Update On UNILAG Student Who "Turned Into A Mermaid"

Students of the University of Lagos were left in a state of shock last night after it was alleged that a student turned to a mermaid in Fagunwa hall.

According to multiple sources, the girl identified as Olumide, was rumoured to have turned to a mermaid after a fight with her friend.

The young girl later confessed that she is possessed with marine spirit.

Many students of UNILAG came out with cameras and declared her a mermaid and treated her like an outcast, while some did the wise thing by inviting security.

An anonymous source who also claimed the young girl is a mermaid said water was poured on her head and her hair turned green.

The able bodied alpha base security stormed the said hostel and took her away.

Nigeria’s Politics Is A Club For Old Men - US Diplomat

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, a United States diplomat, has likened Nigeria’s political circle to an old men’s club. The female diplomat, who was the assistant secretary of State for African Affairs between 2013 and 2017, made this known on Tuesday while speaking at ’20 Years of Democracy: a Retrospect’, a programme organised by National Endowment for Democracy (NED) in partnership with Ford Foundation and YIAGA Africa.

She predicted that the 2023 election will be challenging because of a gentleman’s agreement.

“Nigeria’s politics is an old men’s club. There is also a gentleman’s agreement to rotate power between the north and the south,” she said.
“The next election will be a challenging one because of a gentleman’s agreement to rotate power”.

Speaking on the challenges of Nigeria’s democracy in the past 20 years, the diplomat said Nigerian elections have a huge potential for violence.

“Nigeria made a huge step backwards to violence in 2019,” she said.

“I read that 30 people lost their lives to electoral violence but I think it would be higher than that.”

According to Thomas-Greenfield, elections are expensive in Nigeria because there is no framework for candidates to receive donations from electorates.

Although Nigeria was given credit for having the financial ability and institutional infrastructure to hold elections, Thomas-Greenfield said the government occasionally “uses its ability to pay to influence how the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) performs”.

Newlyweds left with horrific injuries after standing up to boy who returned with gang

A woman says she thought her new husband was dead after seeing him lying on the floor when they were attacked by a gang of around 12 people.

Teresa Mciver jumped in to help when her Neil was set upon by the gang. She ended up with horrific head injuries, broken ribs and a punctured lung while he suffered a gaping head wound following the attack with bats, machetes and an axe.

Dementia care worker Teresa, 50, still has flashbacks following the attack in Grimsby.

She said: ‘At one point Neil was hit over the head and knocked to the floor and I thought he was dead. It was just carnage.

‘I think one of the neighbours must have called the emergency services and we were both rushed to hospital. It is believed the couple were set upon by a gang after they had been confronted by a youth earlier in the evening who had then driven off.

Neil needed 32 stitches to his head and plastic surgery on his hand after the attack on May 14. Teresa was discharged but later rushed back to hospital after it was discovered that her lung had collapsed.

Teresa said: ‘My son and daughter were devastated. My mother also collapsed on the shoulder of my daughter and sobbed when she found out. ‘My mum is 75 and has beat breast cancer and she completely broke down over what happened.

‘It’s not been easy at all, I have nightmares and I wake up fighting and throwing punches.

‘We are both struggling to sleep and are watching the cameras all night waiting to see if someone knocks on the door. I don’t know where we would be if we didn’t have each other.

‘Neil has been left feeling so guilty as he said that he should have protected me, but I wasn’t going to step back and watch.

‘The whole thing has been horrific these past few months, we can’t wait to have some answers.’

He said: ‘My mum and her partner were round at a friend’s house on the Grange when they were confronted by this lad who started having a go at them. He quickly drove away after they stood up to him and they thought nothing more of it.

‘Then as they were leaving the house, they were jumped from behind by this group with bats, machetes and even an axe.’ Humberside Police have arrested three people in connection with the incident.

A 27-year-old man is due to appear in crown court on Monday October 28 charged with a public order offence. The other two people arrested have been released while police carry out further investigations.

Blac Chyna didn't take a meeting with the Kardashian's lawyer seriously- claims

Blac Chyna was late, uncooperative and unprofessional during a recent deposition in her suit with the Kardashian family, according to the reality TV family's legal team.

The 31-year-old's conduct in the September 24 was at the center of numerous complaints raised by lawyers in new docs in the case, TMZ reported, as they said she didn't cooperate with their questioning, and had to be coached by her own legal team in her responses.

Chyna, whose real name is Angela Renée White, arrived to the planned seven-hour deposition more than and hour and a half late, lawyers said in the docs.

The Washington D.C. native irritated Kardashian attorneys by using her lawyer's office as a backdrop for a photo shoot 'during the lunch break,' which ate into more time in the critical meeting.

Kardashian attorneys said the reality star, who's featured on Zeus's The Real Blac Chyna, had even planned for the time-consuming shoot to happen the day of the deposition, as she brought a wardrobe suitcase to her lawyer's office.

The results of the aforementioned shoot were posted to Instagram October 5 in a trio of shots depicting the mom-of-two - to son King Cairo, seven, with rapper Tyga, and and daughter Dream Renée, two, with Rob Kardashian - in black leather dress as she posed in a high-rise office.

'Stepped in the office to handle some business,' she wrote in the captions on one post, writing on another, 'Miss Independent @fashionnova.'

In her suit, the salon owner claimed that the Kardashian family had threatened to pull Keeping Up With The Kardashians off of the E! network if they didn't end her spin-off show Rob & Chyna, which aired for one season in the fall of 2016.

'The entire family will come after you if you leave, using their fame, wealth and power to take you down, including getting your television show cancelled (despite great ratings),' and 'spreading lies about you,' she said in the suit she filed last year, according to TMZ.

We await more updates.

Big Boy Kola Aluko Loses $73m and N350m Properties Over Multi-million Fraud

The Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the forfeiture of three landed properties belonging to Kola Aluko, an ally of a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission gave the value of the landed properties located in Abuja and Lagos as $73m and N350m.

The EFCC gave the names of the properties as
Plot 3389 and Plot 3390, House 2, Margaret Thatcher Close, Asokoro Cadastral Zone, Abuja; as well as Avenue Towers, Plot 1391 Tiamiyu Savage Street, Victoria Island, Lagos
the properties were reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities.

Following an ex parte application on Tuesday, Justice Mohammed Liman ordered the properties temporarily forfeited to the Federal Government.

EFCC lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, had told the judge that Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14 2016 empowered the court to make such a forfeiture order
The properties sought to be attached are reasonably suspected to be proceeds of an unlawful diversion from the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“That the respondent’s known and provable lawful income is far less than the properties sought to be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria,” the lawyer said in the application.
An operative of the EFCC, Sambo Mayana, said the anti-graft agency investigated Aluko after receiving from Mr Debo Adeniran, the Executive Chairman of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, “a damning intelligence report and a petition alleging fraud, lack of transparency and unethical conduct in the transfer of production rights in the oil mining leases against the respondent and his cronies.

That there are suspicious financial transactions involving the 1st respondent, KAA and Atlantic Energy Holding Limited based in the British Virgin Island.

That the company, in the course of three years, received large suspicious transfers from two sister companies, namely: Atlantic Energy Drilling Concept Limited and Atlantic Energy Brass Development Limited, based in Nigeria.”

After granting the forfeiture order, the judge directed the EFCC to publish it in a national newspaper.
He adjourned till November 12, 2019, for anyone interested in the properties to appear before him to show cause why they should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.

Drama in court as couple fights over house keys

There was a mild drama at the Customary Court, Agege, Lagos on Tuesday after a wife refused to release the house keys to her husband on the order of the court.

The husband, Otunba Fatunwase Aderemi, who is the petitioner, is begging the court to dissolve his marriage to Esther Aderemi and grant his request to take custody of his 6-year-old daughter.

The husband, at the last hearing also begged the court to order his wife to allow him access to the house since he paid the rent.

The court denied the petitioner’s request to take the child into his custody as the child was still very young and ordered the respondent to release the house keys to the husband pending the outcome of the matter.

At today’s hearing, the husband told the court that his wife flouted all orders given to them and had continued to make more trouble with him.

In her response, Esther, a resident of 4 Nova road, Folayo Bus stop, Iyana Orile-Agege said she changed her mind to give her husband access to the house because she did not trust him anymore and that he could plant something in the house behind her.

Esther also said she once paid the house rent when they were living together.

In her words: “I can’t give him the key and I can’t leave his house. He once lived with me for nine years in the house I paid for.

“What if I give him key and he went to drop a dead body in the house and implicate me? It’s true I pledged to give him the key at the last hearing but I can’t do that. Besides, he has told me in January to tell my children to be paying for the house rent henceforth.”

The court’s President, Mrs. Patricia Adeyanju, who was not happy with the new development ordered the defendant to produce the key before the court or face arrest.

“Are you telling the court we are foolish? You have just made a fool of yourself, this is a court order that is beyond anybody. You agreed with us at the last hearing and now you are saying another thing,” Adeyanju said.

“If there is somebody to send to and bring the key, send them now because you’re not leaving this court today,” Adeyanju ordered.

After submitting the key to the court, Adeyanju warned the petitioner that nothing must happen to the respondent.

In his response, the petitioner said he has given the court enough time to make the decision on their matter but that it was high he started taking actions since the respondent had continued to flout the court’s orders.

“My lords, as you can see her behaviour in court, then you can imagine what I face at home with her. I refused to live in that house not because I feared her but because the court has told us to make peace. She won’t make peace with me.

“After I get my keys, I’m going to start living in that house and I am going to bring another woman in there because she cannot cook for me and I am too old to go to the kitchen, so someone must cook for me,” he said.

The courtroom became rowdy as the woman threatened to cause mayhem in the house if the petitioner brought in another woman.

The court’s President, however, told the petitioner not to bring in another woman into the house but that he could negotiate the time the respondent would move out.

She said, “You can’t bring more confusion into this matter. You can’t bring in another wife into that house, what you can do is to negotiate the time you are going to give her before she moves out. Also, If you’re divorcing your wife, you have to provide accommodation for her pending the outcome of the case.

In her ruling, the court’s President ordered the petitioner not to bring in another woman into the house and also mandated him to provide accommodation for the respondent and her daughter when the time comes.

Staring at women’s breasts makes men live longer - Study

A study done by a German scientist, Karen Weatherby, and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, has revealed that staring at women’s breasts is healthy and also elongates the life span of men.

The study, which was carried out over a period of five years, involved 500 men, half of whom were instructed to stare at women’s breasts in a lustful manner for no less than 10 minutes every day.

The other half were instructed to abstain from doing such.

It concluded that men who stared at breasts, more often, showed lower rates of heart problems, slower resting heart rate and lower blood pressure, all of which enable a healthy living and long life.

The study said men should stare at breasts for 10 minutes a day to improve the wellness of their hearts and live longer.

“Just 10 minutes of staring at the charms of a well-endowed female every day is roughly equivalent to a 30-minute aerobics work-out,” the study revealed.

When the two groups of men were tested, men that stared at breasts daily had lower blood pressure, slower resting pulse rates, as well as fewer instances of coronary artery disease.

“Sexual excitement gets the heart pumping and improves blood circulation. Gazing at breasts makes men healthier and engaging in this activity a few minutes daily cuts the risk of stroke and heart attack by half.

“We believe that by doing so consistently, the average man can extend his life for four to five years,’’ he added.

Devastated groom breaks silence after 50 guests struck by food poisoning at his wedding

A groom has told for the first time of his heartbreak after 58 guests suffered food poisoning from an undercooked hog roast at his wedding reception.

Phil Kemp, 37, conceded the illnesses marred what should have been "the happiest day of mine and [wife] Vikki's lives".

Galloping Gourmet, which provided the catering at Packington Moor in rural Warwickshire, was last week ordered to pay more than £250,000 for causing great "distress and discomfort".

Mr Kemp was so unwell he and Vikki were unable to go on their honeymoon in the Dominican Republic.

"We did go away eventually, but this was obviously an extra cost on top of everything we had already paid. It was heartbreaking," the IT operations technician said.

"I was totally devastated and we never got any money back from the tour operator or insurer in relation to it.

"It got to the point where I had to go to a local walk-in centre and after tests I was told I had salmonella – I just couldn’t believe it.

"My illness lasted around 10 days all in all, but the symptoms were so bad that we had no option but to cancel our honeymoon to the Dominican Republic."

The wedding photographer and three members of staff at Packington Moor also fell ill in October 2017.

Cannock Magistrates Court heard the national salmonella reference laboratory was able to isolate genetically identical bacteria from 20 samples provided by some of the victims of the food poisoning, proving they were linked to eating food from a point of source.

Mr Kemp, who lives in Burntwood, Staffordshire, added: "News of the prosecution is very welcome and I hope that it is an outcome that caterers across the country pay attention to and learn from.

"No one should have to go through what we have, especially in relation to their wedding day – it is just not acceptable.

"Sadly a lot of the memories about what should have been the happiest day of mine and Vikki’s lives are spoilt by what happened.

"Nothing will change what has happened, but we now just hope these issues will never happen again."

Justin Trudeau wins second term in Canada elections

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau won a second term in Canada's national elections Monday, losing the majority but delivering unexpectedly strong results despite having been weakened by a series of scandals that tarnished his image as a liberal icon.

Mr Trudeau's Liberal party took the most seats in Parliament, giving it the best chance to form a government. However, falling short of a majority meant the Liberals would have to rely on an opposition party to pass legislation.

"It's not quite the same as 2015. It's not all owing to the leader," said Robert Bothwell, a professor of Canadian history and international relations at the University of Toronto.

"Mr Trudeau is prime minister because the rest of the party was able to pull itself together and prevail. While Trudeau certainly deserves credit for what has happened he's really going to have to demonstrate qualities that he hasn't yet shown."

Still, the results were a victory for Mr Trudeau, whose clean-cut image took a hit after old photos of him in blackface and brownface surfaced last month.

Extend border closure to herdsmen, Ortom tells FG

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom on Monday called on  the  Federal Government to close  the  land borders to prevent the influx of foreign herdsmen into the country.

The FG  has  since closed  the country’s borders to all movement of goods  as part of an effort to  stop  smuggling, and Ortom  says foreign herdsmen should also be stopped at the borders.

The governor  made the call  in Makurdi during a visit to  the General Hospital in Apir to see Mrs Grace Zeku, whose arm was cut off  by suspected herdsmen on her farm in Gboogyo village, Guma Local Government Area of the state recently.

He lamented that  herdsmen from  Mali, Niger and Chad  had been coming into Nigeria to commit atrocities.

The governor said, “No country can accept this, how can people come from other countries to  commit atrocities. They should be checked.

“The Federal Government should ensure that our borders are also closed to prevent those herdsmen who come from neighbouring countries, many of them are from Niger and Mali.”

Ortom said the state government was making efforts through the State Security Council to beef up
security in the state to prevent any further violent attacks.

Sanwo-Olu not prepared for governance... Lagos PDP spokesperson, Taofik Gani says

The spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State, Mr Taofik Gani, in this interview with Tunde Ajala, shares the position of his party on governance in the state and the condition of roads across the city.

What is the assessment of your party on the state of roads in Lagos State?

The truth of the matter is that Lagos residents must take their destiny into their hands because transiting from this point to the other point lies in their hands. For the sake of clarity, the obvious thing is that we have a group of people governing this state and they are people who do not care. They are so indifferent; the power is so much and they are so arrogant with the power they have that they don’t even care. They will rather focus on the distribution of the state’s internally generated revenue among themselves.

There is no reason why Lagos State should be this backward in terms of infrastructure. As far back as 2013, Lagos was generating a minimum IGR of N55bn (monthly), based on our own research. With the state chairman of our party then, Capt. Tunji Shelle, we went out to do an undercover investigation into the Eko Atlantic and the things we found were shocking. Flood started reaching certain parts of Lagos and other areas because of the land reclamation they were doing. So, it was a serious misplacement of priorities in governance.

Talking about roads, do you know why we have them this bad?

Flooding is a major problem and the major cause of the flooding now is the encroachment on waterways. It’s like an encroachment on nature. Go to Ilubirin and you would see the import of the land reclamation. Now, with little rainfall, there would be flooding, but they don’t care. Unfortunately, we have a situation where there can never be a check because at the local government, state and national level, they all belong to the same party. I just pity Lagosians and that is why I said the only thing that can resolve this is that Lagosians must take up the responsibility themselves. They cannot rely on the state House of Assembly that is completely the subservient to the executive. Unfortunately, Governor Sanwo-Olu is even unprepared for this job and the double jeopardy is that we have a disillusioned House of Assembly that would rather ‘play the game’ than check the governor.
