The popular singer who just welcomed a son with Chioma, later reacted and vowed that the ladies in the viral video claiming one of them is pregnant for him will end up in prison.

Nigerians Not Coming Due To Border Closure, Our Businesses Suffering - Benin Republic Traders

Following the Government’s border closure to smuggling, Adekunle Sulaimon who visited adjoining Benin Republic communities along Seme border, reports the frustrations of the traders who had once benefited from the cycle of legal and illegal importation of contraband items into Nigeria.

It has been over two months since President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the closure of borders and also placed an embargo on the importation of rice, groundnut oil, frozen foods, drugs, and other commodities considered to be contraband. Among the aforementioned, rice is believed to be the most preferred staple food for Nigerians.

The major food markets where parboiled rice is sold are dominated by around 70 percent of foreign rice, leaving no place for locally produced variant which has no place in the market because of Nigerians low patronage to it.

On June 13, 2019, the Comptroller General of Nigerian Customs Services (NCS), Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd) represented at an event by the Assistant Comptroller General and Customs Coordinator in charge of Zone A, Mr. Kaycee Ekekezie as reported by several media organisations said that the NCS is making huge returns daily claiming it to be as a result of border closures which now enables for proper importation of goods/items into the country.

Nigerian Tribune visited some of the borders including Seme and other smuggling routes in Badagry, Yardi, Gbetromeh, Gbaji communities. Findings reveal that foreign parboiled rice produced in Thailand and India, vegetable oil and cars maintain the lead in the list of smuggled items into Nigeria.

The tale of Badagry-Seme routes
From Badagry roundabout to Gbaji Bridge, there are five checkpoints consisting of the Nigerian Police, Customs, Immigration officers. After the Gbaji Bridge, there is just one checkpoint manned by Mobiile police officers. In Yardi, there are two Customs checkpoints assisted by police officers. Sultan beach houses one custom checkpoint, meanwhile, at Kolington filling station, there is just one Customs checkpoint. At Akoro, there are two checkpoints, each manned by Immigration officers and Customs officers respectively. Gbetrome houses one. After Gbetrome are two checkpoints managed by the immigration officers. Asipa has two Customs checkpoints and immediately after Asipa checkpoints are three more checkpoints before getting to Seme border, totaling twenty checkpoints in all from Badagry to Seme.

The empty Pau market in Benin Republic
On getting to the conventional market popularly called Pau in Benin Republic, the state of the market showed that the closure of the border has caused a negative effect on commercial activities, resulting in poor sales and closure of several shops. In fact, one could barely tell that it is the popular rice market since the streets of the once busy crowded market were near empty.

Investigations also reveal that many of these items sold at far cheaper prices than in the Nigerian market, thereby boosting smuggling activities with attendant huge profits for the perpetrators. For instance, a 50kg bag of rice sold for between N9,200 and N10,000. After buying the said bags of rice, the smugglers usually paid at least N350 per bag to cross the border. But the bags of rice were sold in Nigeria between N18,000 and N20,000 even N22,000 per bag. For vegetable oil, a 20-litre ‘jerry can’ sells for N9,500, with additional N200 each paid to local truckers to cross the border.

Before the closure, I sold 100 bags per day; now I barely sell five bags
A trader at the rice market, Mr. Francis Abimbola, spoke with Nigerian Tribune on his ordeal since the beginning of the closure. According to him, “Before this time, I sold between 80 and 100 bags of rice in a day, although the Marigold parboiled rice is the most ordered, now I barely sell 5 bags before the day passes by. In fact, sometimes I don’t get anybody to patronise me, I close the shop earlier than expected.

“The little sales are even made by our own people here, who buy only in retail price to sell to their customers believed to be the final consumers.”

Mr. David Conde, another trader, recalled how Nigerians regularly flooded Seme market where they bought variety of items, which they transported back to Nigeria. He added that Nigerians were the heartbeat of Seme market, hence the hardship being faced by the ban placed on their patronage of the market.

An official of the Nigeria Customs Service inspecting a vehicle at the border
“In no time, I will be relocating to my village to look for alternative means of survival since the market is becoming unfavourable daily,” Conde said.

According to a frozen foods seller, Mr. Femi Abdurraji with “Dieu fait tout” (God does all things) Frozen Limited, “The sales of frozen foods weren’t this bad even when they were declared contrabands by the Nigeria government under Jonathan’s administration.

“Last week, about four shops that dealt in the sales of frozen foods were forcefully locked up by the owners who have gone to borrow loans to get their shops stocked up, only to be unable to pay up as and when due,” he said.

He further appealed that the government should reverse the decision on the border closure as the economy was growing down the drain daily. “People are really suffering here, our customers who manage to buy even small quantities to take to Nigeria are waylaid by the customs and deprived of the little bought for either consumption or sales.”

Doctor suspended as baby was born without a face

Portugal has suspended an obstetrician suspected of negligence after a baby was born without a face, in a case that has shocked the country.

The baby, Rodrigo, was born on October 7 without a nose, eyes or part of his skull but the deformities were only discovered during his delivery at a hospital in Setubal, about 40 kilometres (24 miles) south of Lisbon.

Portugal's Medical Council unanimously voted on Tuesday to suspend Dr Artur Carvalho from practising for six months.

The obstetrician has six other complaints against him, dating back to 2013.

The council opened an investigation after the parents of the deformed baby made a complaint and the birth made headlines.

"There is strong evidence" of the doctor's negligence, which "may lead to a disciplinary sanction," Alexandre Valentim Lourenco, medical council chief for the southern region told broadcaster RTP.

Given the impact of this case, which "has repercussions on the reputation of doctors" and "to reassure pregnant women", he said the suspension was necessary to evaluate the complaints.

Caravalho had followed the pregnancy of Rodrigo's mother in a private clinic in Setubal where he performed three mandatory ultrasounds but did not report any issues of concern.

The parents were alerted to a possible anomaly of the foetus after they requested a further ultrasound test in the sixth month of the pregnancy. but were reassured by the doctor.

"He explained that sometimes some parts of the face are not visible (on ultrasounds)... when the baby's face is glued to the belly of the mother," Joana Simao, the mother's sister, told broadcaster TVI 24.

The baby is still at the paediatric wing of the hospital where he was born

Police rescue 15 from Adamawa ‘rehab home’

The police in Adamawa State have arrested a man and his three sons for allegedly operating an illegal rehabilitation home where 13 adults and two teenagers were found bound in chains.

The policemen who rescued the 15 said they acted on intelligence report.  Police found the victims in a one-room apartment which is said not to be suitable for three persons considering the harsh weather condition of the state.

DSP Suleiman Nguroje, who disclosed this in Yola on Wednesday, said the 15 victims were found in dehumanising conditions.

He also said that some of the victims had spent the past year in that condition. It was revealed that except for two teens all the other victims were adults within the age bracket of 22 and 46 years.

Nguroje said, “They were being chained, humiliated, victimised, subjected to unnecessary torture. They were in chains for 24 hours without feeding and medication.”

Nguroje explained that the police has already started investigations into the activities of the four suspects.

The victims who have narrated their ordeals to the police following their rescue said they were fed only once in 24 hours.

One victim aged 42 said he had been in the centre for the last one year.

Counting Fayose’s N1.2bn took 10 days – Banker

A former head of Zenith Bank branch in Akure, Ondo State, Sunday Alade, told the Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday that it took 10 days to count the N1.2bn delivered to the bank in June 2014 by Abiodun Agbele, an ally of former Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State.

Alade was in court to testify against Fayose, who is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for an alleged fraud of N2.2bn.

Alade, who was fielding questions from the EFCC lawyer, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), narrated to Justice C.J. Aneke, how the N1.2bn was evacuated from two aircraft and taken in two trips in a bullion van to the bank for lodgment as instructed by Agbele.

He said, “When the aircraft arrived, three individuals disembarked from it, two of them walked away while the third person walked to Abiodun Agbele. After a short interaction, we were left to offload the cash from the aircraft.

“One Adewale O who introduced himself as the orderly to Senator Obanikoro led us to offload the cash. When we got to the branch, we bundle-counted the cash and it was about N744m.

“We were told there was a balance and we went back to the airport to pick the second batch from the aircraft into our bullion van. The second tranche was about N494m, making a total of N1.2bn. The money was detail-counted by the Cash and Teller Unit for 10 days before it was credited into three different accounts.”

A senior official of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Aliu Mohammed, who also testified against Fayose, told the court how N2.2bn was transferred from the operational account of former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, to the Diamond bank’s account of a firm, Sylva Mcmanara.

Justice Aneke adjourned till Friday for further proceedings.

Woman bags contract to fry “akara” for NAFEST tourists

Mr Olusegun Runsewe, Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), on Tuesday, rewarded Mrs Florence Robinson’s hard work, as she bagged contract to fry “akara” for NAFEST tourists.

Runsewe declared the reward during the National Festival of Arts and Culture Roundtable on Entrepreneurship, held at the Oba Akenzua Cultural Centre, Benin City, Edo state.

He said that Robinson deserved to be recognised and compensated for her high sense of responsibility, hard work and remarkable achievements, having worked as a bean cake seller for years.

According to him, the recognition given to Robinson should encourage Nigerians to be hardworking and responsible, even when efforts were being made by the Federal Government to boost the economy.

“I’m overwhelmed when this woman narrated her experience in life; she has single-handedly trained two of her children in the university as a bean cake seller.

Customs busts Adamawa syndicate rebagging foreign rice as local

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has identified and arrested members of a syndicate that took up the activity of importing foreign rice and rebagging it as local rice.

The Adamawa/Taraba Command of the NCS which achieved the feat, also seized 150 bags of foreign rice concealed under 300 bags of beans in a truck conveying the consignment.

The Zonal Controller of the Command, Karmadeen Olumoh, who addressed newsmen on the developments on Tuesday, said the rice rebagging syndicate comprises 15 members who specialize in emptying bags of foreign rice into Nigeria-branded bags and passing them off as local rice.

The Customs controller said the practice, indulged mainly to beat efforts to control sale of foreign rice in Adamawa markets, contravenes Federal Government’s rice import ban and actually frustrates moves by the Customs Service to mop up foreign rice from the markets.

Karmadeen Olumoh who conducted  newsmen to the rice rebagging warehouse in Yola, told the newsmen, “In our continuous efforts towards sustaining the fight against smuggling, officers and men of the Adamawa/Taraba Command, in conjunction with Federal Operation Unit and Taskforce, stumbled on this warehouse.

“What we have here is foreign parboiled rice smuggled into the country. What they are doing here is to repackage. They open the bags of foreign rice and empty them into local-branded bags.

“We have here about 900 bags of rice, each 50 kg. The duty paid value is M14.5 million.

We have arrested 15 suspects, including the manager, the warehouse owner and 12 labourers.”

Update On UNILAG Student Who "Turned Into A Mermaid"

Students of the University of Lagos were left in a state of shock last night after it was alleged that a student turned to a mermaid in Fagunwa hall.

According to multiple sources, the girl identified as Olumide, was rumoured to have turned to a mermaid after a fight with her friend.

The young girl later confessed that she is possessed with marine spirit.

Many students of UNILAG came out with cameras and declared her a mermaid and treated her like an outcast, while some did the wise thing by inviting security.

An anonymous source who also claimed the young girl is a mermaid said water was poured on her head and her hair turned green.

The able bodied alpha base security stormed the said hostel and took her away.

Nigeria’s Politics Is A Club For Old Men - US Diplomat

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, a United States diplomat, has likened Nigeria’s political circle to an old men’s club. The female diplomat, who was the assistant secretary of State for African Affairs between 2013 and 2017, made this known on Tuesday while speaking at ’20 Years of Democracy: a Retrospect’, a programme organised by National Endowment for Democracy (NED) in partnership with Ford Foundation and YIAGA Africa.

She predicted that the 2023 election will be challenging because of a gentleman’s agreement.

“Nigeria’s politics is an old men’s club. There is also a gentleman’s agreement to rotate power between the north and the south,” she said.
“The next election will be a challenging one because of a gentleman’s agreement to rotate power”.

Speaking on the challenges of Nigeria’s democracy in the past 20 years, the diplomat said Nigerian elections have a huge potential for violence.

“Nigeria made a huge step backwards to violence in 2019,” she said.

“I read that 30 people lost their lives to electoral violence but I think it would be higher than that.”

According to Thomas-Greenfield, elections are expensive in Nigeria because there is no framework for candidates to receive donations from electorates.

Although Nigeria was given credit for having the financial ability and institutional infrastructure to hold elections, Thomas-Greenfield said the government occasionally “uses its ability to pay to influence how the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) performs”.

Newlyweds left with horrific injuries after standing up to boy who returned with gang

A woman says she thought her new husband was dead after seeing him lying on the floor when they were attacked by a gang of around 12 people.

Teresa Mciver jumped in to help when her Neil was set upon by the gang. She ended up with horrific head injuries, broken ribs and a punctured lung while he suffered a gaping head wound following the attack with bats, machetes and an axe.

Dementia care worker Teresa, 50, still has flashbacks following the attack in Grimsby.

She said: ‘At one point Neil was hit over the head and knocked to the floor and I thought he was dead. It was just carnage.

‘I think one of the neighbours must have called the emergency services and we were both rushed to hospital. It is believed the couple were set upon by a gang after they had been confronted by a youth earlier in the evening who had then driven off.

Neil needed 32 stitches to his head and plastic surgery on his hand after the attack on May 14. Teresa was discharged but later rushed back to hospital after it was discovered that her lung had collapsed.

Teresa said: ‘My son and daughter were devastated. My mother also collapsed on the shoulder of my daughter and sobbed when she found out. ‘My mum is 75 and has beat breast cancer and she completely broke down over what happened.

‘It’s not been easy at all, I have nightmares and I wake up fighting and throwing punches.

‘We are both struggling to sleep and are watching the cameras all night waiting to see if someone knocks on the door. I don’t know where we would be if we didn’t have each other.

‘Neil has been left feeling so guilty as he said that he should have protected me, but I wasn’t going to step back and watch.

‘The whole thing has been horrific these past few months, we can’t wait to have some answers.’

He said: ‘My mum and her partner were round at a friend’s house on the Grange when they were confronted by this lad who started having a go at them. He quickly drove away after they stood up to him and they thought nothing more of it.

‘Then as they were leaving the house, they were jumped from behind by this group with bats, machetes and even an axe.’ Humberside Police have arrested three people in connection with the incident.

A 27-year-old man is due to appear in crown court on Monday October 28 charged with a public order offence. The other two people arrested have been released while police carry out further investigations.
