First Governor Of Lagos, Mobolaji Johnson Is Dead

The first military governor of Lagos State, Brig-Gen. Mobolaji Olufunso Johnson, is dead. His son, Deji, confirmed that the retired soldier who was aged 83, passed on in the late hours of Wednesday, 30th Oct 2019.

Johnson was first appointed by Aguiyi-Ironsi as the administrator of the former federal territory of Lagos in 1966.

In May 1967, Lagos State was created and Johnson became the first governor of Lagos.

The state was now composed of the old Federal Territory of Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Lagos Island plus the additions of Epe, Badagry, Ikorodu and Ikeja divisions.

What was the feeling when you became the governor of Lagos State at such a young age of 31?
The appointment came suddenly upon me as a young man and I had to take it. I took it as a challenge and faced it squarely. The challenges were not difficult to face and overcome because of the upbringing I had under my father, Pa ‘Motola Johnson, who was a strong character and raised all of us his children to be equally strong in character. While I was governor, my father was always reminding me not to tarnish the name and image of the family. That kept me focused and steady throughout my tenure. No wonder after the investigations of the Murtala Muhammed government that came after the government of General Yakubu Gowon, in which I served as governor, I was one of the governors given a clean bill of health as free from corrupt practices. I must say that a major problem in our political life today is that we have many in positions of authority who never had good home training. I am eternally grateful to God for the good upbringing under my father, which shaped my life for good.

What were the challenges you met on ground as the pioneer governor of the state?
Lagos State came into existence as a child of circumstance. The country was on the verge of civil war and one of the masterstrokes General Gowon applied was the creation of states, which pulled the carpet off the feet of [Chukwuemeka Odumegwu] Ojukwu. I came in first as the administrator of the Federal Capital before states were created. The feeling of Nigerians was that Lagos was a no man’s land. I had to face the challenge of correcting that erroneous impression. There was the need to let people know that the territory called Lagos belonged to a people with their distinct historical background, culture and tradition. Again, quite a good number of people thought the creation of Lagos was a ruse, that it could not be; that it could not work. So, we had to make sure it worked. We had to work round the clock to ensure that Lagos became a reality and I am happy to say that 50 years down the road, Lagos State is a reality, a model state waxing stronger.

Singer Ciara has paid the ultimate tribute to Beyonce and Jay Z with her Halloween costume. Ciara and her husband Russell Wilson transformed themselves into music's biggest power couple.

They imitated the iconic video for Beyonce and Jay Z's track Apes**t.

In the video, Beyonce and Jay Z both wear silk trouser suits with a ton of bling and stand in front of the Mona Lisa - they even rented out the Louvre to pull this off.

Ciara, 34, and American football player Russell, 30, replicated the outfits perfectly, right down to the hairstyles.

But instead of the Mona Lisa, Ciara and Russell pose in front of a framed picture of former US president and first lady, Barack and Michelle Obama.

The convicts, Jamal Ajao, Joel Olawale and Tobi Kehinde, were re-arraigned after approaching the commission for plea bargain.

Ajao and Olawale were jointly brought before the court on an amended charge of fraudulent impersonation contrary to Section 27(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention etc.) Act, 2015, and punishable under Section 22(4) of the same Act.

The presiding judge sentenced him to one year in prison on Wednesday.

Apart from their jail terms, the court also ordered Ajao and Joel to pay their victim, through the Federal Government, the sum of $800 in restitution.

Kenya Moore breaks silence on split from husband

Kenya Moore is setting the record straight about her surprising split from husband Marc Daly.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta star, who shares 1-year-old daughter Brooklyn Doris with Daly, opens up for the first time about the breakup exclusively in this week’s issue of PEOPLE — saying that the two haven’t filed for divorce yet and she’s hopeful they can find a way back together, but only if she and her estranged spouse can work through their issues.

“I didn’t get married to quit,” Moore says. “I love my husband. I don’t doubt that he loves me. Let me be clear, I took my vows seriously. I believe in for better and for worse and I believe in trying it all before you walk away, especially when we do have a child and we are a family.”

Unfortunately, she “doesn’t get the sense that [Daly] feels the same way.”

“I am hopeful, and have always wanted to work on our relationship. But I just don’t know if that’s even a possibility at this point, honestly,” Moore admits. “Marc doesn’t seem to be there. I’d feel more comfortable calling it quits if I knew I’d tried everything and it still didn’t work. And we definitely didn’t do everything we could have done to save our relationship.”

Back in September, Moore, 48, and Daly, 49, shocked fans when they announced in back-to-back statements exclusively to PEOPLE that they were going their separate ways after two years of marriage.

“Stop issuing drivers’ licence to drug addicts” – NURTW tells FRSC

National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has advised the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to stop issuing driver’s licence to drug addicts and motorists who consumed alcohol and other hard substances.

Alhaji Ahmadu Haruna, Chairman of the Union in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau, gave the advice on Wednesday at the launch of the 2019 Ember Months Campaign organised by the Bukuru Unit Command of FRSC in Barkin Ladi

According to Haruna, proper checks on the personality and lifestyle of drivers before issuing them with a driver’s license will go a long way in ensuring sanity on the highways.

He advised the corps to subject anybody coming to obtain a drivers license to thorough medical checks to ascertain their level of fitness to ply the highways with vehicles

“We want to call on FRSC to stop issuing driver’s license to drivers who consume alcohol and other hard drugs.

“These are the category of persons who don’t respect traffic rules and regulations; indulge in speeding, overloading and other forms of recklessness on the roads.

“We in NURTW don’t have the powers to arrest them or even stop them from driving, particularly that they have been licensed by the authority concerned.

“So, we are calling on FRSC to conduct proper checks before issuing a license to drivers,” he advised.

Kaduna schoolgirls parents speak, reveals Ex-Governor's role, give shocking details

Three days after their release, parents of the kidnapped Kaduna schoolgirls have disclosed that they paid ransom to the abductors before their children were released.

Even as they refused to disclose the amount paid to the kidnappers, the parents who addressed a press conference to appreciate Nigerians and those who played roles in their children’s safe release said, they paid the ransom on instalments.

The six female students and two staff of the Engravers College, Kakau Daji in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State were kidnapped by armed kidnappers within the school premises in the first week of October.

The parents while speaking on Tuesday said, their children were set free by their abductors after meeting the ransom demanded by them.

Spokesman of the parents, Engr. Ohemu Fredrick disclosed that, a former Governor of the state who neither knew them or ever met them raised money alongside his friends, for them to pay the kidnappers.

He also said the former Governor also rendered the children and the two staff free medical treatment aside from providing the victims ambulance that conveyed them.

Corroborating the story, one of the parents told newsmen shortly after briefing that the police merely gave their children and the two staff ride after the kidnappers had set them free.

He explained that after the kidnappers had set them (the children and the two staff) the police merely picked up the children and dropped them near the Kaduna tollgate, about 5kilometre away from the city centre.

“We thanked them (police) for giving the children and the two staff a ride.

“What happened was that when the children and the two staff were released, they had no shoes or footwear’s on them. So, out of the ransom paid, the kidnappers gave the victims transport money to come back to the town. It was out of that money that the principal crossed over to the other side of the road to buy footwears(slippers) for the victims. It was at that point that police arrived and offered to give the victims lift.

“Even the first time we paid part of the ransom, the kidnappers also gave the ransom bearer transport fare back to town. So, we really appreciate the police for giving our children and the staff lift.”

The parents, however, recounted that the girls and their teachers were really tortured by the kidnappers. “The children and the two staff really suffered while in the hands of their abductors. They tortured them each time they called us so that we could hear them.

They, however, expressed appreciation to all Nigerians, the former Governor and all who played roles to get their daughters released.

"We were only there a few minutes, then we got up to go.

"Hannah turned around and lost her footing on the rocks. I reached around to grab her bag but I couldn't grab it in time and she fell.

Buhari’s photographer, Bayo Omoboriowo renovates Ekiti school

The Chief Official Photographer to the President, Bayo Omoboriowo, in appreciation of God’s blessings, has started giving back to the society.

His state governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, has inaugurated some blocks of classrooms renovated and equipped by Omoboriowo at Ijero High School in Ekiti State.

The ceremony was attended by first class traditional rulers, community and political leaders in the state.

Speaking with newsmen on the occasion, Omoboriowo said he was compelled to give back to the society, especially students, because God had favoured him by giving him the privilege to work with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Apart from the massive renovation he carried out through his Bayo Omoboriowo Foundation in Ijero High School, he empowered students in his hometown with 1000 fully loaded school bags and writing materials.

“Bayo Omoboriowo Foundation was birthed as a response to one man’s unwavering desire to continually seek improvements in the general well-being of not just himself, but his immediate environment and society at large,” he said.

Fayemi, who is also the chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), called on all indigenes of the state to emulate the philanthropic gestures of Omoboriowo.

He also urged those who are well to do in the state to join hands with his administration to develop Ekiti, adding that the task of development could not be left to the government alone.

Fayemi said: “This state belongs to all of us. You know what they say about a village bringing up a child and taking a community to build a state.

“So, what Bayo (Omoboriowo) has done is exemplary and I think that other public-spirited Ekiti sons and daughters, Ekiti residents, Ekiti lovers should also consider and do within their own various areas of jurisdiction.

“Bayo is not a school teacher, but he was brought up by teachers and that is why he felt he needed to give back and went to Kabiyesi to discuss the possibility of giving back to schools in the society.

“Look at what he has done. I encourage all Ekiti indigenes, wherever they may be based, you don’t even have to have gone to school in Ekiti; those who have even gone to school in Ekiti are even more compelled to do so.

“I see a lot of alumni associations doing that; they are all contributing their quota. But individuals can also adopt a school.”

Obaseki, Oshiomhole continue their 'war' in Edo state

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has said that his predecessor and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole has lost political grip on the state, but now resorts to deploying police operatives from Abuja to harass his aides.

The Governor, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, added that Oshiomhole’s intent was an “attempt to plunge the state into chaos and cause panic in [his] camp.”

He stated this in response to the arrest of his security adviser, Andrew Momodu, over the weekend by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) with the intent of whisking him to Abuja.

Osagie’s statement had alleged that Mr. Momodu was arrested in a gestapo style.

According to him, “When Momodu resisted the unlawful arrest by the security agents, he was taken to the Police Headquarters in Benin, where he was held for an extended period until the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu intervened.”

“Investigations revealed that the security from Abuja have orders from above to pick up not less than 50 persons loyal to Obaseki, in an attempt to plunge the state into chaos and cause panic in the governor’s camp.

“Those penciled down for arrest, according to sources privy to the policemen’s modus operandi, including Special Adviser (SA) to the Governor on Political Matters, Edo South, Hon. Osaigbovo Iyoha.

“Others on the list are Albert Obazee, Kelly Okungbowa (popularly known as Ebo Stone) and Muktar-Osagie Muntari, who heads the state’s Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV).”

Obaseki and Oshiomhole have been at loggerheads over who controls the structure of the party in the state.
