President Muhammadu Buhari has cautioned officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force against harassing young people in their bid to arrest ‘Yahoo criminals.’
Buhari handed down this warning in his keynote address at the opening ceremony of the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers on Monday in Lagos.
The theme of the retreat is, ‘Repositioning the Force for the Challenges of Effective Policing in the 21st Century.’
Represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Buhari said the service the Police Force rendered was one Nigerians could not do without, as it was the closest to the grassroots.
According to him, there are police stations everywhere and the police above every other service represent law and order to the average Nigerian.
“Which is why the police cannot escape public scrutiny and sometimes criticism; Nigerian people old and young want our Police force to be better and to do better; they want to be even prouder of your service than ever before.
“This is why in some of our urban areas we want to see more compliance with the rule of law and in dealing with Nigerians.
“Recently many civil society groups have complained about the arrest of young men and women just because they look successful and are carrying laptops.
“Yes we must apprehend yahoo criminals but we cannot harass young men and women on the streets and in taxis most of whom are merely going about their legitimate businesses.
“There are also cases of extra judicial killings and injuries; misuse of weapons and excessive use of force by some members of the force.
“ This sort of conduct by a few bad police officers must stop; and it is the duty of you senior and strategic leaders of the Police force to ensure that impunity of any kind is discouraged and punished where it is found.’’
Buhari said that the Nigeria Police force was one of the proudest National assets as it was the largest police force in Africa.
He said that the force had some of the best trained and best educated men and women.
The president said that Nigerian policemen had served everywhere locally and internationally with outstanding results.
“The Nigeria police force led police peace keeping activities in Congo, Namibia,Angola,Western Sahara,Somalia , Liberia, Sierra Leone, Bosnia Herzegovina , Croatia, Afghanistan, Kosovo, East Timor.
“Locally in the past one year alone the Nigeria police has between January and this month arrested over ;2,348 Armed Robbery suspects – 1,412 Suspected kidnappers 694 Murder Suspects, 1,513 Cultists safely rescued 826 Kidnap victims, recovered-1,660 firearms and 1612 vehicles.
“In the course of duty so many have paid the supreme price; while fighting off robbers, kidnappers and other criminals many have been maimed for life.’’

A Lebanese Hamza Koudeih and two other suspected accomplices of social media celebrity, Ismaila Mustapha (a.k.a. Mompha), have been arrested in Lagos.
Koudeih was arrested at the weekend after a three-hour stand-off at his N1.8 billion luxury apartment in the 33-storey Eko Atlantic Pearl Tower, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Mompha, Koudeih and the others are suspected to be kingpins of a network of cyber criminals who laundered N33 billion through three firms.
His arrest by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, followed intelligence unearthed after Mompha’s arrest last Tuesday.
The Nation learnt that when the anti-graft agency’s operatives arrived at his luxury suite, Koudeih and his wife refused to open the door.
The couple also did not respond to appeals from the building’s chief security officer.
But the operatives, who had been monitoring the premises and had it surrounded, knew the Lebanese was inside. His cars were parked in the garage downstairs.
The apartment was fortified with triple reinforced fire-proof door and closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras and they could not gain entrance.
It was gathered that the EFCC investigators battled for three hours to break down the door using breaching tools.
When they gained access, they met his wife who claimed Koudeih had escaped through the window.
But Koudeih’s apartment is on one of the topmost floors of Eko Atlantic Pearl Tower, said to be the tallest apartment building in Nigeria.
“Our officials knew that he was still inside and they were even hoping to persuade him not to jump out through the window because it would be suicide,” EFCC Lagos Zonal Head, Mr. Mohammed Rabo, who confirmed the arrest, told The Nation.
But they did not find Koudeih in any of the rooms until they observed that a part of the ceiling in his bedroom had been artificially sealed.
They pushed it open and found Koudeih hiding in the ceiling. Further search of his bedroom revealed a fire-proof safe containing different charms and talismans in calabashes.
According to the EFCC, the Lebanese admitted they were his “prayer objects”. Two luxury cars were also recovered from him.
Rabo said the commission was investigating Koudeih and his wife’s immigration status and the result was being expected.
He said it had been confirmed that they had Lebanese ancestry but it was not known if they had any other nationality.
The nationality of the two other suspects, he explained, was not yet known.
Rabo stated that local and international law enforcement agencies had indicated interest to collaborate in the investigation.
He said the operation that led to Koudeih’s arrest was “an offshoot of the collaboration between the EFCC and the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI),” but that Koudeih was arrested based on “purely EFCC intelligence”.
Rabo added: “Actionable intelligence received from local and international law enforcement agencies had revealed that Koudeih and Mompha alongside their collaborators are high valued targets in Organised Cyber Syndicate Network (OCSN).
“Investigations have also revealed that Mompha uses a firm known as Ismalob Global Investments Limited to perpetrate about N14 billion money laundering while Koudeih also operate two firms namely: THK Services Limited and CHK properties Limited to launder about N19 billion.”
It was also learnt that the EFCC discovered 51 Nigerian bank accounts opened by Mompha for money laundering.
The commission also revealed that the five wristwatches recovered from Mompha at his arrest on Tuesday are worth over N60 million, rather than the N20 million earlier thought.
According to the EFCC, Mompha, “a premium and first-class customer of one of the popular international airlines, was arrested on Friday 18, October 2019 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on his way to Dubai Emirate following [a] series of intelligence reports received by the Commission.”

A woman is told her ex-boyfriend has died and grieves the loss, only to come across him a few years later, very much alive and working in a local restaurant.
What?!
This utterly unbelievable scenario is one that an Australian woman known only as Rachel is said to have found herself in.
The young woman recently opened up to ABC.net.au about the bizarre situation she experienced with her former flame.
Rachel was just 18-years-old when she started dating a chef from her local pub.
The relationship seemed like any other teenage romance and she described him as being "really nice".
However things took a bit of a turn when her boyfriend, who cannot be named for legal reasons, lost his job and asked to borrow hundreds of pounds from her to live on.
He paid some of the money back, but when they broke up a few months later, she claims he refused to pay the rest and stopped replying to her messages.
Things got stranger when his friends informed her that furniture had started going missing from his houseshare.
"Furniture was gone, bed was gone, everything was gone," explains Rachel. "The initial story was he'd gone to rehab in Queensland."
She wasn't completely convinced by this, but before she had time to investigate, her ex's mum messaged her to say her son had died.
"It sounds stupid in retrospect, but you don't have any reason to question it. If I called you and told you my mum had died, you wouldn't be like, 'give me a death certificate'."
Rachel grieved the loss "in her own way" and eventually moved on.
Then two years later, the whole story unravelled.
While back in her home town with a friend, she stopped by a restaurant where she was stunned to discover her ex-boyfriend, very much alive and working there.
"I just went into shock," she recalls.
But before she could confront him about it all, Rachel was asked to leave the restaurant.
Unsure of the best course of action, she decided to talk to the police.
However they weren't able to help as they said it was "her word against his".
Later that same night, her ex's mother got in contact once again, this time to complain that Rachel had caused a scene at the restaurant and gotten her son fired.
The whole saga left the poor woman reeling and to this day there's still so much she doesn't understand about it all.
Her biggest wish is that she could have had a chance to sit down with him properly and talk it through.
"I would have had questions," she adds. "One or two."
The All Progressives Congress raised an alarm Monday about the plot by the Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar to mount an external campaign of calumny against justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
APC made the allegation ahead of the hearing of Atiku and PDP’s appeal against the verdict of the Presidential Election Tribunal that dismissed their petitions as unmeritorious.
“The All Progressives Congress (APC) alerts Nigerians on a new and sinister plot by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Alh. Atiku Abubakar to malign Supreme Court Justices using foreign media organisations”, the party’s publicity secretary, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu said on Monday. Read their statement:
Among the columnists that have been contracted to make spurious and false publications include Bruce Fein, an American lawyer who served in the Ronald Reagan administration and writes articles in several notable foreign newspapers. Bruce Fein has been paid to publish an “op-ed” on Nigerian Judiciary and the Supreme Court.
Since 2015, Bruce Fein has written several articles, all critical of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration. In 2019, his firm, Fein & DelValle entered into an agreement with the PDP and its presidential candidate, Alh. Atiku Abubakar to lobby the government of the United States not to recognise the winner of the 2019 presidential election, President Muhammadu Buhari, until the election petition is determined by the Supreme Court.
That plan failed woefully.
The fresh plot by the opposition PDP after being comprehensively rejected by Nigerians at the 2019 Presidential election is to cause confusion, anarchy with a view to making this country ungovernable.
It is to be noted that PDP has made up its mind to pursue a destructive agenda against Nigeria for the next four years. This is no longer opposition politics. It is an unpatriotic agenda by people who do not mean well for their country. It is important we continue to alert Nigerian to the devious plan of the PDP.
The Judiciary is an important institution and its integrity cannot be subjected to political machinations. It is the responsibility of every truly patriotic Nigerian to rise against the PDP to ensure they do not succeed in undermining our corporate existence.
The judgement of the 2019 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal dismissed in its entirety the petition filed by the PDP and its presidential candidate, Alh. Atiku Abubakar. We are confident that the Supreme Court will further and finally affirm President Muhammadu Buhari’s election victory.
We are also confident that the Judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court will not succumb to the opposition PDP’s subterfuge.
We must continue to resist the unrelenting efforts being made by the PDP and their minions such as the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), few social media worms spreading and promoting false and destructive news in their attempt to truncate our movement towards greatness. As part of the PDP and Atiku’s post-election delusions and scheming, the so called Coalition of United Political Parties has the devious mandate to intimidate and blackmail important state institutions such as INEC, the judiciary, and security agencies, on behalf of PDP.
APC’s victory at the presidential polls and the election tribunal represents our collective desire as a people to remain focused on the progressive growth and development of our country’s economy, fight against corruption, and providing security.

Over 120 traders, operating at the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA), Phase 2, Plaza, Computer Village, Ikeja, have accused wife of the Inspector-General of Police, Mrs. Fatima Adamu, of attempting to take over their shops and destroy their source of livelihood.
According to them, Adamu has concluded plans to demolish the shops, construct new ones and then lease the shops again. She is the national president of POWA as the wife of the IGP.
A source close to the IG’s wife, however, told New Telegraph that the woman in question was not aware of the shenanigans going on in the market. It was learnt that a senior police officer’s wife has been using the name of the IG’s wife to carry out illegal eviction of the traders.
The woman is alleged to be colluding with a land developer to achieve this aim.
The traders, who came out on Friday armed with placards, said that the demolition would bring untold hardship on them and their family members.
They urged the IG, Mohammed Adamu, to look into their plight and plead with his wife on their behalf.
The traders argued that nobody bothered to carry them along in the planning of the alleged planned demolition.
The Chairman of POWA Plaza 2, Mr. Ebechukwu Enekwe, said that they were uneasy with the planned demolition, stressing that nobody was sure of ever getting his or her shop back.
He said: “A lot of us will suffer if this plaza is demolished. This is where majority of us make our living from. Many of us are still servicing bank loans which we took to pump into our business. If we’re displaced, we don’t know what would become of our wives, family members and children. Some of us have dependants.”
The former Vice President of the plaza, Mr. Mark Eze, disclosed that some of the traders had paid advance rent.
He added: “We’re appealing to the Nigeria Police Force and Lagos State government to come to our aid. They should help us to stop this demolition plan. Our lives and the future of our children are being threatened.”
The Secretary of the plaza, Mrs. Benedict Osas, said: “A lot of widows are feeding their families through this plaza. Lives would become unbearable for them if this demolition is carried out. There are over 100 shops with over 2,000 employees in the plaza. If this plaza is demolished, the effect on us will be disastrous.”
The Lagos State Chairperson of POWA, Mrs. Sarah Ajani, said they had been resisted by the traders, insisting POWA also had a series of meetings with them, regarding the upgrading of the plaza.
Ajani explained that the disagreement started when the occupants of POWA Phase 2, were given a letter of eviction in July to vacate the premises for reconstruction in September which was later shifted to December following pleas.
She said: “The eviction notice was given to them following the directive of the Ministry of Environment to us to upgrade it or face demolition by the state. The National President of POWA, Mrs. Fatima Adamu, had earlier signed a letter indicating that traders with genuine allocation documents from POWA in the old structure shall be reapportioned shops by POWA from the shops accrued to it when the new structure is fully completed.
“The same number of shops demolished shall be reapportioned to the original tenants upon completion of the new structure. We are doing this in a bid to meet up with the standard of Lagos State Ministry of Environment. The purpose is to create an ultramodern plaza with better facilities and create more shops that would accommodate more officers.”
Liaison Officer of POWA, who gave her name simply as Inspector Esther, said that the demolition became necessary after receiving complaints that the structure had weakened, necessitating it being reconstructed.
She added: “Even those who have paid in advance will reach an agreement with their landladies and continue doing business till the time their supposed rent will expire or be renewed.”
A woman who texted her dead dad’s number daily for four years claims to have received an emotional reply from a grieving stranger who had lost his own daughter in a car crash.
Chastity Patterson, 23, of Arkansas, USA, had been sending her dad's phone number daily life updates after his death four years ago so that she could feel connected to him in her grief.
Then, to her surprise, on the fourth anniversary of his death someone replied.
A man identifying himself as 'Brad' said he had been reading her messages for years as he sent her an emotional text revealing he was a father himself, and that he had lost his own daughter in a car crash.
Chastity's Facebook post sharing the heartfelt messages from the grieving dad went viral, and she said she has been inundated with messages of support.
She wrote as she shared the screenshots of the text messages: "I text my dad everyday to let him know how my day goes, for the past Four years! Today was my sign that everything is okay and I can let him rest!"
She has since explained in another update that Jason is not her biological father, but he parented her.
She sent the lengthy message to his old number on Thursday, the night before the fourth anniversary of 'Jason's' death.
Chastity wrote: "Tomorrow is going to be a tough day again!
"It's been 4 years since I lost you and not a day goes by that I don't miss you."
Chastity writes a life update covering huge milestones, like beating cancer, graduating, having her heart broken, then finding new love
Chastity writes that she is "afraid of marriage" and wishes he was there if she ever does have the big day.
She writes: "I'll have to walk that long aisle alone and you won't be there to tell me everything will be okay, I'm doing great, you would be so proud of the woman I have become...."
She finishes the text to her dad with an upbeat assurance she still has a "smart mouth" and her "attitude has not changed".
Chastity writes: "I just wanted to say I love you and I really do miss you!"
She then received a reply from a man who introduces himself as 'Brad' and tells her he is a father too.
In the screenshots of his message shared by Chastity, he reveals he has been reading her messages to her late dad for years, and opens up about his own grief.
He writes to Chastity: "I lost my daughter in a car wreck in August 2014 and your messages have kept me alive."
He had never replies to Chastity's messages in the past, but wrote that he felt it was time to let her know he was there.
"I'm sorry you lost someone so close to you but I have listened to you over the years and I have watched you grow and go through more than anyone.
"I have wanted to text you back for years but I didn't want to break your heart. You are an extraordinary woman and I wish my daughter would have become the woman you are."
He writes that Chastity's father would have been proud of her and finishes the message saying he believed their correspondence was a "sign from God."
After receiving a heartfelt response from hundreds of thousands of people who liked and shared her post on Facebook, Chastity went on to explain who Jason was to her.
