained fire on them

Heavy fighting broke out in northern Mexico on Thursday after security forces detained a son of the jailed drug kingpin Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.

Fighting raged for hours after Ovidio Guzmán López was found in what authorities said was a routine patrol in the city of Culiacán.

Armed men were seen firing on police with bodies strewn in the road.

Police withdrew without Mr Guzmán in their custody to avoid further violence, officials said.

Mexico's security minister, Alfonso Durazo, told Reuters news agency that a patrol of National Guard militarised police came under intense fire from outside the house where they had located Mr Guzmán, forcing them to retreat from the building for their own safety and "to recover calm in the city".

A lawyer for the Guzmán family told the Associated Press, "Ovidio is alive and free."

Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he would hold a meeting of his security cabinet to discuss the incident.

Unemployment Now A Serious Problem In Nigeria

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) says Nigeria’s unemployment rate has been increasing since President Muhammadu Buhari came to power in 2015.

The group said this in a report that reviewed the economic agenda of the Buhari administration.

The report titled: “An assessment of the effectiveness of government policies and programmes on economic growth and development, 2016-2019”, examined the effectiveness of policies and programmes that have been implemented by Buhari.

CDD said some government actions and policies have generated employment, “but at a slower rate than the increase in the workforce,” adding that “unemployment has, therefore, been increasing.”

“Though youth and graduate employment have recently diminished slightly, they are still unacceptably high,” the report read.

It said the various employment generation schemes introduced by the federal government have to be considerably up-scaled” for them to have a significant impact.

“More importantly, Commercial banks have to be incentivised to substantially increase their lending to the private sector, particularly agricultural production and processing and MSMEs,” it said.

ECONOMIC GROWTH BELOW EXPECTATIONS, POWER SECTOR FACING CHALLENGES

CDD also said though Nigeria’s economic growth has been “turning positive,” it has been “lower than stated targets.”

“This is partly due to slow or uneven growth of critical sectors such as crude oil, agriculture, manufacturing and power,” it said.

It urged renewed efforts to expand the tax base, “partly through more vigorous enforcement and partly through the incorporation of MSMEs and the informal sector into the tax net.”

The group said while the government’s economic recovery and growth plan provided the context for the government’s economic development policies and programmes, its targets have been overtaken by developments.

“Most of the macro-economic targets in the Plan and the budgets have been under-achieved,” the group said, adding: “The greatest challenge that has inhibited the achievement of the goals is the revenue constraint.

On the power sector, the group said the privatisation of that sector has led to an institutional arrangement faced with the challenges of preventing delivery on the speed and scale Nigeria needs to push needed development.

“In the short term, the distribution companies must be incentivised to consolidate, using an obligatory minimum capital requirement, as was done with the banking sector earlier,” it said.

“Only in this way can they develop the capital investments needed to buy adequate power from the expanding capacity of the GENCOs and TCN and distribute and efficiently collect sales revenues.”
